Responses to Saul’s Death
1 After the death of Saul,(A) David returned from defeating the Amalekites(B) and stayed at Ziklag two days. 2 On the third day a man with torn clothes and dust on his head(C) came from Saul’s camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground and paid homage. 3 David asked him, “Where have you come from?”
He replied to him, “I’ve escaped from the Israelite camp.”
4 “What was the outcome? Tell me,” David asked him.
“The troops fled from the battle,” he answered. “Many of the troops have fallen and are dead. Also, Saul and his son Jonathan are dead.”(D)
5 David asked the young man who had brought him the report, “How do you know Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?”
6 “I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,”(E) he replied, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear. At that very moment the chariots and the cavalry were closing in on him. 7 When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, so I answered: I’m at your service. 8 He asked me, ‘Who are you?’ I told him: I’m an Amalekite.(F) 9 Then he begged me, ‘Stand over me and kill me, for I’m mortally wounded,[a] but my life still lingers.’(G) 10 So I stood over him and killed him because I knew that after he had fallen he couldn’t survive. I took the crown that was on his head and the armband that was on his arm, and I’ve brought them here to my lord.”
11 Then David took hold of his clothes and tore them,(H) and all the men with him did the same. 12 They mourned, wept, and fasted until the evening(I) for those who died by the sword—for Saul, his son Jonathan, the Lord’s people, and the house of Israel.
13 David inquired of the young man who had brought him the report, “Where are you from?”
“I’m the son of a resident alien,” he said. “I’m an Amalekite.”
14 David questioned him, “How is it that you were not afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” (J) 15 Then David summoned one of his servants and said, “Come here and kill him!” The servant struck him, and he died.(K) 16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood is on your own head(L) because your own mouth testified against you by saying, ‘I killed the Lord’s anointed.’”
17 David sang the following lament(M) for Saul and his son Jonathan, 18 and he ordered that the Judahites be taught The Song of the Bow. It is written in the Book of Jashar:[b](N)
19 The splendor of Israel lies slain on your heights.
How the mighty have fallen!
20 Do not tell it in Gath,
don’t announce it in the marketplaces of Ashkelon,
or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice,(O)
and the daughters of the uncircumcised will celebrate.
21 Mountains of Gilboa,
let no dew or rain be on you,
or fields of offerings,[c]
for there the shield of the mighty was defiled(P)—
the shield of Saul, no longer anointed with oil.(Q)
22 Jonathan’s bow never retreated,
Saul’s sword never returned unstained,[d]
from the blood of the slain,
from the flesh[e] of the mighty.
23 Saul and Jonathan,
loved and delightful,
they were not parted in life or in death.
They were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.
24 Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul,
who clothed you in scarlet, with luxurious things,
who decked your garments with gold ornaments.(R)
25 How the mighty have fallen in the thick of battle!
Jonathan lies slain on your heights.
26 I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother.
You were such a friend to me.
Your love for me was more wondrous
than the love of women.(S)
27 How the mighty have fallen
and the weapons of war have perished!

1 After the death of Saul, when David had returned (A)from striking down the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. 2 And on the third day, behold, (B)a man came from Saul's camp, (C)with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. And when he came to David, (D)he fell to the ground and paid homage. 3 David said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.” 4 And David said to him, (E)“How did it go? Tell me.” And he answered, “The people fled from the battle, and also many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and his son Jonathan are also dead.” 5 Then David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and his son Jonathan are dead?” 6 And the young man who told him said, (F)“By chance I happened to be on Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and behold, the chariots and the horsemen were close upon him. 7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ 8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ 9 And he said to me, (G)‘Stand beside me and kill me, for anguish has seized me, and yet my life still lingers.’ 10 So I stood beside him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. (H)And I took the crown that was on his head and the armlet that was on his arm, and I have brought them here to my lord.”
11 Then David took hold of his clothes and (I)tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12 And they mourned and wept (J)and fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son and for the people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword. 13 And David said to the young man who told him, “Where do you come from?” And he answered, “I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite.” 14 David said to him, “How is it you were not (K)afraid to put out your hand to destroy (L)the Lord's anointed?” 15 Then (M)David called one of the young men and said, “Go, execute him.” And he struck him down so that he died. 16 And David said to him, (N)“Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed (O)the Lord's anointed.’”
David's Lament for Saul and Jonathan
17 And David (P)lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18 and he said it[a] should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in (Q)the Book of Jashar.[b] He said:
19 “Your glory, O Israel, is slain on your high places!
(R)How the mighty have fallen!
20 (S)Tell it not in Gath,
(T)publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon,
(U)lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
lest the daughters of (V)the uncircumcised exult.
21 (W)“You mountains of Gilboa,
let there be no dew or rain upon you,
nor fields of offerings![c]
For there the shield of the mighty was defiled,
the shield of Saul, not (X)anointed with oil.
22 “From the blood of the slain,
from the fat of the mighty,
(Y)the bow of Jonathan turned not back,
and the sword of Saul returned not empty.
23 “Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely!
In life and in death they were not divided;
they were (Z)swifter than eagles;
they were (AA)stronger than lions.
24 “You daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
who clothed you luxuriously in scarlet,
(AB)who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

in the midst of the battle!
“Jonathan lies slain on your high places.
26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
very pleasant have you been to me;

surpassing the love of women.

3 And David said to him, “Where have you come from?”
So he said to him, “I have escaped from the camp of Israel.”
4 Then David said to him, (F)“How did the matter go? Please tell me.”
And he answered, “The people have fled from the battle, many of the people are fallen and dead, and Saul and (G)Jonathan his son are dead also.”
5 So David said to the young man who told him, “How do you know that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?”
6 Then the young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance to be on (H)Mount Gilboa, there was (I)Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. 7 Now when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ 8 And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ So I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ 9 He said to me again, ‘Please stand over me and kill me, for [b]anguish has come upon me, but my life still remains in me.’ 10 So I stood over him and (J)killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”
11 Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and (K)tore them, and so did all the men who were with him. 12 And they (L)mourned and wept and (M)fasted until evening for Saul and for Jonathan his son, for the (N)people of the Lord and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.
13 Then David said to the young man who told him, “Where are you from?”
And he answered, “I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.”
14 So David said to him, “How (O)was it you were not (P)afraid to (Q)put forth your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” 15 Then (R)David called one of the young men and said, “Go near, and execute him!” And he struck him so that he died. 16 So David said to him, (S)“Your blood is on your own head, for (T)your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.’ ”
The Song of the Bow
17 Then David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son, 18 (U)and he told them to teach the children of Judah the Song of the Bow; indeed it is written (V)in the Book [c]of Jasher:
19 “The beauty of Israel is slain on your high places!
(W)How the mighty have fallen!
20 (X)Tell it not in Gath,
Proclaim it not in the streets of (Y)Ashkelon—
Lest (Z)the daughters of the Philistines rejoice,
Lest the daughters of (AA)the uncircumcised triumph.
21 “O (AB)mountains of Gilboa,
(AC)Let there be no dew nor rain upon you,
Nor fields of offerings.
For the shield of the mighty is [d]cast away there!
The shield of Saul, not (AD)anointed with oil.
22 From the blood of the slain,
From the fat of the mighty,
(AE)The bow of Jonathan did not turn back,
And the sword of Saul did not return empty.
23 “Saul and Jonathan were beloved and pleasant in their lives,

24 “O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,
Who clothed you in scarlet, with luxury;

You have been very pleasant to me;

2 It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.
3 And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.
4 And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.
5 And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?

16 And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the Lord's anointed.
17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:

21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.
22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.
23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

Când a ajuns în faţa lui David, s-a aruncat cu faţa la pământ şi s-a închinat. 3 David i-a zis: „De unde vii?” Şi el i-a răspuns: „Am scăpat din tabăra lui Israel.” 4 David i-a zis: „Spune-mi ce s-a întâmplat?” Şi el a răspuns: „Poporul a fugit de pe câmpul de bătaie şi un mare număr de oameni au căzut şi au pierit; chiar şi Saul şi fiul său Ionatan au murit.” 5 David a zis tânărului care-i aducea aceste veşti: „De unde ştii că Saul şi fiul său Ionatan au murit?” 6 Şi tânărul care-i aducea aceste veşti a răspuns: „Am venit din întâmplare pe muntele Ghilboa(C) şi Saul(D) stătea rezemat în suliţa lui, şi carele şi călăreţii erau aproape să-l ajungă. 7 Întorcându-se, m-a văzut şi m-a chemat. Eu am zis: ‘Iată-mă!’ 8 Şi el mi-a zis: ‘Cine eşti?’ I-am răspuns: ‘Eu sunt amalecit’. 9 Şi a zis: ‘Apropie-te dar şi omoară-mă, căci m-a apucat ameţeala, măcar că sunt încă plin de viaţă’. 10 M-am apropiat de el şi l-am omorât(E), ştiind bine că n-avea să mai rămână cu viaţă în urma înfrângerii. Am luat cununa împărătească de pe capul lui şi brăţara pe care o avea la braţ şi le-am adus aici, domnului meu.” 11 David şi-a apucat hainele şi le-a sfâşiat(F) şi toţi oamenii care erau lângă el au făcut acelaşi lucru. 12 Au jelit, au plâns şi au postit până seara de durere pentru Saul, pentru fiul său Ionatan, pentru poporul Domnului, fiindcă fuseseră tăiaţi cu sabia. 13 David a zis tânărului care-i adusese aceste veşti: „De unde eşti?” Şi el a răspuns: „Sunt fiul unui străin, al unui amalecit.” 14 David i-a zis: „Cum(G) nu ţi-a fost frică(H) să pui mâna(I) pe unsul Domnului şi să-l omori?” 15 Şi David(J) a chemat pe unul din oamenii lui şi a zis: „Apropie-te şi omoară-l!” Omul acela a lovit pe amalecit, care a murit. 16 Şi David i-a zis: „Sângele(K) tău să cadă asupra capului tău, căci gura(L) ta a mărturisit împotriva ta, fiindcă ai zis: ‘Am omorât pe unsul Domnului!’ ”
Cântarea de jale a lui David pentru Saul şi Ionatan
17 Iată cântarea de jale pe care a alcătuit-o David pentru Saul şi fiul său Ionatan 18 şi pe care a poruncit s-o înveţe copiii lui Iuda. Este numită Cântarea Arcului şi se află scrisă în Cartea(M) Dreptului.
19 „Fala ta, Israele, zace ucisă pe dealurile tale!
Cum(N) au căzut vitejii!
20 Nu(O) spuneţi lucrul acesta în Gat, nu răspândiţi vestea aceasta în uliţele Ascalonului,
ca să nu se bucure fetele(P) filistenilor,
ca să nu se laude fetelor celor netăiaţi(Q) împrejur.
21 Munţi(R) din Ghilboa! Nici rouă(S), nici ploaie să nu cadă pe voi!
Să nu fie pe voi nici câmpii care să dea pârgă pentru darurile de mâncare!
Căci acolo au fost aruncate scuturile vitejilor,
scutul lui Saul, ca şi când n-ar fi fost uns(T) cu untdelemn.
22 De la sângele celor răniţi,
de la grăsimea celor mai voinici,
arcul(U) lui Ionatan nu da înapoi niciodată
şi sabia lui Saul nu se învârtea niciodată în vânt.
23 Saul şi Ionatan, care s-au plăcut şi s-au iubit în timpul vieţii lor,
n-au fost despărţiţi nici la moarte;
erau mai uşori decât vulturii,
mai tari(V) decât leii.
24 Fiicele lui Israel, plângeţi pe Saul, care vă îmbrăca în stacojiu şi alte podoabe,
care vă punea găteli de aur pe hainele voastre!
25 Cum au căzut vitejii în mijlocul luptei!
Cum a murit Ionatan pe dealurile tale!
26 Mă doare după tine, frate Ionatane!
Tu erai plăcerea mea;
dragostea ta pentru mine era minunată,
mai presus de dragostea(W) femeiască.
27 Cum(X) au căzut vitejii! Cum li s-au pierdut armele!”
