⁸ Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, ^(A)I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince^[a] over my people Israel.

⁷ Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ^(A)‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.

²¹ And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, ^(A)who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince^[a] over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord.

¹¹ Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, ^(A)“There remains yet the youngest,^[a] but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, ^(B)“Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” ¹² And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ^(C)ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, ^(D)“Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”

⁷ Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel,

Saul Anointed King

10 ^(A)Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head ^(B)and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince^[a] over ^(C)his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince^[b] over his heritage.

¹⁶ “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, ^(A)and you shall anoint him to be prince^[a] over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. ^(B)For I have seen^[b] my people, because their cry has come to me.”
