^14 (A)I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, ^(B)I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,

⁵ For to which of the angels did God ever say,

Or again,

^19 (A)Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

⁶ He said to me, ‘It is ^(A)Solomon your son who shall build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.

^13 (A)I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, ^(B)as I took it from him who was before you,

⁵ Know then in your heart that, ^(A)as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your God disciplines you.

³² But when we are judged by the Lord, ^(A)we are disciplined^[a] so that we may not be ^(B)condemned along with the world.

⁵ And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

⁷ It is for discipline that you have to endure. ^(D)God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? ⁸ If you are left without discipline, ^(E)in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. ⁹ Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to ^(F)the Father of spirits ^(G)and live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, ^(H)that we may share his holiness. ^11 (I)For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields ^(J)the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
