¹² “Go and say to David: Thus says the Lord: Three things I offer^[a] you; choose one of them, and I will do it to you.”^(A)

⁷ Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children, for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline?^{(B) 8} If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children.^{(C) 9} Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness.^(D)

¹⁹ I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.^(A)

¹⁰ “Go and say to David: Thus says the Lord: Three things I offer you; choose one of them, so that I may do it to you.”^{(A) 11} So Gad came to David and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: Take your choice:

¹⁴ Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord,^[a] the child born to you shall die.”^(A)

⁹ Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.^{(A) 10} Now, therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, for you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.^(B)

⁴³ For the land shall be deserted by them and enjoy^[a] its Sabbath years by lying desolate without them, while they shall make amends for their iniquity, because they dared to spurn my ordinances, and they abhorred my statutes.^(A)
