¹² Then David went and took the bones of Saul, and the bones of Jonathan his son, from the men of ^(A)Jabesh Gilead who had stolen them from the street of ^[a]Beth Shan, where the ^(B)Philistines had hung them up, after the Philistines had struck down Saul in Gilboa.

^10 (A)Then they put his armor in the temple of the ^(B)Ashtoreths, and ^(C)they fastened his body to the wall of ^(D)Beth^[a] Shan.

^11 (E)Now when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, ^12 (F)all the valiant men arose and traveled all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh and ^(G)burned them there. ¹³ Then they took their bones and ^(H)buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, ^(I)and fasted seven days.

¹¹ And in Issachar and in Asher, ^(A)Manasseh had ^(B)Beth Shean and its towns, Ibleam and its towns, the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of En Dor and its towns, the inhabitants of Taanach and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns—three hilly regions.

Tragic End of Saul and His Sons^(A)

10 Now ^(B)the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

⁵ So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, ^(A)“You are blessed of the Lord, for you have shown this kindness to your lord, to Saul, and have buried him. ⁶ And now may ^(B)the Lord show kindness and truth to you. I also will repay you this kindness, because you have done this thing. ⁷ Now therefore, let your hands be strengthened, and be valiant; for your master Saul is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

⁶ Then the young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance to be on ^(A)Mount Gilboa, there was ^(B)Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

The Tragic End of Saul and His Sons^(A)

31 Now ^(B)the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount ^(C)Gilboa.

⁴ Then the Philistines gathered together, and came and encamped at ^(A)Shunem. So Saul gathered all Israel together, and they encamped at ^(B)Gilboa.
