¹⁹ I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up ^(A)the inheritance of the Lord?”

¹⁹ Now therefore, please, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the Lord has ^(A)stirred you up against me, let Him accept an offering. But if it is the children of men, may they be cursed before the Lord, ^(B)for they have driven me out this day from sharing in the ^(C)inheritance of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’

³ Therefore David said to the Gibeonites, “What shall I do for you? And with what shall I make atonement, that you may bless ^(A)the inheritance of the Lord?”

^2 (A)for kings and ^(B)all who are in ^[a]authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and ^[b]reverence.

¹⁶ Now therefore, send quickly and tell David, saying, ‘Do not spend this night ^(A)in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily cross over, lest the king and all the people who are with him be swallowed up.’ ”

⁴ For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, ^(A)but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.

⁵⁴ So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: ^(A)“Death is swallowed up in victory.”

³ For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? ^(A)Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. ⁴ For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.

⁴⁵ You are your mother’s daughter, ^[a]loathing husband and children; and you are the ^(A)sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and children; ^(B)your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

⁴⁶ “Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells with her daughters to the north of you; and ^(C)your younger sister, who dwells to the south of you, is Sodom and her daughters. ⁴⁷ You did not walk in their ways nor act according to their abominations; but, as if that were too little, ^(D)you became more corrupt than they in all your ways.

⁴⁸ “As I live,” says the Lord God, “neither ^(E)your sister Sodom nor her daughters have done as you and your daughters have done. ⁴⁹ Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, ^(F)fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
