³ And David brought up ^(A)the men who were with him, every man with his household. So they dwelt in the cities of Hebron.

The Growth of David’s Army^(A)

12 Now ^(B)these were the men who came to David at ^(C)Ziklag while he was still a fugitive from Saul the son of Kish; and they were among the mighty men, helpers in the war, ² armed with bows, using both the right hand and ^(D)the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows with the bow. They were of Benjamin, Saul’s brethren.

³ The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of ^[a]Shemaah the Gibeathite; Jeziel and Pelet the sons of Azmaveth; Berachah, and Jehu the Anathothite; ⁴ Ishmaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; Jeremiah, Jahaziel, Johanan, and Jozabad the Gederathite; ⁵ Eluzai, Jerimoth, Bealiah, Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite; ⁶ Elkanah, Jisshiah, Azarel, Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korahites; ⁷ and Joelah and Zebadiah the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.

David’s Conflict with the Amalekites

30 Now it happened, when David and his men came to ^(A)Ziklag, on the third day, that the ^(B)Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire,

² Then David arose ^(A)and went over with the six hundred men who were with him ^(B)to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. ³ So David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, each man with his household, and David ^(C)with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s widow.

⁹ So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the Brook Besor, where those stayed who were left behind. ¹⁰ But David pursued, he and four hundred men; ^(A)for two hundred stayed behind, who were so weary that they could not cross the Brook Besor.

^2 (A)And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was ^[a]discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about ^(B)four hundred men with him.

^11 (A)And they gave them ^[a]Kirjath Arba (Arba was the father of ^(B)Anak), ^(C)which is Hebron, in the mountains of Judah, with the common-land surrounding it. ¹² But ^(D)the fields of the city and its villages they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his possession.
