²² And Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn aside from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I lift up my face to your brother Joab?”

²⁷ And when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him privately, ^(A)and there he struck him ^(B)in the stomach, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

¹⁰ Whatever has come to be has ^(A)already been named, and it is known what man is, and that he is not able to ^(B)dispute with one stronger than he.

¹⁰ You have indeed ^(A)struck down Edom, ^(B)and your heart has lifted you up. Be content with your glory, and stay at home, for why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?”

¹¹ But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah ^(C)faced one another in battle at ^(D)Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah. ¹² And Judah was defeated by Israel, ^(E)and every man fled to his home.
