⁴² So all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is ^(A)a close relative of ours. Why then are you angry over this matter? Have we ever eaten at the king’s expense? Or has he given us any gift?”

¹² You are my brethren, you are ^(A)my bone and my flesh. Why then are you the last to bring back the king?’

From Judah to David^(A)

³ The sons of ^(B)Judah were Er, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him by the daughter of ^(C)Shua, the Canaanitess. ^(D)Er, the firstborn of Judah, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; so He killed him. ⁴ And ^(E)Tamar, his daughter-in-law, ^(F)bore him Perez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.

⁵ The sons of ^(G)Perez were Hezron and Hamul. ⁶ The sons of Zerah were ^[a]Zimri, ^(H)Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and ^[b]Dara—five of them in all.

⁷ The son of ^(I)Carmi was ^[c]Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the ^(J)accursed^[d] thing.

⁸ The son of Ethan was Azariah.

⁹ Also the sons of Hezron who were born to him were Jerahmeel, ^[e]Ram, and ^[f]Chelubai. ¹⁰ Ram ^(K)begot Amminadab, and Amminadab begot Nahshon, ^(L)leader of the children of Judah; ¹¹ Nahshon begot ^[g]Salma, and Salma begot Boaz; ¹² Boaz begot Obed, and Obed begot Jesse; ^13 (M)Jesse begot Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, ^[h]Shimea the third, ¹⁴ Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, ¹⁵ Ozem the sixth, and David the ^(N)seventh.

¹⁶ Now their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. ^(O)And the sons of Zeruiah were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel—three. ¹⁷ Abigail bore Amasa; and the father of Amasa was ^[i]Jether the Ishmaelite.

David Reigns over All Israel^(A)

5 Then all the tribes of Israel ^(B)came to David at Hebron and spoke, saying, “Indeed ^(C)we are your bone and your flesh.
