⁴² All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, “Because the king is ^(A)our close relative. Why then are you angry over this matter? Have we eaten at all at the king's expense? Or has he given us any gift?”

¹² You are my brothers; ^(A)you are my bone and my flesh. Why then should you be the last to bring back the king?’

^3 (A)The sons of Judah: ^(B)Er, Onan and Shelah; these three Bath-shua the Canaanite bore to him. Now Er, Judah's firstborn, was evil in the sight of the Lord, and he put him to death. ⁴ His daughter-in-law ^(C)Tamar also bore him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all.

⁹ The sons of Hezron that were born to him: Jerahmeel, ^(F)Ram, and ^(G)Chelubai. ^10 (H)Ram fathered Amminadab, and ^(I)Amminadab fathered ^(J)Nahshon, prince of the sons of Judah. ¹¹ Nahshon fathered ^(K)Salmon,^[b] Salmon fathered ^(L)Boaz, ¹² Boaz fathered Obed, ^(M)Obed fathered Jesse. ^13 (N)Jesse fathered Eliab his firstborn, Abinadab the second, ^(O)Shimea the third, ¹⁴ Nethanel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, ¹⁵ Ozem the sixth, ^(P)David the seventh. ¹⁶ And their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. ^(Q)The sons of Zeruiah: Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, three. ^17 (R)Abigail bore Amasa, and the father of Amasa was ^(S)Jether the Ishmaelite.
