²³ So the king said to Shimei, “You shall not die.” And the king promised him on oath.^(A)

⁴⁶ Then the king gave the order to Benaiah^(A) son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei^(B) down and he died.

The kingdom was now established^(C) in Solomon’s hands.

⁸ “And remember, you have with you Shimei^(A) son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, who called down bitter curses on me the day I went to Mahanaim.^(B) When he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore^(C) to him by the Lord: ‘I will not put you to death by the sword.’ ⁹ But now, do not consider him innocent. You are a man of wisdom;^(D) you will know what to do to him. Bring his gray head down to the grave in blood.”

³⁷ The day you leave and cross the Kidron Valley,^(A) you can be sure you will die; your blood will be on your own head.”^(B)

¹⁶ People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.^(A)

¹⁵ David asked him, “Can you lead me down to this raiding party?”

He answered, “Swear to me before God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master,^(A) and I will take you down to them.”

¹⁰ Saul swore to her by the Lord, “As surely as the Lord lives, you will not be punished for this.”
