^13 (A)And say to Amasa, ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? ^(B)God do so to me, and more also, if you are not commander of the army before me ^[a]continually in place of Joab.’ ”

²⁵ And Absalom made ^(A)Amasa captain of the army instead of Joab. This Amasa was the son of a man whose name was ^[a]Jithra, an ^[b]Israelite, who had gone in to ^(B)Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother.

² Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, ^(A)“So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time.”

^16 (A)Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; ^(B)Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;

⁵ Then ^(A)Joab came into the house to the king, and said, “Today you have disgraced all your servants who today have saved your life, the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives and the lives of your concubines, ⁶ in that you love your enemies and hate your friends. For you have declared today that you ^[a]regard neither princes nor servants; for today I perceive that if Absalom had lived and all of us had died today, then it would have pleased you well. ⁷ Now therefore, arise, go out and speak ^[b]comfort to your servants. For I swear by the Lord, if you do not go out, not one will stay with you this night. And that will be worse for you than all the evil that has befallen you from your youth until now.”

^29 (A)Let it rest on the head of Joab and on all his father’s house; and let there never fail to be in the ^[a]house of Joab one ^(B)who has a discharge or is a leper, who leans on a staff or falls by the sword, or who lacks bread.” ³⁰ So Joab and Abishai his brother killed Abner, because he had killed their brother ^(C)Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

¹⁸ Then the Spirit ^[a]came upon ^(A)Amasai, chief of the captains, and he said:

So David received them, and made them captains of the troop.

¹⁶ Now their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. ^(A)And the sons of Zeruiah were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel—three. ¹⁷ Abigail bore Amasa; and the father of Amasa was ^[a]Jether the Ishmaelite.
