¹³ The woman said, “Why then have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not convict himself,^(A) for the king has not brought back his banished son?^(B)

³⁷ Absalom fled and went to Talmai^(A) son of Ammihud, the king of Geshur. But King David mourned many days for his son.

³⁸ After Absalom fled and went to Geshur, he stayed there three years.

⁷ Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!^(A) This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed^(B) you^(C) king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

⁴⁰ While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”

“That is your sentence,”^(A) the king of Israel said. “You have pronounced it yourself.”

⁴¹ Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognized him as one of the prophets. ⁴² He said to the king, “This is what the Lord says: ‘You^(B) have set free a man I had determined should die.^[a](C) Therefore it is your life for his life,^(D) your people for his people.’”

² The leaders of all the people of the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of God’s people, four hundred thousand men^(A) armed with swords.

⁴² Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

⁴³ Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”

“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

⁴⁴ Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet,^(A) but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
