Absalom Returns to Jerusalem

14 So Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king’s heart was concerned ^(A)about Absalom.

³⁹ And ^[a]King David ^[b]longed to go to Absalom. For he had been ^(A)comforted concerning Amnon, because he was dead.

¹⁸ Now the ^(A)three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab and Abishai and Asahel. And Asahel was ^(B)as fleet of foot ^(C)as a wild gazelle.

¹⁶ Now their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. ^(A)And the sons of Zeruiah were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel—three.

⁴ But the king ^(A)covered his face, and the king cried out with a loud voice, ^(B)“O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!”

² So the victory that day was turned into ^(A)mourning for all the people. For the people heard it said that day, “The king is grieved for his son.”

³³ Then the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept. And as he went, he said thus: ^(A)“O my son Absalom—my son, my son Absalom—if only I had died in your place! O Absalom my son, ^(B)my son!”
