³⁹ And the heart of^[a] the king went out, yearning for Absalom, for he was now consoled over the death of Amnon.^(A)

¹² In course of time the wife of Judah, Shua’s daughter, died; when Judah’s time of mourning was over,^[a] he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.^(A)

³⁵ All his sons and all his daughters sought to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted and said, “No, I shall go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” Thus his father bewailed him.^(A)

⁶⁷ Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.^(A)

²⁶ for he has been longing for^[a] all of you and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill.

¹⁹ But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, he perceived that the child was dead, and David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.”

He went into the house of the Lord and worshiped; he then went to his own house, and when he asked, they set food before him, and he ate.^{(A) 21} Then his servants said to him, “What is this thing that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while it was alive, but when the child died, you rose and ate food.” ²² He said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept, for I said, ‘Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me, and the child may live.’^{(B) 23} But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”^(C)

³² Your sons and daughters shall be given to another people while you look on; you will strain your eyes looking for them all day but be powerless to do anything.^(A)

³⁰ Even though you had to go because you longed greatly for your father’s house, why did you steal my gods?”^(A)
