Eliseo sana a Naamán
5 Naamán, comandante del ejército del rey de Aram, era un hombre de mucho prestigio y gozaba del favor de su rey porque, por medio de él, el Señor había dado victorias a su país. Era un soldado valiente, pero tenía una enfermedad en la piel.
2 En cierta ocasión los arameos, que habían salido a merodear, capturaron a una muchacha israelita y la hicieron criada de la esposa de Naamán. 3 Un día la muchacha dijo a su ama: «Ojalá el amo fuera a ver al profeta que hay en Samaria, porque él lo sanaría de su enfermedad en la piel».[a]
4 Naamán fue a contarle al rey lo que la muchacha israelita había dicho. 5 El rey de Aram le respondió:
—Bien, puedes ir; yo le mandaré una carta al rey de Israel.
Y así Naamán se fue, llevando diez talentos[b] de plata, seis mil siclos[c] de oro y diez mudas de ropa. 6 La carta que le llevó al rey de Israel decía: «Cuando te llegue esta carta, verás que el portador es Naamán, uno de mis oficiales. Te lo envío para que lo sanes de su enfermedad en la piel».
7 Al leer la carta, el rey de Israel se rasgó las vestiduras y exclamó: «¿Y acaso soy Dios, capaz de dar vida o muerte, para que este hombre me pida sanar a uno con su piel enferma? ¡Fíjense bien que me está buscando pleito!».
8 Cuando Eliseo, hombre de Dios, se enteró de que el rey de Israel se había rasgado las vestiduras, le envió este mensaje: «¿Por qué está usted tan molesto?[d] ¡Mándeme usted a ese hombre para que sepa que hay profeta en Israel!». 9 Así que Naamán, con sus caballos y sus carros, fue a la casa de Eliseo y se detuvo ante la puerta. 10 Entonces Eliseo envió un mensajero a que le dijera: «Ve y zambúllete siete veces en el río Jordán; así tu piel sanará y quedarás limpio».
11 Naamán se enfureció y se fue, quejándose: «¡Yo creí que el profeta saldría a recibirme personalmente para invocar el nombre del Señor su Dios, y que con un movimiento de la mano me sanaría la piel de mi enfermedad! 12 ¿Acaso los ríos de Damasco, el Abaná y el Farfar, no son mejores que toda el agua de Israel? ¿Acaso no podría zambullirme en ellos y quedar limpio?». Furioso, dio media vuelta y se marchó.
13 Entonces sus criados se acercaron para aconsejarle: «Señor,[e] si el profeta le hubiera mandado hacer algo complicado, ¿usted no le habría hecho caso? ¡Con más razón si lo único que le dice a usted es que se zambulla, y así quedará limpio!». 14 Así que Naamán bajó al Jordán y se sumergió siete veces, según se lo había ordenado el hombre de Dios. ¡Entonces su piel se volvió como la de un niño y quedó limpio! 15 Luego Naamán volvió con todos sus acompañantes y, presentándose ante el hombre de Dios, dijo:
—Ahora reconozco que no hay Dios en todo el mundo, excepto en Israel. Le ruego a usted aceptar un regalo de su servidor.
16 Pero Eliseo respondió:
—¡Tan cierto como que vive el Señor, a quien yo sirvo, no voy a aceptar nada!
Y por más que insistió Naamán, Eliseo no accedió.
17 —En ese caso —persistió Naamán—, permítame usted llevarme dos cargas de esta tierra,[f] ya que de aquí en adelante su servidor no va a ofrecerle holocaustos ni sacrificios a ningún otro dios, sino solo al Señor. 18 Y, cuando mi señor el rey vaya a adorar en el templo de Rimón y se apoye de mi brazo, y yo me vea obligado a adorar allí, desde ahora ruego al Señor que me perdone por adorar en ese templo.
19 —Puedes irte en paz —respondió Eliseo.
Naamán se fue y ya había recorrido cierta distancia 20 cuando Guiezi, el criado de Eliseo, hombre de Dios, pensó: «Mi amo ha sido demasiado bondadoso con este arameo Naamán, pues no le aceptó nada de lo que había traído. Pero, tan cierto como que el Señor vive, yo voy a correr tras él, a ver si me da algo».
21 Así que Guiezi se fue para alcanzar a Naamán. Cuando este lo vio correr tras él, se bajó de su carro para recibirlo y lo saludó. 22 Respondiendo al saludo, Guiezi dijo:
—Mi amo me ha enviado con este mensaje: “Dos jóvenes de la comunidad de profetas acaban de llegar de la región montañosa de Efraín. Te pido que me des para ellos un talento[g] de plata y dos mudas de ropa”.
23 —Por favor, llévate dos talentos —respondió Naamán, e insistió en que los aceptara.
Echó entonces los talentos de plata en dos sacos, junto con las dos mudas de ropa, y todo esto se lo entregó a dos criados para que lo llevaran delante de Guiezi. 24 Al llegar a la colina, Guiezi tomó los sacos y los guardó en la casa; después despidió a los hombres y estos se fueron. 25 Entonces Guiezi se presentó ante su amo.
—¿De dónde vienes, Guiezi? —preguntó Eliseo.
—Su servidor no ha ido a ninguna parte —respondió Guiezi.
26 Eliseo respondió:
—¿No estaba yo presente en espíritu cuando aquel hombre se bajó de su carro para recibirte? ¿Acaso es este el momento de recibir dinero y ropa, olivares y viñedos, ovejas y bueyes, criados y criadas? 27 Ahora la enfermedad de Naamán se te pegará a ti y a tus descendientes para siempre.
No bien había salido Guiezi de la presencia de Eliseo cuando ya estaba blanco como la nieve por causa de la enfermedad en su piel.

5 Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the Lord had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper.
2 And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman's wife.
3 And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy.
4 And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel.
5 And the king of Syria said, Go to, go, and I will send a letter unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment.
6 And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, Now when this letter is come unto thee, behold, I have therewith sent Naaman my servant to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his leprosy.
7 And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see how he seeketh a quarrel against me.
8 And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.
9 So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha.
10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.
11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the Lord his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.
12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.
13 And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?
14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
15 And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant.
16 But he said, As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused.
17 And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules' burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the Lord.
18 In this thing the Lord pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, the Lord pardon thy servant in this thing.
19 And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way.
20 But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the Lord liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him.
21 So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?
22 And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments.
23 And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him.
24 And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed.
25 But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no whither.
26 And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?
27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

5 অরামের রাজার সেনাপতি ছিল নামান। রাজার কাছে নামান ছিল একজন মহান এবং খুব শ্রদ্ধেয় ব্যক্তি, কারণ প্রভু সব সময় তাঁর মাধ্যমে অরামকে বিজয়ের পথে নিয়ে যেতেন। নামান খুবই শক্তিশালী ও মহান হলেও তিনি কুষ্ঠ রোগাক্রান্ত ছিলেন।
2 অরামীয়রা বহুবার ইস্রায়েলে যুদ্ধ করতে সেনাবাহিনী পাঠিয়েছিল। এইসব সেনারা এখানকার লোকদের ক্রীতদাস করেও নিয়ে গিয়েছে। একবার তারা ইস্রায়েল থেকে একটা বাচ্চা মেয়েকে তুলে নিয়ে যায়। কালক্রমে এই ছোট মেয়েটি নামানের স্ত্রীর এক দাসীতে পরিণত হয়। 3 মেয়েটি নামানের স্ত্রীকে বলল, “মনিব শমরিয়ায় বাসকারী ভাববাদীর সঙ্গে দেখা করলে তিনি নিশ্চয়ই তাঁর কুষ্ঠরোগ সারিয়ে দিতেন।”
4 নামান তাঁর মনিবকে (অরামের রাজাকে) গিয়ে ইস্রায়েলীয় মেয়েটা কি বলেছে তা বললেন।
5 তখন অরামের রাজা বললেন, “ঠিক আছে, তুমি এখনই যাও। আমি ইস্রায়েলের রাজাকে একটা চিঠি দিচ্ছি।”
নামান তখন 750 পাউণ্ড রূপো, 6000 টুকরো সোনা আর দশ প্রস্থ পোশাক উপহার স্বরূপ নিলেন এবং ইস্রায়েলে গেলেন। 6 নামানের সঙ্গে ইস্রায়েলের রাজাকে লেখা অরামের রাজার চিঠিও ছিল যাতে লেখা ছিল, “আমি আমার সেবক নামানকে কুষ্ঠরোগ সারানোর জন্য আপনার কাছে পাঠালাম।”
7 চিঠিটা পড়ে ইস্রায়েলের রাজা মনোকষ্টে তাঁর পোশাক ছিঁড়ে ফেলে বললেন, “আমি তো আর ঈশ্বর নই! জীবন-মৃত্যুর ওপর আমার যখন কোন হাত নেই, তখন কেন অরামের রাজা কুষ্ঠরোগাক্রান্ত একজনকে আমার কাছে সারিয়ে তোলার জন্য পাঠালেন? এটা খুবই স্পষ্ট যে তিনি একটি যুদ্ধ বাধাবার পরিকল্পনা করছেন!”
8 ঈশ্বরের লোক ইলীশায় খবর পেলেন শোকার্ত ইস্রায়েলের রাজা তাঁর পোশাক ছিঁড়ে ফেলেছেন। তখন তিনি রাজাকে খবর পাঠালেন: “তুমি কেন পোশাক ছিঁড়ে কষ্ট পাচ্ছ? নামানকে আমার কাছে আসতে দাও, তাহলে ও বুঝবে ইস্রায়েলে সত্যি সত্যিই একজন ভাববাদী বাস করে!”
9 নামান তখন তাঁর রথ ও ঘোড়া নিয়ে ইলীশায়ের বাড়ির বাইরে এসে দাঁড়ালেন। 10 ইলীশায় একজনকে দিয়ে খবর পাঠালেন, “যাও যর্দন নদীতে গিয়ে সাত বার স্নান করো, তাহলেই তোমার চামড়া ঠিক হয়ে যাবে আর তুমিও পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্ন হয়ে উঠবে।”
11 নামান খুবই ক্রুদ্ধ হয়ে চলে গেলেন। তিনি বললেন, “আমি ভেবেছিলাম একবার অন্তত ইলীশায় বাইরে এসে তাঁর প্রভু ঈশ্বরের নাম নিয়ে আমার গায়ের ওপর হাত নেড়ে আমার কুষ্ঠরোগ সারিয়ে তুলবেন! 12 দম্মেশকের অবানা আর পর্পর নদীর জল ইস্রায়েলের যে কোন জলের থেকেই ভালো! ওই সব নদীতে গা ধুলে কেন হবে না?” নামান প্রচণ্ড রেগে গিয়ে ফিরে যাবেন বলে ঠিক করলেন।
13 কিন্তু নামানের ভৃত্যরা তাঁকে গিয়ে বললো, “মনিব, ভাববাদী যদি আপনাকে খুব শক্ত কিছু বলতেন, আপনি নিশ্চয়ই তা শুনতেন, তাই না? উনি যখন আপনাকে খুব সহজ একটা কাজ বলেছেন, সেটা অবশ্যই করা উচিৎ। উনি তো বলেই ছিলেন, ‘ধুলেই তুমি শুচি হয়ে যাবে।’”
14 নামান তখন ইলীশায়ের কথামতো, যর্দন নদীর জলে সাতবার ডুব দিলেন এবং নামানের দেহ পরিষ্কার-পরিচ্ছন্ন ও নিরাময় হয়ে উঠল। একেবারে শিশুদের ত্বকের মতোই নরম হয়ে গেল!
15 নামান আর তাঁর দলের সবাই তখন ইলীশায়ের কাছে ফিরে এলেন। ইলীশায়ের সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে নামান বললেন, “এতদিনে আমি বুঝলাম ইস্রায়েল ছাড়া পৃথিবীতে আর কোথাও কোন ঈশ্বর নেই! এখন আপনি অনুগ্রহ করে আমার কাছ থেকে একটা উপহার গ্রহণ করুন!”
16 কিন্তু ইলীশায় বললেন, “আমি প্রভুর সেবা করি এবং আমার প্রতিজ্ঞা, যতদিন প্রভু আছেন আমি কোন উপহার নিতে পারব না।”
নামান উপহার নেবার জন্য ইলীশায়কে অনেক অনুনয় বিনয় করেও টলাতে পারলেন না। 17 তখন নামান বললেন, “আপনি যখন নিতান্তই কোন উপহার নেবেন না, অন্তত আমাকে ইস্রায়েল থেকে দু-টুকরি এখানকার ধূলো আমার দুটো খচ্চরের পিঠে চাপিয়ে নিয়ে যেতে অনুমতি দিন। কারণ এরপর থেকে আমি আর কোন মূর্ত্তিকেই হোমবলি বা কোন নৈবেদ্য দেব না। আমি শুধুমাত্র প্রভুকেই বলিদান করব। 18 আর আমি আগে থাকতেই ক্ষমা চেয়ে প্রভুর কাছে প্রার্থনা করে নিচ্ছি: ভবিষ্যতে আমার মনিব অরামরাজ যখন রিম্মোণের মন্দিরের মূর্ত্তিকে পূজো দিতে যাবেন, তাঁর ওপর ভর নামবে বলে আমায় সেখানে মাথা নীচু করতেই হবে। কিন্তু প্রভু যেন সেজন্য আমাকে ক্ষমা করেন।”
19 ইলীশায় তখন নামানকে আশীর্বাদ করে বললেন, “যাও সুখে শান্তিতে থাকো।”
নামান যখন ইলীশায়ের কাছ থেকে বিদায় নিয়ে কিছু দূর গিয়েছেন, 20 ইলীশায়ের ভৃত্য গেহসি বলল, “দেখেছো, আমার প্রভু কোন উপহার না নিয়েই অরামীয় নামানকে ছেড়ে দিলেন। আমি বরঞ্চ এই বেলা গিয়ে ওর কাছ থেকে কিছু হাতানোর ব্যবস্থা করি!” 21 এই বলে গেহসি নামানের পেছন পেছন দৌড়তে লাগল।
নামান যখন দেখতে পেলেন একজন কেউ ছুটতে ছুটতে আসছে তিনি তখন রথ থেকে নেমে গেহসিকে প্রশ্ন করলেন, “কি, সব ঠিক আছে তো?”
22 গেহসি বললো, “হ্যাঁ সব ঠিকই আছে। আমার মনিব আমাকে বলে পাঠালেন, ‘ইফ্রয়িমের পার্বত্য অঞ্চলের ভাববাদীদের দলের দুজন এসেছে। অনুগ্রহ করে তাদের যদি 75 পাউণ্ড রূপো আর দু-প্রস্থ পোশাক-আশাক দাও তো বড়-ভালো হয়।’”
23 একথা শুনে নামান বললেন, “75 পাউণ্ড কেন? 150 পাউণ্ড নাও!” তারপর নামান দুটো বস্তায় 150 পাউণ্ড রূপো ভরে, তার সঙ্গে দু-প্রস্থ জামাকাপড় দিয়ে জোর করে তাঁর দুজন ভৃত্যকে গেহসির সঙ্গে পাঠালেন। 24 ভৃত্যরা এইসব জিনিস বয়ে পাহাড় পর্যন্ত নিয়ে আসার পর, গেহসি জিনিসগুলি নিয়ে ওদের ফেরৎ পাঠিয়ে দিল। তারপর ও এই সমস্ত জিনিস বাড়িতে লুকিয়ে রাখলো।
25 গেহসি এসে মনিবের সামনে দাঁড়ানোর পর ইলীশায় জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, “তুমি কোথায় গিয়েছিলে?”
গেহসি উত্তর দিল, “কোথাও না তো।”
26 ইলীশায় তখন বললেন, “শোন, নামান যখন রথ থেকে নেমে তোমার সঙ্গে দেখা করে, তখন আমার হৃদয় তোমার সঙ্গে ছিল, এটা টাকাপয়সা, জামাকাপড়, জলপাই কুঞ্জ, দ্রাক্ষা ক্ষেত, গরু, মেষ, দাস-দাসী নেবার সময় নয়। 27 এখন নামানের রোগ তোমার আর তোমাদের উত্তরপুরুষদের হবে। তোমাদের কুষ্ঠ হবে।”
গেহসি যখন ইলীশায়ের কাছ থেকে চলে গেল, তখন ওর গায়ের চামড়া বরফের মত সাদা হয়ে গেল।

Naaman Healed of Leprosy
5 Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram.(A) He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.[a](B)
2 Now bands of raiders(C) from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. 3 She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet(D) who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.”
4 Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. 5 “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents[b] of silver, six thousand shekels[c] of gold and ten sets of clothing.(E) 6 The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”
7 As soon as the king of Israel read the letter,(F) he tore his robes and said, “Am I God?(G) Can I kill and bring back to life?(H) Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel(I) with me!”
8 When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: “Why have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet(J) in Israel.” 9 So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash(K) yourself seven times(L) in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”
11 But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand(M) over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. 12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters(N) of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.(O)
13 Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father,(P) if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times,(Q) as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored(R) and became clean like that of a young boy.(S)
15 Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of God(T). He stood before him and said, “Now I know(U) that there is no God in all the world except in Israel. So please accept a gift(V) from your servant.”
16 The prophet answered, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I will not accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he refused.(W)
17 “If you will not,” said Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be given as much earth(X) as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but the Lord. 18 But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing: When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he is leaning(Y) on my arm and I have to bow there also—when I bow down in the temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.”
19 “Go in peace,”(Z) Elisha said.
After Naaman had traveled some distance, 20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “My master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the Lord(AA) lives, I will run after him and get something from him.”
21 So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. “Is everything all right?” he asked.
22 “Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent me to say, ‘Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent[d] of silver and two sets of clothing.’”(AB)
23 “By all means, take two talents,” said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. 24 When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left.
25 When he went in and stood before his master, Elisha asked him, “Where have you been, Gehazi?”
“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.
26 But Elisha said to him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you?
