Los moabitas se rebelan
3 En el año dieciocho de Josafat, rey de Judá, Jorán, hijo de Acab, comenzó a reinar sobre Israel en Samaria y reinó doce años. 2 Jorán hizo lo malo ante los ojos del Señor, aunque no tanto como su padre y su madre, pues mandó que se quitara una piedra sagrada que su padre había erigido en honor de Baal. 3 Sin embargo, Jorán se aferró a los mismos pecados con que Jeroboán, hijo de Nabat, había hecho pecar a los israelitas, pues no se apartó de esos pecados.
4 Ahora bien, Mesá, rey de Moab, criaba ovejas y como tributo anual entregaba al rey de Israel cien mil ovejas y la lana de cien mil corderos. 5 Pero al morir Acab, el rey de Moab se rebeló contra el rey de Israel. 6 Entonces el rey Jorán salió de Samaria, movilizó a todo el ejército de Israel, 7 y envió este mensaje a Josafat, rey de Judá:
—El rey de Moab se ha rebelado contra mí. ¿Irías conmigo a pelear contra Moab?
—Claro que sí —le respondió Josafat—. Estoy a tu disposición, lo mismo que mi ejército y mi caballería. 8 ¿Qué ruta tomaremos?
—La ruta del desierto de Edom —contestó Jorán.
9 Fue así como los reyes de Israel, Judá y Edom se pusieron en marcha. Durante siete días anduvieron por el desierto, hasta que el ejército y los animales se quedaron sin agua.
10 —¡Ay! —exclamó el rey de Israel—. ¡El Señor ha reunido a tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de los moabitas!
11 Pero Josafat preguntó:
—¿Acaso no hay aquí un profeta del Señor, para que consultemos al Señor por medio de él?
Un oficial del rey de Israel contestó:
—Aquí cerca está Eliseo, hijo de Safat, el que servía a Elías.[a]
12 —Pues él puede darnos palabra del Señor —comentó Josafat.
Así que el rey de Israel fue a ver a Eliseo, acompañado de Josafat y del rey de Edom. 13 Pero Eliseo dijo al rey de Israel:
—¿Qué tengo yo que ver con usted? Váyase a consultar a los profetas de su padre y de su madre.
—No —respondió el rey de Israel—, pues el Señor nos ha reunido a los tres para entregarnos en manos de los moabitas.
14 Eliseo respondió:
—Tan cierto como que vive el Señor de los Ejércitos, a quien sirvo, te aseguro que si no fuera por el respeto que le tengo a Josafat, rey de Judá, ni siquiera le daría a usted la cara. 15 En fin, ¡que me traigan un músico!
Mientras el músico tañía el arpa, la mano del Señor vino sobre Eliseo 16 que dijo:
—Así dice el Señor: “Abran zanjas por todo este valle, 17 pues aunque no vean viento ni lluvia —dice el Señor—, este valle se llenará de agua, de modo que podrán beber ustedes y todos sus animales”. 18 Esto es poca cosa para el Señor, que además entregará a Moab en manos de ustedes. 19 De hecho, ustedes destruirán todas las ciudades fortificadas y las otras ciudades principales. Cortarán los mejores árboles, cegarán los manantiales y sembrarán de piedras los campos fértiles.
20 A la mañana siguiente, a la hora de la ofrenda, toda el área se inundó con el agua que venía de la región de Edom.
21 Ahora bien, cuando los moabitas se enteraron de que los reyes habían salido para atacarlos, movilizaron a todos los que podían servir en el ejército y tomaron posiciones en la frontera. 22 Al levantarse ellos por la mañana, el sol se reflejaba sobre el agua y a los moabitas les pareció que estaba teñida en sangre. 23 «¡Es sangre de batalla! —exclamaron—. Esos reyes deben de haber peleado y se han matado unos a otros. ¡Vamos, Moab, al saqueo!».
24 Cuando los moabitas llegaron al campamento de Israel, los israelitas les hicieron frente y los derrotaron. Aquellos se dieron a la fuga, pero los israelitas los persiguieron, los aniquilaron 25 y destruyeron sus ciudades. Cada uno tiró una piedra en los campos fértiles de Moab hasta llenarlos; además, cegaron los manantiales y cortaron los mejores árboles. Solo Quir Jaréset quedó en pie, aunque los honderos la cercaron y también lograron conquistarla.
26 El rey de Moab, al ver que perdía la batalla, se llevó consigo a setecientos guerreros armados con espada con el propósito de abrirse paso hasta donde estaba el rey de Edom, pero no logró pasar. 27 Tomó entonces a su hijo primogénito, que había de sucederlo en el trono, y lo ofreció en holocausto sobre la muralla. A raíz de esto, se desató contra Israel una furia incontenible, de modo que los israelitas tuvieron que retirarse y volver a su país.

Moab Revolts
3 Joram[a](A) son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil(B) in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father(C) and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone(D) of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins(E) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab(F) raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs(G) and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled(H) against the king of Israel. 6 So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. 7 He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight(I) against Moab?”
“I will go with you,” he replied. “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
8 “By what route shall we attack?” he asked.
“Through the Desert of Edom,” he answered.
9 So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom.(J) After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them.
10 “What!” exclaimed the king of Israel. “Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?”
11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire(K) of the Lord?”
An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha(L) son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.[b](M)”
12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word(N) of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.”
“No,” the king of Israel answered, “because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.”
14 Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. 15 But now bring me a harpist.”(O)
While the harpist was playing, the hand(P) of the Lord came on Elisha 16 and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. 17 For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water,(Q) and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. 18 This is an easy(R) thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. 19 You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.”
20 The next morning, about the time(S) for offering the sacrifice, there it was—water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.(T)
21 Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to fight against them; so every man, young and old, who could bear arms was called up and stationed on the border. 22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites across the way, the water looked red—like blood. 23 “That’s blood!” they said. “Those kings must have fought and slaughtered each other. Now to the plunder, Moab!”
24 But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and fought them until they fled. And the Israelites invaded the land and slaughtered the Moabites. 25 They destroyed the towns, and each man threw a stone on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up all the springs and cut down every good tree. Only Kir Hareseth(U) was left with its stones in place, but men armed with slings surrounded it and attacked it.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they failed. 27 Then he took his firstborn(V) son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.

2 And he wrought evil in the sight of the Lord; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.
3 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.
4 And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.
5 But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6 And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.
7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.
8 And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.
9 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
10 And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!
11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
12 And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the Lord is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
14 And Elisha said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.
15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.
16 And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.
17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
19 And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.
20 And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21 And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border.
22 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood:
23 And they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.
24 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country.
25 And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.
26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.
27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

যিহোরাম ইস্রায়েলের রাজা হলেন
3 যিহূদায় যিহোশাফটের রাজত্বের 18তম বছরে আহাবের পুত্র যিহোরাম, শমরিয়ায় ইস্রায়েলের রাজা হয়ে বসলেন। তিনি 12 বছর রাজত্ব করেছিলেন। 2 যিহোরাম প্রভুর চোখের সামনে মন্দ কাজ করেছিলেন! তবে তিনি তাঁর পিতা বা মাতার মতো ছিলেন না, কারণ তাঁর পিতা বাল মূর্ত্তির আরাধনার জন্য যে স্মরণস্তম্ভ তৈরী করেছিলেন, তিনি সেটা সরিয়ে দিয়েছিলেন। 3 কিন্তু তিনি পাপ কাজ চালিয়ে গেলেন যা নবাটের পুত্র যারবিয়াম করেছিলেন। যারবিয়াম ইস্রায়েলকে পাপ কাজ করতে বাধ্য করেছিলেন। যিহোরাম এই পাপ আচরণ বন্ধ করেন নি।
মোয়াব ইস্রায়েল থেকে আলাদা হল
4 মোয়াবের রাজা মেশা ছিলেন একজন মেষ বংশ বৃদ্ধিকারক। মেশা ইস্রায়েলের রাজাকে 100,000 মেষ ও 100,000 পুরুষ মেষের উল দিতেন। 5 কিন্তু আহাবের মৃত্যুর পর মোয়াবের রাজা ইস্রায়েলের রাজার বিরুদ্ধে বিদ্রোহ করলেন।
6 তখন রাজা যিহোরাম শমরিয়া থেকে গিয়ে ইস্রায়েলের সমস্ত বাসিন্দাদের জড়ো করলেন এবং 7 যিহোরাম যিহূদার রাজা যিহোশাফটের কাছে বার্তাবাহক পাঠিয়ে বললেন, “মোয়াবের রাজা আমার বিরুদ্ধে বিদ্রোহ করেছে। আপনি কি আমার সঙ্গে মোয়াবের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধে যোগ দেবেন?”
যিহোশাফট বললেন, “হ্যাঁ! আমাদের দুজনের সেনাবাহিনী সম্মিলিত ভাবে যুদ্ধ করবে। আমার লোক, ঘোড়া এসবও আপনার।”
তিন জন রাজা ইলীশায়ের পরামর্শ চাইলেন
8 যিহোশাফট যিহোরামকে প্রশ্ন করলেন, “আমরা কোন্ পথে যাবো?”
যিহোরাম বললেন, “আমরা ইদোমের মরুভূমির মধ্যে দিয়ে যাবো।”
9 ইস্রায়েলের রাজা তখন যিহূদা ও ইদোমের রাজার সঙ্গে যোগ দিলেন। তাঁরা প্রায় সাতদিন চললেন। পথে সেনাবাহিনী ও তাঁদের জন্তু জানোয়ারদের জন্য উপযুক্ত পরিমাণ জল তাঁরা পাননি। 10 ইস্রায়েলের রাজা যিহোরাম বললেন, “আমার মনে হয়, মোয়াবীয়দের কাছে পরাজিত হবার জন্য প্রভু আমাদের তিন জন রাজাকে একত্রিত করেছেন!”
11 যিহোশাফট বললেন, “প্রভুর কোন ভাববাদী কি এখানে চারপাশে নেই? আমরা কি করব তাঁকে জিজ্ঞেস করা যাক।”
তখন ইস্রায়েলের রাজার ভৃত্যদের একজন বললো, “শাফটের পুত্র ইলীশায়, যিনি এলিয়র শিষ্য ছিলেন, তিনি এখানে আছেন।”
12 যিহোশাফট বললেন, “আমি শুনেছি প্রভু নিজে ইলীশায়ের মুখ দিয়ে কথা বলেন!”
তখন ইস্রায়েলের রাজা যিহোরাম, যিহোশাফট ও ইদোমের রাজা ইলীশায়ের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে গেলেন।
13 ইলীশায় ইস্রায়েলের রাজা যিহোরামকে প্রশ্ন করলেন, “আমি আপনার জন্য কি করতে পারি? আপনি কেন আপনার পিতামাতার ভাববাদীর কাছেই যাচ্ছেন না?”
তখন ইস্রায়েলের রাজা ইলীশায়কে বললেন, “না, আমরা আপনার সঙ্গে দেখা করতে এসেছি, কারণ মোয়াবীয়দের কাছে হেরে যাবার জন্যই প্রভু আমাদের তিন জন রাজাকে এনে একত্রিত করেছেন।”
14 ইলীশায় বললেন, “আমি সর্বশক্তিমান প্রভুর সেবক। তবে আমি যিহূদার রাজা যিহোশাফটকে শ্রদ্ধা করি বলেই এখানে এসেছি। যিহোশাফট এখানে না থাকলে, আমি আপনার দিকে হয়ত মনোযোগ দিতাম না। 15 যাই হোক্ এখন আমার কাছে এমন একজনকে নিয়ে আসুন যে বীণা বাজাতে পারে।”
বীণাবাদক এসে বীণা বাজাতে শুরু করলে প্রভুর শক্তি ইলীশায়ের ওপর এসে ভর করল। 16 তখন ইলীশায় বলে উঠলেন, “প্রভু বলেন, ‘নদীর তলদেশ খাতময় করে দাও।’ 17 তোমরা কোন বাতাস বা বাদলা দেখতে না পেলেও, জলে ভরে উঠবে সমভূমি। তখন তোমরা আর তোমাদের গরু, বাছুর এবং অন্যান্য জন্তু-জানোয়ার খাবার জল পাবে। 18 প্রভুর পক্ষে এটি খুব সহজ, তিনি তোমাদের জন্য মোয়াবীয়দের পরাজিত করবেন। 19 প্রত্যেকটা সুদৃঢ়, শক্ত-পোক্ত আর ভালো শহর তোমরা আক্রমণ করবে। কেটে ফেলবে প্রত্যেকটা সতেজ-সবল গাছ। প্রত্যেকটা ঝর্ণার উৎস বন্ধ করে দেবে আর পাথর ছুঁড়ে ছুঁড়ে নষ্ট করবে প্রত্যেকটা ভালো ক্ষেত।”
20 সকাল হলে, প্রভাতী বলিদানের সময়ে ইদোমের দিক থেকে জল এসে সমভূমি ভরিয়ে দিল।
21 মোয়াবের লোকরা শুনতে পেল, রাজারা তাদের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করতে এসেছেন। তখন তারা মোয়াবে বর্ম পরার মতো বয়স যাদের হয়েছে তাদের সবাইকে এক জায়গায় জড়ো করে যুদ্ধ বাধার জন্য সীমান্তে অপেক্ষা করে থাকলো। 22 মোয়াবের লোকরা সকাল সকাল ঘুম থেকে উঠে সমতল ভূমির উপর জল দেখতে পেল। সূর্যকে পূব আকাশের রাঙা আলোয় রক্তের মত লাল দেখাচ্ছিল। 23 তারা সমস্বরে বলে উঠল, “দেখ, দেখ রক্ত! রাজারা নিশ্চয়ই একে অপরের বিরুদ্ধে যুদ্ধ করে মারা পড়েছে। চল এবার আমরা গিয়ে ওদের গা থেকে দামী জিনিসগুলো নিয়ে নিই!”
24 মোয়াবীয়রা ইস্রায়েলীয়দের কাছে আসতেই ইস্রায়েলীয়রা মোয়াবীয় সেনাবাহিনীকে আক্রমণ করলো। মোয়াবীয়রা তাদের থেকে দৌড়ে পালিয়ে গেল, কিন্তু ইস্রায়েলীয়রা তাদের ধাওয়া করে যুদ্ধ করল। 25 একের পর এক শহর ধ্বংস করে তারা সমস্ত ঝর্ণার মুখ বন্ধ করে দিল। তারা উর্বর ক্ষেত পাথর ছুঁড়ে ছুঁড়ে ভর্ত্তি করে দিল, সমস্ত সতেজ গাছ কেটে ফেলল। সারা পথ যুদ্ধ করতে করতে তারা কীর্ হরাসত পর্যন্ত গেল। তারা শহরটাকে চারদিক থেকে ঘিরে ফেলে অধিকার করল।
26 মোয়াবের রাজা দেখলেন, তাঁর পক্ষে আর যুদ্ধ করা সম্ভব না। তারপর তিনি সবলে সৈন্যব্যূহ ভেদ করে ইদোমের রাজাকে হত্যা করবার জন্য তাঁর সঙ্গে 700 সৈনিক নিলেন। কিন্তু তারা ইদোমের রাজার ধারে কাছেও পৌঁছতে পারলো না। 27 তখন মোয়াবের রাজা তাঁর জ্যেষ্ঠপুত্র যুবরাজকে শহরের বাইরে চারপাশের দেওয়ালের কাছে নিয়ে গিয়ে হোমবলি হিসেবে উৎসর্গ করলেন। এতে ইস্রায়েলীয়রা অত্যন্ত বিপর্য্যস্ত হল, তাই মোয়াবের রাজাকে ছেড়ে দিয়ে তারা তাদের দেশে ফিরে গেল।
