Rebelión y derrota de Moab
3 Joram, hijo de Acab, comenzó a reinar sobre Israel en Samaria en el año dieciocho de Josafat, rey de Judá(A); y reinó doce años. 2 Hizo lo malo ante los ojos del Señor, aunque no como su padre y su madre, pues quitó el pilar sagrado de Baal(B) que su padre había hecho(C). 3 Sin embargo, se aferró a los pecados de Jeroboam(D), hijo de Nabat, con los que hizo pecar a Israel(E), y no se apartó de ellos.
4 Y Mesa, rey de Moab, era criador de ovejas, y pagaba al rey de Israel 100,000 corderos(F) y la lana de 100,000 carneros. 5 Pero cuando Acab murió, el rey de Moab se rebeló contra el rey de Israel(G). 6 Y aquel mismo día el rey Joram salió de Samaria y alistó a todo Israel. 7 Y fue y envió palabra a Josafat, rey de Judá, diciendo: «El rey de Moab se ha rebelado contra mí. ¿Irás conmigo a pelear contra Moab?». Y él respondió: «Subiré. Yo soy como tú, mi pueblo como tu pueblo, mis caballos como tus caballos(H)». 8 Y le preguntó: «¿Por qué camino subiremos?». Y Joram respondió: «Por el camino del desierto de Edom».
9 Entonces el rey de Israel(I) fue con el rey de Judá(J) y el rey de Edom(K); y después de dar un rodeo de siete días de camino, no había agua para el ejército ni para los animales que los seguían. 10 Así que el rey de Israel dijo: «¡Ah! Porque el Señor ha llamado a estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de Moab». 11 Pero Josafat dijo: «¿No hay aquí un profeta del Señor para que consultemos al Señor por medio de él(L)?». Y uno de los siervos del rey de Israel respondió: «Aquí está Eliseo, hijo de Safat(M), el que vertía agua en las manos de Elías(N)». 12 Y Josafat dijo: «La palabra del Señor está con él». Así que el rey de Israel y Josafat y el rey de Edom fueron adonde estaba Eliseo.
13 Entonces Eliseo dijo al rey de Israel: «¿Qué tengo que ver con usted? Vaya a los profetas de su padre y a los profetas de su madre(O)». Y el rey de Israel le dijo: «No, porque el Señor ha llamado a estos tres reyes para entregarlos en mano de Moab». 14 Y Eliseo dijo: «Vive el Señor de los ejércitos, ante quien estoy(P), que si no fuera por respeto a la presencia de Josafat, rey de Judá, no lo miraría ni lo atendería. 15 Pero tráiganme ahora un músico(Q)».
Y sucedió que mientras el músico tocaba, la mano del Señor vino sobre Eliseo(R), 16 y él dijo: «Así dice el Señor: “Hagan en este valle muchas zanjas”. 17 Pues así dice el Señor: “No verán viento, ni verán lluvias; sin embargo ese valle se llenará de agua(S), y beberán ustedes y sus ganados y sus bestias. 18 Aun esto es poco ante los ojos del Señor(T); también entregará en manos de ustedes a los moabitas. 19 Ustedes destruirán[a] toda ciudad fortificada y toda ciudad principal, talarán todo árbol bueno, cegarán todas las fuentes de agua y dañarán con piedras todo terreno fértil(U)”». 20 Y aconteció que por la mañana, a la hora de ofrecer el sacrificio(V), el agua vino por el camino de Edom, y la tierra se llenó de agua.
21 Y todos los moabitas oyeron que los reyes habían subido a pelear contra ellos. Y convocaron a todos, desde los que podían ponerse armadura[b] en adelante, y se colocaron en la frontera. 22 Se levantaron muy de mañana, y cuando el sol brilló sobre el agua, los moabitas vieron el agua frente a ellos tan roja como la sangre. 23 Entonces dijeron: «Esto es sangre; sin duda los reyes han peleado entre sí, y se han matado unos a otros. Ahora pues, ¡Moab, al despojo!». 24 Pero cuando llegaron al campamento de Israel, los israelitas se levantaron e hirieron a los moabitas, y estos huyeron delante de ellos; y los israelitas invadieron el país matando a los moabitas. 25 Destruyeron las ciudades, y cada uno arrojó su piedra en toda parcela de tierra buena, y las llenaron. Cegaron todas las fuentes de agua y talaron todos los árboles buenos(W), hasta dejar en Kir Hareset(X) solo sus piedras; no obstante, los honderos la rodearon y la destruyeron[c]. 26 Al ver el rey de Moab que la batalla arreciaba contra él, tomó consigo 700 hombres que sacaban espada, para abrir brecha hacia el rey de Edom, pero no pudieron. 27 Entonces tomó a su hijo primogénito que había de reinar en su lugar, y lo ofreció en holocausto sobre la muralla. Y hubo gran ira contra los israelitas, quienes se apartaron de allí(Y) y regresaron a su tierra.

Israel’s King Joram
3 Joram son of Ahab became king over Israel in Samaria during the eighteenth year of Judah’s King Jehoshaphat, and he reigned twelve years.(A) 2 He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, but not like his father and mother,(B) for he removed the sacred pillar of Baal his father had made. 3 Nevertheless, Joram clung to the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.(C) He did not turn away from them.
Moab’s Rebellion against Israel
4 King Mesha of Moab(D) was a sheep breeder. He used to pay(E) the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of one hundred thousand rams,(F) 5 but when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.(G) 6 So King Joram marched out from Samaria at that time and mobilized all Israel. 7 Then he sent a message to King Jehoshaphat(H) of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me.(I) Will you go with me to fight against Moab?”
Jehoshaphat said, “I will go. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”(J)
8 He asked, “Which route should we take?”
He replied, “The route of the Wilderness of Edom.”
9 So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of Edom(K) set out. After they had traveled their indirect route for seven days, they had no water for the army or the animals with them.
10 Then the king of Israel said, “Oh no, the Lord has summoned these three kings, only to hand them over to Moab.”
11 But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there a prophet of the Lord here? Let’s inquire of the Lord through him.”(L)
One of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha son of Shaphat,(M) who used to pour water on Elijah’s hands, is here.”
12 Jehoshaphat affirmed, “The word of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went to him.(N)
13 However, Elisha said to King Joram of Israel, “What do we have in common? Go to the prophets of your father and your mother!” (O)
But the king of Israel replied, “No, because it is the Lord who has summoned these three kings to hand them over to Moab.”
14 Elisha responded, “By the life of the Lord of Armies,(P) before whom I stand: If I did not have respect for King Jehoshaphat of Judah,(Q) I wouldn’t look at you; I would not take notice of you. 15 Now, bring me a musician.”(R)
While the musician played,(S) the Lord’s hand(T) came on Elisha. 16 Then he said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Dig ditch after ditch in this wadi.’ 17 For the Lord says, ‘You will not see wind or rain, but the wadi will be filled with water,(U) and you will drink—you and your cattle and your animals.’ 18 This is easy in the Lord’s sight.(V) He will also hand Moab over to you.(W) 19 Then you will attack every fortified city and every choice city. You will cut down every good tree and stop up every spring. You will ruin every good piece of land with stones.”
20 About the time for the grain offering(X) the next morning, water suddenly came from the direction of Edom and filled the land.
21 All Moab had heard that the kings(Y) had come up to fight against them. So all who could bear arms, from the youngest to the oldest, were summoned and took their stand at the border. 22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water, and the Moabites saw that the water across from them was red like blood.(Z) 23 “This is blood!” they exclaimed. “The kings(AA) have crossed swords[a] and their men have killed one another. So, to the spoil, Moab!”
24 However, when the Moabites came to Israel’s camp, the Israelites attacked them, and they fled from them. So Israel went into the land attacking the Moabites. 25 They would destroy the cities, and each of them would throw a stone to cover every good piece of land. They would stop up every spring and cut down every good tree. This went on until only the buildings of Kir-hareseth(AB) were left. Then men with slings surrounded the city and attacked it.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too fierce for him, he took seven hundred swordsmen with him to try to break through to the king of Edom,(AC) but they could not do it. 27 So he took his firstborn son,(AD) who was to become king in his place, and offered him as a burnt offering on the city wall. Great wrath was on the Israelites, and they withdrew from him and returned to their land.
