Rebelión y derrota de Moab
3 Joram, hijo de Acab, comenzó a reinar sobre Israel en Samaria en el año dieciocho de Josafat, rey de Judá(A); y reinó doce años. 2 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos del Señor, aunque no como su padre y su madre, pues quitó el pilar sagrado de Baal(B) que su padre había hecho(C). 3 Sin embargo, se aferró a los pecados de Jeroboam(D), hijo de Nabat, con los que hizo pecar a Israel(E), y no se apartó de ellos.
4 Y Mesa, rey de Moab, era criador de ovejas, y pagaba al rey de Israel cien mil corderos(F) y la lana de cien mil carneros. 5 Pero sucedió que cuando Acab murió, el rey de Moab se rebeló contra el rey de Israel(G). 6 Y aquel mismo día el rey Joram salió de Samaria y alistó a todo Israel. 7 Entonces fue y envió palabra a Josafat, rey de Judá, diciendo: El rey de Moab se ha rebelado contra mí. ¿Irás conmigo a pelear contra Moab? Y él respondió: Subiré; yo soy como tú, mi pueblo como tu pueblo, mis caballos como tus caballos(H). 8 Y dijo: ¿Por qué camino subiremos? Y él respondió: Por el camino del desierto de Edom. 9 Fue el rey de Israel(I) con el rey de Judá(J) y el rey de Edom(K); y dando un rodeo anduvieron siete días de camino; y no había agua para el ejército ni para los animales que los seguían. 10 Entonces el rey de Israel dijo: ¡Ah! Porque el Señor ha llamado a estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de Moab. 11 Pero Josafat dijo: ¿No hay aquí un profeta del Señor para que consultemos al Señor por medio de él(L)? Y uno de los siervos del rey de Israel respondió, y dijo: Aquí está Eliseo, hijo de Safat(M), el que vertía agua en las manos de Elías(N). 12 Y Josafat dijo: La palabra del Señor está con él. Y el rey de Israel y Josafat y el rey de Edom descendieron a él.
13 Entonces Eliseo dijo al rey de Israel: ¿Qué tengo que ver contigo? Ve a los profetas de tu padre y a los profetas de tu madre(O). Y el rey de Israel le dijo: No, porque el Señor ha llamado a estos tres reyes para entregarlos en mano de Moab. 14 Y Eliseo dijo: Vive el Señor de los ejércitos, ante quien estoy(P), que si no fuera por respeto a la presencia de Josafat, rey de Judá, no te miraría ni te vería. 15 Mas traedme ahora un tañedor(Q). Y sucedió que mientras el tañedor tocaba, la mano del Señor vino sobre Eliseo[a](R). 16 Y él dijo: Así dice el Señor: «Haced en este valle muchas zanjas». 17 Pues así dice el Señor: «No veréis viento, ni veréis lluvias; sin embargo ese valle se llenará de agua(S), y beberéis vosotros y vuestros ganados y vuestras bestias». 18 Aun esto es poco ante los ojos del Señor(T); también entregará en vuestras manos a los moabitas. 19 Y destruiréis[b] toda ciudad fortificada y toda ciudad principal, y talaréis todo árbol bueno, cegaréis todas las fuentes de agua y dañaréis con piedras todo terreno fértil(U). 20 Y aconteció que por la mañana, a la hora de ofrecer el sacrificio(V), he aquí, el agua vino por el camino de Edom, y la tierra se llenó de agua.
21 Y todos los moabitas oyeron que los reyes habían subido a pelear contra ellos. Y convocaron a todos, desde los que podían ceñir armadura[c] para arriba, y se pusieron en la frontera. 22 Se levantaron muy de mañana, y cuando el sol brilló sobre el agua, los moabitas vieron el agua frente a ellos tan roja como la sangre. 23 Entonces dijeron: Esto es sangre; sin duda los reyes han peleado entre sí, y se han matado unos a otros. Ahora pues, ¡Moab, al despojo! 24 Pero cuando llegaron al campamento de Israel, los israelitas se levantaron e hirieron a los moabitas, y estos huyeron delante de ellos; y los israelitas se adentraron en el país[d] matando[e] a los moabitas. 25 Destruyeron las ciudades, y cada uno arrojó su piedra en toda parcela de tierra buena, y las llenaron. Cegaron todas las fuentes de agua y talaron todos los árboles buenos(W), hasta dejar en Kir-hareset(X) solo sus piedras; no obstante, los honderos la rodearon y la destruyeron[f]. 26 Al ver el rey de Moab que la batalla arreciaba contra él, tomó consigo setecientos hombres que sacaban espada, para abrir brecha hacia el rey de Edom, mas no pudieron. 27 Entonces tomó a su hijo primogénito que había de reinar en su lugar, y lo ofreció en holocausto sobre la muralla. Y hubo gran ira contra los israelitas, quienes se apartaron de allí[g](Y) y regresaron a su tierra.

Eliseo predice la victoria sobre Moab
4 Entonces Mesa rey de Moab era propietario de ganados, y pagaba al rey de Israel cien mil corderos y cien mil carneros con sus vellones. 5 Pero muerto Acab, el rey de Moab se rebeló contra el rey de Israel. 6 Salió entonces de Samaria el rey Joram, y pasó revista a todo Israel. 7 Y fue y envió a decir a Josafat rey de Judá: El rey de Moab se ha rebelado contra mí: ¿irás tú conmigo a la guerra contra Moab? Y él respondió: Iré, porque yo soy como tú; mi pueblo como tu pueblo, y mis caballos como los tuyos. 8 Y dijo: ¿Por qué camino iremos? Y él respondió: Por el camino del desierto de Edom.
9 Salieron, pues, el rey de Israel, el rey de Judá, y el rey de Edom; y como anduvieron rodeando por el desierto siete días de camino, les faltó agua para el ejército, y para las bestias que los seguían. 10 Entonces el rey de Israel dijo: ¡Ah! que ha llamado Jehová a estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de los moabitas. 11 Mas Josafat dijo: ¿No hay aquí profeta de Jehová, para que consultemos a Jehová por medio de él? Y uno de los siervos del rey de Israel respondió y dijo: Aquí está Eliseo hijo de Safat, que servía a Elías. 12 Y Josafat dijo: Este tendrá palabra de Jehová. Y descendieron a él el rey de Israel, y Josafat, y el rey de Edom.
13 Entonces Eliseo dijo al rey de Israel: ¿Qué tengo yo contigo? Ve a los profetas de tu padre, y a los profetas de tu madre. Y el rey de Israel le respondió: No; porque Jehová ha reunido a estos tres reyes para entregarlos en manos de los moabitas. 14 Y Eliseo dijo: Vive Jehová de los ejércitos, en cuya presencia estoy, que si no tuviese respeto al rostro de Josafat rey de Judá, no te mirara a ti, ni te viera. 15 Mas ahora traedme un tañedor. Y mientras el tañedor tocaba, la mano de Jehová vino sobre Eliseo, 16 quien dijo: Así ha dicho Jehová: Haced en este valle muchos estanques. 17 Porque Jehová ha dicho así: No veréis viento, ni veréis lluvia; pero este valle será lleno de agua, y beberéis vosotros, y vuestras bestias y vuestros ganados. 18 Y esto es cosa ligera en los ojos de Jehová; entregará también a los moabitas en vuestras manos. 19 Y destruiréis toda ciudad fortificada y toda villa hermosa, y talaréis todo buen árbol, cegaréis todas las fuentes de aguas, y destruiréis con piedras toda tierra fértil. 20 Aconteció, pues, que por la mañana, cuando se ofrece el sacrificio, he aquí vinieron aguas por el camino de Edom, y la tierra se llenó de aguas.
21 Cuando todos los de Moab oyeron que los reyes subían a pelear contra ellos, se juntaron desde los que apenas podían ceñir armadura en adelante, y se pusieron en la frontera. 22 Cuando se levantaron por la mañana, y brilló el sol sobre las aguas, vieron los de Moab desde lejos las aguas rojas como sangre; 23 y dijeron: ¡Esto es sangre de espada! Los reyes se han vuelto uno contra otro, y cada uno ha dado muerte a su compañero. Ahora, pues, ¡Moab, al botín! 24 Pero cuando llegaron al campamento de Israel, se levantaron los israelitas y atacaron a los de Moab, los cuales huyeron de delante de ellos; pero los persiguieron matando a los de Moab. 25 Y asolaron las ciudades, y en todas las tierras fértiles echó cada uno su piedra, y las llenaron; cegaron también todas las fuentes de las aguas, y derribaron todos los buenos árboles; hasta que en Kir-hareset solamente dejaron piedras, porque los honderos la rodearon y la destruyeron. 26 Y cuando el rey de Moab vio que era vencido en la batalla, tomó consigo setecientos hombres que manejaban espada, para atacar al rey de Edom; mas no pudieron. 27 Entonces arrebató a su primogénito que había de reinar en su lugar, y lo sacrificó en holocausto sobre el muro. Y hubo grande enojo contra Israel; y se apartaron de él, y se volvieron a su tierra.

Moab Rebels Against Israel
3 (A)In the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Ahab became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, though not like his father and mother, for he put away the (B)pillar of Baal (C)that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless, he clung to (D)the sin of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, (E)which he made Israel to sin; he did not depart from it.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder, (F)and he had to deliver to the king of Israel 100,000 lambs and the wool of 100,000 rams. 5 But (G)when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 So King Jehoram marched out of Samaria at that time and mustered all Israel. 7 And he went and sent word to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to battle against Moab?” And he said, “I will go. (H)I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” 8 Then he said, “By which way shall we march?” Jehoram answered, “By the way of the wilderness of Edom.”
9 So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and (I)the king of Edom. And when they had made a circuitous march of seven days, there was no water for the army or for the animals that followed them. 10 Then the king of Israel said, “Alas! (J)The Lord has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.” 11 (K)And Jehoshaphat said, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire of the Lord?” Then one of the king of Israel's servants answered, (L)“Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, (M)who poured water on the hands of Elijah.” 12 And Jehoshaphat said, “The word of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 And Elisha said to the king of Israel, (N)“What have I to do with you? Go to (O)the prophets of your father and to (P)the prophets of your mother.” But the king of Israel said to him, “No; it is (Q)the Lord who has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.” 14 And Elisha said, (R)“As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, were it not that I have regard for Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would neither look at you nor see you. 15 But now (S)bring me a musician.” And when the musician played, (T)the hand of the Lord came upon him. 16 And he said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘I will make this dry streambed full of pools.’ 17 For thus says the Lord, ‘You shall not see wind or rain, but that streambed shall be filled with water, so that you shall drink, you, your livestock, and your animals.’ 18 This is a light thing in the sight of the Lord. He will also give the Moabites into your hand, 19 and you shall attack every fortified city and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree and stop up all springs of water (U)and ruin every good piece of land with stones.” 20 The next morning, about the time of (V)offering the sacrifice, behold, water came from the direction of Edom, till the country was filled with water.
21 When all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, all who were able to put on armor, from the youngest to the oldest, were called out and were drawn up at the border. 22 And when they rose early in the morning and the sun shone on the water, the Moabites saw the water opposite them as red as blood. 23 And they said, “This is blood; the kings have surely fought together and struck one another down. Now then, Moab, to the spoil!” 24 But when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose and struck the Moabites, till they fled before them. And they went forward, striking the Moabites as they went.[a] 25 And they overthrew the cities, and (W)on every good piece of land every man threw a stone until it was covered. They stopped every spring of water and felled all the good trees, till only its stones were left in (X)Kir-hareseth, and the slingers surrounded and attacked it. 26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle was going against him, he took with him 700 (Y)swordsmen to break through, opposite the king of Edom, but they could not. 27 Then he took his oldest son who was to reign in his place (Z)and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. And there came great wrath against Israel. And they withdrew from him and returned to their own land.
