Ezequías, rey de Judá
18 Ezequías hijo de Acaz comenzó a reinar en Judá cuando Oseas hijo de Elá llevaba tres años reinando en Israel. 2 Ezequías tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén veintinueve años. Su madre era Abí, hija de Zacarías. 3 Fue un buen rey, pues hizo lo que le agrada al Señor, siguiendo, así, el ejemplo de su antepasado David. 4 Hizo quitar los santuarios de las colinas, derribó sus altares y destruyó los vergonzosos ídolos de la diosa Aserá. También destruyó la serpiente de bronce que Moisés había hecho, porque el pueblo de Israel había comenzado a adorarla y a quemarle incienso, y la llamaban Nejustán.
5 Ezequías confió firmemente en el Señor, Dios de Israel. Ninguno de los reyes, ni antes ni después de él, estuvo tan cerca de Dios como él lo estuvo. 6 Porque siguió al Señor en todo y obedeció cuidadosamente todos los mandamientos que él había dado por medio de Moisés. 7 Por esta razón el Señor estuvo con él y lo hizo prosperar en todo lo que emprendió. Se rebeló contra el rey de Asiria y se negó a seguir pagando tributos. 8 También venció a los filisteos, tanto en las ciudades grandes como en las pequeñas, y logró llegar hasta Gaza y sus alrededores.
9 En el cuarto año de su reinado, que era el séptimo año de Oseas en Israel, el rey Salmanasar, de Asiria, atacó a Israel y comenzó el sitio de la ciudad de Samaria. 10 Tres años más tarde (durante el sexto año del reinado de Ezequías y el noveno del reinado de Oseas en Israel) cayó Samaria. 11 Fue en aquel tiempo cuando el rey de Asiria transportó a los israelitas a Asiria y los puso en colonias en las ciudades de Jalaj, en Gozán, que está junto al río Jabor, y en las ciudades de los medos. 12 Esto fue porque se habían negado a obedecer al Señor su Dios y a hacer su voluntad. Al contrario, habían pasado por alto su pacto y habían desobedecido todas las leyes que les había dado por medio de Moisés, su siervo.
13 Más tarde, en el año catorce del reinado de Ezequías, el rey Senaquerib de Asiria, sitió y capturó todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá. 14 El rey Ezequías quería la paz, y envió este mensaje al rey de Asiria, que estaba en Laquis: «He hecho mal. Pagaré cualquier tributo que me pidas, con tal de que te vayas». El rey de Asiria le exigió nueve mil novecientos kilos de plata y novecientos noventa kilos de oro. 15 Para reunir esta suma, el rey Ezequías tomó toda la plata que había en el templo del Señor y en la tesorería de la casa de rey. 16 Además, tuvo que quitar el oro de las puertas del templo del Señor y de los postes con que él mismo los había recubierto, y lo dio todo al rey de Asiria.
Senaquerib amenaza a Jerusalén
17 Sin embargo, el rey de Asiria envió desde Laquis a uno de sus altos oficiales el Tartán, a su tesorero principal el Rabasaris, y al copero mayor el Rabsaces, para que fueran a atacar a Jerusalén. Estos subieron y acamparon en el canal del estanque superior, que está junto al campo donde era blanqueada la ropa. 18 Entonces le pidieron al rey Ezequías que saliera a hablar con ellos. Pero él envió una delegación para pedir tregua. La delegación estaba formada por los siguientes hombres: Eliaquín, el mayordomo del palacio, Sebna, su secretario, y Joa hijo de Asaf, su otro secretario.
19 Entonces el Rabsaces envió este mensaje al rey Ezequías:
―El gran rey de Asiria dice: “¿Qué te hace sentir tan seguro? 20-21 Necesitas más que promesas y ayudas antes de rebelarte contra mí. Pero, ¿cuál de tus aliados te dará más que palabras? ¿Egipto? Si te apoyas en Egipto, descubrirás que es una caña que se quiebra bajo tu peso y te traspasa la mano. El faraón de Egipto es completamente indigno de confianza. 22 Y si dices: ‘Estamos confiando en que el Señor nos librará’, recuerda que tú has destruido los altares de las colinas dedicados a él. Porque tú exiges que toda la gente vaya a adorar ante el altar de Jerusalén”.
23 »¿Qué te parece? Haz una apuesta con mi amo, el rey de Asiria. Si encuentras dos mil hombres que puedan montar a caballo, nosotros te daremos los caballos. 24 Y con un ejército tan pequeño como el tuyo, no eres amenaza ni para el menor de los oficiales a cargo del más pequeño contingente. Si los egipcios estuvieran dispuestos a proporcionarte caballos y carros, de nada te serviría. 25 ¿Piensas que nosotros hemos venido aquí por nuestra propia iniciativa? ¡No! El Señor nos ha enviado, y nos dijo: “Vayan y destruyan a ese pueblo”.
26 Eliaquín hijo de Jilquías, Sebna y Joa le dijeron:
―Habla en arameo, por favor, porque nosotros lo entendemos. No uses hebreo porque el pueblo que está en los muros nos está oyendo.
27 Pero el asirio respondió:
―¿Me ha enviado acaso mi señor a hablarte solamente a ti y a tu amo? ¡Me ha enviado a hablarle también al pueblo que está en los muros, condenados al igual que ustedes a comer sus excrementos y a beber su orina!
28 Entonces el Rabsaces asirio gritó en hebreo al pueblo que estaba sobre los muros:
―¡Oigan lo que dice el gran rey de Asiria! 29 ¡No permitan que el rey Ezequías los engañe! ¡Él jamás podrá salvarlos de mi poder! 30 ¡No permitan que los engañe haciéndoles creer que el Señor los salvará!
31-32 »¡No escuchen al rey Ezequías! ¡Ríndanse! ¡Podrán vivir aquí en su tierra hasta que yo los conduzca a otra tierra semejante a esta, con muchas cosechas, grano, vino, olivos y miel! Todo esto es mejor que la muerte. No escuchen al rey Ezequías cuando trate de convencerlos de que el Señor los salvará.
33 »¿Ha podido alguno de los dioses de las otras naciones librarlos del rey de Asiria? 34 ¿Qué le ha pasado a los dioses de Jamat, Arfad, Sefarvayin, Hená e Ivá? ¿Rescataron a Samaria? 35 Si no hay dios que haya podido salvar a nación alguna de mi poder, ¿qué los hace pensar que el Señor puede salvar a Jerusalén?
36 Pero el pueblo sobre el muro permaneció en silencio, porque el rey les había ordenado no responder.
37 Entonces Eliaquín hijo de Jilquías, el mayordomo, Sebna, el secretario del rey, y Joa hijo de Asaf, el otro secretario, fueron ante el rey Ezequías con su ropa rasgada y le contaron lo que había dicho el Rabsaces asirio.

2 May dalawangpu't limang taon siya nang magpasimulang maghari; at siya'y nagharing dalawangpu't siyam na taon sa Jerusalem: at ang pangalan ng kaniyang ina ay (C)Abi na anak ni Zacharias.
3 At siya'y gumawa ng matuwid sa harap ng mga mata ng Panginoon, ayon sa lahat na ginawa ni David na kaniyang magulang.
4 (D)Kaniyang inalis ang mga mataas na dako, at sinira ang mga (E)haligi, at ibinagsak ang mga (F)Asera: at kaniyang pinagputolputol ang ahas na tanso (G)na ginawa ni Moises; sapagka't hanggang sa mga araw na yaon ay pinagsusunugan ng kamangyan ng mga anak ni Israel; at pinanganlang Nehustan.[a]
5 Siya'y (H)tumiwala sa Panginoon, na Dios ng Israel; na anopa't nang mamatay siya ay walang naging gaya niya sa lahat ng hari sa Juda, o sa nangauna man sa kaniya.
6 Sapagka't siya'y (I)lumakip sa Panginoon; siya'y hindi humiwalay ng pagsunod sa kaniya, kundi iningatan ang kaniyang mga utos na iniutos ng Panginoon kay Moises.
7 At ang Panginoon ay sumasa kaniya; saan man siya lumabas ay gumiginhawa siya; at siya'y (J)nanghimagsik laban sa hari sa Asiria, at hindi niya pinaglingkuran.
8 (K)Kaniyang sinaktan ang mga Filisteo hanggang sa (L)Gaza, at ang mga hangganan niyaon, mula sa (M)moog ng bantay hanggang sa bayang nakukutaan.
9 At nangyari, nang ikaapat na taon ng haring Ezechias, na siyang ikapitong taon ni Oseas na anak ni Ela na hari sa Israel, na si (N)Salmanasar na hari sa Asiria ay umahon laban sa Samaria, at kinubkob niya.
10 At sa katapusan ng tatlong taon ay kanilang sinakop: sa makatuwid baga'y nang ikaanim na taon ni Ezechias, na siyang ikasiyam na taon ni Oseas na hari sa Israel, ang Samaria ay sinakop.
11 At dinala ng hari sa Asiria ang Israel sa Asiria, at inilagay sa Hala, at sa Habor, sa ilog ng Gozan, at sa mga bayan ng mga Medo:
12 Sapagka't hindi nila sinunod ang tinig ng Panginoon nilang Dios, kundi kanilang sinalangsang ang kaniyang tipan, ang lahat na iniutos ni Moises na lingkod ng Panginoon, at hindi dininig o ginawa man.
Si Sennacherib ay sumalakay sa Juda.
13 Nang (O)ikalabing apat na taon nga ng haring Ezechias ay umahon si Sennacherib na hari sa Asiria laban sa lahat na bayang nakukutaan ng Juda, at pinagsakop.
14 At si Ezechias na hari sa Juda ay nagsugo sa hari sa Asiria sa (P)Lachis, na nagsasabi, Ako'y nagkasala; talikdan mo ako: ang iyong ipabayad sa akin ay aking babayaran. At siningil ng hari sa Asiria si Ezechias na hari sa Juda ng (Q)tatlong daang talentong pilak at tatlong pung talentong ginto.
15 At ibinigay ni Ezechias ang (R)lahat na pilak na nasumpungan sa bahay ng Panginoon, at sa mga kayamanan ng bahay ng hari.
16 Nang panahong yaon ay inihiwalay ni Ezechias ang ginto sa mga pintuan ng templo ng Panginoon, at sa mga haligi na binalutan ni Ezechias na hari sa Juda, at ibinigay sa hari sa Asiria.
17 (S)At sinugo ng hari sa Asiria si (T)Thartan at si Rab-saris, at si Rabsaces, sa haring kay Ezechias na mula sa Lachis na may malaking hukbo sa Jerusalem. At sila'y nagsiahon at nagsiparoon sa Jerusalem. At nang sila'y mangakaahon, sila'y nagsiparoon at nagsitayo sa tabi ng padaluyan ng tubig ng mataas na tipunan ng tubig (U)na nasa lansangan sa parang ng tagapagpaputi ng kayo.
18 At nang matawag na nila ang hari, ay nilabas sila ni (V)Eliacim na anak ni Hilcias, na siyang katiwala ng bahay, at ni Sebna na (W)kalihim, at ni Joah na anak ni Asaph na (X)kasangguni.
Ang mainit na talumpati ni Rabsaces.
19 At sinabi ni Rabsaces sa kanila, Sabihin ninyo ngayon kay Ezechias, Ganito ang sabi ng dakilang hari, ng hari sa Asiria, Anong pagasa ito sa iyong tinitiwalaan?
20 Iyong sinasabi (nguni't mga salitang walang kabuluhan lamang) May payo at kalakasan sa pakikipagdigma. Ngayon, kanino ka tumitiwala, na ikaw ay nanghimagsik laban sa akin?
21 Ngayon, narito, ikaw ay tumitiwala sa (Y)tungkod na ito na kahoy na lapok, sa makatuwid baga'y sa Egipto; na kung sinoman ay sumandal, ay tutuhog sa kaniyang kamay, at palalagpasan: gayon si Faraon na hari sa Egipto sa lahat na tumitiwala sa kaniya.
22 Nguni't kung inyong sabihin sa akin: Kami ay tumitiwala sa Panginoon naming Dios: hindi ba siya'y yaong inalisan ni Ezechias ng mga (Z)mataas na dako, at ng mga dambana, at nagsabi sa Juda at sa Jerusalem, Kayo'y magsisisamba sa harap ng dambanang ito sa Jerusalem?
23 Isinasamo ko nga ngayon sa iyo na magbigay ka ng mga (AA)sangla sa aking panginoon na hari sa Asiria, at bibigyan kita ng dalawang libong kabayo, kung ikaw ay makapaglalagay sa ganang iyo ng mga mangangabayo sa mga yaon.
24 Paano ngang iyong mapapipihit ang mukha ng isang punong kawal sa pinaka mababa sa mga lingkod ng aking panginoon, at iyong ilalagak ang iyong tiwala sa Egipto dahil sa mga karo at sa mga mangangabayo?
25 Ako ba'y umahon na di ko kasama ang Panginoon laban sa dakong ito upang lipulin? Sinabi ng Panginoon sa akin, Ikaw ay umahon laban sa lupaing ito, at iyong lipulin.
26 Nang magkagayo'y sinabi ni Eliacim na anak ni Hilcias, at si Sebna, at ni Joah, kay Rabsaces. Isinasamo ko sa iyo na magsalita ka sa iyong mga lingkod (AB)ng wikang Siria; sapagka't aming naiintindihan yaon; at huwag kang magsalita sa amin ng wikang Judio, sa mga pakinig ng bayan na nasa kuta.
27 Nguni't sinabi ni Rabsaces sa kanila, Sinugo ba ako ng aking panginoon sa iyong panginoon, at sa iyo, upang salitain ang mga salitang ito? di ba niya ako sinugo sa mga lalake na nangakaupo sa kuta, upang magsikain ng kanilang sariling dumi, at upang magsiinom ng kanilang sariling ihi na kasalo ninyo?
28 Nang magkagayo'y si Rabsaces ay tumayo at sumigaw ng malakas sa wikang Judio, at nagsalita, na sinasabi, Dinggin ninyo ang salita ng dakilang hari, ng hari sa Asiria.
29 Ganito ang sabi ng hari, Huwag kayong dayain ni Ezechias; sapagka't hindi niya kayo maililigtas sa kaniyang kamay.
30 Ni patiwalain man kayo ni Ezechias sa Panginoon, na sabihin, Walang pagsalang ililigtas tayo ng Panginoon, at ang bayang ito ay hindi mabibigay sa kamay ng hari sa Asiria.
31 Huwag ninyong dinggin si Ezechias: sapagka't ganito ang sabi ng hari sa Asiria, Makipagpayapaan kayo sa akin, at labasin ninyo ako; at kumain ang bawa't isa sa inyo ng bunga (AC)ng kaniyang puno ng ubas, at ang bawa't isa ng bunga ng kaniyang puno ng igos, at uminom ang bawa't isa sa inyo ng tubig ng kaniyang sariling balon;
32 Hanggang sa ako'y dumating at dalhin ko kayo sa isang lupaing gaya ng inyong sariling lupain, na lupain ng trigo at ng alak, na (AD)lupain ng tinapay at ng mga ubasan, na lupain ng langis na olibo at ng pulot, upang kayo'y mangabuhay, at huwag mangamatay: at huwag ninyong dinggin si Ezechias, pagka kayo'y hinihikayat niya, na sinasabi, Ililigtas tayo ng Panginoon.
33 (AE)Nagligtas ba kailan man ang sinoman sa mga dios sa mga bansa ng kaniyang lupain sa kamay ng hari sa Asiria?
34 Saan nandoon ang mga dios ng (AF)Hamath, at ng (AG)Arphad? Saan nandoon ang mga dios ng Sepharvaim, ng Hena, at ng Hiva? Iniligtas ba nila ang Samaria sa aking kamay?
35 Sino sa kanila sa lahat na dios ng mga lupain, ang nagligtas ng kanilang lupain sa aking kamay, na ililigtas ng Panginoon ang Jerusalem sa aking kamay?
36 Nguni't ang bayan ay tumahimik, at hindi sumagot ng kahit isang salita: sapagka't utos ng hari, na sinasabi, Huwag ninyong sagutin siya.

Hezekiah King of Judah(A)(B)(C)
18 In the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah(D) son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years.(E) His mother’s name was Abijah[a] daughter of Zechariah. 3 He did what was right(F) in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David(G) had done. 4 He removed(H) the high places,(I) smashed the sacred stones(J) and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake(K) Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it. (It was called Nehushtan.[b])
5 Hezekiah trusted(L) in the Lord, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him. 6 He held fast(M) to the Lord and did not stop following him; he kept the commands the Lord had given Moses. 7 And the Lord was with him; he was successful(N) in whatever he undertook. He rebelled(O) against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. 8 From watchtower to fortified city,(P) he defeated the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory.
9 In King Hezekiah’s fourth year,(Q) which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria marched against Samaria and laid siege to it. 10 At the end of three years the Assyrians took it. So Samaria was captured in Hezekiah’s sixth year, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel. 11 The king(R) of Assyria deported Israel to Assyria and settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in towns of the Medes.(S) 12 This happened because they had not obeyed the Lord their God, but had violated his covenant(T)—all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded.(U) They neither listened to the commands(V) nor carried them out.
13 In the fourteenth year(W) of King Hezekiah’s reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah(X) and captured them. 14 So Hezekiah king of Judah sent this message to the king of Assyria at Lachish:(Y) “I have done wrong.(Z) Withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand of me.” The king of Assyria exacted from Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents[c] of silver and thirty talents[d] of gold. 15 So Hezekiah gave(AA) him all the silver that was found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasuries of the royal palace.
16 At this time Hezekiah king of Judah stripped off the gold with which he had covered the doors(AB) and doorposts of the temple of the Lord, and gave it to the king of Assyria.
Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem(AC)(AD)
17 The king of Assyria sent his supreme commander,(AE) his chief officer and his field commander with a large army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They came up to Jerusalem and stopped at the aqueduct of the Upper Pool,(AF) on the road to the Washerman’s Field. 18 They called for the king; and Eliakim(AG) son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna(AH) the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went out to them.
19 The field commander said to them, “Tell Hezekiah:
“‘This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: On what are you basing this confidence(AI) of yours? 20 You say you have the counsel and the might for war—but you speak only empty words. On whom are you depending, that you rebel against me? 21 Look, I know you are depending on Egypt,(AJ) that splintered reed of a staff,(AK) which pierces the hand of anyone who leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him. 22 But if you say to me, “We are depending on the Lord our God”—isn’t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem”?
23 “‘Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them! 24 How can you repulse one officer(AL) of the least of my master’s officials, even though you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen[e]? 25 Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the Lord?(AM) The Lord himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.’”
26 Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, and Shebna and Joah said to the field commander, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic,(AN) since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall.”
27 But the commander replied, “Was it only to your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the people sitting on the wall—who, like you, will have to eat their own excrement and drink their own urine?”
28 Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! 29 This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive(AO) you. He cannot deliver you from my hand. 30 Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, ‘The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
31 “Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then each of you will eat fruit from your own vine and fig tree(AP) and drink water from your own cistern,(AQ) 32 until I come and take you to a land like your own—a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey. Choose life(AR) and not death!
“Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, ‘The Lord will deliver us.’ 33 Has the god(AS) of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 34 Where are the gods of Hamath(AT) and Arpad?(AU) Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand? 35 Who of all the gods of these countries has been able to save his land from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”(AV)
36 But the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
37 Then Eliakim(AW) son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went to Hezekiah, with their clothes torn,(AX) and told him what the field commander had said.

5 He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
6 For he clave to the Lord, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses.
7 And the Lord was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.
8 He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
9 And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.
10 And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is in the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.
11 And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:
12 Because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.
13 Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.
14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
15 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king's house.
16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the Lord, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.
17 And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller's field.
18 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.
19 And Rabshakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
20 Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
21 Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.
22 But if ye say unto me, We trust in the Lord our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
23 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
24 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
25 Am I now come up without the Lord against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
26 Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews' language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
27 But Rabshakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
28 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:
29 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:
30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
31 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:
32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The Lord will deliver us.
33 Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
34 Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?
35 Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?
36 But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
37 Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

Hezekiah Reigns in Judah(A)
18 Now it came to pass in the third year of (B)Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that (C)Hezekiah the son of Ahaz, king of Judah, began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was (D)Abi[a] the daughter of Zechariah. 3 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father David had done.
4 (E)He removed the [b]high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the [c]wooden image and broke in pieces the (F)bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it [d]Nehushtan. 5 He (G)trusted in the Lord God of Israel, (H)so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor who were before him. 6 For he (I)held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses. 7 The Lord (J)was with him; he (K)prospered wherever he went. And he (L)rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. 8 (M)He [e]subdued the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory, (N)from watchtower to fortified city.
9 Now (O)it came to pass in the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea the son of Elah, king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it. 10 And at the end of three years they took it. In the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is, (P)the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11 (Q)Then the king of Assyria carried Israel away captive to Assyria, and put them (R)in Halah and by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, 12 because they (S)did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed His covenant and all that Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded; and they would neither hear nor do them.
13 And (T)in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. 14 Then Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, “I have done wrong; turn away from me; whatever you impose on me I will pay.” And the king of Assyria assessed Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 15 So Hezekiah (U)gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king’s house. 16 At that time Hezekiah stripped the gold from the doors of the temple of the Lord, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave [f]it to the king of Assyria.
Sennacherib Boasts Against the Lord(V)
17 Then the king of Assyria sent the [g]Tartan, the [h]Rabsaris, and the [i]Rabshakeh from Lachish, with a great army against Jerusalem, to King Hezekiah. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. When they had come up, they went and stood by the (W)aqueduct from the upper pool, (X)which was on the highway to the Fuller’s Field. 18 And when they had called to the king, (Y)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the [j]scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came out to them. 19 Then the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: (Z)“What confidence is this in which you trust? 20 You speak of having plans and power for war; but they are [k]mere words. And in whom do you trust, that you rebel against me? 21 (AA)Now look! You are trusting in the staff of this broken reed, Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. 22 But if you say to me, ‘We trust in the Lord our God,’ is it not He (AB)whose [l]high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem’?” ’ 23 Now therefore, I urge you, give a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses—if you are able on your part to put riders on them! 24 How then will you repel one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen? 25 Have I now come up without the Lord against this place to destroy it? 26 (AC)Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in (AD)Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in [m]Hebrew in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
27 But the Rabshakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat and drink their own waste with you?”
28 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out with a loud voice in [n]Hebrew, and spoke, saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! 29 Thus says the king: (AE)‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you from his hand; 30 nor let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us; this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” ’ 31 Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: ‘Make peace with me [o]by a present and come out to me; and every one of you eat from his own (AF)vine and every one from his own fig tree, and every one of you drink the waters of his own cistern; 32 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, (AG)a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive groves and honey, that you may live and not die. But do not listen to Hezekiah, lest he persuade you, saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” 33 (AH)Has any of the gods of the nations at all delivered its land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 34 Where are the gods of (AI)Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim and Hena and (AJ)Ivah? Indeed, have they delivered Samaria from my hand? 35 Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their countries from my hand, (AK)that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’ ”
