Amasías, rey de Judá(A)(B)

14 En el segundo año de Joás, hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel, Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar. 2 Tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar; reinó en Jerusalén veintinueve años. Su madre era Joadán, oriunda de Jerusalén. 3 Amasías hizo lo que agrada al Señor, aunque no como lo había hecho su antepasado David. En todo siguió el ejemplo de su padre Joás. 4 Sin embargo, no se quitaron los altares paganos, sino que el pueblo siguió ofreciendo sacrificios y quemando incienso en ellos.

5 Después de afianzarse en el poder, Amasías mató a los ministros que habían asesinado a su padre el rey. 6 Sin embargo, según lo que ordenó el Señor, no mató a los hijos de los asesinos, pues está escrito en el libro de la Ley de Moisés: «No se dará muerte a los padres por la culpa de sus hijos ni se dará muerte a los hijos por la culpa de sus padres. Cada uno morirá por su propio pecado».[a]

7 Amasías derrotó a diez mil edomitas en el valle de la Sal; también conquistó la ciudad de Selá y le puso por nombre Joctel, que es como se conoce hasta el día de hoy.

8 Por aquel tiempo, Amasías envió mensajeros a Joás, hijo de Joacaz y nieto de Jehú, rey de Israel, con este reto: «¡Ven acá, para que nos enfrentemos!».

9 Pero Joás, rey de Israel, respondió a Amasías, rey de Judá: «El cardo del Líbano mandó este mensaje al cedro: “¡Entrega a tu hija como esposa a mi hijo!”. Pero luego pasaron por allí las fieras del Líbano y aplastaron el cardo. 10 De hecho, has derrotado a los edomitas y actúas con arrogancia. Está bien, jáctate si quieres, pero quédate en casa. ¿Para qué provocas una desgracia que significará tu perdición y la de Judá?».

11 Amasías no le hizo caso. Así que Joás, rey de Israel, marchó a Bet Semes, que está en Judá, para enfrentarse con él. 12 Los israelitas vencieron a los de Judá, y estos huyeron a sus casas. 13 En Bet Semes, Joás, rey de Israel, capturó a Amasías, rey de Judá, hijo de Joás y nieto de Ocozías. Luego fue a Jerusalén y derribó cuatrocientos codos[b] de la muralla, desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta de la Esquina. 14 Además, se apoderó de todo el oro, la plata y los utensilios que estaban en el Templo del Señor y en los tesoros del palacio real. 21 Entonces todo el pueblo de Judá tomó a Azarías,[c] que tenía dieciséis años, y lo proclamó rey en lugar de su padre Amasías. 22 Y fue Uzías quien, después de la muerte del rey Amasías, reconstruyó la ciudad de Elat y la reincorporó a Judá.

Jeroboán II, rey de Israel

23 En el año quince del reinado de Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, Jeroboán, hijo de Joás, rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar; reinó en Samaria cuarenta y un años. 24 Jeroboán hizo lo malo ante los ojos del Señor, pues no se apartó de ninguno de los pecados con que Jeroboán, hijo de Nabat, hizo pecar a Israel. 25 Él fue quien restableció las fronteras de Israel desde Lebó Jamat[d] hasta el mar del Arabá, según la palabra que el Señor, Dios de Israel, había dado a conocer por medio de su siervo Jonás, hijo de Amitay, el profeta de Gat Jefer.

26 Porque el Señor había visto que todos los habitantes de Israel, esclavos o libres, sufrían amargamente y no había nadie que los ayudara. 27 Pero el Señor los salvó por medio de Jeroboán, hijo de Joás, pues había dicho que no borraría de la tierra el nombre de Israel.

28 Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Jeroboán, y todo lo que hizo y su poderío, incluso sus guerras en las que recuperó para Israel a Damasco y a Jamat, que habían pertenecido a Judá, están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel. 29 Jeroboán murió y fue sepultado con sus antepasados, los reyes de Israel. Amaziah becomes the king of Judah

14 Joash's son Amaziah became the king of Judah when Jehoahaz's son Jehoash had been the king of Israel for two years. 2 Amaziah was 25 years old when he began to rule as king. He ruled in Jerusalem for 29 years. His mother's name was Jehoaddin. She was from Jerusalem. 3 Amaziah did things that the Lord said were good. He lived in the way that his father Joash had done. But he did not do as well as his ancestor King David had done. 4 He did not remove the altars on the hills. The people continued to offer sacrifices and to burn incense on those altars.

5 Amaziah made himself strong to rule his kingdom with authority. Then he killed the officers who had murdered his father, King Joash. 6 But he did not punish their sons with death. He obeyed the Lord's command that was written in the Book of the Law of Moses. The command says, ‘Do not punish fathers with death when their sons do bad things. Do not punish children with death when their fathers do bad things. Each person must die only because of his own sins.’[a]

7 Amaziah killed 10,000 soldiers from Edom in Salt valley.[b] He attacked Sela city and he took it for himself. He gave it a new name, ‘Joktheel’. That is still its name.

8 Then Amaziah sent men with a message to King Jehoash of Israel. He was the son of Jehoahaz and the grandson of Jehu. Amaziah's message said, ‘Come here and meet me.’ 9 But King Jehoash of Israel sent this message back to King Amaziah of Judah: ‘In Lebanon, a thorn bush sent this message to a cedar tree: “Please give your daughter to my son, to be his wife.” Then a wild animal of Lebanon came and knocked down the thorn bush. It walked all over it! 10 Yes! You have won the fight against Edom. But do not boast about your power! You may be very happy, but stay at home! Do not try to fight against us. If you do that, you will cause trouble that destroys both you and your kingdom, Judah.’

11 But Amaziah did not accept Jehoash's message. So King Jehoash of Israel prepared to attack Amaziah's army. Jehoash and Amaziah met together in battle at Beth Shemesh, a town in Judah. 12 Israel's army won the battle against Judah's army. All the soldiers from Judah ran back home. 13 At Beth Shemesh, King Jehoash of Israel caught the king of Judah, Amaziah, the son of Joash and the grandson of Ahaziah. Then King Jehoash went to attack Jerusalem. He destroyed the wall of Jerusalem, between the Ephraim Gate and the Corner Gate. That part of the wall was 180 metres long. 14 He took all the gold and silver and all the valuable things from the Lord's temple and the palace. He also took some of the people away with him as prisoners. Then he returned to Samaria.

King Jehoash of Israel dies

15 The other things that happened while Jehoash was king are written in a book. The book is called ‘The history of Israel's kings’. It tells about all the great things that Jehoash did. It tells about the war that he fought against King Amaziah of Judah. 16 Jehoash died and they buried him beside the other kings of Israel in Samaria. His son Jeroboam became king after him.

King Amaziah of Judah dies

17 Joash's son Amaziah, the king of Judah, lived for 15 years after Jehoahaz's son Jehoash, the king of Israel, died. 18 The other things that happened while Amaziah was king are written in a book. The book is called ‘The history of Judah's kings’. 19 Some people in Jerusalem made a plan to kill Amaziah. So he ran away to Lachish. But the people in Jerusalem sent men to catch him in Lachish. They killed Amaziah there. 20 They carried his dead body back to Jerusalem on a horse. They buried him there beside his ancestors in the City of David. 21 All the people in Judah made Amaziah's son Azariah king instead of his father. Azariah was 16 years old. 22 He was the king who built Elath into a strong city again. He put it back under Judah's power. He did that after his father Amaziah had died.

Jeroboam II becomes the king of Israel

23 Jehoash's son Jeroboam became the king of Israel when Joash's son Amaziah had been king of Judah for 15 years. Jeroboam ruled Israel for 41 years in Samaria.[c] 24 He did things that the Lord said were evil. He did not turn away from the bad things that Nebat's son Jeroboam had done. He had caused many people in Israel to do those sins.

25 Jeroboam was the king who made Israel's border strong between Lebo-Hamath and the Salt Sea.[d] The Lord, Israel's God, had already told his prophet Jonah that this would happen. Jonah was the son of Amittai and he came from Gath Hepher.

26 Everyone in Israel had a lot of trouble and pain, whoever they were. There was no leader who could rescue them. The Lord had seen this, so he helped Jeroboam. 27 The Lord had never said that he would completely remove Israel from the earth. So he gave Jehoash's son Jeroboam the power to rescue them.

28 The other things that happened while Jeroboam was king are written in a book. The book is called ‘The history of Israel's kings’. It tells about all the great things that Jeroboam did. It tells how he fought battles to get back power for Israel over Damascus and Hamath. 29 Jeroboam died and they buried him beside the other kings of Israel in Samaria. His son Zechariah became king after him.[e]

Amaziah Reigns in Judah(A)

14 In (B)the second year of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, (C)Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, became king. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 3 And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like his father David; he did everything (D)as his father Joash had done. 4 (E)However the [a]high places were not taken away, and the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

5 Now it happened, as soon as the kingdom was established in his hand, that he executed his servants (F)who had murdered his father the king. 6 But the children of the murderers he did not execute, according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, in which the Lord commanded, saying, (G)“Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; but a person shall be put to death for his own sin.”

7 (H)He killed ten thousand Edomites in (I)the Valley of Salt, and took [b]Sela by war, (J)and called its name Joktheel to this day.

8 (K)Then Amaziah sent messengers to [c]Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us face one another in battle.” 9 And Jehoash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, (L)“The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the (M)cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as wife’; and a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle. 10 You have indeed defeated Edom, and (N)your heart has [d]lifted you up. Glory in that, and stay at home; for why should you meddle with trouble so that you fall—you and Judah with you?”

11 But Amaziah would not heed. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went out; so he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another at (O)Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 12 And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his tent. 13 Then Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh; and he went to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from (P)the Gate of Ephraim to (Q)the Corner Gate—[e]four hundred cubits. 14 And he took all (R)the gold and silver, all the articles that were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king’s house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.

15 (S)Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did—his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah—are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 16 So Jehoash [f]rested with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. Then Jeroboam his son reigned in his place.

17 (T)Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel. 18 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 19 And (U)they formed a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to (V)Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20 Then they brought him on horses, and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the City of David.

21 And all the people of Judah took (W)Azariah,[g] who was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah. 22 He built (X)Elath[h] and restored it to Judah, after [i]the king rested with his fathers.

Jeroboam II Reigns in Israel

23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, became king in Samaria, and reigned forty-one years. 24 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord; he did not depart from all the (Y)sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin. 25 He (Z)restored the [j]territory of Israel (AA)from the entrance of Hamath to (AB)the[k] Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which He had spoken through His servant (AC)Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet who was from (AD)Gath Hepher. 26 For the Lord (AE)saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter; and whether bond or free, (AF)there was no helper for Israel. 27 (AG)And the Lord did not say that He would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven; but He saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.

28 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did—his might, how he made war, and how he recaptured for Israel, from (AH)Damascus and Hamath, (AI)what had belonged to Judah—are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 29 So Jeroboam [l]rested with his fathers, the kings of Israel. Then (AJ)Zechariah his son reigned in his place.

14 In the second year of Jehoash[a] son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 3 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father David had done. In everything he followed the example of his father Joash. 4 The high places,(C) however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.

5 After the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, he executed(D) the officials(E) who had murdered his father the king. 6 Yet he did not put the children of the assassins to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book of the Law(F) of Moses where the Lord commanded: “Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”[b](G)

7 He was the one who defeated ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt(H) and captured Sela(I) in battle, calling it Joktheel, the name it has to this day.

8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, with the challenge: “Come, let us face each other in battle.”

9 But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle(J) in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot. 10 You have indeed defeated Edom and now you are arrogant.(K) Glory in your victory, but stay at home! Why ask for trouble and cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?”

11 Amaziah, however, would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh(L) in Judah. 12 Judah was routed by Israel, and every man fled to his home.(M) 13 Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall(N) of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate(O) to the Corner Gate(P)—a section about four hundred cubits long.[c] 14 He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasuries of the royal palace. He also took hostages and returned to Samaria.

15 As for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, what he did and his achievements, including his war(Q) against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 16 Jehoash rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. And Jeroboam his son succeeded him as king.

17 Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 18 As for the other events of Amaziah’s reign, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?

19 They conspired(R) against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish,(S) but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20 He was brought back by horse(T) and was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors, in the City of David.

21 Then all the people of Judah took Azariah,[d](U) who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. 22 He was the one who rebuilt Elath(V) and restored it to Judah after Amaziah rested with his ancestors.

Jeroboam II King of Israel

23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam(W) son of Jehoash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. 24 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit.(X) 25 He was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel from Lebo Hamath(Y) to the Dead Sea,[e](Z) in accordance with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah(AA) son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.

26 The Lord had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free,(AB) was suffering;[f](AC) there was no one to help them.(AD) 27 And since the Lord had not said he would blot out(AE) the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved(AF) them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.

28 As for the other events of Jeroboam’s reign, all he did, and his military achievements, including how he recovered for Israel both Damascus(AG) and Hamath,(AH) which had belonged to Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals(AI) of the kings of Israel? 29 Jeroboam rested with his ancestors, the kings of Israel. And Zechariah his son succeeded him as king.
