Amasías rey de Judá

14 (A)En el año segundo de Jeoás[a], hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá(B). 2 Tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó veintinueve años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Joadán, de Jerusalén. 3 E hizo lo recto ante los ojos del Señor, pero no como su padre David; hizo conforme a todo lo que su padre Joás había hecho. 4 Solo que los lugares altos no fueron quitados; todavía el pueblo sacrificaba y quemaba incienso en los lugares altos(C). 5 Y sucedió que una vez afianzado el reino en su mano, mató[b] a los siervos suyos que habían asesinado[c] al rey su padre(D). 6 Pero a los hijos de los asesinos[d] no les dio muerte, conforme a lo que está escrito en el libro de la ley de Moisés, tal como el Señor ordenó, diciendo: No se dará muerte a los padres por los hijos, ni se dará muerte a los hijos por los padres, sino que a cada uno se le dará muerte por su propio pecado(E). 7 Él mató[e] a diez mil de Edom en el valle de Sal(F) y tomó a Sela(G) en batalla, y la llamó Jocteel(H), hasta hoy. 8 (I)Entonces Amasías envió mensajeros a Jeoás, hijo de Joacaz, hijo de Jehú, rey de Israel, diciendo: Ven, veámonos cara a cara[f](J). 9 Y Jeoás, rey de Israel, envió mensaje a Amasías, rey de Judá, diciendo: El cardo que estaba en el Líbano envió a decir[g] al cedro que estaba en el Líbano, diciendo: «Da tu hija por mujer a mi hijo». Pero pasó una fiera que estaba en el Líbano, y pisoteó el cardo(K). 10 Ciertamente has derrotado[h](L) a Edom, y tu corazón se ha envanecido[i](M). Disfruta tu gloria y quédate en tu casa; pues, ¿por qué quieres provocar el mal de modo que caigas tú y Judá contigo?

11 Pero Amasías no quiso escuchar. Y subió Jeoás, rey de Israel; y él y Amasías, rey de Judá, se enfrentaron en Bet-semes(N), que pertenece a Judá. 12 Y Judá fue derrotado por[j] Israel, y huyeron cada uno a su tienda(O). 13 Entonces Jeoás, rey de Israel, capturó a Amasías, rey de Judá, hijo de Joás[k], hijo de Ocozías, en Bet-semes; y vino a Jerusalén y derribó la muralla de Jerusalén desde la puerta de Efraín(P) hasta la puerta del Angulo(Q), cuatrocientos codos[l]. 14 Y tomó todo el oro, la plata y todos los utensilios que se encontraban en la casa del Señor y en los tesoros de la casa del rey(R), también los rehenes; y volvió a Samaria.

15 (S)Los demás hechos de Jeoás, cuanto hizo y su poder, y cómo peleó con Amasías, rey de Judá; ¿no están escritos en el libro de las Crónicas de los reyes de Israel? 16 Y durmió Jeoás con sus padres, y fue sepultado en Samaria con los reyes de Israel; y su hijo Jeroboam reinó en su lugar.

17 (T)Y Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, vivió quince años después de la muerte de Jeoás, hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel. 18 Los demás hechos de Amasías, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las Crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 19 Y conspiraron contra él en Jerusalén, y huyó a Laquis(U); pero lo persiguieron[m] hasta Laquis y allí lo mataron. 20 Lo trajeron sobre caballos y fue sepultado en Jerusalén con sus padres en la ciudad de David. 21 Y todo el pueblo de Judá tomó a Azarías[n], que tenía dieciséis años, y lo hicieron rey en lugar de su padre Amasías. 22 Él edificó a Elat(V) y la restituyó a Judá, después que el rey durmió con sus padres.

23 En el año quince de Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, Jeroboam, hijo de Jeoás[o], rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar en Samaria, y reinó cuarenta y un años. 24 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos del Señor; no se apartó de todos los pecados con que Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, hizo pecar a Israel. 25 Él restableció la frontera de Israel(W) desde la entrada de Hamat(X) hasta el mar de Arabá(Y), conforme a la palabra que el Señor, Dios de Israel, había hablado por medio[p] de su siervo el profeta Jonás, hijo de Amitai(Z), que era de Gat-hefer(AA). 26 Porque el Señor había visto la aflicción de Israel, que era muy amarga(AB); pues no había siervo ni libre, ni nadie que ayudara a Israel(AC). 27 Pero el Señor no había decidido borrar el nombre de Israel de debajo del cielo, y los salvó(AD) por mano de Jeroboam, hijo de Jeoás[q].

28 Los demás hechos de Jeroboam y todo lo que hizo y su poder, cómo peleó y cómo recobró para Israel a Damasco(AE) y a Hamat(AF), que habían pertenecido a Judá, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las Crónicas de los reyes de Israel? 29 Y durmió Jeroboam con sus padres, con los reyes de Israel, y su hijo Zacarías reinó en su lugar.

14 En el segundo año de Joás, hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel, Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar. 2 Tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar; reinó en Jerusalén veintinueve años. Su madre era Joadán, oriunda de Jerusalén. 3 Amasías hizo lo que agrada al Señor, aunque no como lo había hecho su antepasado David. En todo siguió el ejemplo de su padre Joás. 4 Sin embargo, no se quitaron los altares paganos, sino que el pueblo siguió ofreciendo sacrificios y quemando incienso en ellos.

5 Después de afianzarse en el poder, Amasías mató a los ministros que habían asesinado a su padre el rey. 6 Sin embargo, según lo que ordenó el Señor, no mató a los hijos de los asesinos, pues está escrito en el libro de la Ley de Moisés: «No se dará muerte a los padres por la culpa de sus hijos ni se dará muerte a los hijos por la culpa de sus padres. Cada uno morirá por su propio pecado».[a]

7 Amasías derrotó a diez mil edomitas en el valle de la Sal; también conquistó la ciudad de Selá y le puso por nombre Joctel, que es como se conoce hasta el día de hoy.

8 Por aquel tiempo, Amasías envió mensajeros a Joás, hijo de Joacaz y nieto de Jehú, rey de Israel, con este reto: «¡Ven acá, para que nos enfrentemos!».

9 Pero Joás, rey de Israel, respondió a Amasías, rey de Judá: «El cardo del Líbano mandó este mensaje al cedro: “¡Entrega a tu hija como esposa a mi hijo!”. Pero luego pasaron por allí las fieras del Líbano y aplastaron el cardo. 10 De hecho, has derrotado a los edomitas y actúas con arrogancia. Está bien, jáctate si quieres, pero quédate en casa. ¿Para qué provocas una desgracia que significará tu perdición y la de Judá?».

11 Amasías no le hizo caso. Así que Joás, rey de Israel, marchó a Bet Semes, que está en Judá, para enfrentarse con él. 12 Los israelitas vencieron a los de Judá, y estos huyeron a sus casas. 13 En Bet Semes, Joás, rey de Israel, capturó a Amasías, rey de Judá, hijo de Joás y nieto de Ocozías. Luego fue a Jerusalén y derribó cuatrocientos codos[b] de la muralla, desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta de la Esquina. 14 Además, se apoderó de todo el oro, la plata y los utensilios que estaban en el Templo del Señor y en los tesoros del palacio real. También tomó rehenes y regresó a Samaria.

17 Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, sobrevivió quince años a Joás, hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel. 18 Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Amasías están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá.

19 Como se tramó una conspiración contra él en Jerusalén, Amasías huyó a Laquis; pero lo persiguieron y allí lo mataron. 20 Luego lo llevaron a caballo hasta Jerusalén, la Ciudad de David, y allí fue sepultado con sus antepasados.

21 Entonces todo el pueblo de Judá tomó a Azarías,[c] que tenía dieciséis años, y lo proclamó rey en lugar de su padre Amasías. 22 Y fue Uzías quien, después de la muerte del rey Amasías, reconstruyó la ciudad de Elat y la reincorporó a Judá.

Jeroboán II, rey de Israel

23 En el año quince del reinado de Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, Jeroboán, hijo de Joás, rey de Israel, comenzó a reinar; reinó en Samaria cuarenta y un años. 24 Jeroboán hizo lo malo ante los ojos del Señor, pues no se apartó de ninguno de los pecados con que Jeroboán, hijo de Nabat, hizo pecar a Israel. 25 Él fue quien restableció las fronteras de Israel desde Lebó Jamat[d] hasta el mar del Arabá, según la palabra que el Señor, Dios de Israel, había dado a conocer por medio de su siervo Jonás, hijo de Amitay, el profeta de Gat Jefer.

26 Porque el Señor había visto que todos los habitantes de Israel, esclavos o libres, sufrían amargamente y no había nadie que los ayudara. 27 Pero el Señor los salvó por medio de Jeroboán, hijo de Joás, pues había dicho que no borraría de la tierra el nombre de Israel.

28 Los demás acontecimientos del reinado de Jeroboán, y todo lo que hizo y su poderío, incluso sus guerras en las que recuperó para Israel a Damasco y a Jamat, que habían pertenecido a Judá, están escritos en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel. 29 Jeroboán murió y fue sepultado con sus antepasados, los reyes de Israel. Y su hijo Zacarías lo sucedió en el trono.

14 In the second year of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel reigned Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah.

2 He was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as Joash his father did.

4 Howbeit the high places were not taken away: as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places.

5 And it came to pass, as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, that he slew his servants which had slain the king his father.

6 But the children of the murderers he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

7 He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand, and took Selah by war, and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day.

8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.

9 And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.

10 Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thine heart hath lifted thee up: glory of this, and tarry at home: for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?

11 But Amaziah would not hear. Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah.

12 And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to their tents.

13 And Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah, at Bethshemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits.

14 And he took all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king's house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.

15 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

16 And Jehoash slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead.

17 And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.

18 And the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

19 Now they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem: and he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish, and slew him there.

20 And they brought him on horses: and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.

21 And all the people of Judah took Azariah, which was sixteen years old, and made him king instead of his father Amaziah.

22 He built Elath, and restored it to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers.

23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria, and reigned forty and one years.

24 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.

25 He restored the coast of Israel from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which he spake by the hand of his servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of Gathhepher.

26 For the Lord saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter: for there was not any shut up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel.

27 And the Lord said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven: but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.

28 Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damascus, and Hamath, which belonged to Judah, for Israel, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

29 And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, even with the kings of Israel; and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead.

Amaziah King of Judah(A)(B)

14 In the second year of Jehoash[a] son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 3 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father David had done. In everything he followed the example of his father Joash. 4 The high places,(C) however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.

5 After the kingdom was firmly in his grasp, he executed(D) the officials(E) who had murdered his father the king. 6 Yet he did not put the children of the assassins to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book of the Law(F) of Moses where the Lord commanded: “Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”[b](G)

7 He was the one who defeated ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt(H) and captured Sela(I) in battle, calling it Joktheel, the name it has to this day.

8 Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, with the challenge: “Come, let us face each other in battle.”

9 But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle(J) in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot. 10 You have indeed defeated Edom and now you are arrogant.(K) Glory in your victory, but stay at home! Why ask for trouble and cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?”

11 Amaziah, however, would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh(L) in Judah. 12 Judah was routed by Israel, and every man fled to his home.(M) 13 Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash went to Jerusalem and broke down the wall(N) of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate(O) to the Corner Gate(P)—a section about four hundred cubits long.[c] 14 He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of the Lord and in the treasuries of the royal palace. He also took hostages and returned to Samaria.

15 As for the other events of the reign of Jehoash, what he did and his achievements, including his war(Q) against Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel? 16 Jehoash rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel. And Jeroboam his son succeeded him as king.

17 Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 18 As for the other events of Amaziah’s reign, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah?

19 They conspired(R) against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish,(S) but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. 20 He was brought back by horse(T) and was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors, in the City of David.

Jeroboam II King of Israel

23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah, Jeroboam(W) son of Jehoash king of Israel became king in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. 24 He did evil in the eyes of the Lord and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit.(X) 25 He was the one who restored the boundaries of Israel from Lebo Hamath(Y) to the Dead Sea,[e](Z) in accordance with the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, spoken through his servant Jonah(AA) son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath Hepher.

26 The Lord had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free,(AB) was suffering;[f](AC) there was no one to help them.(AD) 27 And since the Lord had not said he would blot out(AE) the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved(AF) them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.

28 As for the other events of Jeroboam’s reign, all he did, and his military achievements, including how he recovered for Israel both Damascus(AG) and Hamath,(AH) which had belonged to Judah, are they not written in the book of the annals(AI) of the kings of Israel? 29 Jeroboam rested with his ancestors, the kings of Israel. And Zechariah his son succeeded him as king.
