Atalía usurpa el trono
11 (A)Cuando Atalía, madre de Ocozías, vio que su hijo había muerto, se levantó y exterminó a toda la descendencia[a] real. 2 Pero Josaba[b], hija del rey Joram, hermana de Ocozías, tomó a Joás(B), hijo de Ocozías, y lo sacó furtivamente de entre los hijos del rey a quienes estaban dando muerte, y lo puso a él y a su nodriza en la alcoba. Así lo escondieron de Atalía, y no le dieron muerte. 3 Y estuvo escondido con ella en la casa del Señor seis años, mientras Atalía reinaba en el país.
4 Pero en el séptimo año Joiada mandó a buscar[c] e hizo venir a los capitanes de centenas de los cariteos y de la guardia[d], y los hizo venir a él en la casa del Señor(C). Entonces hizo un pacto con ellos en la casa del Señor y los puso bajo juramento, y les mostró al hijo del rey(D). 5 Y les dio orden(E), diciendo: Esto es lo que haréis: una tercera parte de vosotros, los que entran en el día de reposo y hacen la guardia en la casa del rey, 6 harán[e] la guardia en la casa para su defensa; también una tercera parte estará en la puerta Sur, y otra tercera parte en la puerta detrás de los guardias[f]. 7 Dos partes de vosotros, es decir, todos los que salen el día de reposo, también harán la guardia en la casa del Señor junto al rey. 8 Entonces rodearéis al rey, cada uno con sus armas en la mano; y cualquiera que penetre las filas será muerto. Y estad con el rey cuando salga y cuando entre(F).
9 Y los capitanes de centenas hicieron conforme a todo lo que había ordenado el sacerdote Joiada. Y cada uno de ellos tomó sus hombres, los que habían de entrar en el día de reposo, junto con los que habían de salir el día de reposo, y vinieron al sacerdote Joiada(G). 10 Entonces el sacerdote dio a los capitanes de centenas las lanzas y los escudos que habían sido del rey David(H), que estaban en la casa del Señor. 11 Y los guardias[g] se colocaron cada uno con sus armas en la mano, desde el lado[h] derecho de la casa hasta el lado[i] izquierdo de la misma[j], junto al altar y junto a la casa, alrededor del rey. 12 Entonces Joiada sacó al hijo del rey y le puso la corona(I), y le dio el libro del testimonio(J); hicieron rey a Joás y lo ungieron, y batiendo palmas, gritaron[k]: ¡Viva el rey(K)!
13 Al oír Atalía el ruido de la guardia[l] y del pueblo, se llegó al pueblo en la casa del Señor(L), 14 y miró, y he aquí el rey estaba de pie junto a la columna, según la costumbre(M), y los capitanes y los trompetas[m] estaban al lado del rey; y todo el pueblo del país se regocijaba y tocaba trompetas(N). Entonces Atalía rasgó sus vestidos(O), y gritó: ¡Traición, traición(P)! 15 Pero el sacerdote Joiada dio orden a los capitanes de centenas que estaban al mando del ejército, y les dijo: Sacadla de entre[n] las filas, y al que la siga, matadlo a espada. Porque el sacerdote había dicho: No la matéis en la casa del Señor. 16 Y le echaron[o] mano; y cuando ella llegó a la entrada de los caballos de la casa del rey, allí la mataron(Q).
17 Entonces Joiada hizo un pacto entre el Señor(R) y el rey y el pueblo, de que ellos serían el pueblo del Señor; asimismo entre el rey y el pueblo(S). 18 Y todo el pueblo del país fue a la casa de Baal y la derribaron, destruyeron completamente sus altares y sus imágenes(T) y mataron delante de los altares a Matán, sacerdote de Baal(U). Y el sacerdote nombró oficiales[p] sobre la casa del Señor. 19 Y tomó a los capitanes de centenas, a los cariteos, a los guardias[q] y a todo el pueblo del país, e hicieron descender al rey de la casa del Señor(V), y vinieron por el camino de la puerta de los guardias[r](W) a la casa del rey. Y él se sentó en el trono de los reyes. 20 Y todo el pueblo del país se regocijó(X), y la ciudad quedó tranquila, porque Atalía había sido muerta a espada en la casa del rey.

11 Cuando Atalía, madre de Ocozías, supo que su hijo había muerto, fue y eliminó a toda la familia real. 2 Pero Joseba, hija del rey Joram y hermana de Ocozías, apartó a Joás, hijo de Ocozías, de los otros hijos del rey a los que estaban matando, y lo escondió de Atalía, junto con su nodriza, en un dormitorio. Así que no lo mataron, 3 y Joás estuvo escondido con su nodriza en el templo del Señor durante seis años. Mientras tanto, Atalía gobernó el país.
4 Al séptimo año, Joiadá mandó llamar a los capitanes, y a los quereteos y los guardias, y los hizo entrar en el templo del Señor, donde él estaba. Allí hizo con ellos un pacto bajo juramento, y les mostró al príncipe Joás. 5 Luego les ordenó: «Esto es lo que van a hacer ustedes: una tercera parte de ustedes estará de guardia en el palacio en el sábado; 6 otra tercera parte estará en la puerta de Sur; y la otra tercera parte en la puerta posterior del cuartel de la guardia. Así cubrirán ustedes por turnos la guardia del palacio. 7 Ahora bien, las dos secciones que salen de guardia el sábado, montarán la guardia en el templo del Señor, junto al rey. 8 Ustedes formarán un círculo alrededor del rey, cada uno con sus armas en la mano, y el que intente penetrar en las filas, morirá. Ustedes acompañarán al rey dondequiera que él vaya.»
9 Los capitanes hicieron todo lo que el sacerdote Joiadá les había ordenado. Cada cual tomó el mando de sus hombres, tanto los que entraban de guardia en sábado como los que salían, y se presentaron al sacerdote Joiadá. 10 Entonces el sacerdote entregó a los capitanes las lanzas y los escudos que habían pertenecido al rey David, y que estaban en el templo del Señor. 11 Los guardias tomaron sus puestos, desde el ala derecha hasta el ala izquierda del templo, y alrededor del altar, cada cual con su arma en la mano para proteger al rey. 12 Entonces Joiadá sacó al hijo del rey, le puso la corona y las insignias reales, y después de derramar aceite sobre él lo proclamó rey. Luego todos aplaudieron y gritaron: «¡Viva el rey!»
13 Cuando Atalía oyó las aclamaciones de los guardias y de la gente, fue al templo del Señor, donde estaban todos. 14 Vio allí al rey, de pie junto a la columna, según era la costumbre. A su lado estaban los jefes y la banda de música, y la gente muy alegre y tocando trompetas. Entonces Atalía rasgó sus vestidos, y gritó:
—¡Traición! ¡Traición!
15 Pero el sacerdote Joiadá ordenó a los capitanes que estaban al mando del ejército:
—¡Sáquenla de entre las filas, y pasen a cuchillo al que la siga!
Como el sacerdote había ordenado que no la mataran en el templo del Señor, 16 la apresaron y la sacaron por la entrada de la caballería al palacio real, y allí la mataron.
17 Después Joiadá hizo una alianza entre el Señor, el rey y el pueblo, de que ellos serían el pueblo del Señor, y también entre el rey y el pueblo. 18 Luego fueron todos al templo de Baal y lo derribaron, destrozando por completo sus altares y sus ídolos. En cuanto a Matán, el sacerdote de Baal, lo degollaron ante los altares. A continuación, el sacerdote puso una guardia en el templo del Señor; 19 luego tomó a los capitanes, a los quereteos, a los guardias y a toda la gente, y juntos acompañaron al rey desde el templo del Señor hasta el palacio real, entrando por la puerta de la guardia. Joás se sentó en el trono, 20 y todo el pueblo se alegró. Y como Atalía había muerto a filo de espada en el palacio real, la ciudad quedó tranquila.

11 Cuando Atalía, la madre de Ocozías, se enteró de que su hijo había muerto, ordenó matar a toda la familia del rey. 2 Pero Joseba hija del rey Joram y hermana de Ocozías, tomó a Joás, que era uno de los hijos de Ocozías, y lo escondió con su niñera en el dormitorio. Así escapó Joás de la muerte, 3 y estuvo escondido con su niñera en el templo de Dios durante seis años. Mientras tanto, Atalía reinaba en el país.
4 Al séptimo año, el sacerdote Joiadá mandó llamar a los capitanes de la guardia personal del rey y a los jefes de la guardia del palacio, y los hizo entrar en el templo para hablar con ellos. Allí Joiadá les pidió jurar que guardarían en secreto lo que les iba a revelar. Luego les mostró al hijo del rey, 5 y les ordenó:
«Esto es lo que quiero que hagan. Una tercera parte de ustedes estará de guardia en el palacio el sábado. 6 La otra cuidará la entrada de los cimientos y la última cuidará la entrada trasera del cuartel de la guardia. De esta manera tendrán vigilado el palacio. 7 Los dos grupos que no estén de guardia el sábado, vigilarán el templo de Dios. 8 Deberán rodear al rey y protegerlo de cualquiera que se le acerque. Si alguien lo hiciera, deberán matarlo; por eso quiero que cada uno tenga sus armas en la mano. Ustedes acompañarán al rey a dondequiera que él vaya».
9 Los capitanes hicieron todo lo que se les ordenó. Cada capitán llevó delante del sacerdote Joiadá a sus hombres, tanto a los que iban a estar de guardia el sábado como a los que no lo estarían. 10 El sacerdote les dio a los capitanes las lanzas y los escudos que estaban en el templo, y que habían sido del rey David.
11 Los guardias, con sus armas en la mano, rodearon el altar y el templo desde la parte sur hasta la parte norte, y así protegieron al rey. 12 Entonces Joiadá sacó a Joás, le puso la corona y le dio un documento con instrucciones para gobernar. Después le derramó aceite en la cabeza y así lo nombró rey. Todos aplaudieron y gritaron: «¡Viva el rey!»
13 Cuando Atalía escuchó el alboroto que hacían los guardias y la gente, fue al templo. 14 Allí vio a Joás de pie, al lado de la columna del templo, como era la costumbre al nombrarse un rey. Junto a él estaban los capitanes y los músicos; la gente, llena de alegría, tocaba las trompetas. Entonces Atalía rompió su ropa y gritó: «¡Traición! ¡Traición!»
15 El sacerdote Joiadá les ordenó a los capitanes del ejército: «¡No la maten en el templo, mátenla afuera, y también a cualquiera que la defienda!» 16 Así que la tomaron presa, la sacaron por la puerta del establo, la llevaron al palacio y allí la mataron.
17 Después Joiadá les pidió al rey y al pueblo apoyarse mutuamente. También les pidió que se mantuvieran fieles a Dios. 18 Después todos fueron al templo de Baal y lo derribaron, y destruyeron los altares y los ídolos. En cuanto al sacerdote de Baal, que se llamaba Matán, le cortaron la cabeza frente a los altares.
Joiadá dejó una guardia vigilando el templo de Dios, 19 y luego reunió al resto de los soldados y a toda la gente. Entre todos ellos llevaron al rey desde el templo hasta el palacio, entrando por el portón de la guardia. El rey Joás se sentó en el trono, 20 y todo el pueblo hizo fiesta.
Después de la muerte de Atalía, la ciudad vivió tranquila.

2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of king Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king's sons which were slain; and they hid him, even him and his nurse, in the bedchamber from Athaliah, so that he was not slain.
3 And he was with her hid in the house of the Lord six years. And Athaliah did reign over the land.
4 And the seventh year Jehoiada sent and fetched the rulers over hundreds, with the captains and the guard, and brought them to him into the house of the Lord, and made a covenant with them, and took an oath of them in the house of the Lord, and shewed them the king's son.
5 And he commanded them, saying, This is the thing that ye shall do; A third part of you that enter in on the sabbath shall even be keepers of the watch of the king's house;
6 And a third part shall be at the gate of Sur; and a third part at the gate behind the guard: so shall ye keep the watch of the house, that it be not broken down.
7 And two parts of all you that go forth on the sabbath, even they shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord about the king.
8 And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in.
9 And the captains over the hundreds did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest commanded: and they took every man his men that were to come in on the sabbath, with them that should go out on the sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.
10 And to the captains over hundreds did the priest give king David's spears and shields, that were in the temple of the Lord.
11 And the guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, round about the king, from the right corner of the temple to the left corner of the temple, along by the altar and the temple.
12 And he brought forth the king's son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king.
13 And when Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she came to the people into the temple of the Lord.
14 And when she looked, behold, the king stood by a pillar, as the manner was, and the princes and the trumpeters by the king, and all the people of the land rejoiced, and blew with trumpets: and Athaliah rent her clothes, and cried, Treason, Treason.
15 But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the Lord.
16 And they laid hands on her; and she went by the way by the which the horses came into the king's house: and there was she slain.
17 And Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and the people, that they should be the Lord's people; between the king also and the people.
18 And all the people of the land went into the house of Baal, and brake it down; his altars and his images brake they in pieces thoroughly, and slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest appointed officers over the house of the Lord.
19 And he took the rulers over hundreds, and the captains, and the guard, and all the people of the land; and they brought down the king from the house of the Lord, and came by the way of the gate of the guard to the king's house. And he sat on the throne of the kings.
20 And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was in quiet: and they slew Athaliah with the sword beside the king's house.

11 When Athaliah(B) the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she proceeded to destroy the whole royal family. 2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram[a] and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash(C) son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes, who were about to be murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah; so he was not killed.(D) 3 He remained hidden with his nurse at the temple of the Lord for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.
4 In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the commanders of units of a hundred, the Carites(E) and the guards and had them brought to him at the temple of the Lord. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath at the temple of the Lord. Then he showed them the king’s son. 5 He commanded them, saying, “This is what you are to do: You who are in the three companies that are going on duty on the Sabbath(F)—a third of you guarding the royal palace,(G) 6 a third at the Sur Gate, and a third at the gate behind the guard, who take turns guarding the temple— 7 and you who are in the other two companies that normally go off Sabbath duty are all to guard the temple for the king. 8 Station yourselves around the king, each of you with weapon in hand. Anyone who approaches your ranks[b] is to be put to death. Stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
9 The commanders of units of a hundred did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered. Each one took his men—those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 Then he gave the commanders the spears and shields(H) that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of the Lord. 11 The guards, each with weapon in hand, stationed themselves around the king—near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.
12 Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him; he presented him with a copy of the covenant(I) and proclaimed him king. They anointed(J) him, and the people clapped their hands(K) and shouted, “Long live the king!”(L)
13 When Athaliah heard the noise made by the guards and the people, she went to the people at the temple of the Lord. 14 She looked and there was the king, standing by the pillar,(M) as the custom was. The officers and the trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets.(N) Then Athaliah tore(O) her robes and called out, “Treason! Treason!”(P)
15 Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of units of a hundred, who were in charge of the troops: “Bring her out between the ranks[c] and put to the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the temple(Q) of the Lord.” 16 So they seized her as she reached the place where the horses enter(R) the palace grounds, and there she was put to death.(S)
17 Jehoiada then made a covenant(T) between the Lord and the king and people that they would be the Lord’s people. He also made a covenant between the king and the people.(U) 18 All the people of the land went to the temple(V) of Baal and tore it down. They smashed(W) the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest(X) of Baal in front of the altars.
Then Jehoiada the priest posted guards at the temple of the Lord. 19 He took with him the commanders of hundreds, the Carites,(Y) the guards and all the people of the land, and together they brought the king down from the temple of the Lord and went into the palace, entering by way of the gate of the guards. The king then took his place on the royal throne. 20 All the people of the land rejoiced,(Z) and the city was calm, because Athaliah had been slain with the sword at the palace.
