Jeú ungido rei de Israel
9 Eliseu tinha mandado chamar um dos jovens profetas para lhe dizer: “Prepara-te para ires a Ramote-Gileade. 2 Pega nesta almotolia e vai ter com Jeú, o filho de Jeosafá e neto de Ninsi. Chama-o à parte, longe dos que o rodeiam. 3 Derrama o óleo sobre ele e diz-lhe que o Senhor o unge para que seja rei de Israel. Em seguida, foge depressa!”
4 O jovem fez como lhe foi mandado. Quando chegou a Ramote-Gileade, 5 foi ter com Jeú, que estava sentado com os oficiais do exército à sua volta, e disse-lhe: “Tenho uma mensagem para ti, senhor.” Jeú perguntou: “Para qual de nós?” E respondeu: “Para ti, capitão.”
6 Jeú levantou-se, entrou nos seus aposentos e o jovem profeta derramou sobre ele o óleo, dizendo: “Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: ‘Unjo-te rei de Israel, o povo do Senhor. 7 Deverás destruir a família de Acabe. Vingarás a morte dos meus profetas e do resto do meu povo que foi assassinado por Jezabel. 8 Toda a família de Acabe deverá ser varrida da terra; todos os homens, sejam eles quem forem. 9 Destruirei a família de Acabe tal como destruí a família de Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, e de Bacha, filho de Aías. 10 Cães comerão Jezabel, a mulher de Acabe, em Jezreel, e não haverá ninguém que a enterre.’ ” Depois de pronunciar estas palavras, abriu a porta e fugiu a correr.
11 Jeú voltou para junto dos seus amigos, os quais lhe perguntaram: “Há alguma novidade? O que é que esse maluco te veio dizer?” Jeú respondeu: “Vocês sabem muito bem quem era e o que ele queria.”
12 “Não, não sabemos. Diz lá o que ele queria.” Então Jeú contou: “Ele disse-me o seguinte: ‘Assim diz o Senhor: Eu te ungi rei sobre Israel!’ ”
13 Os outros, sem perder tempo, puseram as suas capas sobre os degraus da casa, mandaram tocar a trombeta e gritaram: “Jeú é rei!”
Jeú mata Jorão e Acazias
(2 Cr 22.7-9)
14 Foi assim que Jeú, filho de Jeosafá, filho de Ninsi, se revoltou contra o rei Jorão. Este tinha estado em Ramote-Gileade, defendendo Israel das forças do rei Hazael de Aram. 15 No entanto, fora para Jezreel com o fim de se restabelecer dos ferimentos. “Visto que me querem como rei”, disse Jeú aos homens que estavam com ele, “não deixem que ninguém escape da cidade e vá contar em Jezreel o que fizemos.”
16 Jeú subiu para um carro de combate e dirigiu-se ele próprio a Jezreel, para se encontrar com Jorão, que se encontrava de cama ainda ferido. Também o rei Acazias de Judá ali estava, pois tinha ido visitá-lo. 17 A sentinela na torre da povoação viu Jeú e os seus acompanhantes aproximarem-se e gritou: “Está a chegar um grupo de gente.”
“Manda um cavaleiro que vá ver se são amigos ou inimigos!”, disse Jorão. 18 E saiu para ir ter com eles um homem a cavalo: “O rei manda perguntar se vêm como amigos ou como inimigos”, disse o cavaleiro a Jeú. “Vêm com intuitos de paz?” Jeú replicou: “Que é que tu entendes de paz ou de guerra? Passa já para trás de mim!”
O vigia mandou novo recado ao rei dizendo-lhe que o mensageiro enviado ao encontro dos outros não tinha regressado. 19 O rei mandou outro cavaleiro, que lhes perguntou igualmente se vinham como amigos ou como inimigos. “Que história é essa de amigos ou inimigos? Passa já para trás de mim!”, respondeu Jeú.
20 “Também este lá ficou!”, exclamou a sentinela. “Deve tratar-se de Jeú, pela forma como se aproxima furiosamente.”
21 “Depressa! Preparem o meu carro!”, mandou o rei. E logo saiu, em companhia de Acazias, ao encontro de Jeú. Encontraram-se com ele no campo de Nabote. 22 Jorão perguntou-lhe: “Vens como amigo, Jeú?” Jeú respondeu: “Como pode haver paz, enquanto a tua mãe, Jezabel, continuar com as suas práticas de feitiçaria e idolatria?”
23 Jorão fez meia-volta com o seu carro, gritando enquanto fugia: “Traição, Acazias! Atraiçoaram-nos!” 24 Jeú retesou com toda a força o seu arco e atirou-lhe uma flecha que o apanhou entre as espáduas. Com o coração perfurado, caiu logo morto do carro para o chão.
25 Jeú disse para Bidcar, o seu assistente: “Lança-o no campo de Nabote, porque uma vez, quando vínhamos atrás do seu pai Acabe, o Senhor revelou-me esta profecia: 26 ‘Assim como ontem vi o assassínio de Nabote e dos seus filhos, assim dar-lhe-ei aqui mesmo, neste campo, a paga deste assassínio.’ Por isso, deita-o na antiga propriedade de Nabote, tal como o Senhor disse.”
27 Entretanto, Acazias, o rei de Judá, fugira pelo caminho que vai para Bete-Hagã. Mas Jeú foi atrás dele gritando: “Matem-no! Matem também esse!” E, com efeito, mataram-no no seu carro, no lugar em que o caminho sobe para Gur, perto de Ibleão. Conseguiu mesmo ir até Megido, mas acabou por morrer ali. 28 Os seus oficiais levaram-no num carro para Jerusalém, onde o enterraram no cemitério real. 29 O reinado de Acazias sobre Judá tinha começado no décimo segundo ano do reinado de Jorão de Israel.
A morte de Jezabel
30 Quando Jezabel ouviu que Jeú tinha vindo a Jezreel, arranjou-se toda, pintou os olhos, penteou-se e foi sentar-se à janela. 31 Na altura em que Jeú regressava e entrava pelo portão do palácio, ela gritou-lhe: “Então já estás satisfeito, tu Zimri, que mataste o teu senhor[a]?”
32 Ele olhou para cima, viu-a à janela e disse: “O que eu quero agora saber é quem está do meu lado.” Nessa altura, dois ou três eunucos que se encontravam ali perto de Jezabel, olharam para ele: 33 “Atirem-na daí abaixo!”, gritou-lhes Jeú. Eles empurraram-na da janela abaixo e, ao esmagar-se no solo, o sangue espirrou para as paredes e sobre os cavalos; estes, excitados, esmagaram-na sob as patas.
34 Jeú entrou no palácio para comer. Mais tarde, disse: “Que alguém vá enterrar essa mulher maldita, porque sempre era filha de um rei!” 35 Contudo, quando foram buscar o cadáver, apenas acharam a caveira, os pés e as mãos.
36 Regressando e, ao darem-lhe conta disso, Jeú reconheceu: “Foi justamente o que o Senhor afirmou que haveria de acontecer, através de Elias, o tesbita. Ele disse que no campo os cães comeriam a carne de Jezabel. 37 E que o seu corpo seria lançado como esterco no campo, sem que ninguém a pudesse reconhecer.”

9 And Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said unto him, Gird up thy loins, and take this box of oil in thine hand, and go to Ramothgilead:
2 And when thou comest thither, look out there Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in, and make him arise up from among his brethren, and carry him to an inner chamber;
3 Then take the box of oil, and pour it on his head, and say, Thus saith the Lord, I have anointed thee king over Israel. Then open the door, and flee, and tarry not.
4 So the young man, even the young man the prophet, went to Ramothgilead.
5 And when he came, behold, the captains of the host were sitting; and he said, I have an errand to thee, O captain. And Jehu said, Unto which of all us? And he said, To thee, O captain.
6 And he arose, and went into the house; and he poured the oil on his head, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I have anointed thee king over the people of the Lord, even over Israel.
7 And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezebel.
8 For the whole house of Ahab shall perish: and I will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel:
9 And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah:
10 And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel, and there shall be none to bury her. And he opened the door, and fled.
11 Then Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord: and one said unto him, Is all well? wherefore came this mad fellow to thee? And he said unto them, Ye know the man, and his communication.
12 And they said, It is false; tell us now. And he said, Thus and thus spake he to me, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I have anointed thee king over Israel.
13 Then they hasted, and took every man his garment, and put it under him on the top of the stairs, and blew with trumpets, saying, Jehu is king.
14 So Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. (Now Joram had kept Ramothgilead, he and all Israel, because of Hazael king of Syria.
15 But king Joram was returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) And Jehu said, If it be your minds, then let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in Jezreel.
16 So Jehu rode in a chariot, and went to Jezreel; for Joram lay there. And Ahaziah king of Judah was come down to see Joram.
17 And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel, and he spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And Joram said, Take an horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace?
18 So there went one on horseback to meet him, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And Jehu said, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me. And the watchman told, saying, The messenger came to them, but he cometh not again.
19 Then he sent out a second on horseback, which came to them, and said, Thus saith the king, Is it peace? And Jehu answered, What hast thou to do with peace? turn thee behind me.
20 And the watchman told, saying, He came even unto them, and cometh not again: and the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi; for he driveth furiously.
21 And Joram said, Make ready. And his chariot was made ready. And Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out, each in his chariot, and they went out against Jehu, and met him in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite.
22 And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many?
23 And Joram turned his hands, and fled, and said to Ahaziah, There is treachery, O Ahaziah.
24 And Jehu drew a bow with his full strength, and smote Jehoram between his arms, and the arrow went out at his heart, and he sunk down in his chariot.
25 Then said Jehu to Bidkar his captain, Take up, and cast him in the portion of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite: for remember how that, when I and thou rode together after Ahab his father, the Lord laid this burden upon him;
26 Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons, saith the Lord; and I will requite thee in this plat, saith the Lord. Now therefore take and cast him into the plat of ground, according to the word of the Lord.
27 But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And Jehu followed after him, and said, Smite him also in the chariot. And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo, and died there.
28 And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers in the city of David.
29 And in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab began Ahaziah to reign over Judah.
30 And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window.
31 And as Jehu entered in at the gate, she said, Had Zimri peace, who slew his master?
32 And he lifted up his face to the window, and said, Who is on my side? who? And there looked out to him two or three eunuchs.
33 And he said, Throw her down. So they threw her down: and some of her blood was sprinkled on the wall, and on the horses: and he trode her under foot.
34 And when he was come in, he did eat and drink, and said, Go, see now this cursed woman, and bury her: for she is a king's daughter.
35 And they went to bury her: but they found no more of her than the skull, and the feet, and the palms of her hands.
36 Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the Lord, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel:
37 And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel.

Jehu Anointed King of Israel
9 The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company(A) of the prophets and said to him, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(B) take this flask of olive oil(C) with you and go to Ramoth Gilead.(D) 2 When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room. 3 Then take the flask and pour the oil(E) on his head and declare, ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run; don’t delay!”
4 So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead. 5 When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said.
“For which of us?” asked Jehu.
“For you, commander,” he replied.
6 Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil(F) on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel. 7 You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge(G) the blood of my servants(H) the prophets and the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel.(I) 8 The whole house(J) of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male(K) in Israel—slave or free.[a] 9 I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam(L) son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha(M) son of Ahijah. 10 As for Jezebel, dogs(N) will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and ran.
11 When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did this maniac(O) come to you?”
“You know the man and the sort of things he says,” Jehu replied.
12 “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.”
Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’”
13 They quickly took their cloaks and spread(P) them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet(Q) and shouted, “Jehu is king!”
Jehu Kills Joram and Ahaziah(R)
14 So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been defending Ramoth Gilead(S) against Hazael king of Aram, 15 but King Joram[b] had returned to Jezreel to recover(T) from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him in the battle with Hazael king of Aram.) Jehu said, “If you desire to make me king, don’t let anyone slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.” 16 Then he got into his chariot and rode to Jezreel, because Joram was resting there and Ahaziah(U) king of Judah had gone down to see him.
17 When the lookout(V) standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu’s troops approaching, he called out, “I see some troops coming.”
“Get a horseman,” Joram ordered. “Send him to meet them and ask, ‘Do you come in peace?(W)’”
18 The horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said, “This is what the king says: ‘Do you come in peace?’”
“What do you have to do with peace?” Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.”
The lookout reported, “The messenger has reached them, but he isn’t coming back.”
19 So the king sent out a second horseman. When he came to them he said, “This is what the king says: ‘Do you come in peace?’”
Jehu replied, “What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me.”
20 The lookout reported, “He has reached them, but he isn’t coming back either. The driving is like(X) that of Jehu son of Nimshi—he drives like a maniac.”
21 “Hitch up my chariot,” Joram ordered. And when it was hitched up, Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah rode out, each in his own chariot, to meet Jehu. They met him at the plot of ground that had belonged to Naboth(Y) the Jezreelite. 22 When Joram saw Jehu he asked, “Have you come in peace, Jehu?”
“How can there be peace,” Jehu replied, “as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel(Z) abound?”
23 Joram turned about and fled, calling out to Ahaziah, “Treachery,(AA) Ahaziah!”
24 Then Jehu drew his bow(AB) and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart and he slumped down in his chariot. 25 Jehu said to Bidkar, his chariot officer, “Pick him up and throw him on the field that belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. Remember how you and I were riding together in chariots behind Ahab his father when the Lord spoke this prophecy(AC) against him: 26 ‘Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth(AD) and the blood of his sons, declares the Lord, and I will surely make you pay for it on this plot of ground, declares the Lord.’[c] Now then, pick him up and throw him on that plot, in accordance with the word of the Lord.”(AE)
27 When Ahaziah king of Judah saw what had happened, he fled up the road to Beth Haggan.[d] Jehu chased him, shouting, “Kill him too!” They wounded him in his chariot on the way up to Gur near Ibleam,(AF) but he escaped to Megiddo(AG) and died there. 28 His servants took him by chariot(AH) to Jerusalem and buried him with his ancestors in his tomb in the City of David. 29 (In the eleventh(AI) year of Joram son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king of Judah.)
Jezebel Killed
30 Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she put on eye makeup,(AJ) arranged her hair and looked out of a window. 31 As Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, you Zimri,(AK) you murderer of your master?”[e]
32 He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked down at him. 33 “Throw her down!” Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot.(AL)
34 Jehu went in and ate and drank. “Take care of that cursed woman,” he said, “and bury her, for she was a king’s daughter.”(AM) 35 But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands. 36 They went back and told Jehu, who said, “This is the word of the Lord that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs(AN) will devour Jezebel’s flesh.[f](AO) 37 Jezebel’s body will be like dung(AP) on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, ‘This is Jezebel.’”
