Jeú é consagrado rei de Israel
9 O profeta Eliseu chamou a um dos discípulos dos profetas e disse:
—Fique preparado, pegue esta jarra na sua mão e vá a Ramote-Gileade. 2 Quando chegar ali, procure por Jeú, o filho de Josafá e neto de Ninsi. Afaste-o dos seus irmãos e leve-o para um quarto. 3 Pegue a jarra de azeite, derrame-o sobre a cabeça e diga a ele: “Assim diz o SENHOR: Consagro você para ser o novo rei de Israel”. Depois corra depressa e escape. Não se detenha por nenhum motivo.
4 Então este jovem profeta foi a Ramote-Gileade. 5 Quando chegou o jovem, viu que todos os capitães do exército estavam sentados e disse:
—Capitão, tenho uma mensagem para você.
Jeú perguntou:
—Para qual de nós é a mensagem?
O jovem disse:
—Para você, senhor.
6 Jeú se levantou e entrou na casa. Então o jovem profeta derramou o azeite na cabeça de Jeú e disse:
—O SENHOR Deus de Israel diz: “Eu o consagro como o novo rei de Israel, o povo do SENHOR. 7 Você terá que destruir a família do seu rei Acabe e assim castigarei a Jezabel pela morte dos meus servos os profetas e a de todos os servos do SENHOR que foram assassinados. 8 Assim toda a família de Acabe morrerá. Não ficará em Israel nenhum filho da família de Acabe, seja escravo ou livre. 9 A família de Acabe terminará como a família de Jeroboão filho de Nebate e como a família de Baasa filho de Aías. 10 Os cães comerão a Jezabel na região de Jezreel, e ninguém a sepultará”.
E o jovem profeta abriu a porta e saiu correndo.
Os servos proclamam Jeú como rei
11 Jeú regressou aos oficiais do rei. Um deles perguntou a Jeú:
—Está tudo bem? Para que se lhe aproximou esse louco?
Jeú respondeu aos oficiais:
—Já o conhecem e sabem das locuras que diz.
12 Os oficiais disseram:
—Não! Diga-nos a verdade. O que lhe disse?
Jeú contou aos oficiais o que o jovem profeta tinha lhe falado. Jeú disse:
—Me disse assim e assim, e que o SENHOR diz: “Eu o tenho consagrado para ser o novo rei de Israel”.
13 Então cada oficial tirou o manto e o pôs nos degraus perante Jeú. Tocaram a trombeta e proclamaram:
—Viva o rei Jeú!
14 Portanto Jeú, filho de Josafá e neto de Ninsi, conspirou contra Jorão.
Naquele tempo Jorão e os israelitas estavam defendendo Ramote-Gileade contra o ataque de Hazael, rei da Síria. 15 O rei Jorão tinha lutado contra Hazael, rei da Síria. Mas os sírios o feriram, e o rei tinha ido a Jezreel para curar as feridas. Então Jeú disse aos oficiais:
—Se concordam com que eu seja o novo rei, então não permitam que ninguém escape da cidade para contar as notícias em Jezreel.
16 Jorão estava descansando em Jezreel, portanto Jeú subiu ao seu carro e foi até Jezreel. Acazias, rei de Judá, também tinha ido a Jezreel para ver a Jorão. 17 Um guarda estava em pé na torre de Jezreel. Quando ele viu ao grupo de Jeú se aproximando, avisou:
—Vêm muita gente!
Então Jeorão disse:
—Mandem ao seu encontro um mensageiro a cavalo para saber se vêm em paz.
18 Portanto o mensageiro foi ao encontro de Jeú e disse:
—O rei Jeorão lhe pergunta: “Vem em paz?”
Jeú lhe disse:
—A você não lhe interessa se venho em paz. Venha e me siga.
O guarda avisou a Jorão:
—O mensageiro saiu ao encontro do grupo, mas não regressou.
19 Então Jorão mandou um segundo mensageiro a cavalo. Se aproximou ao grupo de Jeú e lhes disse:
—O rei Jorão diz: “Paz”.[a]
Jeú respondeu:
—A você não lhe interessa se venho em paz. Venha e me siga.
20 O guarda avisou a Jorão:
—O segundo mensageiro não tem voltado. Há um homem guiando um carro como louco! Deve ser Jeú, filho de Ninsi.
21 Jorão disse:
—Me tragam o carro!
Portanto os servos trouxeram o carro de Jorão. Tanto Jorão, rei de Israel, como Acazias, rei de Judá, subiram aos seus carros e saíram ao encontro de Jeú. Eles se encontraram com Jeú na propriedade de Nabote, de Jezreel.
22 Jorão viu Jeú e lhe perguntou:
—Você vem em paz, Jeú?
Jeú respondeu:
—Não há paz enquanto a sua mãe Jezabel continuar praticando prostituição e bruxaria.
23 Jorão deu meia volta para escapar e disse a Acazias:
—Traição, Acazias!
24 Mas Jeú pegou seu arco e disparou a Jorão nas costas, penetrando seu coração. Jorão caiu morto no seu carro. 25 Jeú disse a Bidcar, o oficial ajudante que guiava seu carro:
—Leve o corpo de Jorão e jogue-o na vinha de Nabote de Jezreel. Lembre que quando você e eu cavalgávamos com seu pai Acabe, o SENHOR disse que isso aconteceria. 26 O SENHOR disse: “Ontem vi o sangue de Nabote e dos seus filhos, e assim castigarei a Acabe neste campo”. Portanto leve o corpo de Jorão e jogue-o no campo, assim como disse o SENHOR.
27 Quando Acazias, rei de Judá, viu tudo isso, tentou escapar pela casa do jardim, mas Jeú o perseguiu, dizendo:
—Matem também a Acazias!
Feriram a Acazias enquanto este fugia no seu carro no caminho para Gur, perto de Ibleã. Ele conseguiu chegar a Megido, mas ali morreu. 28 Os servos de Acazias levaram seu corpo no carro até Jerusalém e o sepultaram na tumba com os seus antepassados na Cidade de Davi.
29 Acazias havia começado a reinar em Judá no décimo primeiro ano do reinado de Jorão filho de Acabe em Israel.
Morte de Jezabel
30 Jeú se aproximou de Jezreel, e Jezabel ficou sabendo das notícias. Ela maquiou os seus olhos, arrumou seu cabelo e olhou pela janela. 31 Quando Jeú entrou na cidade, Jezabel disse:
—Olá, Zinri[b]. Assim como ele, você matou a seu senhor.
32 Jeú olhou para a janela e disse:
—Quem está do meu lado? Quem?
Então apareceram dois ou três oficiais, 33 e Jeú lhes disse:
—Joguem a Jezabel!
Então os oficiais lançaram a Jezabel pela janela. O sangue de Jezabel salpicou as paredes e os cavalos pisaram o seu corpo. 34 Então Jeú entrou na casa para comer e beber, e disse:
—Agora embora essa mulher seja amaldiçoada, encarreguem-se para que seja sepultada, porque afinal de contas era filha de um rei.
35 Quando os homens foram sepultar Jezabel, não encontraram seu cadáver. Só encontraram o crânio, os pés e as palmas das mãos. 36 Contaram isso a Jeú, quem lhes disse:
—O SENHOR falou ao seu servo Elias o tesbita: “Os cães comerão o corpo de Jezabel em Jezreel. 37 Seu corpo será como um campo onde se guarda esterco em Jezreel e ninguém o poderá reconhecer”.

Jehu Anointed King of Israel
9 Then Elisha the prophet called one of (A)the sons of the prophets and said to him, (B)“Tie up your garments, and take this (C)flask of oil in your hand, and go to (D)Ramoth-gilead. 2 And when you arrive, look there for Jehu (E)the son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi. And go in and have him rise from among (F)his fellows, and lead him to an inner chamber. 3 Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, ‘Thus says the Lord, (G)I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and flee; do not linger.”
4 So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead. 5 And when he came, behold, the commanders of the army were in council. And he said, “I have a word for you, O commander.” And Jehu said, “To which of us all?” And he said, “To you, O commander.” 6 So he arose and went into the house. And the young man poured the oil on his head, saying to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, (H)I anoint you king over the people of the Lord, over Israel. 7 And you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge (I)on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord. 8 For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, (J)and I will cut off from Ahab (K)every male, (L)bond or free, in Israel. 9 And I will make the house of Ahab like (M)the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like (N)the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. 10 (O)And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her.” Then he opened the door and fled.
11 When Jehu came out to the servants of his master, they said to him, (P)“Is all well? Why did (Q)this mad fellow come to you?” And he said to them, “You know the fellow and his talk.” 12 And they said, “That is not true; tell us now.” And he said, “Thus and so he spoke to me, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord, I anoint you king over Israel.’” 13 Then in haste (R)every man of them took his garment and put it under him on the bare[a] steps, and they blew the trumpet and proclaimed, (S)“Jehu is king.”
Jehu Assassinates Joram and Ahaziah
14 Thus Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. ((T)Now Joram with all Israel had been on guard at Ramoth-gilead against (U)Hazael king of Syria, 15 (V)but King Joram had returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) So Jehu said, “If this is your decision, then let no one slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.” 16 Then Jehu mounted his chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram lay there. And Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to visit Joram.
17 Now the watchman was standing on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he came and said, “I see a company.” And Joram said, “Take a horseman and send to meet them, and let him say, ‘Is it peace?’” 18 So a man on horseback went to meet him and said, “Thus says the king, ‘Is it peace?’” And Jehu said, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and ride behind me.” And the watchman reported, saying, “The messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.” 19 Then he sent out a second horseman, who came to them and said, “Thus the king has said, ‘Is it peace?’” And Jehu answered, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and ride behind me.” 20 Again the watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the driving (W)is like the driving of Jehu (X)the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously.”
21 Joram said, (Y)“Make ready.” And they made ready his chariot. (Z)Then Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah set out, each in his chariot, and went to meet Jehu, and met him (AA)at the property of Naboth the Jezreelite. 22 And when Joram saw Jehu, he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” He answered, “What peace can there be, so long as (AB)the whorings and the sorceries of your mother Jezebel are so many?” 23 Then Joram reined about and fled, saying to Ahaziah, “Treachery, O Ahaziah!” 24 And Jehu drew his bow with his full strength, and shot Joram between the shoulders, so that the arrow pierced his heart, and he sank in his chariot. 25 Jehu said to Bidkar (AC)his aide, “Take him up and throw him (AD)on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember, when you and I rode side by side behind Ahab his father, how (AE)the Lord made this (AF)pronouncement against him: 26 ‘As surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons—declares the Lord—I will repay you on this plot of ground.’ Now therefore take him up and throw him on the plot of ground, in accordance with the word of the Lord.”
27 (AG)When Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled in the direction of Beth-haggan. And Jehu pursued him and said, “Shoot him also.” And they shot him[b] in the chariot at the ascent of Gur, which is by (AH)Ibleam. And he fled to (AI)Megiddo and died there. 28 (AJ)His servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in the city of David.
29 In the (AK)eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab, Ahaziah began to reign over Judah.
Jehu Executes Jezebel
30 When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. And (AL)she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window. 31 And as Jehu entered the gate, she said, (AM)“Is it peace, you Zimri, murderer of your master?” 32 And he lifted up his face to the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked out at him. 33 He said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down. And some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, and they trampled on her. 34 Then he went in and ate and drank. And he said, “See now to this cursed woman and bury her, (AN)for she is a king's daughter.” 35 But when they went to bury her, they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands. 36 When they came back and told him, he said, “This is the word of the Lord, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite: (AO)‘In the territory of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel, 37 and the corpse of Jezebel shall be (AP)as dung on the face of the field in the territory of Jezreel, so that no one can say, This is Jezebel.’”

Jehu Anointed King of Israel
9 The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company(A) of the prophets and said to him, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(B) take this flask of olive oil(C) with you and go to Ramoth Gilead.(D) 2 When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room. 3 Then take the flask and pour the oil(E) on his head and declare, ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run; don’t delay!”
4 So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead. 5 When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said.
“For which of us?” asked Jehu.
“For you, commander,” he replied.
6 Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil(F) on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel. 7 You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge(G) the blood of my servants(H) the prophets and the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel.(I) 8 The whole house(J) of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male(K) in Israel—slave or free.[a] 9 I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam(L) son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha(M) son of Ahijah. 10 As for Jezebel, dogs(N) will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and ran.
11 When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did this maniac(O) come to you?”
“You know the man and the sort of things he says,” Jehu replied.
12 “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.”
Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’”
13 They quickly took their cloaks and spread(P) them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet(Q) and shouted, “Jehu is king!”
Jehu Kills Joram and Ahaziah(R)
14 So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been defending Ramoth Gilead(S) against Hazael king of Aram, 15 but King Joram[b] had returned to Jezreel to recover(T) from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him in the battle with Hazael king of Aram.) Jehu said, “If you desire to make me king, don’t let anyone slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.” 16 Then he got into his chariot and rode to Jezreel, because Joram was resting there and Ahaziah(U) king of Judah had gone down to see him.
17 When the lookout(V) standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu’s troops approaching, he called out, “I see some troops coming.”
“Get a horseman,” Joram ordered. “Send him to meet them and ask, ‘Do you come in peace?(W)’”
18 The horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said, “This is what the king says: ‘Do you come in peace?’”
“What do you have to do with peace?” Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.”
The lookout reported, “The messenger has reached them, but he isn’t coming back.”
19 So the king sent out a second horseman. When he came to them he said, “This is what the king says: ‘Do you come in peace?’”
Jehu replied, “What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me.”
20 The lookout reported, “He has reached them, but he isn’t coming back either. The driving is like(X) that of Jehu son of Nimshi—he drives like a maniac.”
21 “Hitch up my chariot,” Joram ordered. And when it was hitched up, Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah rode out, each in his own chariot, to meet Jehu. They met him at the plot of ground that had belonged to Naboth(Y) the Jezreelite. 22 When Joram saw Jehu he asked, “Have you come in peace, Jehu?”
“How can there be peace,” Jehu replied, “as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel(Z) abound?”
23 Joram turned about and fled, calling out to Ahaziah, “Treachery,(AA) Ahaziah!”
24 Then Jehu drew his bow(AB) and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart and he slumped down in his chariot. 25 Jehu said to Bidkar, his chariot officer, “Pick him up and throw him on the field that belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. Remember how you and I were riding together in chariots behind Ahab his father when the Lord spoke this prophecy(AC) against him: 26 ‘Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth(AD) and the blood of his sons, declares the Lord, and I will surely make you pay for it on this plot of ground, declares the Lord.’[c] Now then, pick him up and throw him on that plot, in accordance with the word of the Lord.”(AE)
27 When Ahaziah king of Judah saw what had happened, he fled up the road to Beth Haggan.[d] Jehu chased him, shouting, “Kill him too!” They wounded him in his chariot on the way up to Gur near Ibleam,(AF) but he escaped to Megiddo(AG) and died there. 28 His servants took him by chariot(AH) to Jerusalem and buried him with his ancestors in his tomb in the City of David. 29 (In the eleventh(AI) year of Joram son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king of Judah.)
Jezebel Killed
30 Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she put on eye makeup,(AJ) arranged her hair and looked out of a window. 31 As Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, you Zimri,(AK) you murderer of your master?”[e]
32 He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked down at him. 33 “Throw her down!” Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot.(AL)
34 Jehu went in and ate and drank. “Take care of that cursed woman,” he said, “and bury her, for she was a king’s daughter.”(AM) 35 But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands. 36 They went back and told Jehu, who said, “This is the word of the Lord that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs(AN) will devour Jezebel’s flesh.[f](AO) 37 Jezebel’s body will be like dung(AP) on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, ‘This is Jezebel.’”
