Jeú é ungido para ser rei de Israel
9 Enquanto isso, o profeta Eliseu chamou um dos jovens profetas e disse:
— Apronte-se e vá até Ramote-Gileade. Leve este jarro de azeite 2 e, quando chegar lá, procure Jeú, filho de Josafá e neto de Ninsi. Leve-o para outra sala, longe dos seus companheiros. 3 Aí derrame azeite na cabeça dele e diga: “O Senhor Deus anuncia que o está ungindo para ser rei de Israel.” Depois saia de lá o mais depressa que puder.
4 Então o jovem profeta foi até Ramote-Gileade 5 e lá encontrou reunidos os oficiais do exército. Ele disse:
— Eu trouxe uma mensagem para o senhor.
Jeú perguntou:
— Com qual de nós você está falando?
— Com o senhor mesmo! — respondeu ele.
6 Então os dois foram para uma sala, e o jovem profeta derramou azeite na cabeça de Jeú e disse:
— O Senhor, o Deus de Israel, anuncia isto: “Eu estou ungindo você para ser o rei do meu povo de Israel. 7 Você deve matar o seu chefe, o rei Jorão, filho de Acabe, para que assim eu castigue Jezabel por haver assassinado os meus profetas e os meus outros servos. 8 Toda a família e todos os descendentes de Acabe devem morrer. Eu vou acabar com todos os homens da família dele, tanto os jovens como os velhos. 9 Vou tratar a família dele como tratei as famílias do rei Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, e do rei Baasa, filho de Aías. 10 Jezabel não será sepultada; o seu corpo será comido pelos cachorros perto da cidade de Jezreel.”
Depois de dizer isso, o jovem profeta saiu da sala e fugiu.
11 Jeú voltou para o lugar onde estavam os seus companheiros, e eles perguntaram:
— Tudo bem? O que aquele louco queria com você?
— Vocês sabem muito bem o que ele queria! — respondeu Jeú.
12 — Não sabemos, não! — disseram eles. — Conte o que ele disse.
Jeú contou:
— Ele me disse que o Senhor Deus anuncia isto: “Eu estou ungindo você, Jeú, para ser o rei de Israel.”
13 No mesmo instante, eles estenderam as suas capas sobre os degraus para Jeú passar, tocaram a corneta e gritaram:
— Jeú é o rei!
Jeú mata Jorão
14-15 Então Jeú fez uma revolta contra o rei Jorão. Jorão estava em Jezreel tratando dos ferimentos que havia recebido em Ramote-Gileade, na batalha contra o rei Hazael, da Síria. Por isso, Jeú disse aos seus colegas oficiais:
— Se vocês estão do meu lado, não deixem que ninguém saia escondido de Ramote-Gileade para ir avisar os moradores de Jezreel.
16 Então subiu no seu carro de guerra e saiu para Jezreel. Jorão ainda não tinha sarado, e o rei Acazias, de Judá, se encontrava ali fazendo-lhe uma visita.
17 Um guarda que estava na torre de vigia de Jezreel viu Jeú e os seus soldados chegando e gritou:
— Vejo alguns homens chegando a cavalo!
Aí Jorão disse:
— Mande um homem a cavalo para descobrir se são amigos ou inimigos.
18 O mensageiro foi encontrar-se com Jeú e disse:
— O rei quer saber se o senhor vem como amigo.
— Isso não é da sua conta! — respondeu Jeú. E mandou:
— Passe para trás de mim.
O guarda que estava na torre de vigia contou que o mensageiro havia se encontrado com o grupo, porém não estava voltando. 19 Outro mensageiro foi mandado e fez a mesma pergunta a Jeú. E novamente ele respondeu: “Isso não é da sua conta! Passe para trás de mim.”
20 Novamente o guarda contou que o mensageiro havia chegado até o grupo, porém não estava voltando. E disse também:
— O chefe do grupo está guiando o seu carro de guerra como um louco, exatamente como Jeú faz!
21 — Aprontem o meu carro de guerra! — ordenou o rei Jorão.
O carro foi preparado, e então ele e o rei Acazias saíram, cada um no seu carro, para ir ao encontro de Jeú. Eles se encontraram com ele no campo que havia sido de Nabote. Aí Jorão perguntou:
22 — Você veio como amigo?
Jeú respondeu:
— Como podemos ser amigos quando ainda continuam as feitiçarias e a adoração de ídolos que Jezabel, a sua mãe, começou?
23 Então Jorão virou o seu carro e fugiu, gritando para Acazias:
— É uma traição, Acazias!
24 Mas Jeú puxou a corda do seu arco com toda a força e atirou uma flecha, que feriu Jorão nas costas. A flecha atravessou o coração, e ele caiu morto no seu carro de guerra. 25 Aí Jeú disse a Bidcar, o seu ajudante:
— Pegue o corpo dele e jogue no campo que era de Nabote. Lembre que, quando nós dois estávamos juntos andando a cavalo atrás de Acabe, pai de Jorão, o Senhor Deus disse estas palavras contra Acabe: 26 “Ontem eu vi o assassinato de Nabote e dos seus filhos. E prometo que castigarei você aqui, neste mesmo campo.”
E Jeú ordenou ao seu ajudante:
— Pegue o corpo de Jorão e jogue no campo que era de Nabote, para que assim seja cumprida a promessa de Deus, o Senhor.
A morte de Acazias
27 O rei Acazias, de Judá, viu o que tinha acontecido e fugiu no seu carro na direção da cidade de Bete-Hagã. Mas Jeú o perseguiu e disse aos seus soldados:
— Matem Acazias também!
E eles o feriram quando ele ia no seu carro pela estrada que sobe para Gur, perto da cidade de Ibleão. Mas Acazias conseguiu fugir até a cidade de Megido, onde morreu. 28 Os seus oficiais levaram o corpo de volta para Jerusalém e o sepultaram nos túmulos dos reis, na Cidade de Davi.
29 Acazias havia começado a reinar em Judá no ano onze do reinado de Jorão, filho de Acabe, em Israel.
Jezabel é morta
30 Jeú chegou a Jezreel, e Jezabel ficou sabendo disso. Então pintou os olhos, penteou os cabelos e ficou numa janela do palácio, olhando para a rua. 31 Quando Jeú entrou pelo portão do palácio, ela gritou:
— Olá, Zinri, assassino do seu senhor!
32 Jeú olhou para cima e gritou:
— Quem está do meu lado?
Dois ou três oficiais do palácio olharam para ele de uma janela, 33 e Jeú lhes disse:
— Joguem essa mulher daí!
Eles a jogaram, e o sangue dela respingou a parede e os cavalos. Jeú passou por cima dela com os cavalos e o carro 34 e entrou no palácio. E, depois que comeu e bebeu, disse:
— Peguem aquela maldita e a sepultem. Afinal de contas, ela é filha de um rei.
35 Mas os homens que saíram para sepultá-la só encontraram a caveira e os ossos das mãos e pés. 36 Então eles voltaram, contaram a Jeú, e este disse:
— Foi isto o que o Senhor Deus disse que ia acontecer quando falou por meio do seu servo Elias, da cidade de Tisbé: “Os cachorros comerão o corpo de Jezabel perto da cidade de Jezreel. 37 Os seus restos serão espalhados ali como esterco, e assim ninguém poderá dizer: ‘Esta era Jezabel.’ ”

Jeú é ungido rei de Israel e mata a Jorão e a Jezabel
9 Então, o profeta Eliseu chamou um dos filhos dos profetas e lhe disse: Cinge os teus lombos, e toma esta almotolia de azeite na tua mão, e vai-te a Ramote-Gileade. 2 E, chegando lá, vê onde está Jeú, filho de Josafá, filho de Ninsi; e entra, e faze que ele se levante do meio de seus irmãos, e leva-o à câmara interior. 3 E toma a almotolia de azeite, e derrama-o sobre a sua cabeça, e dize: Assim diz o Senhor: Ungi-te rei sobre Israel. Então, abre a porta, e foge, e não te detenhas.
4 Foi, pois, o rapaz, o jovem profeta, a Ramote-Gileade. 5 E, entrando ele, eis que os capitães do exército estavam assentados ali; e disse: Capitão, tenho uma palavra que te dizer. E disse Jeú. A qual de todos nós? E disse: A ti, capitão! 6 Então, se levantou, e entrou na casa, e derramou o azeite sobre a sua cabeça, e lhe disse: Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Israel: Ungi-te rei sobre o povo do Senhor, sobre Israel. 7 E ferirás a casa de Acabe, teu senhor, para que eu vingue o sangue de meus servos, os profetas, e o sangue de todos os servos do Senhor da mão de Jezabel. 8 E toda a casa de Acabe perecerá; e destruirei de Acabe todo varão, tanto o encerrado como o livre em Israel. 9 Porque à casa de Acabe hei de fazer como à casa de Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, e como à casa de Baasa, filho de Aías. 10 E os cães comerão a Jezabel no pedaço de campo de Jezreel; não haverá quem a enterre. Então, abriu a porta e fugiu.
11 E, saindo Jeú aos servos de seu senhor, disseram-lhe: Vai tudo bem? Por que veio a ti este louco? E ele lhes disse: Bem conheceis o homem e o seu falar. 12 Mas eles disseram: É mentira; agora, faze-no-lo saber. E disse: Assim e assim me falou, dizendo: Assim diz o Senhor: Ungi-te rei sobre Israel. 13 Então, se apressaram, e tomou cada um a sua veste e a pôs debaixo dele, no mais alto degrau; e tocaram a buzina e disseram: Jeú reina.
14 Assim, Jeú, filho de Josafá, filho de Ninsi, conspirou contra Jorão. Tinha, porém, Jorão cercado a Ramote-Gileade, ele e todo o Israel, por causa de Hazael, rei da Síria. 15 Porém o rei Jorão voltou para se curar em Jezreel das feridas que os siros lhe fizeram, quando pelejou contra Hazael, rei da Síria. E disse Jeú: Se é da vossa vontade, ninguém saia da cidade, nem escape, para ir anunciar isso em Jezreel. 16 Então, Jeú subiu a um carro e foi-se a Jezreel, porque Jorão estava deitado ali; e também Acazias, rei de Judá, descera para ver a Jorão.
17 E o atalaia estava na torre de Jezreel, e viu a tropa de Jeú, que vinha, e disse: Vejo uma tropa. Então, disse Jorão: Toma um cavaleiro e envia-lho ao encontro; e diga: Há paz? 18 E o cavaleiro lhe foi ao encontro e disse: Assim diz o rei: Há paz? E disse Jeú: Que tens tu que fazer com a paz? Passa para trás de mim. E o atalaia o fez saber, dizendo: Chegou a eles o mensageiro, porém não volta. 19 Então, enviou outro cavaleiro; e, chegando este a eles, disse: Assim diz o rei: Há paz? E disse Jeú: Que tens tu que fazer com a paz? Passa para trás de mim. 20 E o atalaia o fez saber, dizendo: Também este chegou a eles, porém não volta; e o andar parece como o andar de Jeú, filho de Ninsi, porque anda furiosamente.
21 Então, disse Jorão: Aparelha o carro. E aparelharam o seu carro. E saiu Jorão, rei de Israel, e Acazias, rei de Judá, cada um em seu carro, e saíram ao encontro de Jeú, e o acharam no pedaço de campo de Nabote, o jezreelita. 22 E sucedeu que, vendo Jorão a Jeú, disse: Há paz, Jeú? E disse ele: Que paz, enquanto as prostituições da tua mãe Jezabel e as suas feitiçarias são tantas? 23 Então, Jorão voltou as mãos, e fugiu, e disse a Acazias: Traição há, Acazias. 24 Mas Jeú entesou o seu arco com toda a força e feriu a Jorão entre os braços, e a flecha lhe saiu pelo coração; e caiu no seu carro. 25 Então, Jeú disse a Bidcar, seu capitão: Toma-o, lança-o no pedaço do campo de Nabote, o jezreelita; pois, lembra-te de que, indo eu e tu juntos a cavalo após Acabe, seu pai, o Senhor pôs sobre ele esta carga, dizendo: 26 Por certo que, se eu não visse ontem à tarde o sangue de Nabote e o sangue de seus filhos, diz o Senhor, também não to pagaria neste pedaço de campo, diz o Senhor. Agora, pois, toma-o e lança-o neste pedaço de campo, conforme a palavra do Senhor. 27 O que vendo Acazias, rei de Judá, fugiu pelo caminho da casa do jardim, porém Jeú seguiu após ele e disse: Feri também a este no carro à subida de Gur, que está junto a Ibleão. E fugiu para Megido e morreu ali. 28 E seus servos o levaram num carro a Jerusalém e o sepultaram na sua sepultura, junto a seus pais, na Cidade de Davi. 29 E, no ano undécimo de Jorão, filho de Acabe, começou Acazias a reinar sobre Judá.
30 E Jeú veio a Jezreel, o que ouvindo Jezabel, se pintou em volta dos olhos, e enfeitou a sua cabeça, e olhou pela janela. 31 E, entrando Jeú pelas portas, disse ela: Teve paz Zinri, que matou a seu senhor? 32 E levantou ele o rosto para a janela e disse: Quem é comigo? Quem? E dois ou três eunucos olharam para ele. 33 Então, disse ele: Lançai-a de alto abaixo. E lançaram-na de alto abaixo; e foram salpicados com o seu sangue a parede e os cavalos, e Jeú a atropelou. 34 Entrando ele, pois, e havendo comido e bebido, disse: Olhai por aquela maldita e sepultai-a, porque é filha de rei. 35 E foram para a sepultar; porém não acharam dela senão somente a caveira, e os pés, e as palmas das mãos. 36 Então, voltaram e lho fizeram saber; e ele disse: Esta é a palavra do Senhor, a qual falou pelo ministério de Elias, o tisbita, seu servo, dizendo: No pedaço do campo de Jezreel, os cães comerão a carne de Jezabel. 37 E o cadáver de Jezabel será como esterco sobre o campo, no pedaço de Jezreel, que se não possa dizer: Esta é Jezabel.

Jehu Is Anointed as King of Israel
9 Elisha the prophet sent for a man from the group of the prophets. Elisha said to him, “Tuck your coat into your belt. Take this bottle of olive oil with you. Go to Ramoth Gilead. 2 When you get there, look for Jehu. He’s the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to Jehu. Get him away from his companions. Take him into an inside room. 3 Then get the bottle. Pour the oil on his head. Announce to him, ‘The Lord says, “I anoint you as king over Israel.” ’ After that, open the door and run away. Do it quickly!”
4 So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead. 5 When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. “Commander, I have a message for you,” he said.
“For which one of us?” asked Jehu.
“For you, commander,” he replied.
6 Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil on Jehu’s head. He announced, “The Lord is the God of Israel. He says, ‘I am anointing you as king over the Lord’s people Israel. 7 You must destroy the royal house of your master Ahab. I will pay them back for spilling the blood of my servants the prophets. I will also pay them back for the blood of all the Lord’s servants that Jezebel spilled. 8 The whole house of Ahab will die out. I will destroy every male in Israel who is related to Ahab. It does not matter whether they are slaves or free. 9 I will make Ahab’s royal house like the house of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. I will make it like the house of Baasha, the son of Ahijah. 10 Dogs will eat up Jezebel on a piece of land at Jezreel. No one will bury her.’ ” Then the prophet opened the door and ran away.
11 Jehu went out to where the other officers were. One of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did that crazy man come to you?”
“You know the man. You know the kinds of things he says,” Jehu replied.
12 “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.”
Jehu said, “Here is what he told me. He announced, ‘The Lord says, “I am anointing you as king over Israel.” ’ ”
13 The officers quickly grabbed their coats. They spread them out under Jehu on the bare steps of the house. Then they blew a trumpet. They shouted, “Jehu is king!”
Jehu Kills Joram and Ahaziah
14 Jehu was the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Jehu made plans against Joram. During that time Joram and Israel’s whole army had been guarding Ramoth Gilead. They had been guarding it against Hazael, the king of Aram. 15 But King Joram had returned to Jezreel. He had gone there to give his wounds time to heal. The soldiers of Aram had wounded him in his battle against Hazael, the king of Aram. Jehu said to his men, “Do you want to make me king? If you do, don’t let anyone sneak out of the city. Don’t let them go and tell the news in Jezreel.” 16 Then Jehu got into his chariot. He rode off to Jezreel. Joram was resting there. And Ahaziah, the king of Judah, had gone down to see him.
17 A lookout was standing on the roof of the tower in Jezreel. He saw Jehu’s troops approaching. So he called out, “I see some troops coming.”
“Get a horseman,” Joram ordered. “Send him to ride out to them. Have him ask, ‘Are you coming in peace?’ ”
18 The horseman rode out to where Jehu was. He said, “The king asks, ‘Are you coming in peace?’ ”
“What do you know about peace?” Jehu answered. “Get in line behind me.”
The lookout reported, “The messenger has reached them. But he isn’t coming back.”
19 So the king sent out a second horseman. When he came to them, he said, “The king asks, ‘Are you coming in peace?’ ”
Jehu replied, “What do you know about peace? Get in line behind me.”
20 The lookout reported, “The second messenger has reached them. But he isn’t coming back either. The one driving the chariot drives like Jehu, the son of Nimshi. He’s driving like a crazy person.”
21 “Get my chariot ready,” King Joram ordered. When it was ready, he rode out. Ahaziah, the king of Judah, rode out with him. Each of them was in his own chariot. They both went to meet Jehu. They met him at the piece of land that had belonged to Naboth from Jezreel. 22 When Joram saw Jehu he asked, “Have you come here in peace, Jehu?”
“Your mother Jezebel worships statues of gods,” Jehu replied. “She also worships evil powers. The evil things she does have spread everywhere. As long as all of that goes on, how can there be peace?”
23 Joram turned around and tried to get away. He called out, “It’s treason, Ahaziah!”
24 Then Jehu shot an arrow at Joram. It hit him between the shoulders. It went through his heart. He sank down slowly in his chariot. 25 Jehu spoke to Bidkar, his chariot officer. Jehu said, “Pick Joram up. Throw him on the field that belonged to Naboth from Jezreel. Remember how you and I were riding together in chariots behind Joram’s father Ahab? It was when the Lord spoke this prophecy against him. The Lord announced, 26 ‘Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons. You can be sure that I will make you pay for it on this piece of land.’ So pick Joram up. Throw him on that piece of land. That’s what the Lord said would happen.”
27 Ahaziah, the king of Judah, saw what had happened. So he tried to get away. He went up the road toward Beth Haggan. Jehu chased him. He shouted, “Kill him too!” Jehu’s men wounded Ahaziah in his chariot. It happened on the way up to Gur near Ibleam. But Ahaziah escaped to Megiddo. And that’s where he died. 28 Ahaziah’s servants took him to Jerusalem in his chariot. They buried him in his family tomb in the City of David. 29 Ahaziah had become king of Judah. It was in the 11th year of Joram, the son of Ahab.
Jehu Kills Jezebel
30 Jehu went to Jezreel. Jezebel heard about it. So she put makeup on her eyes and fixed her hair. Then she looked out of a window. 31 Jehu entered the gate below. Jezebel said to him, “You are just like Zimri. You murdered your master. Have you come here in peace?”
32 Jehu looked up at the window. “Who is on my side?” he called out. “Who?” Two or three officials looked down at him. 33 “Throw her down!” Jehu said. So they threw her down. Some of her blood splashed on the wall. Some of it splashed on Jehu’s chariot horses as they ran over her.
34 Jehu went inside. He ate and drank. “The Lord put a curse on that woman,” he said. “Take proper care of her body. Bury her. After all, she was a king’s daughter.” 35 So they went out to bury her. But all they found was her head, feet and hands. 36 They went back and reported it to Jehu. He told them, “That’s what the Lord said would happen. He announced it through his servant Elijah, who was from Tishbe. He said, ‘On a piece of land at Jezreel, dogs will eat up Jezebel’s body. 37 Her body will end up as garbage on that piece of land. So no one will be able to say, “Here’s where Jezebel is buried.” ’ ”

Jehu Anointed King of Israel
9 The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company(A) of the prophets and said to him, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(B) take this flask of olive oil(C) with you and go to Ramoth Gilead.(D) 2 When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room. 3 Then take the flask and pour the oil(E) on his head and declare, ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run; don’t delay!”
4 So the young prophet went to Ramoth Gilead. 5 When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said.
“For which of us?” asked Jehu.
“For you, commander,” he replied.
6 Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil(F) on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel. 7 You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge(G) the blood of my servants(H) the prophets and the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel.(I) 8 The whole house(J) of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male(K) in Israel—slave or free.[a] 9 I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam(L) son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha(M) son of Ahijah. 10 As for Jezebel, dogs(N) will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and ran.
11 When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did this maniac(O) come to you?”
“You know the man and the sort of things he says,” Jehu replied.
12 “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.”
Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’”
13 They quickly took their cloaks and spread(P) them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet(Q) and shouted, “Jehu is king!”
Jehu Kills Joram and Ahaziah(R)
14 So Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been defending Ramoth Gilead(S) against Hazael king of Aram, 15 but King Joram[b] had returned to Jezreel to recover(T) from the wounds the Arameans had inflicted on him in the battle with Hazael king of Aram.) Jehu said, “If you desire to make me king, don’t let anyone slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.” 16 Then he got into his chariot and rode to Jezreel, because Joram was resting there and Ahaziah(U) king of Judah had gone down to see him.
17 When the lookout(V) standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu’s troops approaching, he called out, “I see some troops coming.”
“Get a horseman,” Joram ordered. “Send him to meet them and ask, ‘Do you come in peace?(W)’”
18 The horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said, “This is what the king says: ‘Do you come in peace?’”
“What do you have to do with peace?” Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.”
The lookout reported, “The messenger has reached them, but he isn’t coming back.”
19 So the king sent out a second horseman. When he came to them he said, “This is what the king says: ‘Do you come in peace?’”
Jehu replied, “What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me.”
20 The lookout reported, “He has reached them, but he isn’t coming back either. The driving is like(X) that of Jehu son of Nimshi—he drives like a maniac.”
21 “Hitch up my chariot,” Joram ordered. And when it was hitched up, Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah rode out, each in his own chariot, to meet Jehu. They met him at the plot of ground that had belonged to Naboth(Y) the Jezreelite. 22 When Joram saw Jehu he asked, “Have you come in peace, Jehu?”
“How can there be peace,” Jehu replied, “as long as all the idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel(Z) abound?”
23 Joram turned about and fled, calling out to Ahaziah, “Treachery,(AA) Ahaziah!”
24 Then Jehu drew his bow(AB) and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart and he slumped down in his chariot. 25 Jehu said to Bidkar, his chariot officer, “Pick him up and throw him on the field that belonged to Naboth the Jezreelite. Remember how you and I were riding together in chariots behind Ahab his father when the Lord spoke this prophecy(AC) against him: 26 ‘Yesterday I saw the blood of Naboth(AD) and the blood of his sons, declares the Lord, and I will surely make you pay for it on this plot of ground, declares the Lord.’[c] Now then, pick him up and throw him on that plot, in accordance with the word of the Lord.”(AE)
27 When Ahaziah king of Judah saw what had happened, he fled up the road to Beth Haggan.[d] Jehu chased him, shouting, “Kill him too!” They wounded him in his chariot on the way up to Gur near Ibleam,(AF) but he escaped to Megiddo(AG) and died there. 28 His servants took him by chariot(AH) to Jerusalem and buried him with his ancestors in his tomb in the City of David. 29 (In the eleventh(AI) year of Joram son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king of Judah.)
Jezebel Killed
30 Then Jehu went to Jezreel. When Jezebel heard about it, she put on eye makeup,(AJ) arranged her hair and looked out of a window. 31 As Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, you Zimri,(AK) you murderer of your master?”[e]
32 He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked down at him. 33 “Throw her down!” Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot.(AL)
34 Jehu went in and ate and drank. “Take care of that cursed woman,” he said, “and bury her, for she was a king’s daughter.”(AM) 35 But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands. 36 They went back and told Jehu, who said, “This is the word of the Lord that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs(AN) will devour Jezebel’s flesh.[f](AO) 37 Jezebel’s body will be like dung(AP) on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, ‘This is Jezebel.’”
