A doença de Ezequias
(2 Cr 32.24; Is 38.1-8, 21-22)
20 Ezequias adoeceu gravemente, ficando às portas da morte. O profeta Isaías veio visitá-lo. “Põe todos os teus assuntos em ordem”, disse-lhe Isaías, “e prepara-te para morreres. O Senhor manda dizer-te que não recuperarás a saúde.”
2 Ezequias voltou-se para o lado da parede e orou assim ao Senhor: 3 “Ó Senhor, lembra-te de como eu tenho sido honesto e sincero contigo e como procurei obedecer a tudo o que tens dito!” E começou a chorar intensamente.
4 Antes que o profeta tivesse deixado o pátio do palácio, o Senhor tornou a falar-lhe: 5 “Volta para trás e vai ter com Ezequias, o chefe do meu povo; diz-lhe que o Senhor, o Deus do seu antepassado David, ouviu a sua oração e viu as lágrimas que verteu. Curá-lo-ei; daqui a três dias levantar-se-á da cama e estará no templo! 6 Acrescentarei 15 anos à sua vida e salvarei esta cidade do rei da Assíria. Tudo isto será feito para glória do meu próprio nome e por amor do meu servo David.”
7 Isaías mandou preparar uma pomada de figos e aplicou-a sobre a chaga do rei. E ele sarou.
8 Entretanto, o rei Ezequias perguntou a Isaías: “Que sinal me dará o Senhor como prova de que me curará e de que estarei em condições de ir ao templo daqui a três dias?”
9 Isaías respondeu: “O Senhor vai dar-te uma prova. O que é que preferes? Que a sombra do relógio de Sol avance 10 graus ou que recue 10 graus?”
10 “A sombra avançar, isso é o seu movimento normal. Faz com que ela recue.” 11 Então o profeta Isaías pediu ao Senhor que fizesse isso e, com efeito, a sombra recuou 10 graus no relógio de sol de Acaz!
Os embaixadores da Babilónia
(Is 39.1-8)
12 Pouco tempo depois, Merodaque-Baladã, filho do rei Baladã da Babilónia, enviou embaixadores com cartas e um presente a Ezequias, porque tinha ouvido dizer que estivera muito doente. 13 Ezequias apreciou muito este gesto e concedeu-lhes uma audiência, na qual levou os delegados da Babilónia a visitar o seu palácio, mostrando-lhes inclusivamente a casa do tesouro, cheia de peças de prata e de ouro, de especiarias raras e dos melhores perfumes. Levou-os ainda à casa das armas e mostrou-lhes tudo; não lhes escondeu nada; abriu-lhes todas as portas.
14 Então o profeta Isaías foi ter com o rei e disse-lhe: “Donde vieram esses homens? Que foi que te disseram?” Ezequias respondeu: “Vieram de muito longe! Vieram da Babilónia!”
15 “Que foi que eles viram do teu palácio?”, perguntou Isaías. “Viram tudo! Mostrei-lhes todos os meus tesouros.”
16 “Ouve-me!”, disse-lhe Isaías. “Dá atenção à palavra do Senhor: 17 Há de vir a altura em que tudo neste palácio será transportado para a Babilónia. Todos os tesouros dos teus antepassados serão levados; nada ficará aqui. 18 Alguns dos teus filhos até serão feitos escravos. Sim, eunucos do palácio do rei da Babilónia.”
19 “Essa é uma boa notícia da parte do Senhor”, respondeu Ezequias. É que pensou: “Pelo menos, haverá paz e segurança durante a minha vida!”
O fim do reinado de Ezequias
(2 Cr 32.32-33)
20 Os outros acontecimentos da história de Ezequias e os seus feitos, incluindo o poço e a conduta que mandou construir para trazer água à cidade, estão escritos no Livro das Crónicas dos Reis de Judá. 21 Quando faleceu, o seu filho Manassés ascendeu ao trono.

Ezequias adoece
20 Naqueles dias, adoeceu Ezequias de morte; e o profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz, veio a ele e lhe disse: Assim diz o Senhor: Ordena a tua casa, porque morrerás e não viverás. 2 Então, virou o rosto para a parede e orou ao Senhor, dizendo: 3 Ah! Senhor! Sê servido de te lembrar de que andei diante de ti em verdade e com o coração perfeito e fiz o que era reto aos teus olhos. E chorou Ezequias muitíssimo. 4 Sucedeu, pois, que, não havendo Isaías ainda saído do meio do pátio, veio a ele a palavra do Senhor, dizendo: 5 Volta e dize a Ezequias, chefe do meu povo: Assim diz o Senhor, Deus de Davi, teu pai: Ouvi a tua oração e vi as tuas lágrimas; eis que eu te sararei; ao terceiro dia subirás à Casa do Senhor. 6 E acrescentarei aos teus dias quinze anos e das mãos do rei da Assíria te livrarei, a ti e a esta cidade; e ampararei esta cidade por amor de mim e por amor de Davi, meu servo. 7 Disse mais Isaías: Tomai uma pasta de figos. E a tomaram e a puseram sobre a chaga; e ele sarou. 8 E Ezequias disse a Isaías: Qual é o sinal de que o Senhor me sarará e de que, ao terceiro dia, subirei à Casa do Senhor? 9 E disse Isaías: Isto te será sinal, da parte do Senhor, de que o Senhor cumprirá a palavra que disse: Adiantar-se-á a sombra dez graus ou voltará dez graus atrás? 10 Então, disse Ezequias: É fácil que a sombra decline dez graus; não aconteça isso, mas volte a sombra dez graus. 11 Então, o profeta Isaías clamou ao Senhor; e fez voltar a sombra dez graus, pelos graus que já tinha declinado no relógio de sol de Acaz.
A embaixada do rei de Babilônia
12 Naquele tempo, enviou Merodaque-Baladã, filho de Baladã, rei de Babilônia, cartas e um presente a Ezequias; porque ouvira que Ezequias tinha estado doente. 13 E Ezequias lhes deu ouvidos e lhes mostrou toda a casa de seu tesouro, a prata, e o ouro, e as especiarias, e os melhores unguentos, e a sua casa de armas, e tudo quanto se achou nos seus tesouros; coisa nenhuma houve que lhes não mostrasse, nem em sua casa, nem em todo o seu domínio. 14 Então, o profeta Isaías veio ao rei Ezequias e lhe disse: Que disseram aqueles homens, e de onde vieram a ti? E disse Ezequias: De um país mui remoto vieram, de Babilônia. 15 E disse ele: Que viram em tua casa? E disse Ezequias: Tudo quanto há em minha casa viram; coisa nenhuma há nos meus tesouros que eu lhes não mostrasse.
16 Então, disse Isaías a Ezequias: Ouve a palavra do Senhor. 17 Eis que vêm dias em que tudo quanto houver em tua casa, com que entesouraram teus pais até ao dia de hoje, será levado para Babilônia; não ficará coisa alguma, disse o Senhor. 18 E ainda até de teus filhos, que procederem de ti, e que tu gerares tomarão, para que sejam eunucos no paço do rei de Babilônia. 19 Então, disse Ezequias a Isaías: Boa é a palavra do Senhor que disseste. Disse mais: E não haverá, pois, em meus dias paz e verdade?
20 Ora, o mais dos atos de Ezequias, e todo o seu poder, e como fez a piscina e o aqueduto, e como fez vir a água à cidade, porventura, não estão escritos no livro das Crônicas dos Reis de Judá? 21 E Ezequias dormiu com seus pais; e Manassés, seu filho, reinou em seu lugar.

Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery
20 (A)In those days Hezekiah became [a]mortally ill. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘(B)Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.’” 2 Then he turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, saying, 3 “(C)Remember now, O Lord, I beseech You, (D)how I have walked before You in truth and with a whole heart and have done what is good in Your sight.” And (E)Hezekiah wept [b]bitterly. 4 Before Isaiah had gone out of the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 5 “Return and say to (F)Hezekiah the leader of My people, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of your father David, “(G)I have heard your prayer, (H)I have seen your tears; behold, I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the Lord. 6 I will add fifteen years to your [c]life, and I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria; and (I)I will defend this city for My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.”’” 7 Then Isaiah said, “Take a cake of figs.” And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.
8 Now Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the Lord will heal me, and that I shall go up to the house of the Lord the third day?” 9 Isaiah said, “(J)This shall be the sign to you from the Lord, that the Lord will do the thing that He has spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten steps or go back ten steps?” 10 So Hezekiah [d]answered, “It is easy for the shadow to decline ten steps; no, but let the shadow turn backward ten steps.” 11 Isaiah the prophet cried to the Lord, and (K)He brought the shadow on the [e]stairway back ten steps by which it had gone down on the [f]stairway of Ahaz.
Hezekiah Shows Babylon His Treasures
12 (L)At that time [g]Berodach-baladan a son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah, for he heard that Hezekiah had been sick. 13 Hezekiah listened to them, and showed them (M)all his treasure house, the silver and the gold and the spices and the precious oil and the house of his armor and all that was found in his treasuries. There was nothing in his house nor in all his dominion that Hezekiah did not show them. 14 Then Isaiah the prophet came to King Hezekiah and said to him, “What did these men say, and from where have they come to you?” And Hezekiah said, “They have come from a far country, from Babylon.” 15 He said, “What have they seen in your house?” So Hezekiah [h]answered, “They have seen all that is in my house; there is nothing among my treasuries that I have not shown them.”
16 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord. 17 ‘Behold, the days are coming when (N)all that is in your house, and all that your fathers have laid up in store to this day will be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left,’ says the Lord. 18 ‘Some (O)of your sons who shall issue from you, whom you will beget, will be taken away; and they will become (P)officials in the palace of the king of Babylon.’” 19 Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord which you have spoken is (Q)good.” For he [i]thought, “Is it not so, if there will be peace and truth in my days?”
20 (R)Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and all his might, and how he (S)made the pool and the conduit and brought water into the city, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 21 (T)So Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and Manasseh his son became king in his place.

Hezekiah’s Illness(A)
20 In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, “This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.”
2 Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3 “Remember,(B) Lord, how I have walked(C) before you faithfully(D) and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
4 Before Isaiah had left the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him: 5 “Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard(E) your prayer and seen your tears;(F) I will heal you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord. 6 I will add fifteen years to your life. And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend(G) this city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.’”
7 Then Isaiah said, “Prepare a poultice of figs.” They did so and applied it to the boil,(H) and he recovered.
8 Hezekiah had asked Isaiah, “What will be the sign that the Lord will heal me and that I will go up to the temple of the Lord on the third day from now?”
9 Isaiah answered, “This is the Lord’s sign(I) to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: Shall the shadow go forward ten steps, or shall it go back ten steps?”
10 “It is a simple(J) matter for the shadow to go forward ten steps,” said Hezekiah. “Rather, have it go back ten steps.”
11 Then the prophet Isaiah called on the Lord, and the Lord made the shadow go back(K) the ten steps it had gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.
Envoys From Babylon(L)(M)
12 At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of Hezekiah’s illness. 13 Hezekiah received the envoys and showed them all that was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold, the spices and the fine olive oil—his armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.
14 Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, “What did those men say, and where did they come from?”
“From a distant land,” Hezekiah replied. “They came from Babylon.”
15 The prophet asked, “What did they see in your palace?”
“They saw everything in my palace,” Hezekiah said. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
16 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord: 17 The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your predecessors have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon.(N) Nothing will be left, says the Lord. 18 And some of your descendants,(O) your own flesh and blood who will be born to you, will be taken away, and they will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.”(P)
19 “The word of the Lord you have spoken is good,” Hezekiah replied. For he thought, “Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?”
20 As for the other events of Hezekiah’s reign, all his achievements and how he made the pool(Q) and the tunnel(R) by which he brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 21 Hezekiah rested with his ancestors. And Manasseh his son succeeded him as king.
