Jeoacaz rei de Israel

A morte de Eliseu

18 “Agora”, continou o profeta, “pega nas outras setas e bate com elas no chão.” O rei pegou nelas e bateu com elas três vezes no chão. 19 Eliseu ficou zangado: “Devias ter batido no chão cinco ou seis vezes”, disse-lhe. “Poderias vir a derrotar os arameus até ficarem completamente destruídos; sendo assim, serás vitorioso apenas três vezes.”

20 Eliseu faleceu e foi sepultado.

Nesses dias, bandos de moabitas invadiam a terra na primavera. 21 Uma vez, uns quantos homens que estavam a fazer o enterro de um amigo depararam-se com um desses bandos de marginais e lançaram apressadamente o corpo para dentro do túmulo de Eliseu. Logo que tocou nos ossos de Eliseu, o morto reviveu e pôs-se em pé!

22 O rei Hazael tinha oprimido a Israel durante todo o reinado de Jeoacaz. 23 Mas o Senhor teve compaixão do povo israelita e, por isso, este não foi completamente destruído. Deus não só teve misericórdia deles, como foi fiel à aliança que fez com Abraão, Isaque e Jacob. Essa é a razão por que ainda se mantêm vivos.

Jehoahaz’s Reign over Israel

13 In the twenty-third year of the reign of Judah’s King Joash son of Ahaziah, Jehu’s son Jehoahaz became king over Israel. He reigned in Samaria for seventeen years. 2 He did evil in the sight of[a] the Lord. He continued in[b] the sinful ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat who had encouraged Israel to sin; he did not repudiate those sins.[c] 3 The Lord was furious with[d] Israel and handed them over to[e] King Hazael of Syria and to Hazael’s son Ben Hadad for many years.[f]

4 Jehoahaz asked for the Lord’s mercy,[g] and the Lord responded favorably,[h] for he saw that Israel was oppressed by the king of Syria.[i] 5 The Lord provided a deliverer[j] for Israel, and they were freed from Syria’s power.[k] The Israelites once more lived in security.[l] 6 But they did not repudiate[m] the sinful ways of the family[n] of Jeroboam, who encouraged Israel to sin; they continued in those sins.[o] There was even an Asherah pole[p] standing in Samaria. 7 Jehoahaz had no army left[q] except for 50 horsemen, 10 chariots, and 10,000 foot soldiers. The king of Syria had destroyed his troops[r] and trampled on them as dust.[s]

8 The rest of the events of Jehoahaz’s reign, including all his accomplishments and successes, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Israel.[t] 9 Jehoahaz passed away[u] and was buried[v] in Samaria. His son Jehoash[w] replaced him as king.

Jehoash’s Reign over Israel

10 In the thirty-seventh year of King Jehoash’s reign over Judah, Jehoahaz’s son Jehoash became king over Israel. He reigned in Samaria for sixteen years. 11 He did evil in the sight of[x] the Lord. He did not repudiate[y] the sinful ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat who encouraged Israel to sin; he continued in those sins.[z] 12 The rest of the events of Jehoash’s[aa] reign, including all his accomplishments and his successful war with King Amaziah of Judah, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Israel.[ab] 13 Jehoash passed away[ac] and Jeroboam succeeded him on the throne.[ad] Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.

Elisha Makes One Final Prophecy

14 Now Elisha had a terminal illness.[ae] King Jehoash of Israel went down to visit him.[af] He wept before him and said, “My father, my father! The chariot[ag] and horsemen of Israel!”[ah] 15 Elisha told him, “Take a bow and some arrows,” and he did so.[ai] 16 Then Elisha[aj] told the king of Israel, “Aim the bow.”[ak] He did so,[al] and Elisha placed his hands on the king’s hands. 17 Elisha[am] said, “Open the east window,” and he did so.[an] Elisha said, “Shoot!” and he did so.[ao] Elisha[ap] said, “This arrow symbolizes the victory the Lord will give you over Syria.[aq] You will annihilate Syria in Aphek!”[ar] 18 Then Elisha[as] said, “Take the arrows,” and he did so.[at] He told the king of Israel, “Strike the ground!” He struck the ground three times and stopped. 19 The prophet[au] got angry at him and said, “If you had struck the ground five or six times, you would have annihilated Syria![av] But now, you will defeat Syria only three times.”

20 Elisha died and was buried.[aw] Moabite raiding parties invaded[ax] the land at the beginning of the year.[ay] 21 One day some men[az] were burying a man when they spotted[ba] a raiding party. So they threw the dead man[bb] into Elisha’s tomb. When the body[bc] touched Elisha’s bones, the dead man[bd] came to life and stood on his feet.

22 Now King Hazael of Syria oppressed Israel throughout Jehoahaz’s reign.[be] 23 But the Lord had mercy on them and felt pity for them.[bf] He extended his favor to them[bg] because of the promise he had made[bh] to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He has been unwilling to destroy them or remove them from his presence to this very day.[bi] 24 When King Hazael of Syria died, his son Ben Hadad replaced him as king. 25 Jehoahaz’s son Jehoash took back from[bj] Ben Hadad son of Hazael the cities that he had taken from his father Jehoahaz in war. Jehoash defeated him three times and recovered the Israelite cities.

4 Then Jehoahaz sought(E) the Lord’s favor, and the Lord listened to him, for he saw(F) how severely the king of Aram was oppressing(G) Israel. 5 The Lord provided a deliverer(H) for Israel, and they escaped from the power of Aram. So the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before. 6 But they did not turn away from the sins(I) of the house of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit; they continued in them. Also, the Asherah pole[a](J) remained standing in Samaria.

7 Nothing had been left(K) of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed the rest and made them like the dust(L) at threshing time.

Now Moabite raiders(U) used to enter the country every spring. 21 Once while some Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders; so they threw the man’s body into Elisha’s tomb. When the body touched Elisha’s bones, the man came to life(V) and stood up on his feet.

22 Hazael king of Aram oppressed(W) Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz. 23 But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant(X) with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy(Y) them or banish them from his presence.(Z)

24 Hazael king of Aram died, and Ben-Hadad(AA) his son succeeded him as king. 25 Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz recaptured from Ben-Hadad son of Hazael the towns he had taken in battle from his father Jehoahaz. Three times(AB) Jehoash defeated him, and so he recovered(AC) the Israelite towns.

17 And he said, Open the window eastward. And he opened it. Then Elisha said, Shoot. And he shot. And he said, The arrow of the Lord's deliverance, and the arrow of deliverance from Syria: for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek, till thou have consumed them.

18 And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed.

19 And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.

20 And Elisha died, and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year.

21 And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha: and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.

22 But Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.

23 And the Lord was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet.

24 So Hazael king of Syria died; and Benhadad his son reigned in his stead.

25 And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities, which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Three times did Joash beat him, and recovered the cities of Israel.

10 El año treinta y siete de Joás rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Joás hijo de Joacaz sobre Israel en Samaria; y reinó dieciséis años. 11 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová; no se apartó de todos los pecados de Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, el que hizo pecar a Israel; en ellos anduvo. 12 Los demás hechos de Joás, y todo lo que hizo, y el esfuerzo con que guerreó contra Amasías rey de Judá, ¿no está escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel? 13 Y durmió Joás con sus padres, y se sentó Jeroboam sobre su trono; y Joás fue sepultado en Samaria con los reyes de Israel.

Profecía final y muerte de Eliseo

14 Estaba Eliseo enfermo de la enfermedad de que murió. Y descendió a él Joás rey de Israel, y llorando delante de él, dijo: ¡Padre mío, padre mío, carro de Israel y su gente de a caballo!(A) 15 Y le dijo Eliseo: Toma un arco y unas saetas. Tomó él entonces un arco y unas saetas. 16 Luego dijo Eliseo al rey de Israel: Pon tu mano sobre el arco. Y puso él su mano sobre el arco. Entonces puso Eliseo sus manos sobre las manos del rey, 17 y dijo: Abre la ventana que da al oriente. Y cuando él la abrió, dijo Eliseo: Tira. Y tirando él, dijo Eliseo: Saeta de salvación de Jehová, y saeta de salvación contra Siria; porque herirás a los sirios en Afec hasta consumirlos. 18 Y le volvió a decir: Toma las saetas. Y luego que el rey de Israel las hubo tomado, le dijo: Golpea la tierra. Y él la golpeó tres veces, y se detuvo. 19 Entonces el varón de Dios, enojado contra él, le dijo: Al dar cinco o seis golpes, hubieras derrotado a Siria hasta no quedar ninguno; pero ahora solo tres veces derrotarás a Siria.

20 Y murió Eliseo, y lo sepultaron. Entrado el año, vinieron bandas armadas de moabitas a la tierra. 21 Y aconteció que al sepultar unos a un hombre, súbitamente vieron una banda armada, y arrojaron el cadáver en el sepulcro de Eliseo; y cuando llegó a tocar el muerto los huesos de Eliseo, revivió, y se levantó sobre sus pies.

22 Hazael, pues, rey de Siria, afligió a Israel todo el tiempo de Joacaz. 23 Mas Jehová tuvo misericordia de ellos, y se compadeció de ellos y los miró, a causa de su pacto con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob; y no quiso destruirlos ni echarlos de delante de su presencia hasta hoy.

24 Y murió Hazael rey de Siria, y reinó en su lugar Ben-adad su hijo. 25 Y volvió Joás hijo de Joacaz y tomó de mano de Ben-adad hijo de Hazael las ciudades que este había tomado en guerra de mano de Joacaz su padre. Tres veces lo derrotó Joás, y restituyó las ciudades a Israel.
