Jeú mata a família de Acabe
10 Acabe tinha setenta filhos que moravam na cidade de Samaria. Jeú escreveu uma carta às autoridades e aos oficiais da cidade[a] e aos guardiões dos filhos do rei Acabe, em que dizia: 2 “Os filhos do rei estão sob seus cuidados, e vocês têm carros de guerra, cavalos, uma cidade fortificada e armas. Assim que receberem esta carta, 3 escolham para ser rei o melhor e mais capaz dos filhos de seu senhor e preparem-se para lutar pela dinastia de Acabe”.
4 Eles ficaram apavorados e disseram: “Dois reis não foram capazes de enfrentar esse homem! O que podemos fazer?”.
5 Então os administradores do palácio e da cidade, juntamente com as autoridades e os guardiões dos filhos do rei, enviaram esta mensagem a Jeú: “Somos seus servos e faremos o que o senhor ordenar. Não proclamaremos nenhum rei; faça o que lhe parecer melhor”.
6 Jeú respondeu com outra carta: “Se estão do meu lado e vão me obedecer, tragam-me as cabeças dos filhos de seu senhor a Jezreel, amanhã a esta hora”. Os setenta filhos de Acabe estavam sob os cuidados dos líderes de Samaria, onde haviam sido criados desde a infância. 7 Quando a carta chegou, os líderes mataram os setenta filhos do rei. Colocaram as cabeças em cestos e as entregaram a Jeú, em Jezreel.
8 Um mensageiro foi a Jeú e disse: “Eles trouxeram as cabeças dos filhos do rei”.
Então Jeú ordenou: “Façam com elas dois montões junto ao portão de entrada da cidade e deixem que fiquem lá até amanhã cedo”.
9 Na manhã seguinte, ele saiu e se dirigiu à multidão que havia se reunido ali. “Vocês não têm culpa”, disse ele. “Eu conspirei contra meu senhor e o matei. Mas quem matou todos estes? 10 Podem ter certeza de que a mensagem do Senhor a respeito da família de Acabe se cumprirá. O Senhor declarou por meio de seu servo Elias que isso aconteceria.” 11 Então Jeú matou todos os parentes de Acabe que restavam em Jezreel e todos os seus oficiais mais importantes, seus amigos pessoais e seus sacerdotes. Nenhum descendente de Acabe sobreviveu.
12 Depois, Jeú partiu para Samaria. No caminho, em Bete-Equede dos Pastores, 13 encontrou alguns parentes de Acazias, rei de Judá. “Quem são vocês?”, perguntou.
Eles responderam: “Somos parentes do rei Acazias. Vamos visitar a família do rei Acabe e da rainha-mãe”.
14 “Prendam-nos vivos!”, ordenou Jeú a seus homens. Eles os capturaram, 42 pessoas ao todo, e os mataram junto ao poço de Bete-Equede. Nenhum deles escapou.
15 Quando Jeú partiu dali, encontrou Jonadabe, filho de Recabe, que vinha falar com ele. Depois de cumprimentá-lo, Jeú lhe disse: “Você é leal a mim como sou a você?”.
“Sim, eu sou”, respondeu Jonadabe.
“Então dê-me sua mão”, disse Jeú. Jonadabe estendeu a mão, e Jeú o ajudou a subir à carruagem. 16 E lhe disse: “Venha comigo, e você verá a minha dedicação ao Senhor”. Jonadabe foi com ele.
17 Quando Jeú chegou a Samaria, matou todos que restavam ali da família de Acabe, como o Senhor havia anunciado por meio de Elias.
Jeú mata os sacerdotes de Baal
18 Jeú reuniu todo o povo da cidade e lhes disse: “A adoração de Acabe a Baal não foi nada comparado ao modo como eu o adorarei! 19 Portanto, convoquem todos os profetas e adoradores de Baal e reúnam todos os seus sacerdotes. Todos devem vir, pois vou oferecer um grande sacrifício a Baal. Quem não comparecer será morto”. O plano astuto de Jeú, porém, era destruir todos os adoradores de Baal.
20 Então Jeú ordenou: “Preparem uma reunião solene para prestar culto a Baal!”. A convocação foi feita, 21 e ele enviou mensageiros por todo o Israel. Todos os adoradores de Baal vieram, e ninguém faltou. Encheram o templo de Baal de uma extremidade à outra. 22 Jeú instruiu o responsável pela sala de vestimentas: “Todos os adoradores de Baal devem usar estas roupas”. E as roupas foram distribuídas.
23 Em seguida, Jeú entrou no templo de Baal com Jonadabe, filho de Recabe. Disse aos adoradores de Baal: “Certifiquem-se de que ninguém que adora o Senhor esteja aqui, mas somente aqueles que adoram Baal”. 24 Estavam todos dentro do templo para oferecer sacrifícios e holocaustos. Jeú havia colocado oitenta homens do lado de fora do edifício e os avisado: “Se deixarem alguém escapar, pagarão com a própria vida”.
25 Assim que Jeú terminou de oferecer o holocausto, deu ordem a seus guardas e oficiais: “Entrem e matem todos. Não deixem ninguém escapar!”. Os guardas e os oficiais mataram todos e arrastaram os corpos para fora.[b] Então os homens de Jeú entraram na câmara mais interna do templo de Baal. 26 Levaram para fora a coluna sagrada usada no culto a Baal e a jogaram no fogo. 27 Despedaçaram a coluna sagrada, demoliram o templo de Baal e o transformaram em banheiros públicos, como é até hoje.
28 Desse modo, Jeú destruiu todos os vestígios do culto a Baal em Israel. 29 Contudo, não destruiu os bezerros de ouro em Betel e Dã com os quais Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, havia levado Israel a pecar.
30 Ainda assim, o Senhor disse a Jeú: “Você fez bem em seguir minhas instruções e destruir a família de Acabe. Por isso, seus descendentes serão reis de Israel até a quarta geração”. 31 Mas Jeú não obedeceu de todo o coração à lei do Senhor, o Deus de Israel. Não se afastou dos pecados que Jeroboão havia levado Israel a cometer.
A morte de Jeú
32 Naquele tempo, o Senhor começou a reduzir o território de Israel. O rei Hazael conquistou várias regiões do reino 33 a leste do rio Jordão, incluindo toda a terra de Gileade, de Gade, de Rúben e de Manassés. Conquistou a região desde a cidade de Aroer, perto do vale do Arnom, até Gileade e Basã, ao norte.
34 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Jeú, tudo que ele fez e a extensão de seu poder, estão registrados no Livro da História dos Reis de Israel.
35 Quando Jeú morreu e se reuniu a seus antepassados, foi sepultado em Samaria. Seu filho Jeoacaz foi seu sucessor. 36 Ao todo, Jeú reinou por 28 anos sobre Israel em Samaria.

A Morte da Família de Acabe
10 Ora, viviam em Samaria setenta descendentes de Acabe. Jeú escreveu uma carta e a enviou a Samaria, aos líderes da cidade[a], às autoridades e aos tutores dos descendentes de Acabe. A carta dizia: 2 “Assim que receberem esta carta, vocês, que cuidam dos filhos do rei e que têm carros de guerra e cavalos, uma cidade fortificada e armas, 3 escolham o melhor e o mais capaz dos filhos do rei e coloquem-no no trono de seu pai. E lutem pela dinastia de seu senhor”.
4 Eles, porém, estavam aterrorizados e disseram: “Se dois reis não puderam enfrentá-lo, como poderemos nós?”
5 Por isso o administrador do palácio, o governador da cidade, as autoridades e os tutores enviaram esta mensagem a Jeú: “Somos teus servos e faremos tudo o que exigires de nós. Não proclamaremos nenhum rei. Faze o que achares melhor”.
6 Então Jeú escreveu-lhes uma segunda carta que dizia: “Se vocês estão do meu lado e estão dispostos a obedecer-me, tragam-me as cabeças dos descendentes de seu senhor a Jezreel, amanhã a esta hora”.
Os setenta descendentes de Acabe estavam sendo criados pelas autoridades da cidade. 7 Logo que receberam a carta, decapitaram todos os setenta, colocaram as cabeças em cestos e as enviaram a Jeú, em Jezreel. 8 Ao ser informado de que tinham trazido as cabeças, Jeú ordenou: “Façam com elas dois montes junto à porta da cidade, para que fiquem expostas lá até amanhã”.
9 Na manhã seguinte Jeú saiu e declarou a todo o povo: “Vocês são inocentes! Fui eu que conspirei contra meu senhor e o matei, mas quem matou todos estes? 10 Saibam, então, que não deixará de se cumprir uma só palavra que o Senhor falou contra a família de Acabe. O Senhor fez o que prometeu por meio de seu servo Elias”. 11 Então Jeú matou todos os que restavam da família de Acabe em Jezreel, bem como todos os seus aliados influentes, os seus amigos pessoais e os seus sacerdotes, não lhe deixando sobrevivente algum.
12 Depois Jeú partiu para Samaria. Em Bete-Equede dos Pastores 13 encontrou alguns parentes de Acazias, rei de Judá, e perguntou: “Quem são vocês?”
Eles responderam: “Somos parentes de Acazias e estamos indo visitar as famílias do rei e da rainha-mãe”.
14 Então Jeú ordenou aos seus soldados: “Peguem-nos vivos!” Então os pegaram e os mataram junto ao poço de Bete-Equede. Eram quarenta e dois homens, e nenhum deles foi deixado vivo.
15 Saindo dali, Jeú encontrou Jonadabe, filho de Recabe, que tinha ido falar com ele. Depois de saudá-lo Jeú perguntou: “Você está de acordo com o que estou fazendo?”
Jonadabe respondeu: “Estou”.
E disse Jeú: “Então, dê-me a mão”. Jonadabe estendeu-lhe a mão, e Jeú o ajudou a subir no carro, 16 e lhe disse: “Venha comigo e veja o meu zelo pelo Senhor”. E o levou em seu carro.
17 Quando Jeú chegou a Samaria, matou todos os que restavam da família de Acabe na cidade; ele os exterminou, conforme a palavra que o Senhor tinha dito a Elias.
A Morte dos Ministros de Baal
18 Jeú reuniu todo o povo e declarou: “Acabe não cultuou o deus Baal o bastante; eu, Jeú, o cultuarei muito mais. 19 Por isso convoquem todos os profetas de Baal, todos os seus ministros e todos os seus sacerdotes. Ninguém deverá faltar, pois oferecerei um grande sacrifício a Baal. Quem não vier, morrerá”. Mas Jeú estava agindo traiçoeiramente, a fim de exterminar os ministros de Baal.
20 Então Jeú ordenou: “Convoquem uma assembléia em honra a Baal”. Foi feita a proclamação 21 e ele enviou mensageiros por todo o Israel. Todos os ministros de Baal vieram; nem um deles faltou. Eles se reuniram no templo de Baal, que ficou completamente lotado. 22 E Jeú disse ao encarregado das vestes cultuais: “Traga os mantos para todos os ministros de Baal”. E ele os trouxe.
23 Depois Jeú entrou no templo com Jonadabe, filho de Recabe, e disse aos ministros de Baal: “Olhem em volta e certifiquem-se de que nenhum servo do Senhor está aqui com vocês, mas somente ministros de Baal”. 24 E eles se aproximaram para oferecer sacrifícios e holocaustos[b]. Jeú havia posto oitenta homens do lado de fora, fazendo-lhes esta advertência: “Se um de vocês deixar escapar um só dos homens que estou entregando a vocês, será a sua vida pela dele”.
25 Logo que Jeú terminou de oferecer o holocausto, ordenou aos guardas e oficiais: “Entrem e matem todos! Não deixem ninguém escapar!” E eles os mataram ao fio da espada, jogaram os corpos para fora e depois entraram no santuário interno do templo de Baal. 26 Levaram a coluna sagrada para fora do templo de Baal e a queimaram. 27 Assim destruíram a coluna sagrada de Baal e demoliram o seu templo, e até hoje o local tem sido usado como latrina.
28 Assim Jeú eliminou a adoração a Baal em Israel. 29 No entanto, não se afastou dos pecados de Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, pois levou Israel a cometer o pecado de adorar os bezerros de ouro em Betel e em Dã.
30 E o Senhor disse a Jeú: “Como você executou corretamente o que eu aprovo, fazendo com a família de Acabe tudo o que eu queria, seus descendentes ocuparão o trono de Israel até a quarta geração”. 31 Entretanto, Jeú não se preocupou em obedecer de todo o coração à lei do Senhor, Deus de Israel, nem se afastou dos pecados que Jeroboão levara Israel a cometer.
32 Naqueles dias, o Senhor começou a reduzir o tamanho de Israel. O rei Hazael conquistou todo o território israelita 33 a leste do Jordão, incluindo toda a terra de Gileade. Conquistou desde Aroer, junto à garganta do Arnom, até Basã, passando por Gileade, terras das tribos de Gade, de Rúben e de Manassés.
34 Os demais acontecimentos do reinado de Jeú, todos os seus atos e todas as suas realizações, estão escritos nos registros históricos dos reis de Israel. 35 Jeú descansou com os seus antepassados e foi sepultado em Samaria. Seu filho Jeoacaz foi seu sucessor. 36 Reinou Jeú vinte e oito anos sobre Israel em Samaria.

Ahab’s Seventy Sons Killed
10 Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote and sent letters to Samaria, to the rulers of [a]Jezreel, to the elders, and to [b]those who reared Ahab’s sons, saying:
2 Now as soon as this letter comes to you, since your master’s sons are with you, and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city also, and weapons, 3 choose the [c]best qualified of your master’s sons, set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.
4 But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, “Look, (A)two kings could not [d]stand up to him; how then can we stand?” 5 And he who was in charge of the house, and he who was in charge of the city, the elders also, and those who reared the sons, sent to Jehu, saying, “We are your servants, we will do all you tell us; but we will not make anyone king. Do what is good in your sight.” 6 Then he wrote a second letter to them, saying:
If you are for me and will obey my voice, take the heads of the men, your master’s sons, and come to me at Jezreel by this time tomorrow.
Now the king’s sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were rearing them. 7 So it was, when the letter came to them, that they took the king’s sons and (B)slaughtered seventy persons, put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel.
8 Then a messenger came and told him, saying, “They have brought the heads of the king’s sons.”
And he said, “Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.”
9 So it was, in the morning, that he went out and stood, and said to all the people, “You are righteous. Indeed (C)I conspired against my master and killed him; but who killed all these? 10 Know now that nothing shall (D)fall to the earth of the word of the Lord which the Lord spoke concerning the house of Ahab; for the Lord has done what He spoke (E)by His servant Elijah.” 11 So Jehu killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men and his close acquaintances and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
Ahaziah’s Forty-two Brothers Killed
12 And he arose and departed and went to Samaria. On the way, at [e]Beth Eked of the Shepherds, 13 (F)Jehu met with the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, “Who are you?”
So they answered, “We are the brothers of Ahaziah; we have come down to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen mother.”
14 And he said, “Take them alive!” So they took them alive, and (G)killed them at the well of [f]Beth Eked, forty-two men; and he left none of them.
The Rest of Ahab’s Family Killed
15 Now when he departed from there, he [g]met (H)Jehonadab the son of (I)Rechab, coming to meet him; and he greeted him and said to him, “Is your heart right, as my heart is toward your heart?”
And Jehonadab answered, “It is.”
Jehu said, “If it is, (J)give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand, and he took him up to him into the chariot. 16 Then he said, “Come with me, and see my (K)zeal for the Lord.” So they had him ride in his chariot. 17 And when he came to Samaria, (L)he killed all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed them, according to the word of the Lord (M)which He spoke to Elijah.
Worshipers of Baal Killed
18 Then Jehu gathered all the people together, and said to them, (N)“Ahab served Baal a little, Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now therefore, call to me all the (O)prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. Let no one be missing, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu acted deceptively, with the intent of destroying the worshipers of Baal. 20 And Jehu said, [h]“Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal.” So they proclaimed it. 21 Then Jehu sent throughout all Israel; and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who did not come. So they came into the [i]temple of Baal, and the (P)temple of Baal was full from one end to the other. 22 And he said to the one in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out vestments for all the worshipers of Baal.” So he brought out vestments for them. 23 Then Jehu and Jehonadab the son of Rechab went into the temple of Baal, and said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search and see that no servants of the Lord are here with you, but only the worshipers of Baal.” 24 So they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had appointed for himself eighty men on the outside, and had said, “If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escapes, whoever lets him escape, it shall be (Q)his life for the life of the other.”
25 Now it happened, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, “Go in and kill them; let no one come out!” And they killed them with the edge of the sword; then the guards and the officers threw them out, and went into the [j]inner room of the temple of Baal. 26 And they brought the (R)sacred pillars out of the temple of Baal and burned them. 27 Then they broke down the sacred pillar of Baal, and tore down the [k]temple of Baal and (S)made it a refuse dump to this day. 28 Thus Jehu destroyed Baal from Israel.
29 However Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin, that is, from (T)the golden calves that were at Bethel and Dan. 30 And the Lord (U)said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in doing what is right in My sight, and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, (V)your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.” 31 But Jehu [l]took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart; for he did not depart from (W)the sins of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin.
Death of Jehu
32 In those days the Lord began to cut off parts of Israel; and (X)Hazael conquered them in all the territory of Israel 33 from the Jordan eastward: all the land of Gilead—Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh—from (Y)Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, including (Z)Gilead and Bashan.
34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 35 So Jehu [m]rested with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. Then (AA)Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place. 36 And the period that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.

Ahab’s Family Killed
10 Now there were in Samaria(A) seventy sons(B) of the house of Ahab. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria: to the officials of Jezreel,[a](C) to the elders and to the guardians(D) of Ahab’s children. He said, 2 “You have your master’s sons with you and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city and weapons. Now as soon as this letter reaches you, 3 choose the best and most worthy of your master’s sons and set him on his father’s throne. Then fight for your master’s house.”
4 But they were terrified and said, “If two kings could not resist him, how can we?”
5 So the palace administrator, the city governor, the elders and the guardians sent this message to Jehu: “We are your servants(E) and we will do anything you say. We will not appoint anyone as king; you do whatever you think best.”
6 Then Jehu wrote them a second letter, saying, “If you are on my side and will obey me, take the heads of your master’s sons and come to me in Jezreel by this time tomorrow.”
Now the royal princes, seventy of them, were with the leading men of the city, who were rearing them. 7 When the letter arrived, these men took the princes and slaughtered all seventy(F) of them. They put their heads(G) in baskets and sent them to Jehu in Jezreel. 8 When the messenger arrived, he told Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the princes.”
Then Jehu ordered, “Put them in two piles at the entrance of the city gate until morning.”
9 The next morning Jehu went out. He stood before all the people and said, “You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him, but who killed all these? 10 Know, then, that not a word the Lord has spoken against the house of Ahab will fail. The Lord has done what he announced(H) through his servant Elijah.”(I) 11 So Jehu(J) killed everyone in Jezreel who remained of the house of Ahab, as well as all his chief men, his close friends and his priests, leaving him no survivor.(K)
12 Jehu then set out and went toward Samaria. At Beth Eked of the Shepherds, 13 he met some relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, “Who are you?”
They said, “We are relatives of Ahaziah,(L) and we have come down to greet the families of the king and of the queen mother.(M)”
14 “Take them alive!” he ordered. So they took them alive and slaughtered them by the well of Beth Eked—forty-two of them. He left no survivor.(N)
15 After he left there, he came upon Jehonadab(O) son of Rekab,(P) who was on his way to meet him. Jehu greeted him and said, “Are you in accord with me, as I am with you?”
“I am,” Jehonadab answered.
“If so,” said Jehu, “give me your hand.”(Q) So he did, and Jehu helped him up into the chariot. 16 Jehu said, “Come with me and see my zeal(R) for the Lord.” Then he had him ride along in his chariot.
17 When Jehu came to Samaria, he killed all who were left there of Ahab’s family;(S) he destroyed them, according to the word of the Lord spoken to Elijah.
Servants of Baal Killed
18 Then Jehu brought all the people together and said to them, “Ahab served(T) Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now summon(U) all the prophets of Baal, all his servants and all his priests. See that no one is missing, because I am going to hold a great sacrifice for Baal. Anyone who fails to come will no longer live.” But Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal.
20 Jehu said, “Call an assembly(V) in honor of Baal.” So they proclaimed it. 21 Then he sent word throughout Israel, and all the servants of Baal came; not one stayed away. They crowded into the temple of Baal until it was full from one end to the other. 22 And Jehu said to the keeper of the wardrobe, “Bring robes for all the servants of Baal.” So he brought out robes for them.
23 Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rekab went into the temple of Baal. Jehu said to the servants of Baal, “Look around and see that no one who serves the Lord is here with you—only servants of Baal.” 24 So they went in to make sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had posted eighty men outside with this warning: “If one of you lets any of the men I am placing in your hands escape, it will be your life for his life.”(W)
25 As soon as Jehu had finished making the burnt offering, he ordered the guards and officers: “Go in and kill(X) them; let no one escape.”(Y) So they cut them down with the sword. The guards and officers threw the bodies out and then entered the inner shrine of the temple of Baal. 26 They brought the sacred stone(Z) out of the temple of Baal and burned it. 27 They demolished the sacred stone of Baal and tore down the temple(AA) of Baal, and people have used it for a latrine to this day.
28 So Jehu(AB) destroyed Baal worship in Israel. 29 However, he did not turn away from the sins(AC) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden calves(AD) at Bethel(AE) and Dan.
30 The Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”(AF) 31 Yet Jehu was not careful(AG) to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins(AH) of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.
32 In those days the Lord began to reduce(AI) the size of Israel. Hazael(AJ) overpowered the Israelites throughout their territory 33 east of the Jordan in all the land of Gilead (the region of Gad, Reuben and Manasseh), from Aroer(AK) by the Arnon(AL) Gorge through Gilead to Bashan.
34 As for the other events of Jehu’s reign, all he did, and all his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals(AM) of the kings of Israel?
35 Jehu rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son succeeded him as king. 36 The time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.
