Ricorso al profeta Isaia
19 Quando udì, il re Ezechia si lacerò le vesti, si coprì di sacco e andò nel tempio. 2 Quindi mandò Eliadìm, il maggiordomo, Sebna lo scriba e gli anziani dei sacerdoti coperti di sacco dal profeta Isaia figlio di Amoz, 3 perché gli dicessero: «Dice Ezechia: Giorno di angoscia, di castigo e di vergogna è questo, poiché i bambini giungono al punto di venire alla luce, ma manca alla partoriente la forza di partorire. 4 Forse il Signore tuo Dio ha udito le parole del gran coppiere, che il re d'Assiria suo signore ha inviato a insultare il Dio vivente e lo castigherà per le parole che il Signore tuo Dio ha udito. Innalza ora una preghiera per quelli che ancora sopravvivono».
5 Così i ministri del re Ezechia andarono da Isaia. 6 Disse loro Isaia: «Riferite al vostro padrone: Dice il Signore: Non temere le cose che hai udite e con le quali i servitori del re d'Assiria mi hanno ingiuriato. 7 Ecco io manderò in lui uno spirito tale che egli, appena avrà udito una notizia, ritornerà nel suo paese e nel suo paese io lo farò perire di spada».
Partenza del gran coppiere
8 Il gran coppiere ritornò e trovò il re d'Assiria che assaliva Libna, poiché aveva saputo che si era allontanato da Lachis. 9 Appena Sennàcherib seppe che Tiraca re di Etiopia era uscito per muovergli guerra, inviò di nuovo messaggeri a Ezechia per dirgli:
Lettera di Sennàcherib a Ezechia
10 «Direte a Ezechia, re di Giuda: Non ti inganni il Dio in cui confidi, dicendoti: Gerusalemme non sarà consegnata nelle mani del re d'Assiria. 11 Ecco, tu sai ciò che hanno fatto i re di Assiria in tutti i paesi che votarono allo sterminio. Soltanto tu ti salveresti? 12 Gli dei delle nazioni che i miei padri distrussero hanno forse salvato quelli di Gozan, di Carran, di Rezef e le genti di Eden in Telassàr? 13 Dove sono il re di Amat e il re di Arpad e il re della città di Sefarvàim, di Ena e di Ivva?».
14 Ezechia prese la lettera dalle mani dei messaggeri e la lesse, poi salì al tempio e, svolgendo lo scritto davanti al Signore, 15 pregò: «Signore Dio di Israele, che siedi sui cherubini, tu solo sei Dio per tutti i regni della terra; tu hai fatto il cielo e la terra. 16 Porgi, Signore, l'orecchio e ascolta; apri, Signore, gli occhi e vedi; ascolta tutte le parole che Sennàcherib ha fatto dire per insultare il Dio vivente. 17 E' vero, o Signore, che i re d'Assiria hanno devastato tutte le nazioni e i loro territori; 18 hanno gettato i loro dei nel fuoco; quelli però, non erano dei, ma solo opera delle mani d'uomo, legno e pietra; perciò li hanno distrutti. 19 Ora, Signore nostro Dio, liberaci dalla sua mano, perché sappiano tutti i regni della terra che tu sei il Signore, il solo Dio».
Intervento di Isaia
20 Allora Isaia figlio di Amoz mandò a dire a Ezechia: «Dice il Signore, Dio di Israele: Ho udito quanto hai chiesto nella tua preghiera riguardo a Sennàcherib re d'Assiria. 21 Questa è la parola che il Signore ha pronunziato contro di lui:
Ti disprezza, ti deride
la vergine figlia di Sion.
Dietro a te scuote il capo
la figlia di Gerusalemme.
22 Chi hai insultato e schernito?
Contro chi hai alzato la voce
e hai elevato, superbo, i tuoi occhi?
Contro il Santo di Israele!
23 Per mezzo dei tuoi messaggeri hai insultato il
Signore
e hai detto: Con i miei carri numerosi
sono salito in cima ai monti,
sugli estremi gioghi del Libano:
ne ho tagliato i cedri più alti,
i suoi cipressi più belli;
sono penetrato nel suo angolo più remoto,
nella sua foresta lussureggiante.
24 Io ho scavato e bevuto
acque straniere;
ho fatto inaridire con la pianta dei miei piedi
tutti i torrenti d'Egitto.
25 Non hai forse udito? Da tempo
ho preparato questo;
da giorni remoti io l'ho progettato;
ora lo eseguisco.
Era deciso che tu riducessi un cumulo di rovine
le città fortificate;
26 i loro abitanti impotenti
erano spaventati e confusi,
erano come l'erba dei campi,
come una giovane pianta verde,
come l'erba dei tetti,
bruciata dal vento d'oriente.
27 Ti sieda, esca
o rientri, io ti conosco.
28 Siccome infuri contro di me e la tua arroganza
è salita ai miei orecchi,
ti porrò il mio anello alle narici
e il mio morso alle labbra;
ti farò tornare per la strada,
per la quale sei venuto.
29 Questo ti serva come segno:
si mangi quest'anno il frutto dei semi caduti,
nell'anno prossimo ciò che nasce da sé,
nel terzo anno semineranno e mieteranno,
pianteranno vigne e ne mangeranno il frutto.
30 Il resto della casa di Giuda che scamperà
continuerà a mettere radici di sotto
e a dar frutto in alto.
31 Poiché da Gerusalemme uscirà il resto,
dal monte Sion il residuo.
Lo zelo del Signore farà ciò.
32 Perciò dice il Signore contro il re d'Assiria:
Non entrerà in questa città
e non vi lancerà una freccia,
non l'affronterà con scudi
e non vi costruirà terrapieno.
33 Ritornerà per la strada per cui è venuto;
non entrerà in questa città.
Oracolo del Signore.
34 Proteggerò questa città per salvarla,
per amore di me e di Davide mio servo».
Disfatta e morte di Sennàcherib
35 Ora in quella notte l'angelo del Signore scese e percosse nell'accampamento degli Assiri centottantacinquemila uomini. Quando i superstiti si alzarono al mattino, ecco, quelli erano tutti morti.
36 Sennàcherib re d'Assiria levò le tende, fece ritorno e rimase a Ninive. 37 Mentre pregava nel tempio di Nisroch suo dio, Adram-Mèlech e Sarèzer suoi figli l'uccisero di spada, mettendosi quindi al sicuro nel paese di Ararat. Al suo posto divenne re suo figlio Assarhàddon.

Jerusalem’s Deliverance Foretold(A)
19 When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore(B) his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the Lord. 2 He sent Eliakim(C) the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests,(D) all wearing sackcloth,(E) to the prophet Isaiah(F) son of Amoz. 3 They told him, “This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the moment(G) of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. 4 It may be that the Lord your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule(H) the living God, and that he will rebuke(I) him for the words the Lord your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant(J) that still survives.”
5 When King Hezekiah’s officials came to Isaiah, 6 Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid(K) of what you have heard—those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed(L) me. 7 Listen! When he hears a certain report,(M) I will make him want to return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.(N)’”
8 When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish,(O) he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah.(P)
9 Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the king of Cush,[a] was marching out to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: 10 “Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend(Q) on deceive(R) you when he says, ‘Jerusalem will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria.’ 11 Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? 12 Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my predecessors deliver(S) them—the gods of Gozan,(T) Harran,(U) Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath or the king of Arpad? Where are the kings of Lair, Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah?”(V)
Hezekiah’s Prayer(W)
14 Hezekiah received the letter(X) from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15 And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: “Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim,(Y) you alone(Z) are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16 Give ear,(AA) Lord, and hear;(AB) open your eyes,(AC) Lord, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to ridicule the living God.
17 “It is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. 18 They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods(AD) but only wood and stone, fashioned by human hands.(AE) 19 Now, Lord our God, deliver(AF) us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms(AG) of the earth may know(AH) that you alone, Lord, are God.”
Isaiah Prophesies Sennacherib’s Fall(AI)(AJ)
20 Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I have heard(AK) your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria. 21 This is the word that the Lord has spoken against(AL) him:
“‘Virgin Daughter(AM) Zion
despises(AN) you and mocks(AO) you.
Daughter Jerusalem
tosses her head(AP) as you flee.
22 Who is it you have ridiculed and blasphemed?(AQ)
Against whom have you raised your voice
and lifted your eyes in pride?
Against the Holy One(AR) of Israel!
23 By your messengers
you have ridiculed the Lord.
And you have said,(AS)
“With my many chariots(AT)
I have ascended the heights of the mountains,
the utmost heights of Lebanon.
I have cut down(AU) its tallest cedars,
the choicest of its junipers.
I have reached its remotest parts,
the finest of its forests.
24 I have dug wells in foreign lands
and drunk the water there.
With the soles of my feet
I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”
25 “‘Have you not heard?(AV)
Long ago I ordained it.
In days of old I planned(AW) it;
now I have brought it to pass,
that you have turned fortified cities
into piles of stone.(AX)
26 Their people, drained of power,(AY)
are dismayed(AZ) and put to shame.
They are like plants in the field,
like tender green shoots,(BA)
like grass sprouting on the roof,
scorched(BB) before it grows up.
27 “‘But I know(BC) where you are
and when you come and go
and how you rage against me.
28 Because you rage against me
and because your insolence has reached my ears,
I will put my hook(BD) in your nose
and my bit(BE) in your mouth,
and I will make you return(BF)
by the way you came.’
29 “This will be the sign(BG) for you, Hezekiah:
“This year you will eat what grows by itself,(BH)
and the second year what springs from that.
But in the third year sow and reap,
plant vineyards(BI) and eat their fruit.
30 Once more a remnant(BJ) of the kingdom of Judah
will take root(BK) below and bear fruit above.
31 For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant,(BL)
and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors.(BM)
“The zeal(BN) of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
32 “Therefore this is what the Lord says concerning the king of Assyria:
“‘He will not enter this city
or shoot an arrow here.
He will not come before it with shield
or build a siege ramp against it.
33 By the way that he came he will return;(BO)
he will not enter this city,
declares the Lord.
34 I will defend(BP) this city and save it,
for my sake and for the sake of David(BQ) my servant.’”
35 That night the angel of the Lord(BR) went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies!(BS) 36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew.(BT) He returned to Nineveh(BU) and stayed there.
37 One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisrok, his sons Adrammelek(BV) and Sharezer killed him with the sword,(BW) and they escaped to the land of Ararat.(BX) And Esarhaddon(BY) his son succeeded him as king.

19 (A)Cuando el rey Ezequías oyó esto rasgó sus vestidos(B), se cubrió de cilicio(C) y entró en la casa del Señor. 2 Envió entonces a Eliaquim, mayordomo de la casa real, con el escriba Sebna y los ancianos de los sacerdotes, cubiertos de cilicio(D), para hablar con el profeta Isaías, hijo de Amoz(E). 3 Y ellos le dijeron: «Así dice Ezequías: “Este día es día de angustia, de reprensión y de desprecio, pues hijos están para nacer, pero no hay fuerzas para dar a luz. 4 Tal vez el Señor tu Dios oirá todas las palabras del Rabsaces(F), a quien su señor, el rey de Asiria, ha enviado para injuriar al Dios vivo, y lo reprenderá por las palabras que el Señor tu Dios ha oído(G). Eleva, pues, una oración por el remanente que aún queda(H)”».
5 Cuando llegaron los siervos del rey Ezequías ante Isaías, 6 este les dijo: «Así dirán a su señor: “Así dice el Señor: ‘No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las que los criados del rey de Asiria(I) me han blasfemado(J). 7 Yo pondré en él un espíritu, oirá un rumor(K) y se volverá a su tierra; y en su tierra lo haré caer a espada(L)’”».
8 Entonces el Rabsaces volvió y halló al rey de Asiria peleando contra Libna(M), pues había oído que el rey había partido de Laquis(N). 9 Y les oyó decir acerca de Tirhaca, rey de Cus[a]: «Ha salido a pelear contra ti». Entonces envió de nuevo mensajeros a Ezequías, diciendo: 10 «Así dirán a Ezequías, rey de Judá: “No te engañe tu Dios en quien tú confías(O), diciendo: ‘Jerusalén no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria(P)’. 11 Tú has oído lo que los reyes de Asiria han hecho a todas las naciones[b], destruyéndolas por completo, ¿y serás tú librado? 12 ¿Acaso los libraron los dioses de las naciones que mis padres destruyeron(Q), es decir, Gozán(R), Harán(S), Resef y a los hijos de Edén que estaban en Telasar(T)? 13 ¿Dónde está el rey de Hamat, el rey de Arfad, el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvaim, de Hena y de Iva(U)?”».
14 Entonces Ezequías tomó la carta de mano de los mensajeros y la leyó, y subió a la casa del Señor y la extendió delante del Señor(V). 15 Y oró Ezequías delante del Señor, y dijo: «Oh Señor, Dios de Israel, que estás sobre los querubines(W), solo Tú eres Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra(X). Tú hiciste los cielos y la tierra. 16 Inclina, oh Señor, Tu oído y escucha; abre, oh Señor, Tus ojos y mira(Y); escucha las palabras que Senaquerib ha enviado para injuriar al Dios vivo(Z). 17 En verdad, oh Señor, los reyes de Asiria han asolado las naciones y sus tierras, 18 y han echado sus dioses al fuego, porque no eran dioses, sino obra de manos de hombre, de madera y piedra(AA); por eso los han destruido. 19 Y ahora, oh Señor, Dios nuestro, líbranos, te ruego, de su mano para que todos los reinos de la tierra sepan que solo Tú(AB), oh Señor, eres Dios(AC)».
20 Entonces Isaías, hijo de Amoz, envió a decir a Ezequías: «Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Lo que me has rogado acerca de Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, he escuchado(AD)”. 21 Esta es la palabra que el Señor ha hablado contra él:
“Te ha despreciado y se ha burlado de ti
La virgen hija de Sión(AE);
Ha movido la cabeza(AF) a tus espaldas
La hija de Jerusalén.
22 -”¿A quién has injuriado y blasfemado(AG)?
¿Y contra quién has alzado la voz
Y levantado con orgullo tus ojos?
¡Contra el Santo de Israel(AH)!
23 -”Por mano de tus mensajeros has injuriado al Señor,
Y has dicho: ‘Con mis numerosos carros
Subí a las cumbres de los montes(AI),
A las partes más remotas del Líbano;
Corté sus altos cedros y sus mejores cipreses,
Y entré en su morada más lejana, en su más frondoso bosque(AJ).
24 -’Yo cavé pozos(AK) y bebí aguas extranjeras,
Y sequé con la planta de mi pie
Todos los ríos de Egipto’.
25 ¶”¿No has oído?
Hace mucho tiempo que lo hice,
Desde la antigüedad lo había planeado(AL).
Ahora lo he realizado(AM),
Para que conviertas las ciudades fortificadas
En montones de ruinas.
26 -”Sus habitantes, faltos de fuerzas,
Fueron desalentados y humillados;
Vinieron a ser como la vegetación del campo
Y como la hierba verde,
Como la hierba en los techos que se quema
Antes de que haya crecido(AN).
27 -”Pero conozco tu sentarte,
Tu salir y tu entrar,
Y tu furor contra Mí(AO).
28 -”Porque estás lleno de ira contra Mí,
Y porque tu arrogancia[c] ha subido hasta Mis oídos,
Pondré, pues, Mi argolla en tu nariz(AP)
Y Mi freno en tus labios,
Y te haré volver por el camino por donde viniste(AQ).
29 ”Esto te será por señal(AR): Este año ustedes comerán lo que crezca espontáneamente; el segundo año lo que nazca de por sí, y en el tercer año siembren, sieguen, planten viñas y coman su fruto. 30 Y el remanente de la casa de Judá(AS) que se salve, de nuevo echará raíces por debajo y dará fruto por arriba. 31 Porque de Jerusalén saldrá un remanente, y del monte Sión sobrevivientes(AT). El celo del Señor de los ejércitos hará esto(AU).
32 ”Por tanto, así dice el Señor acerca del rey de Asiria: ‘Él no entrará en esta ciudad, ni lanzará allí flecha alguna; tampoco vendrá delante de ella con escudo, ni levantará terraplén contra ella(AV). 33 Por el camino que vino, por él se volverá(AW), y no entrará en esta ciudad’”, declara el Señor. 34 “Porque defenderé esta ciudad para salvarla por amor a Mí mismo(AX) y por amor a Mi siervo David(AY)”».
Muerte de Senaquerib
35 Aconteció que aquella misma noche salió el ángel del Señor e hirió a 185,000 en el campamento de los asirios. Cuando los demás se levantaron por la mañana, vieron que todos eran cadáveres(AZ). 36 Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, salió y regresó a su tierra(BA), y habitó en Nínive(BB). 37 Y mientras él adoraba en la casa de su dios Nisroc, Adramelec y Sarezer lo mataron a espada(BC) y huyeron a la tierra de Ararat(BD). Y su hijo(BE) Esar Hadón reinó en su lugar.

19 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.
2 And he sent Eliakim, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
3 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
4 It may be the Lord thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the Lord thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left.
5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith the Lord, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
9 And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying,
10 Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
11 Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered?
12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed; as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Thelasar?
13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivah?
14 And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.
15 And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said, O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth.
16 Lord, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, Lord, thine eyes, and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him to reproach the living God.
17 Of a truth, Lord, the kings of Assyria have destroyed the nations and their lands,
18 And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.
19 Now therefore, O Lord our God, I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord God, even thou only.
20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.
21 This is the word that the Lord hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.
22 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.
23 By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel.
24 I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.
25 Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps.
26 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the house tops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
27 But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.
28 Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.
29 And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruits thereof.
30 And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
31 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this.
32 Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
33 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the Lord.
34 For I will defend this city, to save it, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake.
35 And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
37 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Armenia. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.
