English Standard Version
6 (A)Wail, for (B)the day of the Lord is near;
as destruction from the Almighty[a] it will come!
7 Therefore all hands will be feeble,
and every human heart (C)will melt.
8 They will be dismayed:
(D)pangs and agony will seize them;
(E)they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.
They will look aghast at one another;
their faces will be aflame.
9 Behold, (F)the day of the Lord comes,

to make the land a desolation
and (G)to destroy its sinners from it.

Let Justice Roll Down
18 Woe to you who desire (A)the day of the Lord!
Why would you have the day of the Lord?
(B)It is darkness, and not light,
19 (C)as if a man fled from a lion,
and a bear met him,
or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall,
and a serpent bit him.
20 (D)Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light,
and gloom with no brightness in it?

The siege of Jerusalem (G)will also be against Judah. 3 (H)On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. (I)All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And (J)all the nations of the earth will gather against it. 4 (K)On that day, declares the Lord, (L)I will strike every horse (M)with panic, and its rider (N)with madness. But for the sake of the house of Judah I will keep my eyes open, when I strike every horse of the peoples (O)with blindness. 5 Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the Lord of hosts, their God.’
6 (P)“On that day I will make the clans of Judah (Q)like a blazing pot in the midst of wood, like a flaming torch among sheaves. And (R)they shall devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples, while (S)Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its place, in Jerusalem.
