⁹ then ^(A)the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials,^[a] and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,

⁹ For God has not destined us for ^(A)wrath, but ^(B)to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, ^10 (C)who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him.

⁴ But when ^(A)the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, ⁵ he saved us, ^(B)not because of works done by us in righteousness, but ^(C)according to his own mercy, by ^(D)the washing of regeneration and ^(E)renewal of the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he ^(F)poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ so that ^(G)being justified by his grace we might become ^(H)heirs ^(I)according to the hope of eternal life.

^21 (A)keep yourselves in the love of God, ^(B)waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. ²² And have mercy on those who doubt;
