2 Peter 1
Common English Bible
Greeting
1 From Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ.
To those who received a faith equal to ours through the justice of our God and savior Jesus Christ.
2 May you have more and more grace and peace through the knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.
Christian life in outline
3 By his divine power the Lord has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of the one who called us by his own honor and glory. 4 Through his honor and glory he has given us his precious and wonderful promises, that you may share the divine nature and escape from the world’s immorality that sinful craving produces.
5 This is why you must make every effort to add moral excellence to your faith; and to moral excellence, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, endurance; and to endurance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, affection for others; and to affection for others, love. 8 If all these are yours and they are growing in you, they’ll keep you from becoming inactive and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 Whoever lacks these things is shortsighted and blind, forgetting that they were cleansed from their past sins.
10 Therefore, brothers and sisters, be eager to confirm your call and election. Do this and you will never ever be lost. 11 In this way you will receive a rich welcome into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
Reminder of the Christian life
12 So I’ll keep reminding you about these things, although you already know them and stand secure in the truth you have. 13 I think it’s right that I keep stirring up your memory, as long as I’m alive. 14 After all, our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I am about to depart from this life. 15 I’m eager for you always to remember these things after my death.
Christ’s return is true
16 We didn’t repeat crafty myths when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Quite the contrary, we witnessed his majesty with our own eyes. 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when a voice came to him from the magnificent glory, saying, “This is my dearly loved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.” 18 We ourselves heard this voice from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 In addition, we have a most reliable prophetic word, and you would do well to pay attention to it, just as you would to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Most important, you must know that no prophecy of scripture represents the prophet’s own understanding of things, 21 because no prophecy ever came by human will. Instead, men and women led by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
2 Peter 1
Revised Geneva Translation
1 Simon Peter, a servant and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, to you who have obtained equal precious faith with us, by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you, through the acknowledging of God, and of Jesus Christ our Lord.
3 His divine power has given us all things pertaining to life and godliness, through the acknowledging of Him Who has called us to Glory and virtue;
4 by which most great and precious promises are given to us, so that by them you could be partakers of the divine nature (in that you flee the corruption which is in the world through lust).
5 Therefore, give all diligence to this. Moreover, join virtue with your faith; and with virtue, knowledge;
6 and with knowledge, temperance; and with temperance, patience; and with patience, godliness;
7 and with godliness, brotherly kindness; and with brotherly kindness, love.
8 For if these things are among you, and abound, they will cause you to be neither idle nor unfruitful in the acknowledging of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 For the one who does not have these things is blind and short-sighted and has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 Therefore, brothers, give all the more diligence to making your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you shall never fall.
11 For by this means shall entry into the everlasting Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be abundantly provided to you.
12 Therefore, I will not be negligent to always remind you of these things (though you have knowledge and are established in the present truth).
13 For I think it right (as long as I am in this body) to stir you up by reminding you.
14 I know that the time is at hand that I must lay down this, my body, just as our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me.
15 Therefore, I will always endeavor, so that you also may be reminded of these things after my departing.
16 For we did not follow cunningly-devised fables when we opened to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. But we saw His majesty with our own eyes.
17 For He received honor and glory from God the Father when there came such a voice to Him from that excellent Glory: “This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well-pleased.”
18 And this voice we heard when it came from Heaven, being with Him on the Holy Mount.
19 We also have the enduring Word of the Prophets—to which you do well to pay attention, as to a light that shines in a dark place—until the Day dawns and the Day Star arise in your hearts.
20 So that you first know this: that no Prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 For the Prophecy did not come by the will of man. But holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
2 Peter 1
New International Version
1 Simon Peter, a servant(A) and apostle of Jesus Christ,(B)
To those who through the righteousness(C) of our God and Savior Jesus Christ(D) have received a faith as precious as ours:
2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance(E) through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.(F)
Confirming One’s Calling and Election
3 His divine power(G) has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him(H) who called us(I) by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises,(J) so that through them you may participate in the divine nature,(K) having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.(L)
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;(M) 6 and to knowledge, self-control;(N) and to self-control, perseverance;(O) and to perseverance, godliness;(P) 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.(Q) 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive(R) in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.(S) 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind,(T) forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.(U)
10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,[a] make every effort to confirm your calling(V) and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,(W) 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom(X) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(Y)
Prophecy of Scripture
12 So I will always remind you of these things,(Z) even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth(AA) you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory(AB) as long as I live in the tent of this body,(AC) 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside,(AD) as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.(AE) 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure(AF) you will always be able to remember these things.
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,(AG) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.(AH) 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[b](AI) 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.(AJ)
19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,(AK) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light(AL) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns(AM) and the morning star(AN) rises in your hearts.(AO) 20 Above all, you must understand(AP) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God(AQ) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(AR)
