Growth in Christian Virtue

1 [a]Simon Peter, a (A)bond-servant and (B)apostle of Jesus Christ,

To those who have received (C)a faith of the same [b]kind as ours, [c]by (D)the righteousness of (E)our God and Savior, Jesus Christ: 2 (F)Grace and peace be multiplied to you in (G)the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; 3 seeing that His (H)divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true (I)knowledge of Him who (J)called us [d]by His own glory and [e]excellence. 4 [f]For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent (K)promises, so that by them you may become (L)partakers of the divine nature, having (M)escaped the (N)corruption that is in (O)the world by lust. 5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith (P)supply (Q)moral [g]excellence, and in your moral excellence, (R)knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, (S)self-control, and in your self-control, (T)perseverance, and in your perseverance, (U)godliness, 7 and in your godliness, (V)brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor (W)unfruitful in the true (X)knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these qualities is (Y)blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his (Z)purification from his former sins. 10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His (AA)calling and (AB)choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never (AC)stumble; 11 for in this way the entrance into (AD)the eternal kingdom of our (AE)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be (AF)abundantly (AG)supplied to you.

12 Therefore, (AH)I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in (AI)the truth which is present with you. 13 I consider it (AJ)right, as long as I am in (AK)this earthly dwelling, to (AL)stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that (AM)the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, (AN)as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my (AO)departure you will be able to call these things to mind.

Eyewitnesses

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised (AP)tales when we made known to you the (AQ)power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were (AR)eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an [h](AS)utterance as this was [i]made to Him by the (AT)Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”— 18 and we ourselves heard this [j]utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the (AU)holy mountain.

19 [k]So we have (AV)the prophetic word made more (AW)sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to (AX)a lamp shining in a dark place, until the (AY)day dawns and the (AZ)morning star arises (BA)in your hearts. 20 But (BB)know this first of all, that (BC)no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for (BD)no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men (BE)moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Hälsning

1 Från Simeon Petrus, Jesu Kristi tjänare och apostel. Till dem som genom rättfärdigheten från vår Gud och Frälsare Jesus Kristus har fått samma dyrbara tro som vi. 2 (A) Nåd och frid vare med er i allt rikare mått genom kunskapen om Gud och vår Herre Jesus.

Att visa tron i sitt liv

3 (B) Hans gudomliga makt har skänkt oss allt vi behöver för liv och gudsfruktan genom kunskapen om honom som har kallat oss med sin härlighet och godhet[a]. 4 (C) Genom dessa har han gett oss sina stora och dyrbara löften, för att ni genom dem ska få del av gudomlig natur, sedan ni kommit undan det fördärv som på grund av begäret finns i världen.

5 (D) Gör därför allt ni kan för att i er tro visa dygd, i dygden insikt, 6 (E) i insikten självbehärskning, i självbehärskningen uthållighet, i uthålligheten gudsfruktan, 7 (F) i gudsfruktan syskonkärlek och i syskonkärleken kärlek till alla människor. 8 (G) För om allt detta finns hos er och får växa, blir ni inte overksamma eller utan frukt i er kunskap om vår Herre Jesus Kristus. 9 (H) Men den som saknar detta är närsynt och blind och har glömt att han blev renad från sina tidigare synder.

10 (I) Var därför desto ivrigare, bröder, att befästa er kallelse och utkorelse. Gör ni det ska ni aldrig någonsin falla, 11 för ni får en fri och öppen ingång till vår Herre och Frälsare Jesu Kristi eviga rike.

12 (J) Därför tänker jag ständigt påminna er om detta, trots att ni redan vet det och är befästa i den sanning som ni har. 13 (K) Jag ser det som min plikt att väcka er med mina påminnelser så länge jag är kvar i detta tält[b], 14 (L) för jag vet att jag snart[c] ska lägga av mig mitt tält. Det har vår Herre Jesus Kristus visat mig. 15 Men jag vill göra vad jag kan för att ni också efter min bortgång alltid ska minnas detta.

Inte myter utan Guds uppenbarelse

16 (M) Det var inga utstuderade myter vi följde när vi förkunnade vår Herre Jesu Kristi makt och hans ankomst för er, utan vi var ögonvittnen till hans majestät. 17 (N) Han fick ära och härlighet från Gud Fadern när rösten kom till honom från den majestätiska Härligheten[d]: "Han är min Son, min Älskade. I honom har jag min glädje." 18 Den rösten hörde vi själva från himlen när vi var med honom på det heliga berget.

19 (O) Så mycket fastare står nu det profetiska ordet för oss, och ni gör rätt i att hålla er till det som till ett ljus som lyser på en dyster plats tills dagen gryr och morgonstjärnan[e] går upp i era hjärtan. 20 Framför allt ska ni veta att ingen profetia i Skriften har kommit till genom egen tolkning[f]. 21 (P) Ingen profetia har burits fram genom någon människas vilja, utan ledda av den helige Ande har människor talat vad de fått från Gud.

1 Simón[a] Pedro, siervo(A) y apóstol de Jesucristo(B), a los que han recibido una fe como[b] la nuestra(C), mediante[c] la justicia(D) de nuestro Dios y Salvador, Jesucristo(E): 2 Gracia y paz os sean multiplicadas(F) en el conocimiento de Dios y de Jesús nuestro Señor(G).

Virtudes del cristiano

3 Pues su divino poder(H) nos ha concedido todo cuanto concierne a la vida y a la piedad, mediante el verdadero conocimiento de aquel(I) que nos llamó por[d] su gloria(J) y excelencia[e], 4 por medio de las cuales nos ha concedido sus preciosas y maravillosas promesas(K), a fin de que por ellas lleguéis a ser partícipes de la naturaleza divina(L), habiendo escapado(M) de la corrupción(N) que hay en el mundo(O) por causa de la concupiscencia. 5 Por esta razón también, obrando con toda diligencia, añadid(P) a vuestra fe, virtud(Q), y a la virtud, conocimiento(R); 6 al conocimiento, dominio propio(S), al dominio propio, perseverancia(T), y a la perseverancia, piedad(U), 7 a la piedad, fraternidad y a la fraternidad, amor(V). 8 Pues estas virtudes, al estar en vosotros y al abundar, no os dejarán ociosos[f] ni estériles(W) en el verdadero conocimiento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo(X). 9 Porque el que carece de estas virtudes es ciego(Y) o corto de vista, habiendo olvidado la purificación(Z) de sus pecados pasados. 10 Así que, hermanos, sed tanto más diligentes para hacer firme vuestro llamado(AA) y elección(AB) de parte de Dios; porque mientras hagáis[g] estas cosas nunca tropezaréis(AC); 11 pues de esta manera os será concedida(AD) ampliamente(AE) la entrada al reino eterno(AF) de nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo(AG).

Propósito de la carta

12 Por tanto, siempre estaré listo para recordaros estas cosas, aunque vosotros ya las sabéis(AH) y habéis sido confirmados en la verdad que está presente en vosotros(AI). 13 Y considero justo(AJ), mientras esté en este cuerpo[h](AK), estimularos recordándoos(AL) estas cosas[i], 14 sabiendo que mi separación del cuerpo[j] terrenal es inminente(AM), tal como me lo ha declarado nuestro Señor Jesucristo(AN). 15 También yo procuraré con diligencia, que en todo tiempo, después de mi partida(AO), podáis recordar estas cosas.

Testigos de la gloria de Cristo

16 Porque cuando os dimos a conocer el poder y la venida de nuestro Señor Jesucristo(AP), no seguimos fábulas ingeniosamente inventadas(AQ), sino que fuimos testigos oculares de su majestad(AR). 17 Pues cuando Él recibió honor y gloria de Dios Padre, la majestuosa Gloria(AS) le hizo esta declaración[k](AT): Este es mi Hijo amado en quien me he complacido; 18 y nosotros mismos escuchamos esta declaración[l], hecha desde el cielo cuando estábamos con Él en el monte santo(AU).

La palabra profética

19 Y así tenemos la palabra profética(AV) más segura[m](AW), a la cual hacéis bien en prestar atención como a una lámpara(AX) que brilla en el lugar oscuro, hasta que el día despunte(AY) y el lucero de la mañana(AZ) aparezca en vuestros corazones(BA). 20 Pero ante todo sabed esto(BB), que ninguna profecía(BC) de la Escritura es asunto de interpretación personal, 21 pues ninguna profecía fue dada[n] jamás por un acto de voluntad humana(BD), sino que hombres inspirados[o] por el Espíritu Santo hablaron de parte de Dios[p](BE).

1 Simon Peter, a servant(A) and apostle of Jesus Christ,(B)

To those who through the righteousness(C) of our God and Savior Jesus Christ(D) have received a faith as precious as ours:

2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance(E) through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.(F)

Confirming One’s Calling and Election

3 His divine power(G) has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him(H) who called us(I) by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises,(J) so that through them you may participate in the divine nature,(K) having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.(L)

5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;(M) 6 and to knowledge, self-control;(N) and to self-control, perseverance;(O) and to perseverance, godliness;(P) 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.(Q) 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive(R) in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.(S) 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind,(T) forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.(U)

10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,[a] make every effort to confirm your calling(V) and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble,(W) 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom(X) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(Y)

Prophecy of Scripture

12 So I will always remind you of these things,(Z) even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth(AA) you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory(AB) as long as I live in the tent of this body,(AC) 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside,(AD) as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.(AE) 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure(AF) you will always be able to remember these things.

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power,(AG) but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.(AH) 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”[b](AI) 18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.(AJ)

19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable,(AK) and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light(AL) shining in a dark place, until the day dawns(AM) and the morning star(AN) rises in your hearts.(AO) 20 Above all, you must understand(AP) that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God(AQ) as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.(AR)

1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.

10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.

13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

15 Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
