The Day of the Lord

Dear friends,(A) this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders(B) to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets(C) and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.(D)

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”(A)

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”(B)

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”(C)

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?”(D) He said, “Lord, you know all things;(E) you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.(F)

Above all, you must understand that in the last days(A) scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.(B) They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?(C) Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”(D) But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word(E) the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.(F) By these waters also the world of that time(G) was deluged and destroyed.(H) By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,(I) being kept for the day of judgment(J) and destruction of the ungodly.

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.(K) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(L) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(M) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(N)

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(O) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(P) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(Q) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a](R)

11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward(S) to the day of God and speed its coming.[b](T) That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.(U) 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth,(V) where righteousness dwells.

43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,(A) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready,(B) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant,(C) whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.(D) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.(E) 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.(F) 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(G)

14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless(A) and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience(B) means salvation,(C) just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.(D) 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable(E) people distort,(F) as they do the other Scriptures,(G) to their own destruction.

17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard(H) so that you may not be carried away by the error(I) of the lawless(J) and fall from your secure position.(K) 18 But grow in the grace(L) and knowledge(M) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(N) To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.(O)
