La promesa de la venida del Señor
3 Amados(A), esta es ya la segunda carta que les escribo, en las cuales, como recordatorio, despierto en ustedes su sincero entendimiento[a](B), 2 para que recuerden las palabras dichas de antemano(C) por los santos profetas(D), y el mandamiento del Señor y Salvador(E) declarado por los apóstoles de ustedes. 3 Ante todo, sepan esto(F): que en los últimos días(G) vendrán burladores(H) con su sarcasmo, siguiendo sus propias pasiones(I), 4 y diciendo: «¿Dónde está la promesa(J) de Su venida(K)? Porque desde que los padres durmieron[b](L), todo continúa tal como estaba desde el principio de la creación(M)».
5 Pues cuando dicen esto, no se dan cuenta de que[c] los cielos existían desde hace mucho tiempo(N), y también la tierra, surgida del agua y establecida entre las aguas(O) por la palabra de Dios, 6 por lo cual el mundo de entonces fue destruido, siendo inundado(P) por el agua(Q). 7 Pero los cielos y la tierra actuales(R) están reservados por Su palabra para el fuego(S), guardados para el día del juicio y de la destrucción de los impíos(T).
El día del Señor
8 Pero, amados(U), no ignoren esto: que para el Señor un día es como mil años, y mil años como un día(V). 9 El Señor no se tarda(W) en cumplir Su promesa, según algunos entienden la tardanza, sino que es paciente(X) para con ustedes[d], no queriendo que nadie perezca, sino que todos vengan al arrepentimiento[e](Y). 10 Pero el día del Señor(Z) vendrá como ladrón(AA), en el cual los cielos pasarán(AB) con gran estruendo, y los elementos serán destruidos con fuego[f] intenso, y la tierra y las obras que hay en ella serán quemadas[g](AC).
11 Puesto que todas estas cosas han de ser destruidas de esta manera, ¡qué clase de personas no deben ser ustedes en santa conducta y en piedad, 12 esperando y apresurando la venida del día de Dios(AD), en[h] el cual los cielos serán destruidos por fuego[i](AE) y los elementos(AF) se fundirán con intenso calor! 13 Pero, según Su promesa(AG), nosotros esperamos nuevos cielos y nueva tierra(AH), en los cuales mora la justicia(AI).
Exhortación final
14 Por tanto(AJ), amados(AK), puesto que ustedes aguardan estas cosas, procuren con diligencia ser hallados(AL) por Él en paz, sin mancha e irreprensibles(AM). 15 Consideren la paciencia(AN) de nuestro Señor como salvación, tal como les escribió también nuestro amado hermano Pablo(AO), según la sabiduría que le fue dada(AP). 16 Asimismo en todas sus cartas habla en ellas de esto(AQ); en las cuales hay algunas cosas difíciles de entender(AR), que los ignorantes e inestables(AS) tuercen, como también tuercen el resto de las Escrituras(AT), para su propia perdición[j].
17 Por tanto, amados(AU), sabiendo esto de antemano, estén en guardia(AV), no sea que arrastrados por el error(AW) de hombres libertinos[k](AX), caigan(AY) de su firmeza. 18 Antes bien, crezcan en la gracia y el conocimiento(AZ) de nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo(BA). A Él sea la gloria ahora y hasta el día de la eternidad(BB). Amén.

God’s Promise Is Not Slack(A)
3 Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle (in both of which (B)I stir up your pure minds by way of reminder), 2 that you may be mindful of the words (C)which were spoken before by the holy prophets, (D)and of the commandment of [a]us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, 3 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, (E)walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of (F)creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget: that (G)by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth (H)standing out of water and in the water, 6 (I)by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But (J)the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for (K)fire until the day of judgment and [b]perdition of ungodly men.
8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and (L)a thousand years as one day. 9 (M)The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but (N)is longsuffering toward [c]us, (O)not willing that any should perish but (P)that all should come to repentance.
The Day of the Lord
10 But (Q)the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which (R)the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be [d]burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be (S)in holy conduct and godliness, 12 (T)looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will (U)be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will (V)melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for (W)new heavens and a (X)new earth in which righteousness dwells.
Be Steadfast
14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent (Y)to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that (Z)the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his (AA)epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the (AB)rest of the Scriptures.
17 You therefore, beloved, (AC)since you know this beforehand, (AD)beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 (AE)but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
(AF)To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

The Day of the Lord
3 Dear friends,(A) this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders(B) to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2 I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets(C) and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.(D)
3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days(E) scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.(F) 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?(G) Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”(H) 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word(I) the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.(J) 6 By these waters also the world of that time(K) was deluged and destroyed.(L) 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,(M) being kept for the day of judgment(N) and destruction of the ungodly.
8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.(O) 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(P) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(Q) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(R)
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(S) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(T) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(U) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a](V)
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward(W) to the day of God and speed its coming.[b](X) That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.(Y) 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth,(Z) where righteousness dwells.
14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless(AA) and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience(AB) means salvation,(AC) just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.(AD) 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable(AE) people distort,(AF) as they do the other Scriptures,(AG) to their own destruction.
17 Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard(AH) so that you may not be carried away by the error(AI) of the lawless(AJ) and fall from your secure position.(AK) 18 But grow in the grace(AL) and knowledge(AM) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.(AN) To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.(AO)

Het is zeker dat Jezus terugkomt
3 Dit is de tweede brief die ik jullie schrijf, lieve broeders en zusters. Met deze brieven probeer ik ervoor te zorgen dat jullie helder zullen denken. 2 Ik wil dat jullie zullen denken aan wat Gods profeten vroeger hebben gezegd. Ook aan wat de boodschappers van onze Heer en Redder jullie hebben geleerd. 3 Onthoud vooral goed dat er aan het eind van de tijd mensen zullen komen die er maar op los leven. 4 Ze zullen spottend tegen jullie zeggen: "Waar blijft Hij nou? Hij zou toch komen? Maar er is nog nooit iets veranderd. Alles blijft zoals het altijd is geweest." 5 Want ze willen er expres niet aan denken dat er door het woord van God al eerder een hemel en aarde zijn geweest. 6 En dat die aarde, die uit het water ontstond en door het water bestond, ook weer door het water is vernietigd.[a] 7 Maar de hemel[b] en de aarde van nu worden door datzelfde woord van God als een schat bewaard. Nu niet voor het water, maar voor het vuur. Dat is het vuur van de dag dat God over de mensen zal rechtspreken. Op die dag zullen de mensen die zich niets van God aantrekken, vernietigd worden.
8 Maar vergeet niet, lieve broeders en zusters, dat één dag bij de Heer is als duizend jaar, en dat duizend jaar is als één dag. 9 Sommigen van jullie denken dat de Heer vergeet te doen wat Hij heeft beloofd. Maar dat is niet zo. Nee, Hij wacht en stelt het uit omdat Hij geduld heeft met ons. Want Hij wil niet dat er mensen verloren zullen gaan. Hij wil dat alle mensen in Hem zullen gaan geloven en zullen gaan leven zoals Hij het wil.
10 Maar de dag van de Heer zal net zo onverwachts komen als een dief in de nacht. Op die dag zal de hemel dreunend verdwijnen. Alles waaruit de aarde bestaat en alles wat op aarde is gedaan, zal verbranden.
11 Alle dingen zullen dus verdwijnen. Daarom moeten jullie erg je best doen om te leven zoals God het wil en om Hem te dienen. 12 Kijk aldoor vol verwachting uit naar de dag van God. Op die dag zal de hemel verbranden en alles waaruit de aarde bestaat zal in het vuur wegsmelten en verbranden. 13 Maar God heeft beloofd dat Hij een nieuwe hemel en een nieuwe aarde zal geven. Dat zal een aarde zijn waar iedereen leeft zoals Hij het wil. En daar kijken we vol verlangen naar uit.
14 Terwijl we hierop wachten, lieve broeders en zusters, moeten jullie erg je best doen om te leven zoals Hij het wil. Zorg dat jullie geestelijk schoon en zuiver zullen zijn als Hij komt. Leef in vrede met elkaar. 15 Bedenk dat we gered worden dankzij het geduld en de liefde van de Heer. Daar heeft ook onze geliefde broeder Paulus aan jullie over geschreven. Hij schrijft daarover vanuit de wijsheid die hij van God gekregen heeft. 16 Trouwens, in al zijn brieven schrijft hij over deze dingen. Soms zijn die brieven moeilijk te begrijpen. En ze worden verkeerd uitgelegd door mensen die de Heer niet goed kennen en die geen sterk geloof hebben. Zij leggen ze uit op een manier die hen het beste uitkomt. Dat doen ze ook met de andere brieven en met de Boeken. Maar daardoor zal het uiteindelijk slecht met hen aflopen.
Slot
17 Lieve broeders en zusters, omdat jullie deze dingen nu van tevoren weten, kunnen jullie op je hoede zijn. Dan zullen jullie je niet laten meeslepen door de verkeerde dingen die slechte mensen doen, en zullen jullie je geloof niet verliezen. 18 Zorg ervoor dat jullie geestelijk groeien, en dat jullie onze Heer en Redder, Jezus Christus, steeds beter leren kennen. Dan kan de Heer altijd goed voor jullie zijn. Van Hem is alle macht en eer, nu en voor eeuwig.
