Môi-se Ra Đời
2 Một người trong nhà Lê-vi đi cưới một thiếu nữ Lê-vi. 2 Cô này thụ thai và sinh một bé trai. Thấy con mình xinh đẹp, cô giấu con trong ba tháng. 3 Nhưng khi thấy không thể nào giấu con lâu hơn nữa, cô lấy một cái thúng bằng cói đem trát nhựa thông và hắc ín, đặt con vào thúng rồi đem thả giữa các bụi sậy dọc bờ sông Ninh. 4 Chị của cậu bé đứng ở đằng xa để xem thử có gì xảy ra cho em mình không.
5 Lúc ấy, công chúa Ai-cập xuống sông tắm trong khi các nữ tì đi dọc trên bờ sông. Công chúa thấy cái thúng giữa các bụi sậy nên sai nữ tì vớt thúng lên. 6 Khi mở thúng ra, công chúa thấy cậu bé đang khóc, công chúa động lòng thương cậu bé, nói rằng: “Đây là con của người Hê-bơ-rơ.”
7 Chị cậu bé nói với công chúa: “Công chúa muốn tôi kiếm một bà vú nuôi Hê-bơ-rơ để nuôi em bé cho công chúa không?” 8 Công chúa đáp: “Được, đi đi.” Cô chị liền chạy đi gọi mẹ em bé đến. 9 Công chúa bảo bà: “Bà đem em bé này về nuôi bú cho ta, ta sẽ trả công cho.” Bà nhận đứa bé và nuôi vú nó. 10 Khi đứa bé đã khôn lớn, bà dẫn nó vào cung trao cho công chúa. Công chúa nhận cậu bé làm con, đặt tên là Môi-se vì nói rằng: “Ta đã cứu vớt nó ra khỏi nước.”
Môi-se Trốn Qua Ma-đi-an
11 Môi-se đã trưởng thành. Một ngày kia, ông đến thăm anh chị em của mình và thấy họ làm việc cực nhọc. Ông cũng thấy một người Ai-cập đánh đập một người Hê-bơ-rơ là anh chị em của mình. 12 Ngó quanh quất không thấy ai, Môi-se liền giết người Ai-cập và đem vùi dưới cát. 13 Qua hôm sau, ông lại ra và thấy hai người Hê-bơ-rơ đang đánh lộn. Môi-se hỏi người có lỗi rằng: “Sao lại đánh anh em mình?”
14 Người ấy nói: “Ai đặt anh làm người cai trị và xét xử chúng tôi? Anh định giết tôi như đã giết người Ai-cập sao?” Môi-se sợ hãi, nghĩ thầm rằng: “Việc ta làm chắc đã bại lộ rồi.” 15 Khi việc đến tai Pha-ra-ôn, vua tìm bắt Môi-se để xử tử, nhưng ông đã tẩu thoát lẩn tránh Pha-ra-ôn qua xứ Ma-đi-an và đến ngồi bên một giếng nước. 16 Một thầy tế lễ Ma-đi-an có bảy con gái. Các cô này đến giếng để múc nước đổ đầy các máng cho bầy gia súc của cha họ uống. 17 Có mấy người chăn chiên đến đuổi họ, nhưng Môi-se đứng ra bênh vực các cô gái và cho bầy của họ uống.
18 Khi họ về đến nhà, cha họ là Rê-tu-ên hỏi: “Sao hôm nay các con về sớm vậy?” 19 Họ đáp: “Có một người Ai-cập giải cứu chúng con thoát khỏi tay bọn chăn chiên và còn múc nước cho chúng con và bầy gia súc uống.” 20 Người cha hỏi tiếp: “Người ấy đâu? Sao các con bỏ đi vậy? Hãy mời người ấy ăn bữa cơm.”[a] 21 Môi-se bằng lòng ở lại với Rê-u-ên và ông gả con gái là Sê-phô-ra cho Môi-se. 22 Sê-phô-ra sinh một con trai. Môi-se đặt tên cho con là Ghẹt-sôn[b] vì nói rằng: “Tôi là kiều dân nơi đất ngoại quốc.”
23 Trong khoảng thời gian khá dài đó, vua Ai-cập qua đời. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ta thán dưới ách nô lệ và tiếng khóc than của họ lên đến Đức Chúa Trời. 24 Đức Chúa Trời nghe tiếng ta thán đó và nhớ lại giao ước Ngài đã lập với Áp-ra-ham, Y-sác và Gia-cốp. 25 Đức Chúa Trời đoái xem dân Y-sơ-ra-ên và lưu tâm đến họ.

Moses Is Born
2 A man and a woman from the tribe of Levi got married. 2 She became pregnant and had a son by her husband. She saw that her baby was a fine child. And she hid him for three months. 3 After that, she couldn’t hide him any longer. So she got a basket made out of the stems of tall grass. She coated the basket with tar. She placed the child in the basket. Then she put it in the tall grass that grew along the bank of the Nile River. 4 The child’s sister wasn’t very far away. She wanted to see what would happen to him.
5 Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile River to take a bath. Her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket in the tall grass. So she sent her female slave to get it. 6 When she opened it, Pharaoh’s daughter saw the baby. He was crying. She felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.
7 Then his sister spoke to Pharaoh’s daughter. She asked, “Do you want me to go and get one of the Hebrew women? She could breast-feed the baby for you.”
8 “Yes. Go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and feed him for me. I’ll pay you.” So the woman took the baby and fed him. 10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter. And he became her son. She named him Moses. She said, “I pulled him out of the water.”
Moses Escapes to Midian
11 Moses grew up. One day, he went out to where his own people were. He watched them while they were hard at work. He saw an Egyptian hitting a Hebrew man. The man was one of Moses’ own people. 12 Moses looked around and didn’t see anyone. So he killed the Egyptian. Then he hid his body in the sand. 13 The next day Moses went out again. He saw two Hebrew men fighting. He asked the one who had started the fight a question. He said, “Why are you hitting another Hebrew man?”
14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking about killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses became afraid. He thought, “People must have heard about what I did.”
15 When Pharaoh heard about what had happened, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses escaped from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian. There he sat down by a well. 16 A priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came to fill the stone tubs with water. They wanted to give water to their father’s flock. 17 Some shepherds came along and chased the girls away. But Moses got up and helped them. Then he gave water to their flock.
18 The girls returned to their father Reuel. He asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”
19 They answered, “An Egyptian saved us from the shepherds. He even got water for us and gave it to the flock.”
20 “Where is he?” Reuel asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.”
21 Moses agreed to stay with the man. And the man gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses to be his wife. 22 Zipporah had a son by him. Moses named him Gershom. That’s because Moses said, “I’m an outsider in a strange land.”
23 After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The people of Israel groaned because they were slaves. They also cried out to God. Their cry for help went up to him. 24 God heard their groans. He remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 25 So God looked on the Israelites with concern for them.

The Birth of Moses
2 Now a man of the tribe of Levi(A) married a Levite woman,(B) 2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine(C) child, she hid him for three months.(D) 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus(E) basket[a] for him and coated it with tar and pitch.(F) Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds(G) along the bank of the Nile. 4 His sister(H) stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank.(I) She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.
7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”
8 “Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named(J) him Moses,[b] saying, “I drew(K) him out of the water.”
Moses Flees to Midian
11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people(L) were and watched them at their hard labor.(M) He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?”(N)
14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us?(O) Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”
15 When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill(P) Moses, but Moses fled(Q) from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian,(R) where he sat down by a well. 16 Now a priest of Midian(S) had seven daughters, and they came to draw water(T) and fill the troughs(U) to water their father’s flock. 17 Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue(V) and watered their flock.(W)
18 When the girls returned to Reuel(X) their father, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?”
19 They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.”
20 “And where is he?” Reuel asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.”(Y)
21 Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah(Z) to Moses in marriage. 22 Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom,[c](AA) saying, “I have become a foreigner(AB) in a foreign land.”
23 During that long period,(AC) the king of Egypt died.(AD) The Israelites groaned in their slavery(AE) and cried out, and their cry(AF) for help because of their slavery went up to God. 24 God heard their groaning and he remembered(AG) his covenant(AH) with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. 25 So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned(AI) about them.
