De tio buden på nya stentavlor
34 Herren sa till Mose: Hugg ut två stentavlor, likadana som de förra. Sedan ska jag på nytt skriva de ord som fanns på tavlorna du slog sönder.
2 Gör dig klar att i morgon bitti komma upp på berget Sinai och möta mig där på toppen av berget.
3 Ingen får gå med dig, och ingen får heller vara någonstans på berget. Låt inte heller era hjordar gå och beta i närheten av berget.
4 Mose högg ut två stentavlor, lika de första han haft, och steg tidigt på morgonen upp på berget Sinai, som Herren hade sagt till honom, och han hade tavlorna med sig.
5 Då steg Herren ner i molnpelaren och ställde sig bredvid honom och gick förbi honom och ropade ut sitt namn.
6 Jag är Herren, den nådefulle och barmhärtige Guden, ropade han, som inte lätt blir vred men är stor i kärlek och sanning.
7 Jag, Herren, bevisar min trofasta kärlek till tusentals människor genom att förlåta deras synder, men jag låter inte den skyldige slippa straffet utan utkräver det av syndarens barn och barnbarn ända ner till tredje och fjärde generation.
8 Mose föll då ner inför Herrens ansikte och tillbad
9 och sa: Om det är sant att jag funnit nåd inför dina ögon, Herre, gå då med oss till löfteslandet. Ja, det är ett motspänstigt och envist folk, men förlåt oss våra synder och missgärningar och ta emot oss som dina egna.
10 Herren svarade: Ja, jag ska ingå ett förbund med er. Jag ska göra sådana under som aldrig tidigare gjorts någonstans på hela jorden, och hela Israels folk ska få se Herrens makt, den väldiga makt som jag ska uppenbara på er.
11 Er del av förbundet blir att hålla alla mina bud. Då ska jag fördriva amoreerna, kananeerna, hetiterna, perisseerna, hiveerna och jebuseerna för er.
12 Men var mycket noga med att inte kompromissa med folket i det land ni kommer till, för om ni gör det kommer ni snart att vandra på deras ogudaktiga vägar.
13 I stället ska ni riva ner deras avgudaaltaren, krossa deras stenstoder och hugga ner deras heliga träpålar.
14 Ni ska inte tillbe någon annan gud än Herren, för han är en Gud som kräver absolut trohet och fullkomlig överlåtelse.
15 Ni ska inte sluta fredsfördrag av något slag med de folk som bor i landet, för de är andligt sett prostituerade och otrogna mot mig genom att de offrar till andra gudar. Om ni blir vänner med dem och någon av dem inbjuder er att vara med och tillbe hans avgud, ligger det nära till hands att ni gör det.
16 Och ni kommer att acceptera att deras döttrar blir hustrur åt era söner. Då kommer era söner att bli otrogna mot mig genom att tillbe sina hustrurs gudar.
17 Se till att ni inte gjuter några fler avgudar åt er!
18 Var noga med att hålla det osyrade brödets högtid under sju dagar, precis som jag har sagt åt er att göra under den bestämda tiden i april månad. Det var ju i den månaden som ni lämnade Egypten.
19 Allt förstfött av hankön ska tillhöra mig, även boskap, får och getter.
20 En förstfödd åsnefåle kan lösas med ett lamm, men om någon inte vill lösa in den, ska han krossa dess nacke. Men era förstfödda söner måste allesammans lösas in. Ingen får komma inför mig tomhänt.
21 Även under sådd och skörd ska ni bara arbeta sex dagar och vila på den sjunde.
22 Ni ska fira veckohögtiden i början av veteskörden och bärgningshögtiden vid årets slut.
23 Vid dessa högtider, liksom vid påsk, alltså tre gånger om året, ska hela den manliga befolkningen i Israel träda fram inför Herren.
24 Ingen ska anfalla eller erövra ert land när ni går fram inför Herren dessa tre gånger om året. Jag ska fördriva nationerna åt er och utvidga era gränser.
25 Ni får inte använda jäst bröd vid era offer till mig och ingenting av påsklammets kött får lämnas kvar till följande morgon.
26 Det bästa av den första skörden varje år ska ni ta med er till Herrens, er Guds, tabernakel. En killing får ni inte koka i dess moders mjölk.
27 Och Herren sa till Mose: Skriv ner dessa lagar som jag har gett dig, för de är villkoren för mitt avtal med dig och med Israel.
28 Mose stannade på berget hos Herren i fyrtio dagar och fyrtio nätter, och han varken åt eller drack under den tiden. Medan han var där skrev Gud ner förbundet, de tio budorden, på stentavlorna.
29 När Mose kom tillbaka ner från berget med stentavlorna, visste han inte att hans ansikte strålade av att han varit tillsammans med Gud.
30 Hans ansikte sken så att Aron och folket i Israel var rädda för att närma sig honom.
31 Men Mose ropade till sig Aron och folkets ledare och talade med dem.
32 Senare kom allt folket till honom, och han gav dem de budord som Herren hade gett honom uppe på berget.
33 När Mose hade slutat tala med dem hängde han en slöja över sitt ansikte,
34 men varje gång han gick in för att tala med Herren, tog han av slöjan. När han kom ut igen talade han om för folket vilka instruktioner Gud hade gett honom,
35 och folket kunde se hur hans ansikte strålade. Sedan hängde han på sig slöjan igen till nästa gång han skulle tala med Gud.

34 Herren sade till Mose: "Hugg ut två stentavlor åt dig, likadana som de förra. På dem skall jag skriva samma ord som stod på de förra tavlorna, som du slog sönder. 2 Var redo tidigt i morgon. Du skall då på morgonen stiga upp på Sinai berg och ställa dig på bergets topp för att möta mig där. 3 Ingen får stiga upp tillsammans med dig, och på hela berget får inte heller någon annan visa sig. Får och nötboskap får inte heller gå i bet framför detta berg."
4 Mose högg ut två stentavlor, likadana som de förra, och tidigt följande morgon gick han upp på Sinai berg, så som Herren hade befallt honom, och han tog med sig de båda stentavlorna. 5 Då steg Herren ner i molnskyn och ställde sig där nära intill honom och ropade ut Herrens namn. 6 Och Herren gick förbi honom där han stod och ropade: " Herren! Herren! - en Gud, barmhärtig och nådig, sen till vrede och stor i nåd och sanning, 7 som bevarar nåd mot tusenden och förlåter överträdelse, synd och skuld, men som inte låter någon bli ostraffad utan låter straffet för fädernas missgärning drabba barnen och barnbarnen, ja, tredje och fjärde släktledet." 8 Då böjde sig Mose hastigt ner mot jorden och tillbad. 9 Han sade: "Herre, om jag har funnit nåd för dina ögon, så må Herren gå mitt ibland oss, fastän det är ett hårdnackat folk, och förlåt oss vår synd och skuld och gör oss till din arvedel."
Förbundet förnyas
10 Herren svarade: "Se, jag sluter ett förbund: Inför hela ditt folk skall jag göra sådana under som inte har gjorts på hela jorden eller hos något folk. Och hela det folk som du är mitt ibland skall se Herrens gärning, ty det som jag gör med dig är förunderligt stort. 11 Rätta dig efter det jag i dag befaller dig. Se, jag skall driva bort amoreerna, kananeerna, hetiterna, perisseerna, hiveerna och jebusiterna för dig. 12 Tag dig till vara för att sluta förbund med invånarna i det land dit du kommer, så att de inte blir till en snara för dig. 13 I stället skall ni bryta ner deras altaren, krossa deras stoder och hugga ner deras aseror. 14 Du skall inte tillbe någon annan gud, ty Herren heter Nitälskare. En nitälskande Gud är han. 15 Du skall inte sluta något förbund med invånarna i landet, eftersom de trolöst håller sig till sina gudar och offrar åt dem. När de då inbjuder dig kommer du att äta av deras offer. 16 Du kommer också att ta deras döttrar till hustrur åt dina söner, och när då deras döttrar trolöst håller sig till sina gudar kommer de också att förleda dina söner att trolöst hålla sig till dem.
17 Du skall inte göra några gjutna gudar åt dig.
18 Du skall fira det osyrade brödets högtid. I sju dagar skall du äta osyrat bröd, som jag har befallt dig, på den bestämda tiden i månaden Aviv. Ty det var i månaden Aviv som du drog ut ur Egypten.
19 Allt som först kommer ut ur moderlivet är mitt, liksom allt förstfött av hankön bland din boskap, det må vara oxe eller får. 20 Men ett förstfött åsneföl skall du lösa ut med ett lamm, och om du inte vill lösa ut det skall du krossa nacken på det. Varje förstfödd bland dina söner skall du lösa ut. Ingen skall träda fram inför mitt ansikte med tomma händer.
21 Sex dagar skall du arbeta, men på sjunde dagen skall du vila. Också under plöjningstiden och skördetiden skall du ha vilodag.
22 Du skall fira veckohögtiden när du skördar det första vetet och bärgningshögtiden vid årets slut. 23 Tre gånger om året skall alla dina män träda fram inför din Herre, Herren, Israels Gud. 24 Ty jag skall driva undan folk för dig och utvidga ditt område. Ingen skall stå efter ditt land, när du tre gånger om året drar upp för att träda fram inför Herrens, din Guds, ansikte.
25 Du skall inte offra blodet av mitt slaktoffer tillsammans med något som är syrat. Påskhögtidens slaktoffer skall inte lämnas kvar över natten till morgonen.
26 Det bästa av din marks förstlingsfrukter skall du föra till Herrens, din Guds, hus.
Du skall inte koka en killing i mjölken från dess mor."
27 Herren sade till Mose: "Skriv upp åt dig dessa ord, ty i enlighet med dessa ord har jag slutit ett förbund med dig och med Israel." 28 Och han blev kvar där hos Herren i fyrtio dagar och fyrtio nätter utan att äta och dricka. Och han skrev på tavlorna förbundets ord, de tio orden.
Strålglansen från Moses ansikte
29 När Mose sedan steg ner från Sinai berg och på vägen ner hade med sig vittnesbördets båda tavlor, visste han inte att hans ansiktes hy strålade, därför att han hade talat med Herren. 30 Aron och alla Israels barn såg Mose, och se, hans ansiktes hy strålade. Och de fruktade för att komma nära honom. 31 Men Mose ropade till dem. Då vände Aron och menighetens alla hövdingar tillbaka till honom, och Mose talade till dem. 32 Därefter kom alla Israels barn fram till honom, och han framhöll för dem allt som Herren hade sagt honom på Sinai berg. 33 När Mose hade talat färdigt till dem hängde han en slöja för ansiktet. 34 Varje gång som Mose trädde fram inför Herrens ansikte för att tala med honom, tog han av sig slöjan till dess han gick ut igen. När han kom ut, talade han till Israels barn det som han fått befallning om. 35 Och Israels barn såg att Moses ansikte strålade, och Mose hängde slöjan över ansiktet igen till dess han gick in för att tala med Herren.

The New Stone Tablets
34 The Lord said to Moses, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones,(A) and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets,(B) which you broke.(C) 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai.(D) Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain;(E) not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”
4 So Moses chiseled(F) out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.(G) 5 Then the Lord came down in the cloud(H) and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord.(I) 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate(J) and gracious God, slow to anger,(K) abounding in love(L) and faithfulness,(M) 7 maintaining love to thousands,(N) and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.(O) Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished;(P) he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.”(Q)
8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 9 “Lord,” he said, “if I have found favor(R) in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us.(S) Although this is a stiff-necked(T) people, forgive our wickedness and our sin,(U) and take us as your inheritance.”(V)
10 Then the Lord said: “I am making a covenant(W) with you. Before all your people I will do wonders(X) never before done in any nation in all the world.(Y) The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. 11 Obey what I command(Z) you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.(AA) 12 Be careful not to make a treaty(AB) with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare(AC) among you. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.[a](AD) 14 Do not worship any other god,(AE) for the Lord, whose name(AF) is Jealous, is a jealous God.(AG)
15 “Be careful not to make a treaty(AH) with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute(AI) themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices.(AJ) 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives(AK) for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods,(AL) they will lead your sons to do the same.
17 “Do not make any idols.(AM)
18 “Celebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread.(AN) For seven days eat bread made without yeast,(AO) as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv,(AP) for in that month you came out of Egypt.
19 “The first offspring(AQ) of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.(AR) Redeem all your firstborn sons.(AS)
“No one is to appear before me empty-handed.(AT)
21 “Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest;(AU) even during the plowing season and harvest(AV) you must rest.
22 “Celebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits(AW) of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering(AX) at the turn of the year.[b] 23 Three times(AY) a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations(AZ) before you and enlarge your territory,(BA) and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.
25 “Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast,(BB) and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning.(BC)
26 “Bring the best of the firstfruits(BD) of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.
“Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.”(BE)
27 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write(BF) down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant(BG) with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights(BH) without eating bread or drinking water.(BI) And he wrote on the tablets(BJ) the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.(BK)
The Radiant Face of Moses
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai(BL) with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands,(BM) he was not aware that his face was radiant(BN) because he had spoken with the Lord. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community(BO) came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands(BP) the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.
33 When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil(BQ) over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the Lord’s presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant.(BR) Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord.

2 Be ready and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to Me on the top of the mountain.
3 And no man shall come up with you, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mountain; neither let flocks or herds feed before that mountain.
4 So Moses cut two tables of stone like the first, and he rose up early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took [a]in his hand two tables of stone.
5 And the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there and proclaimed the name of the Lord.
6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord! the Lord! a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving-kindness and truth,
7 Keeping mercy and loving-kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but Who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and fourth generation.
8 And Moses made haste to bow his head toward the earth and worshiped.
9 And he said, If now I have found favor and loving-kindness in Your sight, O Lord, let the Lord, I pray You, go in the midst of us, although it is a stiff-necked people, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for Your inheritance.
10 And the Lord said, Behold, I lay down [afresh the terms of the mutual agreement between Israel and Me] a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels (wonders, miracles) such as have not been wrought or created in all the earth or in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord; for it is a terrible thing [fearful and full of awe] that I will do with you.
11 Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I drive out before you the Amorite, Canaanite, Hittite, Perizzite, Hivite, and Jebusite.
12 Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant or mutual agreement with the inhabitants of the land to which you go, lest it become a snare in the midst of you.
13 But you shall destroy their altars, dash in pieces their pillars (obelisks, images), and cut down their Asherim [symbols of the goddess Asherah];
14 For you shall worship no other god; for the Lord, Whose name is Jealous, is a jealous (impassioned) God,
15 Lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and when they play the harlot after their gods and sacrifice to their gods and one invites you, you eat of his food sacrificed to idols,
16 And you take of their daughters for your sons, and their daughters play the harlot after their gods and make your sons play the harlot after their gods.
17 You shall make for yourselves no molten gods.
18 The Feast of Unleavened Bread you shall keep. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, in the time of the month of Abib; for in the month of Abib you came out of Egypt.
19 All the males that first open the womb among your livestock are Mine, whether ox or sheep.
20 But the firstling of a donkey [an unclean beast] you shall redeem with a lamb or kid, and if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. And none of you shall appear before Me empty-handed.
21 Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest [on the Sabbath].
22 You shall observe the Feast of Weeks, the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year’s end.
23 Three times in the year shall all your males appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel.
24 For I will cast out the nations before you and enlarge your borders; neither shall any man desire [and molest] your land when you go up to appear before the Lord your God three times in the year.
25 You shall not offer the blood of My sacrifice with leaven; neither shall the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover be left until morning.
26 The first of the firstfruits of your ground you shall bring to the house of the Lord your God. You shall not boil a kid in his mother’s milk.
27 And the Lord said to Moses, Write these words, for after the purpose and character of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.
28 Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he ate no bread and drank no water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tables of the Testimony in his hand, he did not know that the skin of his face shone and sent forth beams by reason of his speaking with the Lord.
30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they feared to come near him.
31 But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and [he] talked with them.
32 Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all the Lord had said to him in Mount Sinai.
33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face.
34 But when Moses went in before the Lord to speak with Him, [b]he took the veil off until he came out. And he came out and told the Israelites what he was commanded.
35 The Israelites saw the face of Moses, how the skin of it shone; and Moses put the veil on his face again until he went in to speak with God.

- Exodus 34:4 The two tables of stone are believed to have been pocket-size, easily carried in one hand. The pictures of Moses carrying tombstone-size tables are the result of the misconception of artists, and are not supported by the Bible.
- Exodus 34:34 The apostle Paul expressly refers to this incident when he says that we all may, with unveiled faces, behold the glory of the Lord, and be transformed (II Cor. 3:13-18). That blessed vision, which of old was given only to the great leader of Israel, is now within reach of each individual believer. The Gospel has no fences to keep the crowd off the mount of vision; the lowliest and most unworthy of its children may pass upward where the shining glory is to be seen. “We all... are changed” (F. B. Meyer, Moses, the Servant of God).
