7 Elisha svarade: ”Hör Herrens ord. Så säger Herren: I morgon vid den här tiden ska man i Samarias port få ett sea-mått fint mjöl för en sikel och två sea-mått korn för en sikel[a].” 2 Officeren som kungen stödde sig på svarade gudsmannen: ”Även om Herren gjorde fönster på himlen, hur skulle det kunna ske?” Elisha sade: ”Du ska få se det med egna ögon, men du själv ska inte få äta av det.”
De spetälska vid Samarias stadsport
3 (A) Utanför stadsporten uppehöll sig fyra spetälska män. De sade till varandra: ”Varför stanna här tills vi dör? 4 Om vi bestämmer oss för att gå in i staden nu medan där är svält, så kommer vi att dö där. Och stannar vi här kommer vi också att dö. Så låt oss gå över till arameernas läger. Låter de oss leva så får vi leva, och dödar de oss så låt oss dö.” 5 I skymningen steg de upp och gick in i arameernas läger.
Men när de kom till utkanten av lägret, då fanns inte en människa där. 6 (B) Herren hade nämligen låtit det höras ett dån av vagnar och hästar, ett dån som av en stor här, och de hade sagt till varandra: ”Israels kung har säkert lejt hetiternas kungar[b] och egyptiernas kungar för att överfalla oss!” 7 Därför hade de brutit upp och flytt i skymningen och hade övergett sina tält, sina hästar och åsnor. Och de hade övergett lägret sådant det stod och flytt för att rädda sina liv.
8 När de spetälska kom till utkanten av lägret, gick de in i ett tält och åt och drack. Och de tog silver, guld och kläder och gick bort och gömde det. Sedan vände de tillbaka till ett annat tält och tog vad som fanns där och gick bort och gömde det. 9 Men därefter sade de till varandra: ”Vi gör inte rätt. I dag kan vi komma med goda nyheter. Men om vi tiger nu och väntar till i morgon, drar vi skuld över oss. Kom så går vi och berättar om det här i kungens hus.”
10 Så gick de bort och ropade till vakten vid stadsporten och berättade för dem: ”Vi kom till arameernas läger, men där fanns inte en människa, och det hördes inte ett ljud av någon människa. Där stod endast hästarna och åsnorna bundna och tälten stod som de brukade.” 11 De som höll vakt vid porten ropade ut det, och man berättade det också inne i kungens hus.
12 Kungen steg då upp mitt i natten och sade till sina tjänare: ”Jag ska tala om för er vad arameerna har gjort mot oss. De vet att vi är uthungrade. Därför har de gått ut ur lägret och gömt sig ute på marken och menar att de ska gripa oss levande när vi lämnar staden, och att de på så sätt ska komma in i staden.” 13 Men en av hans tjänare sade: ”Låt oss ta fem av de hästar som fortfarande finns kvar härinne och skicka i väg dem och se vad som händer. Annars går det med dem som med de israeliter som finns kvar här, eller som det har gått med hela hopen av israeliter som redan har dött.”
14 Man tog alltså två vagnar med förspända hästar, och kungen skickade i väg dem efter arameernas här och sade: ”Kör bort och se efter.” 15 De körde efter dem ända till Jordan. Då fick de se hela vägen full med kläder och andra saker som arameerna hade kastat ifrån sig när de flydde. De som skickats i väg kom tillbaka och meddelade kungen detta.
16 Då drog folket ut och plundrade arameernas läger. Och nu fick man ett sea-mått fint mjöl för en sikel och två sea-mått korn för en sikel, så som Herren hade sagt. 17 Officeren som kungen brukade stödja sig på hade han satt att hålla ordning vid stadsporten. Men folket trampade ihjäl honom i porten och han dog. Det blev så enligt det ord som gudsmannen hade sagt när kungen kom ner till honom. 18 För när gudsmannen sade till kungen: ”I morgon vid den här tiden ska man i Samarias port få två sea-mått korn för en sikel och ett sea-mått fint mjöl för en sikel”, 19 då sade officeren till gudsmannen: ”Även om Herren gjorde fönster på himlen, hur skulle något sådant kunna ske?” Då sade han: ”Du ska få se det med egna ögon, men du själv ska inte få äta av det.” 20 Så hände honom också, för han dog när folket trampade ihjäl honom i porten.

7 Elisha svarade: ”Hör Herrens ord! Så säger Herren: I morgon vid den här tiden ska man kunna köpa 8 kilo mjöl eller 16 kilo[a] korn för 1 sikel silver vid Samarias stadsport.”
2 ”Det kan inte hända ens om Herren öppnar himlens fönster!” svarade kungens adjutant som kungen stödde sig på. ”Du ska få se det, men du kommer inte att få möjlighet att äta något av det!” sa Elisha till honom.
Några spetälska män tar en risk
3 Samtidigt satt fyra spetälska män vid stadsporten och de funderade: ”Varför ska vi bara sitta här tills vi dör? 4 Om vi bestämmer oss för att gå in i staden där det är hungersnöd, kommer vi att svälta ihjäl, och om vi stannar här dör vi då också. Därför kan vi ju lika gärna gå över till araméerna. Om de låter oss leva är det så mycket bättre och om de dödar oss, har vi inget att förlora, för vi ska ju dö i alla fall.”
5 I skymningen gick de ut till fiendens läger, men när de kom dit fanns det ingen där. 6 Herren hade nämligen låtit araméerna höra dånet av vagnar och galopperande hästar, som om en stor armé närmade sig. ”Kungen i Israel har lejt hettiterna och egypterna för att anfalla oss”, ropade de. 7 De hade flytt i skymningen och lämnat sina tält, hästar, åsnor och lägret efter sig, precis som det stod, och flytt för livet.
8 När de fyra spetälska männen kom till utkanten av lägret, gick de in i ett av tälten och åt och drack. De bar också ut silver och guld och kläder som de gömde. Sedan gick de till ett annat tält, tog vad som fanns där och gick och gömde det. 9 Men till slut sa de till varandra: ”Det här är inte rätt. Här sitter vi inne med goda nyheter och låter ingen veta det! Även om vi så bara väntar till i morgon med att berätta dem, kan vi bli straffade. Det är bäst att vi går till kungens palats och talar om vad som har hänt.”
10 De återvände till stadsporten och berättade för vakterna vad som hade hänt, att de hade kommit ut till araméernas läger och att de varken sett eller hört en levande varelse där. Hästarna och åsnorna hade stått bundna, och tälten hade stått kvar där som förut. 11 Då ropade vakten genast ut nyheten som fördes till dem inne i palatset, 12 och kungen steg hastigt upp och sa till sina officerare: ”Jag förstår nog vad araméerna gjort mot oss. De vet att vi svälter, och nu har de lämnat lägret och gömmer sig någonstans i närheten för att vi ska låta oss luras ut dit. Sedan tänker de anfalla från staden, tillfångata oss och inta staden.”
13 En av hans officerare sa: ”Låt några män ta fem av de hästar vi har kvar i staden. Blir de kvar här går det med dem som med alla de israeliter som redan förgåtts. Låt oss alltså skicka några för att se efter!”
14 Man fick fram två vagnar med hästar, och kungen sände iväg dem för att undersöka vart den arameiska armén hade tagit vägen. 15 De följde efter dem ända till Jordan och fann kläder och andra tillhörigheter som araméerna kastat ifrån sig under hela flykten. Där vände de utsända tillbaka till kungen och berättade för honom vad de sett. 16 Då rusade folket ut ur staden och plundrade lägret, och det slog alltså in att 8 kilo mjöl och 16 kilo korn den dagen såldes för 1 sikel silver, precis som Herren hade sagt.
17 Kungen satte sin adjutant som han brukade stödja sig på till uppsikt över stadsporten, men han blev nertrampad och dödad av det utrusande folket. Det var detta gudsmannen hade förutsagt, när kungen kom till honom. 18 Då hade gudsmannen talat om för kungen att 8 kilo mjöl och 16 kilo korn skulle säljas för 1 sikel silver följande dag vid stadsporten i Samaria.
19 Kungens adjutant hade svarat gudsmannen: ”Det kan inte hända ens om Herren öppnar himlens fönster!”
”Du ska få se det med egna ögon, men du kommer inte att få möjlighet att äta av det!” hade profeten svarat honom.
20 Och så blev det. Han trampades till döds i stadsporten av folket.

2 Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the Lord would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
3 And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die?
4 If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.
5 And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.
6 For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.
7 Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.
8 And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and hid it.
9 Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king's household.
10 So they came and called unto the porter of the city: and they told them, saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but horses tied, and asses tied, and the tents as they were.
11 And he called the porters; and they told it to the king's house within.
12 And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city.
13 And one of his servants answered and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city, (behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it: behold, I say, they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed:) and let us send and see.
14 They took therefore two chariot horses; and the king sent after the host of the Syrians, saying, Go and see.
15 And they went after them unto Jordan: and, lo, all the way was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians had cast away in their haste. And the messengers returned, and told the king.
16 And the people went out, and spoiled the tents of the Syrians. So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, according to the word of the Lord.
17 And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he leaned to have the charge of the gate: and the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died, as the man of God had said, who spake when the king came down to him.
18 And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be to morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria:
19 And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the Lord should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.
20 And so it fell out unto him: for the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died.

9 Then they said one to another, We are not doing right. This is a day of [glad] good news and we are silent and do not speak up! If we wait until daylight, some punishment will come upon us [for not reporting at once]. So now come, let us go and tell the king’s household.
10 So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city. They told them, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and behold, there was neither sight nor sound of man there—only the horses and donkeys tied, and the tents as they were.
11 Then the gatekeepers called out, and it was told to the king’s household within.
12 And the king rose in the night and said to his servants, I will tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are hungry; therefore they have gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the open country, thinking, When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive and get into the city.
13 One of his servants said, Let some men take five of the remaining horses; [if they are caught and killed] they will be no worse off than all the multitude of Israel left in the city to be consumed. Let us send and see.
14 So they took two chariot horses, and the king sent them after the Syrian army, saying, Go and see.
15 They went after them to the Jordan. All the way was strewn with clothing and equipment which the Syrians had cast away in their flight. And the messengers returned and told the king.
16 Then the people went out and plundered the tents of the Syrians. So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, as the Lord had spoken [through Elisha].(A)
17 The king had appointed the captain on whose hand he leaned to have charge of the gate, and the [starving] people trampled him in the gate [as they struggled to get through for food], and he died, as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to him.
18 When the man of God had told the king, Two measures of barley shall sell for a shekel and a measure of fine flour for a shekel tomorrow about this time in the gate of Samaria,
19 The captain had told the man of God, If the Lord should make windows in heaven, could such a thing be? And he said, You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it.(B)
20 And so it was fulfilled to him, for the people trampled on him in the gate, and he died.

7 Elisha replied, “Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says: About this time tomorrow, a seah[a] of the finest flour will sell for a shekel[b] and two seahs[c] of barley for a shekel(A) at the gate of Samaria.”
2 The officer on whose arm the king was leaning(B) said to the man of God, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates(C) of the heavens, could this happen?”
“You will see it with your own eyes,” answered Elisha, “but you will not eat(D) any of it!”
The Siege Lifted
3 Now there were four men with leprosy[d](E) at the entrance of the city gate. They said to each other, “Why stay here until we die? 4 If we say, ‘We’ll go into the city’—the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let’s go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die.”
5 At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans. When they reached the edge of the camp, no one was there, 6 for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound(F) of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, “Look, the king of Israel has hired(G) the Hittite(H) and Egyptian kings to attack us!” 7 So they got up and fled(I) in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.
8 The men who had leprosy(J) reached the edge of the camp, entered one of the tents and ate and drank. Then they took silver, gold and clothes, and went off and hid them. They returned and entered another tent and took some things from it and hid them also.
9 Then they said to each other, “What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let’s go at once and report this to the royal palace.”
10 So they went and called out to the city gatekeepers and told them, “We went into the Aramean camp and no one was there—not a sound of anyone—only tethered horses and donkeys, and the tents left just as they were.” 11 The gatekeepers shouted the news, and it was reported within the palace.
12 The king got up in the night and said to his officers, “I will tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are starving; so they have left the camp to hide(K) in the countryside, thinking, ‘They will surely come out, and then we will take them alive and get into the city.’”
13 One of his officers answered, “Have some men take five of the horses that are left in the city. Their plight will be like that of all the Israelites left here—yes, they will only be like all these Israelites who are doomed. So let us send them to find out what happened.”
14 So they selected two chariots with their horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean army. He commanded the drivers, “Go and find out what has happened.” 15 They followed them as far as the Jordan, and they found the whole road strewn with the clothing and equipment the Arameans had thrown away in their headlong flight.(L) So the messengers returned and reported to the king. 16 Then the people went out and plundered(M) the camp of the Arameans. So a seah of the finest flour sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley sold for a shekel,(N) as the Lord had said.
17 Now the king had put the officer on whose arm he leaned in charge of the gate, and the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died,(O) just as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to his house. 18 It happened as the man of God had said to the king: “About this time tomorrow, a seah of the finest flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.”
19 The officer had said to the man of God, “Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates(P) of the heavens, could this happen?” The man of God had replied, “You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!” 20 And that is exactly what happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died.
