12 I Jehus sjunde regeringsår blev Joas konung, och han regerade fyrtio år i Jerusalem. Hans moder hette Sibja, från Beer-Seba.
2 Och Joas gjorde vad rätt var HERRENS ögon, så länge han levde, prästen Jojada hade varit hans lärare.
3 Dock blevo offerhöjderna icke avskaffade, utan folket fortfor att frambära offer och tända offereld på höjderna.
4 Och Joas sade till prästerna: »Alla penningar vilka såsom heliga gåvor inflyta till HERRENS hus, gångbara penningar, sådana som utgöra lösen för personer, efter det värde som för var och en bestämmes, och alla penningar som någon av sitt hjärta manas att bära till HERRENS hus,
5 dem skola prästerna taga emot, var och en av sina bekanta, och de skola därmed sätta i stånd vad som är förfallet på HERRENS hus, överallt där något förfallet finnes.»
6 Men i konung Joas' tjugutredje regeringsår hade prästerna ännu icke satt i stånd vad som var förfallet på huset.
7 Då kallade konung Joas till sig prästen Jojada och de övriga prästerna och sade till dem: »Varför sätten I icke i stånd vad som är förfallet på huset? Nu fån I icke längre taga emot penningar av edra bekanta, utan I skolen lämna dem ifrån eder till det som är förfallet på huset.»
8 Och prästerna samtyckte till att icke taga emot penningar av folket, och ej heller befatta sig med att sätta i stånd vad som var förfallet på huset.
9 Då tog prästen Jojada en kista och borrade ett hål på locket och ställde den bredvid altaret, på högra sidan, när man går in i HERRENS hus. Och prästerna som höllo vakt vid tröskeln lade dit alla penningar som inflöto till HERRENS hus.
10 Men så snart de då märkte att mycket penningar fanns i kistan, gick konungens sekreterare ditupp jämte översteprästen, och de knöto in och räknade sedan de penningar som funnos i HERRENS hus.
11 Därefter överlämnades de uppvägda penningarna åt de män som förrättade arbete såsom tillsyningsmän vid HERRENS hus, och dessa betalade ut dem åt de timmermän och byggningsmän som arbetade på HERRENS hus,
12 och åt murarna och stenhuggarna, så ock till inköp av trävirke och huggen sten för att sätta i stånd vad som var förfallet på HERRENS hus, korteligen, till alla utgifter för att sätta huset i stånd.
13 Men man gjorde inga silverfat för HERRENS hus, ej heller knivar, skålar, trumpeter eller andra föremål av guld eller av silver, för de penningar som inflöto till HERRENS hus,
14 utan man gav dem åt arbetarna, och dessa satte därför HERRENS hus i stånd.
15 Och man höll icke någon räkenskap med de män åt vilka penningarna överlämnades, för att de skulle giva dem åt arbetarna, utan de fingo handla på heder och tro.
16 Men skuldoffers- och syndofferspenningarna gingo icke till HERRENS hus utan tillföllo prästerna.
17 På den tiden drog Hasael, konungen i Aram, upp och belägrade Gat och intog det, därefter ställde Hasael sitt tåg upp mot Jerusalem.
18 Då tog Joas, Juda konung, allt vad hans fäder Josafat, Joram och Ahasja, Juda konungar, hade helgat åt HERREN, och vad han själv hade helgat åt HERREN, och allt guld som fanns i skattkamrarna i HERRENS hus och i konungshuset, och sände det till Hasael, konungen i Aram, och då lämnade denne Jerusalem i fred.
19 Vad nu mer är att säga om Joas och om allt vad han gjorde, det finnes upptecknat i Juda konungars krönika.
20 Och hans tjänare uppreste sig och sammansvuro sig och dräpte Joas i Millobyggnaden, som sträcker sig ned mot Silla.
21 Det var hans tjänare Josakar, Simeats son, och Josabad, Somers son, som slogo honom till döds. Och man begrov honom hos hans fäder i Davids stad. Och hans son Amasja blev konung efter honom

Joas restaureert de tempel van God
12 Zeven jaar nadat Jehu koning over Israël was geworden, werd Joas koning over Juda. Hij regeerde veertig jaar vanuit Jeruzalem. Zijn moeder heette Zibja en was afkomstig uit Berseba. 2 Joas deed wat goed was zolang de hogepriester Jojada hem met raad en daad terzijde stond. 3 Toch ruimde ook hij de offerplaatsen op de heuvels niet op. De mensen bleven daar gewoon offers en reukwerk verbranden.
4,5 Op een dag zei koning Joas tegen de priesters: ‘Het tempelgebouw moet nodig worden opgeknapt. Steeds als iemand iets voor de Here komt brengen, zowel de vaste bijdrage als een bijzondere gift, moet het worden gebruikt voor de herstelwerkzaamheden.’ 6 Maar in zijn drieëntwintigste regeringsjaar was de tempel nog steeds niet opgeknapt. 7 Joas riep Jojada en de andere priesters bij zich en vroeg: ‘Waarom hebt u niets aan de tempel gedaan? Gebruik vanaf dit moment de persoonlijke giften die u van vrienden en bekenden krijgt niet meer voor uw eigen behoeften, alles moet nu worden gebruikt om de tempel weer in goede staat te krijgen.’ 8 De priesters gingen ermee akkoord dat zij geen giften meer zouden aannemen en gaven de zeggenschap over de restauratie uit handen.
9 De priester Jojada boorde een gat in het deksel van een kist en plaatste die aan de rechterkant van het altaar bij de ingang van de tempel. De priesters die wacht hielden bij de deur, deden daar alle giften van de mensen in. 10 Elke keer als de kist vol was, deden de boekhouder van de koning en de hogepriester het geld in zakken, wogen het 11,12 en gaven het aan de bouwopzichters. Die betaalden van dat geld de timmerlui, de metselaars, de steenhouwers, de houthandelaren en de steenhandelaren en alle materialen die nodig waren voor de restauratie van de tempel van de Here. 13,14 Het werd dus niet gebruikt voor het maken van zilveren kommen, messen, schalen en trompetten of dergelijke zaken, maar alleen voor de reparatiewerkzaamheden aan het gebouw. 15 Van de bouwopzichters werd geen rekening en verantwoording gevraagd, want zij waren eerlijke en betrouwbare mannen. 16 Het geld dat werd geschonken voor schuldoffers en zondoffers, werd niet voor de tempel van de Here bestemd, dat bleef voor de priesters.
17 Ongeveer in die tijd verklaarde koning Hazaël van Syrië de oorlog aan Gath en nam de stad in. Daarna trok hij verder naar Jeruzalem om ook die stad aan te vallen. 18 Koning Joas nam echter alle heilige voorwerpen die zijn voorouders—Josafat, Joram en Ahazia, de koningen van Juda—hadden gewijd, samen met wat hijzelf aan de Here had gewijd en al het goud uit de schatkamers van de tempel en het paleis en stuurde dat naar Hazaël. Die zag toen van verdere belegering af.
19 De rest van de geschiedenis van koning Joas staat beschreven in de Kronieken van de koningen van Juda. 20 Zijn officieren smeedden echter een samenzwering tegen hem. Hij werd vermoord in zijn koninklijke residentie bij Millo, aan de weg naar Silla. 21 De moordenaars waren Jozabad, de zoon van Simeath, en Jozabad, de zoon van Somer. Beiden waren dienaren van de koning. Hij werd begraven op de koninklijke begraafplaats in Jeruzalem. Zijn zoon Amazia volgde hem op als koning.

Joash Repairs the Temple(A)
12 [a]In the seventh year of Jehu, Joash[b](B) became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from Beersheba. 2 Joash did what was right(C) in the eyes of the Lord all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him. 3 The high places,(D) however, were not removed; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.
4 Joash said to the priests, “Collect(E) all the money that is brought as sacred offerings(F) to the temple of the Lord—the money collected in the census,(G) the money received from personal vows and the money brought voluntarily(H) to the temple. 5 Let every priest receive the money from one of the treasurers, then use it to repair(I) whatever damage is found in the temple.”
6 But by the twenty-third year of King Joash the priests still had not repaired the temple. 7 Therefore King Joash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests and asked them, “Why aren’t you repairing the damage done to the temple? Take no more money from your treasurers, but hand it over for repairing the temple.” 8 The priests agreed that they would not collect any more money from the people and that they would not repair the temple themselves.
9 Jehoiada the priest took a chest and bored a hole in its lid. He placed it beside the altar, on the right side as one enters the temple of the Lord. The priests who guarded the entrance(J) put into the chest all the money(K) that was brought to the temple of the Lord. 10 Whenever they saw that there was a large amount of money in the chest, the royal secretary(L) and the high priest came, counted the money that had been brought into the temple of the Lord and put it into bags. 11 When the amount had been determined, they gave the money to the men appointed to supervise the work on the temple. With it they paid those who worked on the temple of the Lord—the carpenters and builders, 12 the masons and stonecutters.(M) They purchased timber and blocks of dressed stone for the repair of the temple of the Lord, and met all the other expenses of restoring the temple.
13 The money brought into the temple was not spent for making silver basins, wick trimmers, sprinkling bowls, trumpets or any other articles of gold(N) or silver for the temple of the Lord; 14 it was paid to the workers, who used it to repair the temple. 15 They did not require an accounting from those to whom they gave the money to pay the workers, because they acted with complete honesty.(O) 16 The money from the guilt offerings(P) and sin offerings[c](Q) was not brought into the temple of the Lord; it belonged(R) to the priests.
17 About this time Hazael(S) king of Aram went up and attacked Gath and captured it. Then he turned to attack Jerusalem. 18 But Joash king of Judah took all the sacred objects dedicated by his predecessors—Jehoshaphat, Jehoram and Ahaziah, the kings of Judah—and the gifts he himself had dedicated and all the gold found in the treasuries of the temple of the Lord and of the royal palace, and he sent(T) them to Hazael king of Aram, who then withdrew(U) from Jerusalem.
19 As for the other events of the reign of Joash, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 20 His officials(V) conspired against him and assassinated(W) him at Beth Millo,(X) on the road down to Silla. 21 The officials who murdered him were Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer. He died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. And Amaziah his son succeeded him as king.

2 And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.
3 But the high places were not taken away: the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.
4 And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the house of the Lord, even the money of every one that passeth the account, the money that every man is set at, and all the money that cometh into any man's heart to bring into the house of the Lord,
5 Let the priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance: and let them repair the breaches of the house, wheresoever any breach shall be found.
6 But it was so, that in the three and twentieth year of king Jehoash the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house.
7 Then king Jehoash called for Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said unto them, Why repair ye not the breaches of the house? now therefore receive no more money of your acquaintance, but deliver it for the breaches of the house.
8 And the priests consented to receive no more money of the people, neither to repair the breaches of the house.
9 But Jehoiada the priest took a chest, and bored a hole in the lid of it, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one cometh into the house of the Lord: and the priests that kept the door put therein all the money that was brought into the house of the Lord.
10 And it was so, when they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king's scribe and the high priest came up, and they put up in bags, and told the money that was found in the house of the Lord.
11 And they gave the money, being told, into the hands of them that did the work, that had the oversight of the house of the Lord: and they laid it out to the carpenters and builders, that wrought upon the house of the Lord,
12 And to masons, and hewers of stone, and to buy timber and hewed stone to repair the breaches of the house of the Lord, and for all that was laid out for the house to repair it.
13 Howbeit there were not made for the house of the Lord bowls of silver, snuffers, basons, trumpets, any vessels of gold, or vessels of silver, of the money that was brought into the house of the Lord:
14 But they gave that to the workmen, and repaired therewith the house of the Lord.
15 Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen: for they dealt faithfully.
16 The trespass money and sin money was not brought into the house of the Lord: it was the priests'.
17 Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it: and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.
18 And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, and Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the Lord, and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.
19 And the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
20 And his servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and slew Joash in the house of Millo, which goeth down to Silla.
21 For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
