Jehu dödar hela Ahabs släkt
10 Jehu skrev brev till de styrande i staden Samaria och till förmyndarna för Ahabs sjuttio söner, som allesammans bodde där.
2-3 När ni mottagit detta brev, ska ni välja den lämpligaste av Ahabs söner till er kung och sedan bereda er på att kämpa för hans tron, för ni har ju hästar och vagnar, en befäst stad och vapen.
4 Men de var alldeles förskräckta och sa till varandra: När inte ens två kungar kan klara av honom, hur ska då vi kunna göra det?
5 Den man som förestod palatset, stadens borgmästare, de styrande och förmyndarna för Ahabs söner skickade därför detta svar till Jehu:Vi är dina tjänare och vill underordna oss dig. Vi vill inte ha någon annan kung. Gör vad du tycker är bäst.
6 Jehu svarade dem i ett brev: Om ni är på min sida och tänker lyda mig, ska ni vid den här tiden i morgon komma med er herres söners huvuden hit till mig i Jisreel.Kung Ahabs sjuttio söner bodde i de ledande männens hem, där de hade växt upp.
7 När brevet kom blev alla sjuttio dödade. Deras huvuden stoppades i korgar och sändes till Jehu i Jisreel.
8 När ett sändebud meddelade Jehu att kungasönernas huvuden hade kommit, gav han befallning om att de skulle läggas i två högar vid stadsporten och ligga kvar där till följande morgon.
9-10 På morgonen gick han ut och talade till folket som var samlat där. Ni är utan skuld till det här, sa han. Jag konspirerade mot min herre och dödade honom, men jag dödade inte hans söner! Herren har gjort detta för att allt vad han säger ska bevisas vara sant. Han förklarade genom sin tjänare Elia att detta skulle hända Ahabs efterkommande.
11 Sedan dödade Jehu också de övriga medlemmarna av Ahabs familj som fanns i Jisreel, alla av betydelse som varit i hans tjänst, nära vänner och personliga rådgivare. Ingen av dem som på något sätt haft närmare kontakt med Ahab kom undan.
12 Sedan reste Jehu mot Samaria, och på vägen övernattade han i Bet-Eked.
13 Där träffade han släktingar till kung Ahasja i Juda.Vilka är ni? frågade han dem.Vi är släkt med kung Ahasja. Vi är på väg till Samaria för att hälsa på kung Ahabs söner och kungamodern Isebel, svarade de.
14 Grip dem! befallde Jehu sina män. Sedan ledde han ut dem till brunnen och dödade dem alla. Det var sammanlagt fyrtiotvå män.
15 När han skulle lämna platsen träffade han Rekabs son Jonadab som var på väg för att möta honom. Efter att de hade hälsat på varandra, frågade Jehu honom: Är du med mig som jag är med dig? Ja, det är jag, svarade Jonadab.Räck mig då din hand, sa Jehu och hjälpte honom upp i den kungliga vagnen.
16 Följ med mig och se vad jag gör för Herren, sa Jehu.Jonadab for med honom i vagnen,
17 och när de kom fram till Samaria dödade Jehu alla Ahabs vänner och släktingar, precis som Herren hade förutsagt genom profeten Elia.
Jehu dödar alla baalspräster
18-19 Sedan sammankallade Jehu folket i staden och talade till dem. Ahab tillbad Baal, men inte alls så som jag tänker göra, sa han. Hämta hit alla Baals präster och profeter och alla som tillber honom. Se till att alla kommer, för vi ska ha en stor offerfest till Baals ära. Den som inte kommer ska dö!Men Jehu hade för avsikt att utrota alla Baals präster.
20-21 Han skickade budbärare genom hela Israel för att kalla alla som tillbad Baal till festen, och de kom allesammans och fyllde hela Baalstemplet från den ena ändan till den andra.
22 Och han gav order till den som förestod klädkammaren: Se till att alla Baals präster får prästmantlar.
23 Sedan gick Jehu och Jonadab, Rekabs son, in i Baalstemplet. Se till att det bara finns sådana som tillber Baal här inne och inte någon som tillber Herren! sa de till dem.
24 När Baals präster började offra, omringade Jehu byggnaden med åttio av sina män. Den av er som låter någon komma undan får betala med sitt eget liv! sa han till dem.
25 Så snart man hade avslutat brännoffret gick Jehu fram till sina män och gav ordern: Gå in och döda alla. Låt inte en enda slippa undan.Då dödade de allesammans och släpade ut kropparna ur templet. Sedan gick Jehu och hans män in i det innersta av templet,
26 tog ut den staty som man tillbad och brände upp den.
27 De rev ner templet och gjorde om platsen till avträde.
28 På detta sätt utplånade Jehu varje spår av Baal i Israel.
29 Men han förstörde inte guldkalvarna i Betel och Dan som Jerobeam, Nebats son, låtit bygga och som fått hela Israel att synda.
30 Senare sa Herren till Jehu: Eftersom du har följt mina föreskrifter och utplånade Ahab och hans släkt ska jag låta din son, din sonson och din sonsons son få bli kungar i Israel.
31 Men Jehu följde inte Herren, Israels Gud, av hela sitt hjärta, för han fortsatte att tillbe Jerobeams guldkalvar, som hade förorsakat så mycket synd i Israel.
32-33 Vid den tiden lät Herren Israel bli allt mindre till ytan. Kung Hasael i Aram intog flera områden öster om floden Jordan i Gilead, Gads, Rubens och Manasses områden, från floden Aroer i Arnon-dalen genom Gilead och till Basan.
34 Allt annat som Jehu gjorde finns nedtecknat i Israels kungars krönika.
35 När Jehu dött blev han begraven i Samaria, och hans son Joahas blev hans efterträdare.
36 Allt som allt regerade Jehu i tjugoåtta år över Israel i Samaria.

10 Men Ahab hade sjuttio söner i Samaria. Och Jehu skrev brev och sände till Samaria, till de överste i Jisreel, de äldste, och till de fostrare som Ahab hade utsett;
2 han skrev: »Nu, när detta brev kommer eder till handa, I som haven eder herres söner hos eder, och som haven vagnarna och hästarna hos eder, och därtill en befäst stad och vapen,
3 mån I utse den som är bäst och lämpligast av eder herres söner och sätta honom på hans faders tron och strida för eder herres hus.»
4 Men de blevo övermåttan förskräckta och sade: »De två konungarna hava ju icke kunnat hålla stånd mot honom; huru skulle då vi kunna hålla stånd!»
5 Och överhovmästaren och hövdingen över staden och de äldste och konungasönernas fostrare sände till Jehu och läto säga: »Vi äro dina tjänare; allt vad du säger oss villa vi göra. Vi vilja icke göra någon till konung; gör vad dig täckes.»
6 Då skrev han ett annat brev till dem, vari det stod: »Om I hållen med mig och viljen lyssna till mina ord, så tagen huvudena av eder herres söner och kommen i morgon vid denna tid till mig i Jisreel.» De sjuttio konungasönerna bodde nämligen hos de store i staden, vilka fostrade dem.
7 Då nu brevet kom dem till handa, togo de konungasönerna och slaktade dem, alla sjuttio, och lade deras huvuden i korgar och sände dem till honom i Jisreel.
8 När då ett bud kom och berättade för honom att de hade fört dit konungasönernas huvuden, sade han: »Läggen dem till i morgon i två högar vid ingången till porten.»
9 Och om morgonen gick han ut och ställde sig där och sade till allt folket: »I ären utan skuld. Det är jag som har anstiftat sammansvärjningen mot min herre och dräpt honom; men vem har slagit ihjäl alla dessa?
10 Märken nu huru intet av HERRENS ord faller till jorden, intet som HERREN har talat mot Ahabs hus. Ja, HERREN har gjort vad han har sagt genom sin tjänare Elia.»
11 Sedan, dräpte Jehu alla som voro kvar av Ahabs hus i Jisreel, så ock alla hans store och hans förtrogne och hans präster; han lät ingen slippa undan.
12 Därefter stod han upp och begav sig åstad till Samaria; men under vägen, när Jehu kom till Bet-Eked-Haroim,
13 träffade han på Ahasjas, Juda konungs, bröder. Han frågade dem: »Vilka ären I?» De svarade: »Vi äro Ahasjas bröder, och vi äro på väg ned för att hälsa på konungasönerna och konungamoderns söner.»
14 Han sade: »Gripen dem levande.» Då grepo de dem levande och slaktade dem och kastade dem i Bet-Ekeds brunn, alla fyrtiotvå; han lät ingen av dem bliva kvar.
15 När han sedan begav sig därifrån, träffade han Jonadab, Rekabs son, som kom honom till mötes; och han hälsade på honom och sade till honom: »Är du lika redligt sinnad mot mig som jag är mot dig?» Jonadab svarade: »Ja.» »Är det så», sade han, »så räck mig din hand.» Då räckte han honom sin hand; och han lät honom stiga upp till sig i vagnen.
16 Och han sade: »Far med mig och se huru jag nitälskar för HERREN.» Så körde man åstad med honom i hans vagn.
17 Och när han kom till Samaria, dräpte han alla som voro kvar av Ahabs hus i Samaria och förgjorde det så, i enlighet med det ord som HERREN hade talat till Elia.
18 Och Jehu församlade allt folket och sade till dem: »Ahab har tjänat Baal litet; Jehu skall tjäna honom mycket.
19 Så kallen nu hit till mig alla Baals profeter, alla hans tjänare och alla hans präster -- ingen får saknas -- ty jag har ett stort offer åt Baal i sinnet; var och en som saknas skall mista livet.» Men Jehu gjorde så med led list, i avsikt att utrota Baals tjänare.
20 Därefter sade Jehu: »Pålysen en helig högtidsförsamling åt Baal.» Då lyste man ut en sådan.
21 Och Jehu sände bud över hela Israel, och alla Baals tjänare kommo; Ingen underlät att komma. Och de gingo in i Baals tempel, och Baals tempel blev fullt, ifrån den ena ändan till den andra.
22 Sedan sade han till föreståndaren för klädkammaren: »Tag fram kläder åt alla Baals tjänare.» Och han tog fram kläderna åt dem.
23 Därefter gick Jehu in i Baals tempel med Jonadab, Rekabs son. Och han sade till Baals tjänare: »Sen nu noga efter, att här bland eder icke finnes någon HERRENS tjänare, utan allenast sådana som tjäna Baal.
24 De gingo alltså in för att offra slaktoffer och brännoffer. Men Jehu hade därutanför ställt åttio man och sagt: »Om någon slipper undan av de män som jag nu överlämnar i edra händer, så skall liv givas för liv.»
25 Och när man hade offrat brännoffret, sade Jehu till drabanterna och kämparna: »Gån in och slån ned dem; låten ingen komma ut.» Och de slogo dem med svärdsegg, och drabanterna och kämparna kastade undan deras kroppar. Därefter gingo de in i det inre av Baals tempel
26 och kastade ut stoderna ur Baals tempel och brände upp dem.
27 Och själva Baalsstoden bröto de ned; de bröto ock ned Baals tempel och gjorde därav avträden, som finnas kvar ännu i dag.
28 Så utrotade Jehu Baal ur Israel.
29 Men från de Jerobeams, Nebats sons, synder genom vilka denne hade kommit Israel att synda, från dem avstod icke Jehu, icke från guldkalvarna i Betel och Dan.
30 Och HERREN sade till Jehu: »Därför att du har väl utfört vad rätt var i mina ögon, och gjort mot Ahabs hus allt vad jag hade i sinnet, därför skola dina söner till fjärde led sitta på Israels tron.
31 Men Jehu tog dock icke i akt att vandra efter HERRENS, Israels Guds, lag av allt sitt hjärta; han avstod icke från de Jerobeams synder genom vilka denne hade kommit Israel att synda.
32 Vid denna tid begynte HERREN skära bort stycken från Israel, ty Hasael slog israeliterna utefter hela deras gräns
33 och intog östra sidan om Jordan hela landet Gilead, gaditernas, rubeniternas och manassiternas land, området från Aroer vid bäcken Arnon, både Gilead och Basan.
34 Vad nu mer är att säga om Jehu, om allt vad han gjorde och om alla hans bedrifter, det finnes upptecknat i Israels konungars krönika.
35 Och Jehu gick till vila hos sina fäder, och man begrov honom i Samaria. Och hans son Joahas blev konung efter honom.
36 Den tid Jehu regerade över Israel Samaria var tjuguåtta år.

Ahab’s Seventy Sons Killed
10 Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote and sent letters to Samaria, to the rulers of [a]Jezreel, to the elders, and to [b]those who reared Ahab’s sons, saying:
2 Now as soon as this letter comes to you, since your master’s sons are with you, and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city also, and weapons, 3 choose the [c]best qualified of your master’s sons, set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.
4 But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, “Look, (A)two kings could not [d]stand up to him; how then can we stand?” 5 And he who was in charge of the house, and he who was in charge of the city, the elders also, and those who reared the sons, sent to Jehu, saying, “We are your servants, we will do all you tell us; but we will not make anyone king. Do what is good in your sight.” 6 Then he wrote a second letter to them, saying:
If you are for me and will obey my voice, take the heads of the men, your master’s sons, and come to me at Jezreel by this time tomorrow.
Now the king’s sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were rearing them. 7 So it was, when the letter came to them, that they took the king’s sons and (B)slaughtered seventy persons, put their heads in baskets and sent them to him at Jezreel.
8 Then a messenger came and told him, saying, “They have brought the heads of the king’s sons.”
And he said, “Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.”
9 So it was, in the morning, that he went out and stood, and said to all the people, “You are righteous. Indeed (C)I conspired against my master and killed him; but who killed all these? 10 Know now that nothing shall (D)fall to the earth of the word of the Lord which the Lord spoke concerning the house of Ahab; for the Lord has done what He spoke (E)by His servant Elijah.” 11 So Jehu killed all who remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men and his close acquaintances and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
Ahaziah’s Forty-two Brothers Killed
12 And he arose and departed and went to Samaria. On the way, at [e]Beth Eked of the Shepherds, 13 (F)Jehu met with the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, “Who are you?”
So they answered, “We are the brothers of Ahaziah; we have come down to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen mother.”
14 And he said, “Take them alive!” So they took them alive, and (G)killed them at the well of [f]Beth Eked, forty-two men; and he left none of them.
The Rest of Ahab’s Family Killed
15 Now when he departed from there, he [g]met (H)Jehonadab the son of (I)Rechab, coming to meet him; and he greeted him and said to him, “Is your heart right, as my heart is toward your heart?”
And Jehonadab answered, “It is.”
Jehu said, “If it is, (J)give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand, and he took him up to him into the chariot. 16 Then he said, “Come with me, and see my (K)zeal for the Lord.” So they had him ride in his chariot. 17 And when he came to Samaria, (L)he killed all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed them, according to the word of the Lord (M)which He spoke to Elijah.
Worshipers of Baal Killed
18 Then Jehu gathered all the people together, and said to them, (N)“Ahab served Baal a little, Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now therefore, call to me all the (O)prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. Let no one be missing, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is missing shall not live.” But Jehu acted deceptively, with the intent of destroying the worshipers of Baal. 20 And Jehu said, [h]“Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal.” So they proclaimed it. 21 Then Jehu sent throughout all Israel; and all the worshipers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left who did not come. So they came into the [i]temple of Baal, and the (P)temple of Baal was full from one end to the other. 22 And he said to the one in charge of the wardrobe, “Bring out vestments for all the worshipers of Baal.” So he brought out vestments for them. 23 Then Jehu and Jehonadab the son of Rechab went into the temple of Baal, and said to the worshipers of Baal, “Search and see that no servants of the Lord are here with you, but only the worshipers of Baal.” 24 So they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had appointed for himself eighty men on the outside, and had said, “If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escapes, whoever lets him escape, it shall be (Q)his life for the life of the other.”
25 Now it happened, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, “Go in and kill them; let no one come out!” And they killed them with the edge of the sword; then the guards and the officers threw them out, and went into the [j]inner room of the temple of Baal. 26 And they brought the (R)sacred pillars out of the temple of Baal and burned them. 27 Then they broke down the sacred pillar of Baal, and tore down the [k]temple of Baal and (S)made it a refuse dump to this day. 28 Thus Jehu destroyed Baal from Israel.
29 However Jehu did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin, that is, from (T)the golden calves that were at Bethel and Dan. 30 And the Lord (U)said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in doing what is right in My sight, and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, (V)your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.” 31 But Jehu [l]took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart; for he did not depart from (W)the sins of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin.
Death of Jehu
32 In those days the Lord began to cut off parts of Israel; and (X)Hazael conquered them in all the territory of Israel 33 from the Jordan eastward: all the land of Gilead—Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh—from (Y)Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, including (Z)Gilead and Bashan.
34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 35 So Jehu [m]rested with his fathers, and they buried him in Samaria. Then (AA)Jehoahaz his son reigned in his place. 36 And the period that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.

Ahab’s Family Killed
10 Now there were in Samaria(A) seventy sons(B) of the house of Ahab. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria: to the officials of Jezreel,[a](C) to the elders and to the guardians(D) of Ahab’s children. He said, 2 “You have your master’s sons with you and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city and weapons. Now as soon as this letter reaches you, 3 choose the best and most worthy of your master’s sons and set him on his father’s throne. Then fight for your master’s house.”
4 But they were terrified and said, “If two kings could not resist him, how can we?”
5 So the palace administrator, the city governor, the elders and the guardians sent this message to Jehu: “We are your servants(E) and we will do anything you say. We will not appoint anyone as king; you do whatever you think best.”
6 Then Jehu wrote them a second letter, saying, “If you are on my side and will obey me, take the heads of your master’s sons and come to me in Jezreel by this time tomorrow.”
Now the royal princes, seventy of them, were with the leading men of the city, who were rearing them. 7 When the letter arrived, these men took the princes and slaughtered all seventy(F) of them. They put their heads(G) in baskets and sent them to Jehu in Jezreel. 8 When the messenger arrived, he told Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the princes.”
Then Jehu ordered, “Put them in two piles at the entrance of the city gate until morning.”
9 The next morning Jehu went out. He stood before all the people and said, “You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him, but who killed all these? 10 Know, then, that not a word the Lord has spoken against the house of Ahab will fail. The Lord has done what he announced(H) through his servant Elijah.”(I) 11 So Jehu(J) killed everyone in Jezreel who remained of the house of Ahab, as well as all his chief men, his close friends and his priests, leaving him no survivor.(K)
12 Jehu then set out and went toward Samaria. At Beth Eked of the Shepherds, 13 he met some relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, “Who are you?”
They said, “We are relatives of Ahaziah,(L) and we have come down to greet the families of the king and of the queen mother.(M)”
14 “Take them alive!” he ordered. So they took them alive and slaughtered them by the well of Beth Eked—forty-two of them. He left no survivor.(N)
15 After he left there, he came upon Jehonadab(O) son of Rekab,(P) who was on his way to meet him. Jehu greeted him and said, “Are you in accord with me, as I am with you?”
“I am,” Jehonadab answered.
“If so,” said Jehu, “give me your hand.”(Q) So he did, and Jehu helped him up into the chariot. 16 Jehu said, “Come with me and see my zeal(R) for the Lord.” Then he had him ride along in his chariot.
17 When Jehu came to Samaria, he killed all who were left there of Ahab’s family;(S) he destroyed them, according to the word of the Lord spoken to Elijah.
Servants of Baal Killed
18 Then Jehu brought all the people together and said to them, “Ahab served(T) Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much. 19 Now summon(U) all the prophets of Baal, all his servants and all his priests. See that no one is missing, because I am going to hold a great sacrifice for Baal. Anyone who fails to come will no longer live.” But Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal.
20 Jehu said, “Call an assembly(V) in honor of Baal.” So they proclaimed it. 21 Then he sent word throughout Israel, and all the servants of Baal came; not one stayed away. They crowded into the temple of Baal until it was full from one end to the other. 22 And Jehu said to the keeper of the wardrobe, “Bring robes for all the servants of Baal.” So he brought out robes for them.
23 Then Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rekab went into the temple of Baal. Jehu said to the servants of Baal, “Look around and see that no one who serves the Lord is here with you—only servants of Baal.” 24 So they went in to make sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had posted eighty men outside with this warning: “If one of you lets any of the men I am placing in your hands escape, it will be your life for his life.”(W)
25 As soon as Jehu had finished making the burnt offering, he ordered the guards and officers: “Go in and kill(X) them; let no one escape.”(Y) So they cut them down with the sword. The guards and officers threw the bodies out and then entered the inner shrine of the temple of Baal. 26 They brought the sacred stone(Z) out of the temple of Baal and burned it. 27 They demolished the sacred stone of Baal and tore down the temple(AA) of Baal, and people have used it for a latrine to this day.
28 So Jehu(AB) destroyed Baal worship in Israel. 29 However, he did not turn away from the sins(AC) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden calves(AD) at Bethel(AE) and Dan.
30 The Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”(AF) 31 Yet Jehu was not careful(AG) to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins(AH) of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.
32 In those days the Lord began to reduce(AI) the size of Israel. Hazael(AJ) overpowered the Israelites throughout their territory 33 east of the Jordan in all the land of Gilead (the region of Gad, Reuben and Manasseh), from Aroer(AK) by the Arnon(AL) Gorge through Gilead to Bashan.
34 As for the other events of Jehu’s reign, all he did, and all his achievements, are they not written in the book of the annals(AM) of the kings of Israel?
35 Jehu rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son succeeded him as king. 36 The time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.
