Ahabs söner dödas
10 Ahab hade sjuttio söner i Samaria. Jehu skrev brev som han sände till Samaria, till ledarna i Jisreel, de äldste och till dem som skulle uppfostra Ahabs söner. Han skrev: 2 ”Nu när ni får detta brev, ni som har er herres söner hos er och som har vagnarna och hästarna hos er och dessutom en befäst stad och vapen, 3 utse då den som är bäst och lämpligast av er herres söner och sätt honom på hans fars tron och strid för er herres hus.”
4 (A) Men de blev mycket förskräckta och sade: ”De två kungarna har ju inte kunnat stå emot honom. Hur skulle då vi kunna göra det?” 5 Överförvaltaren och högste styresmannen i staden, de äldste och de som fostrade kungens söner sände bud till Jehu och lät säga: ”Vi är dina tjänare. Allt som du säger till oss vill vi göra. Vi vill inte göra någon till kung. Gör vad du finner för gott.”
6 Då skrev han ännu ett brev till dem och där stod: ”Om ni står på min sida och vill lyssna till mina ord, så halshugg er herres söner[a] och kom i morgon vid denna tid till mig i Jisreel.” De sjuttio kungasönerna bodde hos de ledande i staden och uppfostrades av dem. 7 (B) När de fick brevet, tog de kungasönerna och dräpte dem, alla sjuttio, och lade deras huvuden i korgar och sände dem till Jehu i Jisreel. 8 När ett bud kom och berättade för honom att man hade fört dit kungasönernas huvuden, sade han: ”Lägg dem till i morgon i två högar vid ingången till porten.”
9 På morgonen gick han ut och ställde sig där och sade till allt folket: ”Ni är utan skuld. Det är jag som har ordnat sammansvärjningen mot min herre och dödat honom. Men vem har slagit ihjäl alla dessa? 10 (C) Ni ska veta att inget av Herrens ord faller till marken, inget som Herren har talat mot Ahabs hus. Herren har gjort det han har sagt genom sin tjänare Elia.” 11 Sedan dödade Jehu alla som fanns kvar av Ahabs hus i Jisreel, även alla hans förnämsta män, hans förtrogna och hans präster. Han lät ingen komma undan.
Ahasjas bröder dödas
12 Därefter steg Jehu upp och gav sig i väg till Samaria. Men när han under vägen kom till Bet-Eked-Haroim, 13 (D) träffade han på Juda kung Ahasjas bröder. Han frågade dem: ”Vilka är ni?” De svarade: ”Vi är Ahasjas bröder, och vi är på väg ner för att hälsa på kungasönerna och kungamoderns söner.” 14 Han sade: ”Grip dem levande!” Då grep de dem levande och dräpte dem vid Bet-Ekeds brunn, alla fyrtiotvå. Han lät ingen av dem bli kvar.
Alla ättlingar till Ahab dödas
15 (E) När han sedan begav sig därifrån träffade han Jonadab, Rekabs son[b], som kom för att möta honom. Han hälsade på honom och sade till honom: ”Är du lika uppriktig mot mig som jag är mot dig?” Jonadab svarade: ”Ja.” ”Är det så”, sade han, ”räck mig då handen!” Han räckte honom handen och lät honom stiga upp till sig i vagnen och han sade: 16 ”Följ med mig och se min stora iver för Herren.” Så körde man i väg med honom i hans vagn. 17 När han kom till Samaria dödade han alla som var kvar av Ahabs hus i Samaria tills han hade utrotat dem, enligt det ord som Herren hade talat till Elia.
Baals tjänare dödas
18 (F) Jehu samlade hela folket och sade till dem: ”Ahab har tjänat Baal lite, Jehu ska tjäna honom mycket. 19 Kalla hit till mig alla Baals profeter, alla hans tjänare och alla hans präster. Ingen får saknas, för jag planerar ett stort offer åt Baal. Var och en som saknas ska mista livet.” Men Jehu gjorde så med list eftersom han ville utrota Baals tjänare. 20 Därefter sade Jehu: ”Utlys en helig högtidsförsamling åt Baal.” Då utlyste man en sådan. 21 Jehu sände bud över hela Israel och alla Baals tjänare kom, ingen uteblev. De gick in i Baals tempel, som blev fullt från ena änden till den andra. 22 Sedan sade han till föreståndaren för klädkammaren: ”Ta fram kläder åt alla Baals tjänare.” Och han tog fram kläder åt dem.
23 Därefter gick Jehu in i Baals tempel med Jonadab, Rekabs son. Han sade till Baals tjänare: ”Se nu noga efter att det inte finns någon Herrens tjänare här bland er, utan bara sådana som tjänar Baal.” 24 De gick in dit för att offra slaktoffer och brännoffer. Men Jehu hade ställt åttio man utanför och sagt: ”Om någon av de män som jag nu överlämnar i era händer slipper undan, ska liv ges för liv.”
25 (G) När man hade offrat brännoffret sade Jehu till livvakterna och officerarna: ”Gå in och hugg ner dem. Låt ingen komma ut.” Och de slog dem med svärd, och livvakterna och officerarna kastade undan deras kroppar. Sedan gick de in i det inre av Baals tempel 26 (H) och kastade ut stoderna och brände dem. 27 Själva baalsstoden bröt de ner. De bröt också ner Baals tempel och gjorde det till ett avträde som finns kvar än i dag.
28 Så utrotade Jehu Baal ur Israel. 29 (I) Men han vände sig inte bort från de synder som Jerobeam, Nebats son, hade förlett Israel med, inte från guldkalvarna i Betel och Dan.
30 (J) Herren sade till Jehu: ”Eftersom du så väl har utfört det som var rätt i mina ögon och gjort allt som jag hade i sinnet mot Ahabs hus, ska dina söner sitta på Israels tron till fjärde led.” 31 Men Jehu brydde sig inte om att av hela sitt hjärta följa Herrens, Israels Guds, lag. Han vände sig inte bort från de synder som Jerobeam hade förlett Israel med.
Jehu dör
32 (K) Vid denna tid började Herren stycka Israel, för Hasael slog israeliterna[c] utefter hela deras gräns. 33 På östra sidan om Jordan intog han hela landet Gilead, gaditernas, rubeniternas och manassiternas land, området från Aroer vid Arnons dalgång, både Gilead och Basan.
34 Vad som mer finns att säga om Jehu, om allt han gjorde och om alla hans bedrifter, det är skrivet i Israels kungars krönika. 35 (L) Jehu gick till vila hos sina fäder och man begravde honom i Samaria. Hans son Joahas blev kung efter honom. 36 Den tid Jehu regerade över Israel i Samaria var tjugoåtta år[d].

Jehu dödar hela Achavs släkt
10 Achav hade sjuttio söner i Samaria. Jehu skickade brev till Samaria, till de styrande i Jisreel, till de äldste och till förmyndarna för Achavs söner. Han skrev:
2 ”När ni mottagit detta brev, ni som har er herres söner hos er samt hästar och vagnar, en befäst stad och vapen, 3 ska ni välja den lämpligaste av Achavs söner till er kung och sedan bereda er på att kämpa för er herres ätt.”
4 Men de blev alldeles förskräckta och sa till varandra: ”När inte ens två kungar kan klara av honom, hur ska då vi kunna göra det?”
5 Den man som förestod palatset, stadens borgmästare, de äldste och förmyndarna för Achavs söner skickade därför detta svar till Jehu: ”Vi är dina tjänare och vill underordna oss dig. Vi vill inte ha någon annan kung. Gör vad du tycker är bäst!”
6 Jehu svarade dem i ett brev: ”Om ni är på min sida och tänker lyda mig, ska ni vid den här tiden i morgon komma med er herres söners huvuden hit till mig i Jisreel!”
Kung Achavs sjuttio söner bodde i de ledande männens hem, som hade ansvaret för deras uppfostran. 7 När brevet kom, halshöggs alla sjuttio. Deras huvuden stoppades i korgar och sändes till Jehu i Jisreel. 8 När ett sändebud meddelade Jehu att kungasönernas huvuden hade kommit, gav han befallning om att de skulle läggas i två högar vid stadsporten och ligga kvar där till följande morgon.
9 På morgonen gick han ut, ställde sig där och talade till folket som var samlat där: ”Ni är utan skuld till det här. Jag konspirerade mot min herre och dödade honom, men vem har dödat alla dessa? 10 Ni ska veta att varje ord besannas som Herren har talat om Achavs släkt. Han har utfört vad han förutsagt genom sin tjänare Elia.”
11 Sedan dödade Jehu också de övriga medlemmarna av Achavs familj som fanns kvar i Jisreel, alla av betydelse som varit i hans tjänst, nära vänner och präster. Ingen av dem kom undan.
12 Sedan reste Jehu mot Samaria, och på vägen, i Bet-Eked Haroim, 13 mötte han släktingar till kung Achasja i Juda.
”Vilka är ni?” frågade han dem. ”Vi är släkt med kung Achasja. Vi har kommit för att hälsa på kung Achavs söner och kungamodern”, svarade de.
14 ”Grip dem levande!” befallde Jehu sina män. Då grep de dem levande. Sedan ledde han ut dem till brunnen i Bet-Eked och dödade dem alla. Det var sammanlagt fyrtiotvå män. Han lät ingen av dem komma undan.
15 När han begav sig därifrån, träffade han Rekavs son Jonadav som var på väg för att möta honom. Efter att de hade hälsat på varandra, frågade Jehu honom: ”Är du med mig som jag är med dig?” ”Ja, det är jag”, svarade Jonadav. ”Räck mig då din hand”, sa Jehu och hjälpte honom upp i vagnen. 16 ”Följ med mig och se hur nitiskt jag kämpar för Herren”, sa Jehu.
Jonadav for med honom i vagnen, 17 och när han kom fram till Samaria dödade Jehu alla Achavs släktingar som fanns kvar där och utrotade hans ätt, precis som Herren hade förutsagt genom Elia.
Jehu dödar alla baalspräster
18 Sedan sammankallade Jehu folket och talade till dem. ”Achav tillbad Baal lite, men Jehu tänker tillbe honom mycket”, sa han. 19 ”Kalla hit alla Baals präster och profeter och alla som tillber honom! Ingen får utebli, för jag ska ha en stor offerfest till Baals ära. Den som inte kommer ska dö!”
Men Jehu agerade med list för att utrota alla baalsdyrkare. 20 Han befallde: ”Lys ut en helig högtidssamling till Baals ära!” Då utlyste man en sådan. 21 Jehu skickade bud över hela Israel, och alla baalsdyrkarna kom; inte en enda uteblev. De gick in i Baals tempel, som fylldes från den ena ändan till den andra. 22 Och han gav order till den som förestod klädkammaren: ”Ta fram kläder åt alla Baals tjänare.” Då bar han fram kläder åt dem.
23 Sedan gick Jehu och Jonadav, Rekavs son, in i baalstemplet. ”Se till att det bara finns sådana som tillber Baal här inne och inte någon som tillber Herren!” sa han till baalsdyrkarna.
24 När de gick in för att offra slaktoffren och brännoffren, hade Jehu ställt åttio av sina män utanför och sagt: ”Den av er som låter någon av dessa som jag nu överlämnar åt er komma undan, får betala med sitt eget liv.”
25 Så snart man hade avslutat brännoffret, gav Jehu en order till livvakterna och officerarna: ”Gå in och hugg ner dem alla! Låt inte en enda slippa undan!” Då högg de ner dem allesammans med svärd och kastade ut kropparna. Sedan gick de in i det innersta av baalstemplet, 26 tog ut stoden ur baalstemplet och brände upp den. 27 De rev ner baalsstoden och baalstemplet och gjorde om platsen till avträde, vilket den är än idag. 28 På detta sätt utplånade Jehu Baal i Israel. 29 Men han vände sig inte från Jerobeams, Nevats sons, synd som han förlett Israel till att begå, nämligen guldkalvarna i Betel och Dan.
30 Senare sa Herren till Jehu: ”Eftersom du gjort det som var rätt i mina ögon, följt min vilja och gjort med Achav och hans släkt som jag hade tänkt, ska jag låta dina ättlingar, intill fjärde generationen, sitta på Israels tron.”
31 Men Jehu brydde sig inte om att följa Herrens, Israels Guds, lag av hela sitt hjärta, för han vände sig inte från Jerobeams synd som han hade förlett Israel till att begå.
32 Vid den tiden lät Herren Israel bli allt mindre till ytan. Hasael besegrade israeliterna och intog deras områden 33 öster om floden Jordan i Gilead, Gads, Rubens och Manasses områden, från floden Aroer i Arnon-dalen genom Gilead och till Bashan.
34 Allt annat som Jehu gjorde och uträttade finns nedtecknat i Israels kungars krönika.
35 När Jehu dött blev han begraven i Samaria, och hans son Joachas blev hans efterträdare. 36 Allt som allt regerade Jehu i tjugoåtta år över Israel i Samaria.

10 And Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And Jehu wrote letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up Ahab's children, saying,
2 Now as soon as this letter cometh to you, seeing your master's sons are with you, and there are with you chariots and horses, a fenced city also, and armour;
3 Look even out the best and meetest of your master's sons, and set him on his father's throne, and fight for your master's house.
4 But they were exceedingly afraid, and said, Behold, two kings stood not before him: how then shall we stand?
5 And he that was over the house, and he that was over the city, the elders also, and the bringers up of the children, sent to Jehu, saying, We are thy servants, and will do all that thou shalt bid us; we will not make any king: do thou that which is good in thine eyes.
6 Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master's sons, and come to me to Jezreel by to morrow this time. Now the king's sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up.
7 And it came to pass, when the letter came to them, that they took the king's sons, and slew seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent him them to Jezreel.
8 And there came a messenger, and told him, saying, They have brought the heads of the king's sons. And he said, Lay ye them in two heaps at the entering in of the gate until the morning.
9 And it came to pass in the morning, that he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, Ye be righteous: behold, I conspired against my master, and slew him: but who slew all these?
10 Know now that there shall fall unto the earth nothing of the word of the Lord, which the Lord spake concerning the house of Ahab: for the Lord hath done that which he spake by his servant Elijah.
11 So Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
12 And he arose and departed, and came to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing house in the way,
13 Jehu met with the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of Ahaziah; and we go down to salute the children of the king and the children of the queen.
14 And he said, Take them alive. And they took them alive, and slew them at the pit of the shearing house, even two and forty men; neither left he any of them.
15 And when he was departed thence, he lighted on Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him: and he saluted him, and said to him, Is thine heart right, as my heart is with thy heart? And Jehonadab answered, It is. If it be, give me thine hand. And he gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot.
16 And he said, Come with me, and see my zeal for the Lord. So they made him ride in his chariot.
17 And when he came to Samaria, he slew all that remained unto Ahab in Samaria, till he had destroyed him, according to the saying of the Lord, which he spake to Elijah.
18 And Jehu gathered all the people together, and said unto them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu shall serve him much.
19 Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests; let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to Baal; whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But Jehu did it in subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal.
20 And Jehu said, Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it.
21 And Jehu sent through all Israel: and all the worshippers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left that came not. And they came into the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was full from one end to another.
22 And he said unto him that was over the vestry, Bring forth vestments for all the worshippers of Baal. And he brought them forth vestments.
23 And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said unto the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the Lord, but the worshippers of Baal only.
24 And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu appointed fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escape, he that letteth him go, his life shall be for the life of him.
25 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and slay them; let none come forth. And they smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal.
26 And they brought forth the images out of the house of Baal, and burned them.
27 And they brake down the image of Baal, and brake down the house of Baal, and made it a draught house unto this day.
28 Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.
29 Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Bethel, and that were in Dan.
30 And the Lord said unto Jehu, Because thou hast done well in executing that which is right in mine eyes, and hast done unto the house of Ahab according to all that was in mine heart, thy children of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel.
31 But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin.
32 In those days the Lord began to cut Israel short: and Hazael smote them in all the coasts of Israel;
33 From Jordan eastward, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, and the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan.
34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
35 And Jehu slept with his fathers: and they buried him in Samaria. And Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead.
36 And the time that Jehu reigned over Israel in Samaria was twenty and eight years.

10 Ahab had seventy [grandsons] in Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them from Jezreel to the rulers of Samaria, to the elders, and to those who brought up Ahab’s [grandsons], saying,
2 Now as soon as this letter comes to you, seeing your master [Joram’s] sons are with you and also chariots and horses, a fortified city, and weapons,
3 Select the best and most fit of your master’s sons and set him on his father’s throne; and fight for your master’s house.
4 But they were exceedingly afraid and reasoned, The two kings could not stand before [Jehu]; how then can we stand?
5 And he who was over the household, he who was over the city, the elders also, and the guardians and tutors sent to Jehu, saying, We are your servants and will do all that you bid us; [but] we will not make any man king; do what is good in your eyes.
6 Then [Jehu] wrote a second letter to them, saying, If you are with me and will obey me, take the heads of your master [Joram’s] sons and come to me at Jezreel by tomorrow this time. Now the [dead] king’s sons, seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, who were bringing them up.
7 When the letter came to these men, they took the king’s sons and slew them, seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu at Jezreel.
8 When a messenger came and told him, They have brought the heads of the king’s sons, he said, Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the city gate until morning.
9 The next morning he went out and stood and said to all the people, You are just and innocent. Behold, I conspired against my master and slew him, but who smote all these?
10 Know now that nothing which the Lord spoke concerning the house of Ahab shall be unfulfilled or ineffective; for the Lord has done what He said through His servant Elijah.
11 So Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, his familiar friends, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.
12 And he arose and went to Samaria. And as he was at the shearing house of the shepherds on the way,
13 Jehu met the kinsmen of Ahaziah king of Judah and said, Who are you? They answered, We are the kinsmen of Ahaziah, and we came down to visit the royal princes and the sons of [Jezebel] the queen mother.
14 He said, Take them alive. And they did so and slew them at the cistern of the shearing house, forty-two men; he left none of them.
15 When Jehu left there, he met Jehonadab son of Rechab coming to meet him. He saluted him and said to him, Is your heart right, as my heart is with yours? Jehonadab answered, It is. [Jehu said] If it is, give me your hand. He gave him his hand, and Jehu took him up into the chariot.
16 And he said, Come with me and see my zeal for the Lord. So they made [the Rechabite] ride in Jehu’s chariot.
17 When Jehu came to Samaria, he slew all who remained of Ahab’s family in Samaria, till he had destroyed them all, according to what the Lord said to Elijah.
18 Jehu assembled all the people and said to them, Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu will serve him much.
19 So call to me all the prophets of Baal, all his worshipers, and all his priests. Let none be missing, for I have a great sacrifice to make to Baal; whoever is missing shall not live. But Jehu did it with trickery, intending to destroy the Baal worshipers.
20 Jehu said, Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal. And they proclaimed it.
21 Jehu sent through all Israel, and all the worshipers of Baal came; not a man failed to come. They went to the house or temple of Baal, filling it from one end to the other.
22 And he said to the man over the vestry, Bring vestments for all the worshipers of Baal. And he brought them vestments.
23 Then Jehu with Jehonadab son of Rechab went into the house of Baal and said to the worshipers of Baal, Search and see that there are here with you none of the servants of the Lord—but Baal worshipers only.
24 And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings, Jehu appointed eighty men outside and said, If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escape, he who lets him go shall forfeit his own life for his life.
25 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guards and to the officers, Go in and slay them; let none escape. And they smote them with the sword; and the guards or runners [before the king] and the officers threw their bodies out and went into the inner dwelling of the house of Baal.
26 They brought out the pillars or obelisks of the house of Baal and burned them.
27 They broke down the pillars of Baal and the house of Baal, and made it [forever unclean] a privy to this day.
28 Thus Jehu rooted Baal out of Israel.
29 But Jehu did not give up the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, by which he made Israel to sin, that is, the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.(A)
30 And the Lord said to Jehu, Because you have executed well what is right in My eyes and have done to the house of Ahab as I willed, your sons to the fourth generation shall sit on Israel’s throne. [Fulfilled in II Kings 15:12.]
31 But Jehu paid no attention to walking in the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not quit the sins with which Jeroboam made Israel to sin.
32 [So] in those days the Lord began to cut off parts of Israel. Hazael [of Syria] defeated them in all the [across the Jordan] territory of Israel
33 From the Jordan east, all the land of Gilead, the Gadites, Reubenites, and Manassites, from Aroer which is by the Valley of the Arnon, even Gilead and Bashan.
34 The rest of the acts of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
35 Jehu slept with his fathers. They buried him in Samaria. Jehoahaz his son reigned in his stead.
