31 När allt detta var över, drog alla israeliter som hade varit där ut till Juda städer och slog sönder stoderna, högg ner aserorna och bröt ner offerhöjderna och altarna i hela Juda, Benjamin, Efraim och Manasse, till dess att de hade gjort slut på dem. Sedan vände alla Israels barn tillbaka till sina städer, var och en till sin besittning.

2 Hiskia gav befallning om prästernas och leviternas avdelningar, allteftersom de tillhörde den ena eller den andra avdelningen, så att både präster och leviter fick sina bestämda uppgifter, antingen det gällde att bära fram brännoffer eller gemenskapsoffer eller att förrätta gudstjänst och tacka och lovsjunga i portarna till Herrens boning. 3 Kungen gav en del av det han ägde till brännoffren, nämligen till brännoffer morgon och kväll och till brännoffer på sabbaterna, vid nymånaderna och högtiderna, så som det var skrivet i Herrens lag. 4 Och han befallde folket som bodde i Jerusalem att ge prästerna och leviterna deras del, för att de skulle kunna hålla fast vid Herrens undervisning.

5 När denna befallning blev känd, gav Israels barn en riklig förstlingsgåva av säd, vin, olja och honung och av all gröda på marken. De förde fram tionde av allt i riklig mängd. 6 Och de av Israel och Juda som bodde i Juda städer förde också fram tionde av nötboskap och småboskap, liksom tionde av de heliga gåvor som helgades åt Herren, deras Gud, och lade dem i högar. 7 I tredje månaden började de att lägga upp högarna, och i sjunde månaden var de färdiga med det. 8 När Hiskia och hans furstar kom för att se högarna, välsignade de Herren och hans folk Israel. 9 Och Hiskia frågade prästerna och leviterna angående högarna. 10 Då svarade översteprästen Asarja, av Sadoks hus, och sade: "Sedan man började föra fram offergåvan till Herrens hus, har vi ätit och blivit mätta och ändå fått mycket över, för Herren har välsignat sitt folk. 11 Hiskia befallde då att man skulle inreda förrådsrum i Herrens hus, och man inredde sådana. 12 I dem förde man noggrant in offergåvan och tiondet och de heliga gåvorna. Leviten Konanja hade huvudansvaret för arbetet, och hans närmaste man var hans bror Simei. 13 Jehiel, Asasja, Nahat, Asael, Jerimot, Josabad, Eliel, Jismakja, Mahat och Benaja var tillsyningsmän under Konanja och hans bror Simei enligt beslut av kung Hiskia och Asarja, fursten i Guds hus. 14 Leviten Kore, Jimnas son, som var dörrvaktare på östra sidan, hade uppsikten över de frivilliga gåvorna åt Gud och skulle fördela Herrens offergåvor och det högheliga av offren. 15 Vid hans sida i präststäderna fanns Eden, Minjamin, Jesua, Semaja, Amarja och Sekanja, och de ombesörjde noggrant utdelningen till sina bröder efter deras avdelningar, lika för gammal som ung.

Av leviterna var de upptagna som var tjugo år eller äldre enligt deras särskilda åligganden och avdelningar. 18 I släktregistret skulle de vara upptecknade med alla sina små barn, hustrur, söner och döttrar, så många de var, ty de skulle noggrant förvalta det heliga som heligt. 19 För dem av Arons söner, prästerna, som bodde på utmarkerna till sina städer, fanns i var särskild stad namngivna män tillsatta som skulle dela ut till alla av mankön bland prästerna och till alla de leviter som var upptecknade i släktregistret vad de hade rätt till.

20 Detta genomförde Hiskia i hela Juda, och han gjorde inför Herren, sin Gud, vad som var gott, rätt och sant. 21 Allt han företog sig när han sökte sin Gud, vare sig det gällde tjänstgöringen i Guds hus eller lagen och budorden, gjorde han av hela sitt hjärta, och han var framgångsrik.

New English Translation

31 When all this was over, the Israelites[a] who were in the cities of Judah went out and smashed the sacred pillars, cut down the Asherah poles, and demolished[b] all the high places and altars throughout Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh.[c] Then all the Israelites returned to their own homes in their cities.[d]

The People Contribute to the Temple

2 Hezekiah appointed the divisions of the priests and Levites to do their assigned tasks[e]—to offer burnt sacrifices and present offerings and to serve, give thanks, and offer praise in the gates of the Lord’s sanctuary.[f]

3 The king contributed[g] some of what he owned for burnt sacrifices, including the morning and evening burnt sacrifices and the burnt sacrifices made on Sabbaths, new moon festivals, and at other appointed times prescribed[h] in the law of the Lord. 4 He ordered[i] the people living in Jerusalem to contribute the portion prescribed for the priests and Levites so they might be obedient[j] to the law of the Lord. 5 When the edict was issued,[k] the Israelites freely contributed[l] the initial portion of their grain, wine, olive oil, honey, and all the produce of their fields. They brought a tenth of everything, which added up to a huge amount. 6 The Israelites and people of Judah[m] who lived in the cities of Judah also contributed a tenth of their cattle and sheep, as well as a tenth of the holy items consecrated to the Lord their God. They brought them and placed them in many heaps.[n] 7 In the third month they began piling their contributions in heaps[o] and finished in the seventh month. 8 When Hezekiah and the officials came and saw the heaps, they praised the Lord and pronounced blessings on his people Israel.[p]

9 When Hezekiah asked the priests and Levites about the heaps, 10 Azariah, the head priest from the family of Zadok, said to him, “Since the contributions began arriving in the Lord’s temple, we have had plenty to eat and have a large quantity left over. For the Lord has blessed his people, and this large amount remains.” 11 Hezekiah ordered that storerooms be prepared in the Lord’s temple. When this was done,[q] 12 they brought in the contributions, tithes,[r] and consecrated items that had been offered.[s] Konaniah, a Levite, was in charge of all this, assisted by his brother Shimei. 13 Jehiel, Azaziah, Nahath, Asahel, Jerimoth, Jozabad, Eliel, Ismakiah, Mahath, and Benaiah worked under the supervision of Konaniah and his brother Shimei, as directed by King Hezekiah and Azariah, the supervisor of God’s temple.

14 Kore son of Imnah, a Levite and the guard on the east side, was in charge of the voluntary offerings made to God and disbursed the contributions made to the Lord and the consecrated items. 15 In the cities of the priests, Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua, Shemaiah, Amariah, and Shecaniah faithfully assisted him in making disbursements to their fellow priests[t] according to their divisions, regardless of age.[u] 16 They made disbursements to all the males three years old and up who were listed in the genealogical records—to all who would enter the Lord’s temple to serve on a daily basis and fulfill their duties as assigned to their divisions.[v] 17 They made disbursements to the priests listed in the genealogical records by their families, and to the Levites twenty years old and up, according to their duties as assigned to their divisions, 18 and to all the infants, wives, sons, and daughters of the entire assembly listed in the genealogical records, for they faithfully consecrated themselves. 19 As for the descendants of Aaron, the priests who lived in the outskirts of all their cities,[w] men were assigned[x] to disburse portions to every male among the priests and to every Levite listed in the genealogical records.

20 This is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah. He did what the Lord his God considered good and right and faithful. 21 He wholeheartedly and successfully reinstituted service in God’s temple and obedience to the law, in order to follow his God.[y]
