Ahas kung i Juda

28 Ahas var tjugo år när han blev kung, och han regerade sexton år i Jerusalem. Han gjorde inte det som var rätt i Herrens ögon så som hans fader David, 2 utan vandrade på samma väg som Israels kungar. Han gjorde också gjutna avgudabilder åt baalerna. 3 Själv tände han offereld i Hinnoms sons dal och brände upp sina barn i eld efter den avskyvärda seden hos de folk som Herren hade fördrivit för Israels barn. 4 Och han bar fram offer och tände offereld på höjderna och kullarna och under alla gröna träd.

Krig mot Aram och Israel

5 Därför gav Herren, hans Gud, honom i den arameiske kungens hand. De besegrade honom och tog många av hans folk till fånga och förde dem till Damaskus. Ahas blev överlämnad i den israeliske kungens hand, och denne tillfogade honom ett stort nederlag. 6 Ty Peka, Remaljas son, dödade 120 000 man av Juda på en enda dag, alla stridsdugliga män. Detta skedde därför att de hade övergivit Herren, sina fäders Gud. 7 Och Sikri, en tapper man från Efraim, dödade kungasonen Maaseja, slottsfursten Asrikam och Elkana, kungens närmaste man. 8 Och Israels barn tog bland sina bröder 200 000 fångar, nämligen deras hustrur, söner och döttrar. Dessutom tog de ett stort byte från dem, och bytet förde de till Samaria.

Profeten Oded

9 Men där fanns en Herrens profet som hette Oded. Han gick ut mot hären när den kom till Samaria och sade till dem: "Se, i sin vrede över Juda har Herren, era fäders Gud, givit dem i er hand, men ni har dödat dem med ett raseri som har nått upp till himlen. 10 Och nu tänker ni underkuva Juda och Jerusalems folk för att göra dem till slavar och slavinnor åt er. Har ni då inte hos er nog med skuld mot Herren, er Gud? 11 Hör därför på mig: Sänd tillbaka fångarna som ni har tagit från era bröder, ty Herrens vrede är över er."

12 Några av huvudmännen bland Efraims barn, nämligen Asarja, Johanans son, Berekja, Mesillemots son, Hiskia, Sallums son, och Amasa, Hadlajs son, stod då upp och gick emot dem som kom från kriget 13 och sade till dem: "Ni skall inte föra dessa fångar hit in, ty ni drar skuld över oss inför Herren, och ni förökar ytterligare våra synder och vår skuld. Vår skuld är ju redan stor nog, och brinnande vrede är över Israel." 14 Då lämnade krigsfolket ifrån sig fångarna och bytet inför furstarna och hela församlingen. 15 Männen som nämnts vid namn stod upp och tog sig an fångarna. Alla som var utan kläder ibland dem klädde de upp med vad de hade tagit som byte. De gav dem kläder och skor, mat och dryck, och smorde dem med olja, och alla som inte orkade gå lät de sätta sig upp på åsnor och förde dem så till Jeriko, Palmstaden, till deras bröder där. Sedan vände de tillbaka till Samaria.

16 Vid samma tid sände kung Ahas bud till kungarna i Assyrien med begäran om hjälp. 17 Ty förutom allt annat hade edomiterna återigen kommit och slagit Juda och tagit fångar. 18 Och filisteerna hade fallit in i städerna i Juda lågland och Negev och hade tagit Bet-Semes, Ajalon, Gederot, Soko med underlydande orter, Timna med underlydande orter och Gimso med underlydande orter och bosatt sig i dem. 19 Ty Herren ville förödmjuka Juda för Ahas, den israelitiske kungens, skull, därför att han var orsak till lössläppthet i Juda och var trolös mot Herren. 20 Men Tiglat-Pileser, kungen i Assyrien drog emot honom och ansatte honom i stället för att ge honom stöd. 21 Ty trots att Ahas plundrade Herrens hus, kungshuset och furstarna och gav det åt kungen i Assyrien, hjälpte det honom inte.

Ahas försyndelser

22 I sin nöd syndade denne kung Ahas ännu mer genom trolöshet mot Herren. 23 Han offrade nämligen åt gudarna i Damaskus, de som hade besegrat honom, ty han tänkte: "Eftersom de arameiska kungarnas gudar har hjälpt dem, vill jag offra åt dem, så att de hjälper mig." Men det var i stället dessa som kom honom och hela Israel på fall. 24 Och Ahas samlade ihop de kärl som fanns i Guds hus och bröt sönder kärlen i Guds hus, stängde igen dörrarna till Herrens hus och gjorde sig altaren i varje gathörn i Jerusalem. 25 I var och en av Juda städer uppförde han offerhöjder för att tända offereld åt andra gudar. På detta sätt väckte han Herrens, sina fäders Guds, vrede.

26 Vad som mer finns att säga om honom och om allt som han företog sig, om hans första tid såväl som om hans sista, det är skrivet i boken om Juda och Israels kungar. 27 Ahas gick till vila hos sina fäder, och man begravde honom i Jerusalem, inne i staden, ty de lade honom inte i Israels kungars gravar. Hans son Hiskia blev kung efter honom.

Ahaz King of Judah(A)

28 Ahaz(B) was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem sixteen years. Unlike David his father, he did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord. 2 He followed the ways of the kings of Israel and also made idols(C) for worshiping the Baals. 3 He burned sacrifices in the Valley of Ben Hinnom(D) and sacrificed his children(E) in the fire, engaging in the detestable(F) practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before the Israelites. 4 He offered sacrifices and burned incense at the high places, on the hilltops and under every spreading tree.

5 Therefore the Lord his God delivered him into the hands of the king of Aram.(G) The Arameans defeated him and took many of his people as prisoners and brought them to Damascus.

He was also given into the hands of the king of Israel, who inflicted heavy casualties on him. 6 In one day Pekah(H) son of Remaliah killed a hundred and twenty thousand soldiers in Judah(I)—because Judah had forsaken the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 7 Zikri, an Ephraimite warrior, killed Maaseiah the king’s son, Azrikam the officer in charge of the palace, and Elkanah, second to the king. 8 The men of Israel took captive from their fellow Israelites who were from Judah(J) two hundred thousand wives, sons and daughters. They also took a great deal of plunder, which they carried back to Samaria.(K)

9 But a prophet of the Lord named Oded was there, and he went out to meet the army when it returned to Samaria. He said to them, “Because the Lord, the God of your ancestors, was angry(L) with Judah, he gave them into your hand. But you have slaughtered them in a rage that reaches to heaven.(M) 10 And now you intend to make the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem your slaves.(N) But aren’t you also guilty of sins against the Lord your God? 11 Now listen to me! Send back your fellow Israelites you have taken as prisoners, for the Lord’s fierce anger rests on you.(O)”

12 Then some of the leaders in Ephraim—Azariah son of Jehohanan, Berekiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai—confronted those who were arriving from the war. 13 “You must not bring those prisoners here,” they said, “or we will be guilty before the Lord. Do you intend to add to our sin and guilt? For our guilt is already great, and his fierce anger rests on Israel.”

14 So the soldiers gave up the prisoners and plunder in the presence of the officials and all the assembly. 15 The men designated by name took the prisoners, and from the plunder they clothed all who were naked. They provided them with clothes and sandals, food and drink,(P) and healing balm. All those who were weak they put on donkeys. So they took them back to their fellow Israelites at Jericho, the City of Palms,(Q) and returned to Samaria.(R)

16 At that time King Ahaz sent to the kings[a] of Assyria(S) for help. 17 The Edomites(T) had again come and attacked Judah and carried away prisoners,(U) 18 while the Philistines(V) had raided towns in the foothills and in the Negev of Judah. They captured and occupied Beth Shemesh, Aijalon(W) and Gederoth,(X) as well as Soko,(Y) Timnah(Z) and Gimzo, with their surrounding villages. 19 The Lord had humbled Judah because of Ahaz king of Israel,[b] for he had promoted wickedness in Judah and had been most unfaithful(AA) to the Lord. 20 Tiglath-Pileser[c](AB) king of Assyria(AC) came to him, but he gave him trouble(AD) instead of help.(AE) 21 Ahaz(AF) took some of the things from the temple of the Lord and from the royal palace and from the officials and presented them to the king of Assyria, but that did not help him.(AG)

22 In his time of trouble King Ahaz became even more unfaithful(AH) to the Lord. 23 He offered sacrifices to the gods(AI) of Damascus, who had defeated him; for he thought, “Since the gods of the kings of Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them so they will help me.”(AJ) But they were his downfall and the downfall of all Israel.(AK)

24 Ahaz gathered together the furnishings(AL) from the temple of God(AM) and cut them in pieces. He shut the doors(AN) of the Lord’s temple and set up altars(AO) at every street corner in Jerusalem. 25 In every town in Judah he built high places to burn sacrifices to other gods and aroused the anger of the Lord, the God of his ancestors.

26 The other events of his reign and all his ways, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 Ahaz rested(AP) with his ancestors and was buried(AQ) in the city of Jerusalem, but he was not placed in the tombs of the kings of Israel. And Hezekiah his son succeeded him as king.

Ahaz Reigns in Judah(A)

28 Ahaz (B)was twenty years old when he became king, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem; and he did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord, as his father David had done. 2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made (C)molded images for (D)the Baals. 3 He burned incense in (E)the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, and burned (F)his children in the (G)fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord had (H)cast out before the children of Israel. 4 And he sacrificed and burned incense on the [a]high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.

Syria and Israel Defeat Judah(I)

5 Therefore (J)the Lord his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria. They (K)defeated him, and carried away a great multitude of them as captives, and brought them to Damascus. Then he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who defeated him with a great slaughter. 6 For (L)Pekah the son of Remaliah killed one hundred and twenty thousand in Judah in one day, all valiant men, (M)because they had forsaken the Lord God of their fathers. 7 Zichri, a mighty man of Ephraim, killed Maaseiah the king’s son, Azrikam the officer over the house, and Elkanah who was second to the king. 8 And the children of Israel carried away captive of their (N)brethren two hundred thousand women, sons, and daughters; and they also took away much [b]spoil from them, and brought the spoil to Samaria.

Israel Returns the Captives

9 But a (O)prophet of the Lord was there, whose name was Oded; and he went out before the army that came to Samaria, and said to them: “Look, (P)because the Lord God of your fathers was angry with Judah, He has delivered them into your hand; but you have killed them in a rage that (Q)reaches up to heaven. 10 And now you propose to force the children of Judah and Jerusalem to be your (R)male and female slaves; but are you not also guilty before the Lord your God? 11 Now hear me, therefore, and return the captives, whom you have taken captive from your brethren, (S)for the fierce wrath of the Lord is upon you.”

12 Then some of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the son of Johanan, Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the son of Hadlai, stood up against those who came from the war, 13 and said to them, “You shall not bring the captives here, for we already have offended the Lord. You intend to add to our sins and to our guilt; for our guilt is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.” 14 So the armed men left the captives and the [c]spoil before the leaders and all the assembly. 15 Then the men (T)who were designated by name rose up and took the captives, and from the [d]spoil they clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them and gave them sandals, (U)gave them food and drink, and anointed them; and they let all the feeble ones ride on donkeys. So they brought them to their brethren at Jericho, (V)the city of palm trees. Then they returned to Samaria.

Assyria Refuses to Help Judah(W)

16 (X)At the same time King Ahaz sent to the [e]kings of Assyria to help him. 17 For again the (Y)Edomites had come, attacked Judah, and carried away captives. 18 (Z)The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the lowland and of the South of Judah, and had taken Beth Shemesh, Aijalon, Gederoth, Sochoh with its villages, Timnah with its villages, and Gimzo with its villages; and they dwelt there. 19 For the Lord [f]brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of (AA)Israel, for he had (AB)encouraged moral decline in Judah and had been continually unfaithful to the Lord. 20 Also (AC)Tiglath-Pileser[g] king of Assyria came to him and distressed him, and did not assist him. 21 For Ahaz took part of the treasures from the house of the Lord, from the house of the king, and from the leaders, and he gave it to the king of Assyria; but he did not help him.

Apostasy and Death of Ahaz(AD)

22 Now in the time of his distress King Ahaz became increasingly unfaithful to the Lord. This is that King Ahaz. 23 For (AE)he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus which had defeated him, saying, “Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, I will sacrifice to them (AF)that they may help me.” But they were the ruin of him and of all Israel. 24 So Ahaz gathered the articles of the house of God, cut in pieces the articles of the house of God, (AG)shut up the doors of the house of the Lord, and made for himself altars in every corner of Jerusalem. 25 And in every single city of Judah he made [h]high places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked to anger the Lord God of his fathers.

26 (AH)Now the rest of his acts and all his ways, from first to last, indeed they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 27 So Ahaz [i]rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, in Jerusalem; but they (AI)did not bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. Then Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.
