34  Nyolcz esztendõs vala Jósiás, mikor uralkodni kezdett volt, és uralkodott harminczegy esztendeig Jeruzsálemben.

2 És jó dolgot cselekedék az Úr elõtt, és jára az õ atyjának Dávidnak útjain, és nem hajolt el sem jobbra, sem balra;

3 Mert az õ királyságának nyolczadik esztendejében, mikor még gyermek volna, kezdé keresni az õ atyjának Dávidnak Istenét; tizenkettedik esztendejében pedig Júdát és Jeruzsálemet kezdé megtisztítani a magaslatoktól, Aseráktól, bálványoktól és öntött képektõl.

4 Leronták õ elõtte a Baálok oltárait és az azokon levõ szobrokat lehányatá; az Aserákot is a bálványokkal és öntött képekkel egyetembe szétrombolá és apróra töreté, és elhinteté azoknak temetõhelyén, a kik azoknak áldoztak vala.

5 A papok csontjait megégeté azoknak oltárain, és megtisztítá Júdát és Jeruzsálemet.

6 [Így cselekedék] Manassénak, Efraimnak és Simeonnak városaiban is, mind Nafthaliig, azoknak pusztáiban köröskörül.

7 Lehányatá azért az oltárokat; az Aserákat és a bálványokat összetördelé mind porrá, és minden naposzlopot elpusztított Izráel egész földén; azután megtére Jeruzsálembe.

8 Királyságának tizennyolczadik esztendejében pedig, minekutána a földet és a házat megtisztítá, elküldé Sáfánt az Asália fiát, és Maaséját a város elõljáróját, és Joát a Joákház fiát, az emlékírót, hogy kijavíttatnák az Úrnak, az õ Istenének házát.

9 És menének Hilkiás fõpaphoz, és átadták [néki] az Isten házába begyült pénzt, a melyet a Léviták, az ajtónállók gyûjtöttek Manassétól, Efraimtól és az egész Izráel maradékaitól, és egész Júdától és Benjámintól, és Jeruzsálem lakóitól.

10 És adák a munkavezetõknek, a kik felvigyáztak az Úr házában, hogy adják azt a munkásoknak, a kik dolgoztak az Úr házában, hogy kijavítsák és helyreállítsák a házat.

11 És adának [pénzt] az ácsoknak és a kõmûveseknek, hogy vegyenek faragott köveket, és fákat a kapcsolásokra, és a házak gerendázására, a melyeket elrontottak a Júda királyai.

12 És az emberek hûségesen végzik vala a munkát; a kikre felügyelének Jáhát és Obádia Léviták, a Mérári fiai közül valók; és Zakariás, Mésullám, a Kéhátiták fiai közül valók, a kik szorgalmazzák vala õket. E Léviták pedig mindnyájan mesterek valának az éneklõszerszámokban.

13 A teherhordókat pedig (mert voltak felügyelõk a munkások felett mindenféle dologban) szorgalmazák a Léviták közül való íródeákok, igazgatók és ajtónállók.

14 Mikor pedig kihozák azok a pénzt, a mely az Úr házában gyûlt össze: megtalálá Hilkia pap az Úr törvénykönyvét, a melyet Mózes által [adott] volt.

15 Szóla pedig Hilkia, és monda Sáfánnak, az íródeáknak: A törvénykönyvet megtalálám az Úr házában. És adá Hilkia a könyvet Sáfánnak.

16 És vivé Sáfán a könyvet a királyhoz, és elbeszélé néki a dolgot, mondván: Valamit bíztál a te szolgáidra, abban híven eljárnak;

17 Mert az Úr házában talált pénzt összeszedvén, adák a felügyelõknek és munkásoknak kezébe.

18 Továbbá jelenté Sáfán íródeák a királynak, mondván: Hilkia pap nékem egy könyvet ada; és olvasott abból Sáfán a király elõtt.

19 Mikor pedig a király hallotta a törvény beszédit, ruháit megszaggatá.

20 És parancsola a király Hilkia papnak és Ahikámnak a Sáfán fiának, Abdonnak a Mika fiának, és az íródeáknak Sáfánnak, és Asájának a király szolgájának, mondván:

21 Menjetek el, és keressétek meg az Urat én érettem, s az Izráel és Júda maradékaiért, a könyv beszédei felõl, a mely megtaláltatott, mert nagy az Úr haragja, a mely mi reánk szállott azért, hogy a mi atyáink nem tartották meg az Úrnak beszédét, hogy mind a szerint cselekedtek volna, a mint e könyvben megíratott.

22 Elméne azért Hilkia és a király embere Húlda prófétaasszonyhoz, a Sallum feleségéhez, a ki Thókéhát fia vala, a ki Hasrának, a ruhák gondviselõjének fia vala (õ pedig Jeruzsálemben, a második utczában lakik vala) és a szerint szólának néki.

23 Ki monda nékik: Így szól az Úr, Izráel Istene: Mondjátok meg a férfinak, a ki titeket hozzám küldött;

24 Ezt mondja az Úr: Ímé én veszedelmet hozok e helyre és ennek lakosira, mindazokat az átkokat, a melyek meg vannak írva a könyvben, a melyet felolvastak a Júda királya elõtt;

25 Mivel elhagytak engem, és idegen isteneknek tömjéneztek, hogy engem haragra gerjeszszenek az õ kezeiknek minden cselekedetei által. Felgerjedt az én haragom e hely ellen, és el sem oltatik.

26 A Júda királyának pedig, a ki titeket küldött, hogy az Urat megkérdjétek, így szóljatok: Így szól az Úr, Izráel Istene: A mi a beszédeket illeti, a melyeket hallottál:

27 Mivel a te szíved meglágyult, és magadat megaláztad az Isten elõtt, mikor hallád az õ beszédeit e hely ellen és az õ lakosai ellen; mivel magadat megaláztad elõttem, és ruháidat megszaggattad és sírtál elõttem: én is meghallgattalak, ezt mondja az Úr.

28 Ímé én téged a te atyáid közé takarítlak, és tétetel a te sírodba békességben, és nem látják a te szemeid azt a veszedelmet, a melyet én hozok e helyre és ennek lakóira. És e szerint beszélték el ezt a királynak.

29 Akkor a király elkülde, és összegyûjteté Júdának és Jeruzsálemnek minden véneit.

30 És felméne a király az Úr házába, és õ vele Júdának minden férfiai, és Jeruzsálem lakosai, a papok, a Léviták és az egész nép kicsinytõl fogva nagyig, és elolvasá fülök hallására a szövetség könyvének minden beszédeit, a melyet találtak vala az Úr házában.

31 Azután felállván a király az õ helyén, fogadást tõn az Úr elõtt, hogy õ az Urat követendi, és hogy parancsolatait, bizonyságtételeit és rendeléseit teljes szívébõl és teljes lelkébõl megõrzendi, cselekedvén a szövetség beszédeit, a melyek megirattak abban a könyvben.

32 És felfogadtatá e dolgot mindazokkal, a kik Jeruzsálembõl és Benjáminból valók. És Jeruzsálem lakói az Istennek, az õ atyáik Istenének szövetsége szerint cselekedének.

33 Akkor elpusztított Jósiás minden útálatos bálványt Izráel fiainak egész földjérõl, és kényszeríte mindenkit, valaki találtatik vala Izráelben, hogy szolgáljon az Úrnak, az õ Istenöknek; [és] az õ egész életében nem szakadának el az Úrtól, atyáik Istenétõl.

Josiah Reigns in Judah

34 (A)Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and walked in the ways of David his father; and he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 3 For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet a boy, he began to seek the God of David his father, and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the (B)Asherim, and the carved and the metal images. 4 And they chopped down the altars of the Baals in his presence, and he cut down the (C)incense altars that stood above them. And he broke in pieces the (D)Asherim and the carved and the metal images, and he made dust of them and (E)scattered it over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. 5 (F)He also burned the bones of the priests on their altars and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem. 6 And in the (G)cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, in their ruins[a] all around, 7 he broke down the altars and beat the (H)Asherim and the images (I)into powder and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

The Book of the Law Found

8 (J)Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had cleansed the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the (K)governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz, (L)the recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God. 9 They came to (M)Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had collected from (N)Manasseh and Ephraim and from all the remnant of Israel and from all Judah and Benjamin and from the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 And they gave it to the workmen who were working in the house of the Lord. And the workmen who were working in the house of the Lord gave it for repairing and restoring the house. 11 They gave it to the carpenters and the builders to buy quarried stone, and timber for binders and (O)beams for the buildings that the kings of Judah had let go to ruin. 12 And the men did the work faithfully. Over them were set Jahath and Obadiah the Levites, of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to have oversight. (P)The Levites, all who were skillful with instruments of music, 13 were over (Q)the burden-bearers and directed all who did work in every kind of service, and some of the Levites were scribes and officials and gatekeepers.

14 While they were bringing out the money that had been brought into the house of the Lord, (R)Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the Lord given through[b] Moses. 15 Then Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the Lord.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan. 16 Shaphan brought the book to the king, and further reported to the king, “All that was committed to your servants they are doing. 17 They have emptied out the money that was found in the house of the Lord and have given it into the hand of the overseers and the workmen.” 18 Then Shaphan the secretary told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.” And Shaphan read from it before the king.

19 And when the king heard the words of the Law, (S)he tore his clothes. 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the secretary, and Asaiah the king's servant, saying, 21 “Go, inquire of the Lord for me and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that has been found. For great is (T)the wrath of the Lord that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord, to do according to all that is written in this book.”

Huldah Prophesies Disaster

22 So Hilkiah and those whom the king had sent[c] went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe (now she lived in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter) and spoke to her to that effect. 23 And she said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 24 Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will bring disaster upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the curses that are written in the book that was read before the king of Judah. 25 Because they have forsaken me and (U)have made offerings to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands, therefore (V)my wrath will be poured out on this place and will not be quenched. 26 But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the Lord, thus shall you say to him, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Regarding the words that you have heard, 27 because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and its inhabitants, and you have humbled yourself before me and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the Lord. 28 Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, and your eyes shall not see all the disaster that I will bring upon this place and its inhabitants.’” And they brought back word to the king.

29 (W)Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30 And the king went up to the house of the Lord, with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites, all the people both great and small. And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the Lord. 31 And the king (X)stood in his place (Y)and made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book. 32 Then he made all who were present in Jerusalem and in Benjamin join in it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. 33 And Josiah took away (Z)all the abominations from all the territory that belonged to the people of Israel and made all who were present in Israel serve the Lord their God. All his days they did not turn away from following the Lord, the God of their fathers.

34 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 2 He did what the Lord approved[a] and followed in his ancestor David’s footsteps;[b] he did not deviate to the right or the left.

3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his ancestor[c] David. In his twelfth year he began ridding[d] Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, Asherah poles, idols, and images. 4 He ordered the altars of the Baals to be torn down,[e] and broke the incense altars that were above them. He smashed the Asherah poles, idols, and images, crushed them, and sprinkled the dust over the tombs of those who had sacrificed to them. 5 He burned the bones of the pagan priests[f] on their altars; he purified Judah and Jerusalem. 6 In the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, and Simeon, as far as Naphtali, and in the ruins[g] around them, 7 he tore down the altars and Asherah poles, demolished the idols, and smashed all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

8 In the eighteenth year of his reign, he continued his policy of purifying the land and the temple.[h] He sent Shaphan son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the city official, and Joah son of Joahaz the secretary to repair the temple of the Lord his God. 9 They went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the silver that had been brought to God’s temple. The Levites who guarded the door had collected it from the people of[i] Manasseh and Ephraim and from all who were left in Israel, as well as from all the people of[j] Judah and Benjamin and the residents of[k] Jerusalem. 10 They handed it over to the construction foremen[l] assigned to the Lord’s temple. They in turn paid the temple workers to restore and repair it.[m] 11 They gave money to the craftsmen and builders to buy chiseled stone and wood for the braces and rafters of the buildings that the kings of Judah had allowed to fall into disrepair.[n] 12 The men worked faithfully. Their supervisors were Jahath and Obadiah (Levites descended from Merari), as well as Zechariah and Meshullam (descendants of Kohath). The Levites, all of whom were skilled musicians, 13 supervised the laborers and all the foremen on their various jobs.[o] Some of the Levites were scribes, officials, and guards.

14 When they took out the silver that had been brought to the Lord’s temple, Hilkiah the priest found the law scroll the Lord had given to Moses. 15 Hilkiah informed Shaphan the scribe, “I found the law scroll in the Lord’s temple.” Hilkiah gave the scroll to Shaphan. 16 Shaphan brought the scroll to the king and reported,[p] “Your servants are doing everything assigned to them. 17 They melted down the silver in the Lord’s temple[q] and handed it over to the supervisors and the construction foremen.” 18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, “Hilkiah the priest has given me a scroll.” Shaphan read it out loud before the king. 19 When the king heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes. 20 The king ordered Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah,[r] Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, 21 “Go, ask the Lord[s] for me and for those who remain in Israel and Judah about the words of this scroll that has been discovered. For the Lord’s great fury has been ignited[t] against us, because our ancestors did not obey the word of the Lord by living[u] according to all that is written in this scroll.”

22 So Hilkiah and the others sent by the king[v] went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah,[w] the supervisor of the wardrobe.[x] (She lived in Jerusalem in the Mishneh[y] district.) They stated their business,[z] 23 and she said to them: “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘Say this to the man who sent you to me: 24 “This is what the Lord says: ‘I am about to bring disaster on this place and its residents, all the curses that are recorded in the scroll which they read before the king of Judah. 25 This will happen because they have abandoned me and offered sacrifices[aa] to other gods, angering me with all the idols they have made.[ab] My anger will ignite against this place and will not be extinguished!’” 26 Say this to the king of Judah, who sent you to seek an oracle from the Lord: “This is what the Lord God of Israel says concerning the words you have heard: 27 ‘You displayed a sensitive spirit[ac] and humbled yourself before God when you heard his words concerning this place and its residents. You humbled yourself before me, tore your clothes and wept before me, and I have heard you,’ says the Lord. 28 ‘Therefore I will allow you to die and be buried in peace.[ad] You will not have to witness all the disaster I will bring on this place and its residents.’”’” Then they reported back to the king.

29 The king summoned all the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem.[ae] 30 The king went up to the Lord’s temple, accompanied by all the people of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, the priests, and the Levites. All the people were there, from the oldest to the youngest. He read aloud all the words of the scroll of the covenant that had been discovered in the Lord’s temple. 31 The king stood by his pillar[af] and renewed[ag] the covenant before the Lord, agreeing to follow[ah] the Lord and to obey his commandments, laws, and rules with all his heart and being,[ai] by carrying out the terms[aj] of this covenant recorded on this scroll. 32 He made all who were in Jerusalem and Benjamin agree to it.[ak] The residents of Jerusalem acted in accordance with the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors. 33 Josiah removed all the detestable idols from all the areas belonging to the Israelites and encouraged[al] all who were in Israel to worship the Lord their God. Throughout the rest of his reign[am] they did not turn aside from following the Lord God of their ancestors.
