4 The wife of one of the guild prophets complained to Elisha. “Your servant my husband died,” she said, “and you know that he feared Adonai. Now a creditor has come to take my two children as his slaves.” 2 Elisha asked her, “What should I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” She answered, “Your servant has nothing in the house but a flask of oil.” 3 Then he said, “Go, and borrow containers from all your neighbors, empty containers; and don’t borrow just a few! 4 Then go in; shut the door, with you and your sons inside; and pour oil into all those containers; and as they are filled, put them aside.” 5 So she left him and shut the door on herself and her sons. They brought her the containers while she poured. 6 When the containers were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another container”; but he answered, “There isn’t another container.” Then the oil stopped flowing. 7 She came and told the man of God; and he said, “Go, sell the oil, and pay your debt; then you and your sons can live on what’s left.”
8 One day Elisha visited Shunem, and a well-to-do woman living there pressed him to stay and eat a meal. After this, whenever he came through, he stopped there for a meal. 9 She said to her husband, “I can see that this is a holy man of God who keeps stopping at our place. 10 Please, let’s build him a little room on the roof. We’ll put a bed and a table in it for him, and a stool and a candlestick. Then, whenever he comes to visit us, he can stay there.”
11 One day Elisha came to visit there, and he went into the upper room to lie down. 12 He said to Geichazi his servant, “Call this Shunamit.” He called her; and when she arrived, 13 he said to him, “Tell her this: ‘You have shown us so much hospitality! What can I do to show my appreciation? Do you want me to say anything to the king for you? or to the commander of the army?” She answered, “I’m happy living as I do, among my own people.” 14 He said, “What, then, is to be done for her?” Geichazi answered, “There’s one thing — she doesn’t have a son; and her husband is old. 15 Elisha said, “Call her.” After he called her, she stood in the doorway. 16 He said, “Next year, when the season comes around, you will be holding a son.” “No, my lord,” she answered. “Man of God, don’t lie to your servant!” 17 But the woman conceived and gave birth to a son the following year when the season came around, just as Elisha had said to her.
18 When the child was old enough, he went out one day to be with his father, who was with the reapers. 19 Suddenly he cried out to his father, “My head! My head hurts!” He said to his servant, “Carry him back to his mother.” 20 When he had taken him and brought him to his mother, he lay on her lap until noon; and then he died. 21 She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut the door on him and went out. 22 She called to her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants with a donkey. I must get to the man of God as fast as I can; I’ll come straight back.” 23 He asked, “Why are you going to him today? It isn’t Rosh-Hodesh and it isn’t Shabbat.” She said, “It’s all right.” 24 Then she saddled the donkey and ordered her servant, “Drive as fast as you can; don’t slow down for me unless I say so.”
25 She set out and came to the man of God on Mount Karmel. When the man of God saw her in the distance, he said to Geichazi his servant, “Look, here comes that Shunamit. 26 Run now to meet her, and ask her, “Is everything all right with you? with your husband? with the child?” She answered, “Everything is all right.” 27 But when she reached the man of God on the hill, she grabbed his feet. Geichazi came up to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone. She is in great distress, but Adonai has hidden from me what it is, he hasn’t told me.” 28 Then she said, “Did I ask my lord for a son? Didn’t I say not to deceive me?” 29 Then Elisha said to Geichazi, “Get dressed for action, take my staff in your hand, and be on your way. If you meet anyone, don’t greet him; if anyone greets you, don’t answer; and lay my staff on the child’s face.” 30 The mother of the child said, “As Adonai lives, and as you live, I will not leave you. He got up and followed her. 31 Geichazi went on ahead of them and laid the staff on the child’s face, but there was no sound or sign of life. So he went back to Elisha and told him, “The child didn’t wake up.”
32 When Elisha reached the house, there the child was, dead and laid on the bed. 33 He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to Adonai. 34 Then he got up on the bed and lay on top of the child, putting his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes and his hands on his hands. As he stretched himself out on the child, its flesh began to grow warm. 35 Then he went down, walked around in the house awhile, went back up and stretched himself out on the child again. The child sneezed seven times, then opened his eyes. 36 Elisha called Geichazi and said, “Call this Shunamit.” So he called her; and when she came in to him, he said, “Pick up your son.” 37 She entered, fell at his feet and prostrated herself on the floor. Then she picked up her son and went out.
38 Elisha went back to Gilgal. At the time, there was a famine in the land. The guild prophets were sitting before him, and he said to his servant, “Put the big pot on the fire, and boil some soup for the prophets.” 39 One of them went out to the field to gather vegetables and came upon a wild vine, from which he filled the front of his cloak with wild squash. On returning he cut them up and put them into the stew; they didn’t know what they were. 40 Then they poured it out for the men to eat; but on tasting it, they cried, “Man of God! There’s death in that pot!” And they couldn’t eat it. 41 But he said, “Bring some flour.” He threw it in the pot, then said, “Pour it out for the people to eat.” This time there was nothing harmful in the pot.
42 A man came from Ba‘al-Shalishah bringing the man of God twenty loaves of bread made from the barley firstfruits and fresh ears of grain in his sack. Elisha said, “Give this to the people to eat.” 43 His servant said, “How am I to serve this to a hundred men?” But he said, “Give it to the people to eat; for Adonai says that they will eat and have some left over.” 44 So he served them, and they ate and had some left over, as Adonai had said.

Elisha and the Widow's Oil

And when one is full, set it aside.” 5 So she went from him and shut the door behind herself and her sons. And as she poured they brought the vessels to her. 6 When the vessels were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another.” Then the oil stopped flowing. 7 She came and told the (C)man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”
Elisha and the Shunammite Woman
8 One day Elisha went on to (D)Shunem, where a (E)wealthy woman lived, who urged him to eat some food. So whenever he passed that way, he would turn in there to eat food. 9 And she said to her husband, “Behold now, I know that this is a holy (F)man of God who is continually passing our way. 10 Let us make a small room on the roof with walls and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that whenever he comes to us, he can go in there.”
11 One day he came there, and he turned into the chamber and rested there. 12 And he said to (G)Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite.” When he had called her, she stood before him. 13 And he said to him, “Say now to her, ‘See, you have taken all this trouble for us; what is to be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to (H)the commander of the army?’” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.” 14 And he said, “What then is to be done for her?” Gehazi answered, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.” 15 He said, “Call her.” And when he had called her, she stood in the doorway. 16 And he said, “At this season, (I)about this time next year, you shall embrace a son.” And she said, “No, my lord, (J)O man of God; (K)do not lie to your servant.” 17 But the woman conceived, and she bore a son about that time (L)the following spring, as Elisha had said to her.
Elisha Raises the Shunammite's Son
18 When the child had grown, he went out one day to his father among the reapers. 19 And he said to his father, “Oh, (M)my head, my head!” The father said to his servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20 And when he had lifted him and brought him to his mother, the child sat on her lap till noon, and then he died. 21 And she went up (N)and laid him on the bed of the (O)man of God and shut the door behind him and went out. 22 Then she called to her husband and said, “Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, that I may quickly go to (P)the man of God and come back again.” 23 And he said, “Why will you go to him today? It is neither (Q)new moon nor Sabbath.” She said, “All is well.” 24 Then she saddled the donkey, and she said to her servant, “Urge the animal on; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you.” 25 So she set out and came to the man of God (R)at Mount Carmel.
When the man of God saw her coming, he said to Gehazi his servant, “Look, there is the Shunammite. 26 Run at once to meet her and say to her, ‘Is all well with you? Is all well with your husband? Is all well with the child?’” And she answered, “All is well.” 27 And when she came (S)to the mountain to the man of God, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came to push her away. But the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for she is in bitter distress, and the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me.” 28 Then she said, “Did I ask my lord for a son? (T)Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me?’” 29 He said to Gehazi, (U)“Tie up your garment and (V)take my staff in your hand and go. If you meet anyone, (W)do not greet him, and if anyone greets you, do not reply. And (X)lay my staff on the face of the child.” 30 Then the mother of the child said, (Y)“As the Lord lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So he arose and followed her. 31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the face of the child, but there was no sound or sign of life. Therefore he returned to meet him and told him, “The child (Z)has not awakened.”
32 When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. 33 So he went in and (AA)shut the door behind the two of them (AB)and prayed to the Lord. 34 Then he went up and lay on the child, putting his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. And as (AC)he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm. 35 Then he got up again and walked once back and forth in the house, and went up (AD)and stretched himself upon him. The child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. 36 Then he summoned Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunammite.” So he called her. And when she came to him, he said, “Pick up your son.” 37 She came and fell at his feet, bowing to the ground. (AE)Then she picked up her son and went out.
Elisha Purifies the Deadly Stew
38 And Elisha came again to (AF)Gilgal when (AG)there was a famine in the land. And as (AH)the sons of the prophets (AI)were sitting before him, he said to his servant, (AJ)“Set on the large pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.” 39 One of them went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine and gathered from it his lap full of wild gourds, and came and cut them up into the pot of stew, not knowing what they were. 40 And they poured out some for the men to eat. But while they were eating of the stew, they cried out, “O man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it. 41 He said, “Then bring flour.” (AK)And he threw it into the pot and said, “Pour some out for the men, that they may eat.” And there was no harm in the pot.
42 A man came from (AL)Baal-shalishah, (AM)bringing the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And Elisha said, (AN)“Give to the men, that they may eat.” 43 But his servant said, “How can I set this before a hundred men?” So he repeated, “Give them to the men, that they may eat, for thus says the Lord, ‘They shall eat and have some left.’” 44 So he set it before them. And they ate and had some left, according to the word of the Lord.

The Widow’s Olive Oil
4 The wife of a man from the company(A) of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor(B) is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.”
2 Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”
“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”(C)
3 Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”
5 She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”
But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.
7 She went and told the man of God,(D) and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”
The Shunammite’s Son Restored to Life
8 One day Elisha went to Shunem.(E) And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. 9 She said to her husband, “I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. 10 Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay(F) there whenever he comes to us.”
11 One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. 12 He said to his servant Gehazi, “Call the Shunammite.”(G) So he called her, and she stood before him. 13 Elisha said to him, “Tell her, ‘You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?’”
She replied, “I have a home among my own people.”
14 “What can be done for her?” Elisha asked.
Gehazi said, “She has no son, and her husband is old.”
15 Then Elisha said, “Call her.” So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. 16 “About this time(H) next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms.”
“No, my lord!” she objected. “Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!”
17 But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.
18 The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers.(I) 19 He said to his father, “My head! My head!”
His father told a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” 20 After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 21 She went up and laid him on the bed(J) of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.
22 She called her husband and said, “Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.”
23 “Why go to him today?” he asked. “It’s not the New Moon(K) or the Sabbath.”
“That’s all right,” she said.
24 She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, “Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.” 25 So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.(L)
When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, “Look! There’s the Shunammite! 26 Run to meet her and ask her, ‘Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?’”
“Everything is all right,” she said.
27 When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress,(M) but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why.”
28 “Did I ask you for a son, my lord?” she said. “Didn’t I tell you, ‘Don’t raise my hopes’?”
29 Elisha said to Gehazi, “Tuck your cloak into your belt,(N) take my staff(O) in your hand and run. Don’t greet anyone you meet, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.”
30 But the child’s mother said, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.
31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy has not awakened.”
32 When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch.(P) 33 He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed(Q) to the Lord. 34 Then he got on the bed and lay on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched(R) himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm. 35 Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times(S) and opened his eyes.(T)
36 Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, “Call the Shunammite.” And he did. When she came, he said, “Take your son.”(U) 37 She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.
Death in the Pot
38 Elisha returned to Gilgal(V) and there was a famine(W) in that region. While the company of the prophets was meeting with him, he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot and cook some stew for these prophets.”
39 One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine and picked as many of its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were. 40 The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it.
41 Elisha said, “Get some flour.” He put it into the pot and said, “Serve it to the people to eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.(X)

42 A man came from Baal Shalishah,(Y) bringing the man of God twenty loaves(Z) of barley bread(AA) baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said.
43 “How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked.
But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat.(AB) For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.(AC)’” 44 Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.

4 La viuda de un miembro de la comunidad de los profetas le suplicó a Eliseo:
―Mi esposo, tu siervo, ha muerto, y tú sabes que él era fiel[a] al Señor. Ahora resulta que el hombre con quien estamos endeudados ha venido para llevarse a mis dos hijos como esclavos.
2 ―¿Y qué puedo hacer por ti? —le preguntó Eliseo—. Dime, ¿qué tienes en casa?
―Tu sierva no tiene nada en casa —le respondió—, excepto un poco de aceite.
3 Eliseo le ordenó:
―Sal y pide a tus vecinos que te presten sus vasijas; consigue todas las que puedas. 4 Luego entra en la casa con tus hijos y cierra la puerta. Echa aceite en todas las vasijas y, a medida que las llenes, ponlas aparte.
5 En seguida la mujer dejó a Eliseo y se fue. Luego se encerró con sus hijos y empezó a llenar las vasijas que ellos le pasaban. 6 Cuando ya todas estuvieron llenas, ella le pidió a uno de sus hijos que le pasara otra más, y él respondió: «Ya no hay». En ese momento se acabó el aceite.

8 Un día, cuando Eliseo pasaba por Sunén, cierta mujer de buena posición le insistió que comiera en su casa. Desde entonces, siempre que pasaba por ese pueblo, comía allí. 9 La mujer le dijo a su esposo: «Mira, yo estoy segura de que este hombre que siempre nos visita es un santo hombre de Dios. 10 Hagámosle un cuarto en la azotea, y pongámosle allí una cama, una mesa con una silla, y una lámpara. De ese modo, cuando nos visite, tendrá un lugar donde quedarse».
11 En cierta ocasión Eliseo llegó, fue a su cuarto y se acostó. 12 Luego le dijo a su criado Guiezi:
―Llama a la señora.[b]
El criado así lo hizo, y ella se presentó. 13 Entonces Eliseo le dijo a Guiezi:
―Dile a la señora: “¡Te has tomado muchas molestias por nosotros! ¿Qué puedo hacer por ti? ¿Quieres que le hable al rey o al jefe del ejército en tu favor?”
Pero ella le respondió:
―Yo vivo segura en medio de mi pueblo.
14 Eliseo le preguntó a Guiezi:
―¿Qué puedo hacer por ella?
―Bueno —contestó el siervo— ella no tiene hijos, y su esposo ya es anciano.
15 ―Llámala —ordenó Eliseo.
Guiezi la llamó, y ella se detuvo en la puerta. 16 Entonces Eliseo le prometió:
―El año que viene, por esta fecha, estarás abrazando un hijo.
―¡No, mi señor, hombre de Dios! —exclamó ella—. No engañes a tu sierva.
17 En efecto, la mujer quedó embarazada. Y al año siguiente, por esa misma fecha, dio a luz un hijo, tal como Eliseo se lo había dicho.
18 El niño creció, y un día salió a ver a su padre, que estaba con los segadores. 19 De pronto exclamó:
―¡Ay, mi cabeza! ¡Me duele la cabeza!
El padre le ordenó a un criado:
―¡Llévaselo a su madre!
20 El criado lo cargó y se lo llevó a la madre, la cual lo tuvo en sus rodillas hasta el mediodía. A esa hora, el niño murió. 21 Entonces ella subió, lo puso en la cama del hombre de Dios y, cerrando la puerta, salió. 22 Después llamó a su esposo y le dijo:
―Préstame un criado y una burra; en seguida vuelvo. Voy de prisa a ver al hombre de Dios.
23 ―¿Para qué vas a verle hoy? —le preguntó su esposo—. No es día de luna nueva ni sábado.
―No importa —respondió ella.
24 Entonces hizo aparejar la burra y le ordenó al criado:
―¡Anda, vamos! No te detengas hasta que te lo diga.
25 La mujer se puso en marcha y llegó al monte Carmelo, donde estaba Eliseo, el hombre de Dios. Este la vio a lo lejos y le dijo a su criado Guiezi:
―¡Mira! Ahí viene la sunamita. 26 Corre a recibirla y pregúntale cómo está ella, y cómo están su esposo y el niño.
El criado fue, y ella respondió que todos estaban bien. 27 Pero luego fue a la montaña y se abrazó a los pies del hombre de Dios. Guiezi se acercó con el propósito de apartarla, pero el hombre de Dios intervino:
―¡Déjala! Está muy angustiada, y el Señor me ha ocultado lo que pasa; no me ha dicho nada.
28 ―Señor mío —le dijo la mujer—, ¿acaso yo te pedí un hijo? ¿No te rogué que no me engañaras?
29 Eliseo le ordenó a Guiezi:
―Arréglate la ropa, toma mi bastón y ponte en camino. Si te encuentras con alguien, no lo saludes; si alguien te saluda, no le respondas. Y, cuando llegues, coloca el bastón sobre la cara del niño.
30 Pero la madre del niño exclamó:
―¡Te juro que no te dejaré solo! ¡Tan cierto como que el Señor y tú estáis vivos!
Así que Eliseo se levantó y fue con ella. 31 Guiezi, que se había adelantado, llegó y colocó el bastón sobre la cara del niño, pero este no respondió ni dio ninguna señal de vida. Por tanto, Guiezi volvió para encontrarse con Eliseo y le dijo:
―El niño no despierta.
32 Cuando Eliseo llegó a la casa, encontró al niño muerto, tendido sobre su cama. 33 Entró al cuarto, cerró la puerta y oró al Señor. 34 Luego subió a la cama y se tendió sobre el niño su boca sobre la boca del niño, sus ojos sobre los del niño y sus manos sobre las del niño, hasta que el cuerpo del niño empezó a entrar en calor. 35 Eliseo se levantó y se puso a caminar de un lado a otro del cuarto, y luego volvió a tenderse sobre el niño. Esto lo hizo siete veces, al cabo de las cuales el niño estornudó y abrió los ojos.[c] 36 Entonces Eliseo le dijo a Guiezi:
―Llama a la señora.
Guiezi así lo hizo y, cuando la mujer llegó, Eliseo le dijo:
―Puedes llevarte a tu hijo.
37 Ella entró, se arrojó a los pies de Eliseo y se postró rostro en tierra. Entonces tomó a su hijo y salió.
El milagro de la comida
38 Eliseo regresó a Guilgal y se encontró con que en esos días había mucha hambre en el país. Por tanto, se reunió con la comunidad de profetas y le ordenó a su criado: «Pon esa olla grande en el fogón y prepara un guisado para los profetas».
39 En eso, uno de ellos salió al campo para recoger hierbas; allí encontró una planta silvestre y arrancó varias frutas hasta llenar su manto. Al regresar, las cortó en pedazos y las echó en el guisado sin saber qué eran. 40 Sirvieron el guisado, pero, cuando los hombres empezaron a comerlo, gritaron:
―¡Hombre de Dios, esto es veneno![d]
Así que no pudieron comer. 41 Entonces Eliseo ordenó:
―Traedme harina.
Y, después de echar la harina en la olla, dijo:
―Servid a la gente para que coma.
Y ya no hubo nada en la olla que les hiciera daño.
Alimentación de cien hombres
42 De Baal Salisá llegó alguien que le llevaba al hombre de Dios pan de los primeros frutos: veinte panes de cebada y espigas de trigo fresco.[e] Eliseo le dijo a su criado:
―Dale de comer a la gente.
43 ―¿Cómo voy a alimentar a cien personas con esto? —replicó el criado.
Pero Eliseo insistió:
