Jehoram Reigns Over Israel
3 Now Jehoram son of Ahab reigned over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah and reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil in the sight of the Lord, but not like his father and mother, for he removed the pillar of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin. He did not depart from them.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-breeder and gave back to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time and mustered all Israel. 7 He went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to Moab to battle?”
He said, “I will go up. I am as you are, my people as your people, and my horses as your horses.”
8 Then he said, “Which way should we go up?”
And he said, “The way through the Wilderness of Edom.”
9 So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of Edom went, and they marched around seven days. But there was no water for the camp or for the livestock that followed them.
10 The king of Israel said, “Alas! The Lord has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab!”
11 But Jehoshaphat said, “Is there a prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire of the Lord?”
Then one of the king of Israel’s servants answered, “Elisha the son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah, is here.”
12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to your father’s prophets, or to your mother’s prophets.”
Then the king of Israel said to him, “No. The Lord has called these three kings to deliver them into the hand of Moab.”
14 Elisha said, “As the Lord of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not for my regard for Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you nor see you. 15 Now bring me a musician.”
And when the musician played, the hand of the Lord came upon him. 16 He said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Make this valley full of pools.’ 17 For thus says the Lord, ‘You will not see wind, nor will you see rain, yet that valley will be filled with water, that you may drink, both you and your livestock, and your cattle.’ 18 This is an easy thing in the sight of the Lord, and He will give the Moabites into your hand. 19 You will strike every fortified city and every choice city, and will cut down every good tree, and stop every spring of water, and you will ruin every good piece of land with stones.”
20 So in the morning as the offering was offered up, suddenly water flowed from the way of Edom, and the land was filled with water.
21 When all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, all who were able to bear arms and older were summoned and stood at the border. 22 They got up early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water opposite them was as red as blood. 23 Then they said, “This is blood. The kings have surely fought together; and they have killed one another. Now therefore, Moab, to the spoil!”
24 When they came to the camp of Israel, the children of Israel arose and struck the Moabites, so that they ran from them. And they went forward into their land, killing the Moabites. 25 They demolished the cities, and on every good piece of land every man threw a stone and filled it with stones, and they stopped every spring of water and cut down every good tree. Only in Kir Hareseth did the stones in the wall remain, until the slingers surrounded it and struck it.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle was overwhelming him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they were unable. 27 Then he took his firstborn son, who would have reigned in his place, and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. And great wrath came upon Israel, and they departed from him and returned to their own land.

Moab Rebels Against Israel
3 (A)In the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, Jehoram the son of Ahab became king over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, though not like his father and mother, for he put away the (B)pillar of Baal (C)that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless, he clung to (D)the sin of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, (E)which he made Israel to sin; he did not depart from it.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder, (F)and he had to deliver to the king of Israel 100,000 lambs and the wool of 100,000 rams. 5 But (G)when Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 So King Jehoram marched out of Samaria at that time and mustered all Israel. 7 And he went and sent word to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to battle against Moab?” And he said, “I will go. (H)I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.” 8 Then he said, “By which way shall we march?” Jehoram answered, “By the way of the wilderness of Edom.”
9 So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and (I)the king of Edom. And when they had made a circuitous march of seven days, there was no water for the army or for the animals that followed them. 10 Then the king of Israel said, “Alas! He will also give the Moabites into your hand, 19 and you shall attack every fortified city and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree and stop up all springs of water (U)and ruin every good piece of land with stones.” 20 The next morning, about the time of (V)offering the sacrifice, behold, water came from the direction of Edom, till the country was filled with water.
21 When all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, all who were able to put on armor, from the youngest to the oldest, were called out and were drawn up at the border. 22 And when they rose early in the morning and the sun shone on the water, the Moabites saw the water opposite them as red as blood. 23 And they said, “This is blood; the kings have surely fought together and struck one another down. Now then, Moab, to the spoil!” 24 But when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose and struck the Moabites, till they fled before them. And they went forward, striking the Moabites as they went.[a] 25 And they overthrew the cities, and (W)on every good piece of land every man threw a stone until it was covered. They stopped every spring of water and felled all the good trees, till only its stones were left in (X)Kir-hareseth, and the slingers surrounded and attacked it. 26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle was going against him, he took with him 700 (Y)swordsmen to break through, opposite the king of Edom, but they could not. 27 Then he took his oldest son who was to reign in his place (Z)and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. And there came great wrath against Israel. And they withdrew from him and returned to their own land.

Kong Joram af Israel
3 Ahabs søn Joram kom til magten i Israel i kong Joshafat af Judas 18. regeringsår. Han regerede i 12 år med residens i Samaria. 2 Joram gjorde, hvad der var ondt i Herrens øjne, selv om han handlede bedre end sin far, Ahab, og sin mor, Jezabel. Han nedrev den stenstøtte, som hans far i sin tid havde ladet bygge for Ba’al. 3 Men ellers fortsatte han i samme spor som Jeroboam, der havde lokket Israels folk til synd ved at indføre afgudsdyrkelse.

4 Moabs konge, Meshek, og hans undersåtter var fåreavlere. „Selvfølgelig,” svarede Joshafat. „Mine folk og mine heste står til din rådighed. 8 Fortæl mig, hvilke angrebsplaner du har.”
„Jeg har tænkt mig at angribe sydfra, fra Edoms ørken,” svarede Joram.
9 Så sluttede Judas konge sig til ham, og senere kom Edoms konge også med. I syv dage fulgte hærene en omvej gennem ørkenen, men så slap deres vandbeholdning op, og der var ikke en dråbe tilbage, hverken til mændene eller dyrene, de havde med.
10 „Hvad skal vi nu gøre?” udbrød Israels konge. „Har Herren virkelig ført os herud, for at Moabs hær kan besejre os?”
11 Men Joshafat spurgte: „Er der ikke en af Herrens profeter i nærheden, som kan spørge Herren, hvad vi skal gøre?”
„Jo, der er,” udbrød en af de israelitiske officerer. „Elisa bor her tæt ved. Han var profeten Elias’ højre hånd.”
12 „Ja, det er en mand, som virkelig taler Herrens ord,” bekræftede Joshafat. Så tog Israels, Judas og Edoms konger hen til Elisa for at spørge ham til råds.

14 „Jeg sværger ved den levende Gud, som jeg tjener, at jeg ikke ville værdige dig et blik, hvis det ikke var for kong Joshafat af Judas skyld,” svarede Elisa. 15 „Men få nu fat i en musiker.” Det gjorde de så, og mens han spillede, kom Herrens kraft over Elisa.
16 „Herren siger, at I skal grave en masse huller i det udtørrede flodleje i bunden af dalen,” sagde Elisa. 17 „I vil ikke mærke nogen vind eller se nogen regn, men alligevel vil dalen blive fyldt med vand, så der bliver rigeligt til jer og jeres dyr. 18 Men ikke nok med det. Herren vil også give jer sejr over Moabs hær. 19 I skal erobre alle landets betydningsfulde byer, der er stærkt befæstet. I skal fælde deres frugttræer, tilstoppe deres kilder og ødelægge markerne med sten.”
20 Næste morgen omkring morgenofferets tid kom der ganske rigtigt vand ned fra Edoms højland og fyldte flodlejet.
21 I mellemtiden havde folket i Moab hørt, at tre hære var på vej imod dem, og alle kampdygtige mænd, både unge og gamle, blev indkaldt og placeret langs grænsen. 22 Men i den tidlige morgen, da solens stråler faldt på vandet, så det for moabitterne ud, som om der lå blod overalt.
23 „Se alt det blod,” råbte de. „De tre fjendehære må have slået hinanden ihjel. Kom, lad os løbe ned og udplyndre deres lejr.”
24 Men da de nåede ned til lejren, blev de angrebet og slået på flugt af israelitterne, som forfulgte dem langt ind i Moabs land og ødelagde alt, hvad de kom i nærheden af. 25 De ødelagde byerne, dængede hvert eneste stykke opdyrket jord til med sten, stoppede kilderne til og fældede frugttræerne. Til sidst var kun fæstningsbyen Kir-Hareset tilbage, men slyngekasterne belejrede og beskød den.
26 Da Moabs konge indså, at han ikke kunne holde stand mod angrebet, tog han 700 bevæbnede soldater med sig og forsøgte at bryde igennem belejringen for at komme hen til Edoms konge. Men planen mislykkedes. 27 Så tog han sin ældste søn, tronarvingen, og for øjnene af den bestyrtede israelitiske hær dræbte han ham og ofrede ham dér på muren som brændoffer til sin gud. Denne modbydelige handling blev israelitterne så oprørte over, at de vendte om og trak sig tilbage til deres eget land.

Moab Revolts
3 Joram[a](A) son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil(B) in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father(C) and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone(D) of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins(E) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab(F) raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs(G) and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled(H) against the king of Israel. 6 So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. 7 He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight(I) against Moab?”
“I will go with you,” he replied. “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
8 “By what route shall we attack?” he asked.
“Through the Desert of Edom,” he answered.
9 So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom.(J) After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them.
10 “What!” exclaimed the king of Israel. “Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?”
11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire(K) of the Lord?”
An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha(L) son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.[b](M)”
12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word(N) of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.”
“No,” the king of Israel answered, “because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.”
14 Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. 15 But now bring me a harpist.”(O)
While the harpist was playing, the hand(P) of the Lord came on Elisha 16 and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. 17 For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water,(Q) and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. 18 This is an easy(R) thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. 19 You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.”
20 The next morning, about the time(S) for offering the sacrifice, there it was—water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.(T)
21 Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to fight against them; so every man, young and old, who could bear arms was called up and stationed on the border. 22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites across the way, the water looked red—like blood. 23 “That’s blood!” they said. “Those kings must have fought and slaughtered each other. Now to the plunder, Moab!”
24 But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and fought them until they fled. And the Israelites invaded the land and slaughtered the Moabites. 25 They destroyed the towns, and each man threw a stone on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up all the springs and cut down every good tree. Only Kir Hareseth(U) was left with its stones in place, but men armed with slings surrounded it and attacked it.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they failed. 27 Then he took his firstborn(V) son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.
