3 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years. 2 And he wrought evil in the sight of the Lord; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.
4 And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool. 5 But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6 And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel. 7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses. 8 And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.
9 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days’ journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them. 10 And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab! 11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah. 12 And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the Lord is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. 13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab. 14 And Elisha said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee. 15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him. 16 And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches. 17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts. 18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand. 19 And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones. 20 And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21 And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border. 22 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood: 23 and they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil. 24 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country. 25 And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.
26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not. 27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

Moab Revolts
3 Joram[a](A) son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil(B) in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father(C) and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone(D) of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins(E) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab(F) raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs(G) and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled(H) against the king of Israel. 6 So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. 7 He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight(I) against Moab?”
“I will go with you,” he replied. “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
8 “By what route shall we attack?” he asked.
“Through the Desert of Edom,” he answered.
9 So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom.(J) After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them.
10 “What!” exclaimed the king of Israel. “Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?”
11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire(K) of the Lord?”
An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha(L) son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.[b](M)”
12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word(N) of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.”
“No,” the king of Israel answered, “because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.”
14 Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. 15 But now bring me a harpist.”(O)
While the harpist was playing, the hand(P) of the Lord came on Elisha 16 and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. 17 For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water,(Q) and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. 18 This is an easy(R) thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. 19 You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.”
20 The next morning, about the time(S) for offering the sacrifice, there it was—water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.(T)
21 Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to fight against them; so every man, young and old, who could bear arms was called up and stationed on the border. 22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites across the way, the water looked red—like blood. 23 “That’s blood!” they said. “Those kings must have fought and slaughtered each other. Now to the plunder, Moab!”
24 But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and fought them until they fled. And the Israelites invaded the land and slaughtered the Moabites. 25 They destroyed the towns, and each man threw a stone on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up all the springs and cut down every good tree. Only Kir Hareseth(U) was left with its stones in place, but men armed with slings surrounded it and attacked it.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they failed. 27 Then he took his firstborn(V) son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.

Elisa förutsäger segern över Moab
3 Ahabs son Joram blev kung över Israel i Samaria under Josafats artonde regeringsår över Juda, och han regerade i tolv år.
2 Han var en mycket ond man, men inte så ogudaktig som sin far och mor, för han lät åtminstone riva ner den Baalspelare som hans far hade rest.
3 Men trots det höll han fast vid den stora synd som Nebats son Jerobeam hade begått och som hade förlett Israels folk till avgudadyrkan.
4 Kung Mesa i Moab och hans folk var fårfarmare. De hade försett Israel med 100.000 lamm och ull från 100.000 bockar,
5 men efter Ahabs död gjorde kungen i Moab uppror mot Israel.
6-8 Joram mönstrade då sin armé och skickade följande meddelande till Josafat, kungen i Juda:Moabs kung har gjort uppror mot mig. Vill du hjälpa mig att strida mot honom? Naturligtvis vill jag det, svarade Josafat. Mitt folk och mina hästar står till ditt förfogande. Hur har du planerat anfallet? Vi ska gå till anfall från Edoms öken, svarade Joram.
9 De båda arméerna, som så småningom förstärktes med trupper från Edom, gick en omväg genom öknen, som tog sju dagar i anspråk. Vattnet tog då slut för både soldaterna och djuren.
10 Vad ska vi ta oss till? utbrast Israels kung. Har Herren fört oss hit för att låta kungen i Moab besegra oss?
11 Men kung Josafat av Juda frågade: Finns det inte någon Herrens profet här ibland oss som vi kan rådfråga? Elisa är här, svarade en av officerarna i Israels armé. Han var ju Elias lärjunge.
12 Bra! Han är just den man vi behöver, sa Josafat.Kungarna i Israel, Juda och Edom gick alltså för att fråga Elisa till råds.
13 Jag vill inte ha med dig att göra! sa Elisa missnöjt till kung Joram. Du kan gå till dina föräldrars falska profeter!Nej, svarade kung Joram. Herren har fört oss ut hit för att bli besegrade av kungen i Moab!
14 Jag säger inför Gud att jag inte skulle bry mig om dig, om det inte vore för kung Josafats skull, svarade Elisa.
15 Nåväl, skaffa nu hit någon som spelar harpa!Och medan harpan spelade kom Herrens budskap till Elisa:
16 Herren befaller att det ska grävas diken här i dalen för att ta emot vattnet som han ska sända.
17 Ni ska inte se någon vind eller något regn, men den här dalen ska fyllas med vatten, så att det finns tillräckligt för er och alla djuren!
18 Det här är bara början, för Herren ska låta er segra över Moabs armé!
19 Ni ska inta varje befäst stad och varje viktig ort. Ni ska hugga ner varje gott träd, fylla igen alla deras brunnar och förstöra åkrarna med sten.
20 Dagen därpå, när det var dags för morgonoffret, inträffade undret! Vatten! Det kom strömmande från Edom, så att det snart fanns vatten överallt.
21 Under tiden fick folket i Moab höra talas om de tre arméerna som kom marscherande mot dem. Då mobiliserade de alla stridsdugliga män, både unga och gamla, och ställde upp utmed gränsen.
22 Men tidigt följande morgon när solen gick upp och lyste på vattnet, såg det rött ut, som om det varit blod!
23 Det är blod! utropade de. De tre arméerna har råkat i strid och dödat varandra! Nu går vi ut och tar bytet!
24 Men när de kom fram till Israels läger, rusade Israels soldater ut och började döda dem, så att Moabs armé måste fly. Och Israels armé drog in i Moabs land och plundrade vilt.
25 De förstörde städerna och fyllde åkrarna med sten. De fyllde också igen brunnarna och fällde fruktträden. Till slut var det bara fästningen Kir-Hareset kvar att erövra, men också den föll när de gick till anfall.
26 När kungen i Moab såg att han förlorat slaget, anförde han 700 av sina svärdbeväpnade män i ett sista desperat försök att slå sig igenom till kungen i Edom, men han misslyckades.
27 Då hämtade han sin äldste son, som skulle ärva hans tron och ämbete, men till den israeliska arméns förskräckelse dödade kungen sin son och offrade honom som ett brännoffer på muren. Israeliterna avbröt då striden och vände med avsky tillbaka till sitt eget land.
