3 Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.
2 And he wrought evil in the sight of the Lord; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.
3 Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.
4 And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.
5 But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6 And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.
7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.
8 And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.
9 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
10 And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!
11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.
12 And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the Lord is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.
14 And Elisha said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.
15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.
16 And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.
17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.
19 And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.
20 And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.
21 And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border.
22 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood:
23 And they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.
24 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country.
25 And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.
26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.
27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.

3 Jehoram, figlio di Achab, cominciò a regnare sopra Israele a Samaria l'anno diciottesimo di Giosafat, re di Giuda, e regnò dodici anni.
2 Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi dell'Eterno, ma non come suo padre e sua madre, perché tolse via la stele di Baal che suo padre aveva fatto.
3 Tuttavia egli rimase attaccato ai peccati di Geroboamo figlio di Nebat, che aveva fatto peccare Israele, e non se ne allontanò.
4 Mesha, re di Moab, era un allevatore di pecore e pagava al re d'Israele un tributo di centomila agnelli e la lana di centomila montoni.

8 Poi domandò: «Per quale via saliremo?». Jehoram rispose: «Per la via del deserto di Edom».
9 Cosí il re d'Israele, il re di Giuda e il re di Edom si misero in marcia; dopo aver compiuto un percorso intorno al deserto per sette giorni venne a mancare l'acqua all'esercito e alle bestie che li seguivano.
10 Allora il re d'Israele disse: «Ahimè l'Eterno ha chiamato assieme questi tre re, per darli nelle mani di Moab!».
11 Ma Giosafat chiese: «Non c'è qui un profeta dell'Eterno per mezzo del quale possiamo consultare l'Eterno?». Uno dei servi del re d'Israele rispose e disse: «C'è qui Eliseo, figlio di Shafat, il quale versava l'acqua sulle mani d'Elia».
12 Giosafat disse: «La parola dell'Eterno è con lui». Cosí il re d'Israele Giosafat e il re di Edom discesero da lui.
13 Ma Eliseo disse al re d'Israele: «Che ho io da fare con te? Va' dai profeti di tuo padre e dai profeti di tua madre!». Il re d'Israele gli rispose: «No, perché l'Eterno ha chiamato insieme questi tre re per darli nelle mani di Moab».
14 Allora Eliseo disse: «Come è vero che vive l'Eterno degli eserciti, alla cui presenza io sto, se non fosse per il rispetto che ho per Giosafat, re di Giuda, non avrei neppure badato a te e non ti avrei degnato di uno sguardo.
15 Ma ora conducetemi un suonatore». E avvenne che, mentre il suonatore arpeggiava, la mano dell'Eterno fu sopra Eliseo.
16 Allora egli disse: «Cosí parla l'Eterno: "Scavate molte fosse in questa valle".
17 Poiché cosí dice l'Eterno: "Voi non vedrete né vento né pioggia; tuttavia questa valle si riempirà di acqua; e berrete voi, il vostro bestiame e le vostre bestie da soma.
18 Ma questo è ancora poca cosa agli occhi dell'Eterno, perché egli darà anche Moab nelle vostre mani.
19 Voi distruggerete tutte le città fortificate e tutte le migliori città, abbatterete tutti gli alberi buoni, turerete tutte le sorgenti d'acqua e rovinerete ogni buon appezzamento di terra con pietre"».
20 Al mattino seguente nell'ora in cui era offerta l'oblazione di cibo, ecco arrivare l'acqua dal lato di Edom e il paese ne fu ripieno.
21 Ora tutti i Moabiti saputo che quei re erano saliti per muovere loro guerra, radunarono tutti quelli che erano in grado di portare le armi, giovani e vecchi, e si schierarono alla frontiera.
22 Quando si alzarono al mattino presto, il sole splendeva sulle acque; allora i Moabiti videro davanti a loro le acque rosse come sangue;
23 e dissero: «Quello è sangue! Certamente quei re sono venuti alle mani e si sono uccisi l'un l'altro; or dunque, Moab, alla preda!».
24 Cosí avanzarono verso il campo d'Israele; ma gli Israeliti si levarono e sbaragliarono i Moabiti, che fuggirono davanti a loro. Si inoltrarono quindi nel paese, continuando a uccidere i Moabiti.
25 Distrussero le città; ogni buon appezzamento di terra lo riempirono di pietre ciascuno gettandovi la sua; turarono tutte le sorgenti d'acqua e abbatterono tutti gli alberi buoni. Di Kir-Hareseth rimanevano soltanto le pietre, ma i frombolieri la circondarono e l'attaccarono.
26 Il re di Moab, vedendo che la battaglia era troppo forte per lui, prese con sé settecento uomini che brandivano la spada, per aprirsi un varco fino al re di Edom; ma non poterono.
27 Allora prese il suo figlio primogenito, che avrebbe dovuto regnare al suo posto, e l'offerse in olocausto sopra le mura. Vi fu allora grande indignazione contro quei d'Israele, che si allontanarono da lui e ritornarono al loro paese.

Moab Revolts
3 Joram[a](A) son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil(B) in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father(C) and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone(D) of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins(E) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab(F) raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs(G) and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled(H) against the king of Israel. 6 So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. 7 He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight(I) against Moab?”
“I will go with you,” he replied. “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
8 “By what route shall we attack?” he asked.
“Through the Desert of Edom,” he answered.
9 So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom.(J) After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them.
10 “What!” exclaimed the king of Israel. “Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?”
11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire(K) of the Lord?”
An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha(L) son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.[b](M)”
12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word(N) of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.”
“No,” the king of Israel answered, “because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.”
14 Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. 15 But now bring me a harpist.”(O)
While the harpist was playing, the hand(P) of the Lord came on Elisha 16 and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. 17 For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water,(Q) and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. 18 This is an easy(R) thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. 19 You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.”
20 The next morning, about the time(S) for offering the sacrifice, there it was—water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.(T)
21 Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to fight against them; so every man, young and old, who could bear arms was called up and stationed on the border. 22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites across the way, the water looked red—like blood. 23 “That’s blood!” they said. “Those kings must have fought and slaughtered each other. Now to the plunder, Moab!”
24 But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and fought them until they fled. And the Israelites invaded the land and slaughtered the Moabites. 25 They destroyed the towns, and each man threw a stone on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up all the springs and cut down every good tree. Only Kir Hareseth(U) was left with its stones in place, but men armed with slings surrounded it and attacked it.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they failed. 27 Then he took his firstborn(V) son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.
