The War between Moab and Israel
3 Ahab’s son Jehoram became the king of Israel at Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah. He ruled for twelve years. 2 Jehoram did what was bad in the eyes of the Lord, but not like his father and mother. For he put away the object of Baal which his father had made. 3 But he held on to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel sin. He did not leave them.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab raised sheep. He had to pay the king of Israel 100,000 lambs and the wool of 100,000 rams each year. 5 But when Ahab died, the king of Moab turned against the king of Israel. 6 So King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time and called all Israel together. 7 Then he went and sent word to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has turned against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab?” And Jehoshaphat said, “I will go. I am as you are. My people are as your people. My horses are as your horses.” 8 Then he said, “Which way should we go?” And he answered, “By the way of the desert of Edom.” 9 So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom. They traveled around for seven days, but there was no water for the army or the cattle that followed them. 10 The king of Israel said, “It is bad! For the Lord has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.” 11 But Jehoshaphat said, “Is there not a man who speaks for God here? Is there no one we can ask to learn what the Lord would have us do?” One of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha the son of Shaphat is here. He poured water on the hands of Elijah.” 12 And Jehoshaphat said, “The word of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the men who tell what will happen in the future that your father and mother have gone to.” And the king of Israel said to him, “No. It is the Lord Who has called these three kings together to give them into the hand of Moab.” 14 Elisha said, “As the Lord of all lives, before Whom I stand, if I did not care for Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look at you or see you. 15 But now bring me a man who plays music.” And when the man played music, the power of the Lord came upon Elisha. 16 He said, “This is what the Lord says, ‘Make this valley full of ditches.’ 17 For the Lord says, ‘You will not see wind or rain. But that valley will be filled with water so that you and your cattle and your animals will drink.’ 18 This is only a small thing in the eyes of the Lord. He will give you the Moabites also. 19 Then you will destroy every strong city and cut down every good tree. You will close all the wells of water, and destroy every good piece of land with stones.” 20 The next morning, about the time when the gift is given on the altar, water came by the way of Edom. The country was filled with water. 21 Now all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them. All who were able to wear battle-clothes, young and old, were called together. And they stood at the side of the land of Moab. 22 They got up early in the morning. The sun was shining on the water. And the Moabites saw that the water beside them was as red as blood. 23 They said, “This is blood. For sure the kings have fought and killed one another. So now, Moab, let us take what is left!” 24 But when they came to the tents of Israel, the Israelites came and fought against the Moabites. The Moabites ran from them. And Israel went on into the land, killing the Moabites. 25 So they destroyed the cities. Each man threw a stone on every piece of good land until it was covered. They closed all the wells of water and cut down all the good trees. Only the stones of Kir-hareseth were left standing. But the stone-throwers went around it and fought against it. 26 The king of Moab saw that the battle was too hard for him. So he took with him 700 men who used the sword, to break through to the king of Edom. But they could not. 27 Then he took his oldest son who was to rule in his place, and gave him as a burnt gift on the wall. And many became very angry toward Israel. They left him and returned to their own land.

3 (A) Joram, Ahabs son, blev kung över Israel i Samaria i Juda kung Joshafats artonde regeringsår och regerade i tolv år[a]. 2 (B) Han gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon men inte som hans far och mor, för han skaffade bort den baalsstod som hans far hade låtit göra. 3 (C) Men han höll fast vid de synder som Jerobeam, Nebats son, hade förlett Israel med. Från dessa avstod han inte.
Krig mot Moab
4 Mesha[b], kungen i Moab som hade stora fårhjordar, hade betalat i skatt till Israels kung 100 000 lamm och ull av 100 000 baggar. 5 (D) Men när Ahab var död gjorde Moabs kung uppror[c] mot Israels kung.
6 Då drog kung Joram ut från Samaria och mönstrade hela Israel. 7 (E) Sedan sände han bud till kung Joshafat i Juda och lät säga: ”Moabs kung har gjort uppror mot mig. Vill du gå med mig för att strida mot Moab?” Han svarade: ”Ja, jag går med – jag som du, mitt folk som ditt folk, mina hästar som dina hästar!” 8 Han frågade: ”Vilken väg ska vi dra ut?” Han svarade: ”Vägen genom Edoms öken[d].”
9 Så drog de ut, Israels kung, Judas kung och Edoms kung. Men när de vandrat omkring i sju dagar fanns det inte längre något vatten, varken för hären eller för djuren som de förde med sig. 10 Då sade Israels kung: ”Så olyckligt att Herren skulle kalla samman dessa tre kungar för att ge dem i Moabs hand!” 11 (F) Men Joshafat sade: ”Finns det ingen Herrens profet här, så att vi kan fråga Herren genom honom?” Då svarade en av de tjänare som Israels kung hade med sig: ”Elisha, Shafats son, finns här, han som brukade hälla vatten över Elias händer.” 12 Joshafat sade: ”Hos honom är Herrens ord.” Israels kung och Joshafat och Edoms kung gick då ner till honom.
13 Men Elisha sade till Israels kung: ”Vad har jag med dig att göra? Gå du till din fars profeter[e] och din mors profeter.” Israels kung svarade honom: ”Nej, Herren har kallat samman dessa tre kungar för att ge dem i Moabs hand!” 14 Då sade Elisha: ”Så sant Herren Sebaot lever, han som jag tjänar: Om det inte vore för kung Joshafat av Juda så skulle jag inte bry mig om dig eller ens se åt dig. 15 (G) Men hämta nu hit åt mig en man som spelar harpa[f].” Och när harpspelaren spelade kom Herrens hand över honom. 16 Han sade: ”Så säger Herren: Gräv grop vid grop i denna dal, 17 för så säger Herren: Ni ska inte märka någon vind eller se något regn, men ändå ska dalen bli full med vatten så att både ni själva, er boskap och era andra djur får att dricka.
18 Men Herren anser inte detta vara nog, utan han ska också ge Moab i er hand. 19 Ni ska inta alla befästa städer och alla andra viktiga städer. Ni ska hugga ner alla goda träd och alla vattenkällor ska ni täppa igen. Och all bördig åkermark ska ni fördärva med stenar.” 20 (H) Och se, på morgonen, vid den tid då matoffret frambärs, strömmade vatten till från Edomssidan, så att landet fylldes med vatten.
21 Hela Moab hade hört att kungarna hade dragit upp för att strida mot dem. Och alla som var i vapenför ålder eller däröver hade kallats samman och stod vid gränsen. 22 När de steg upp tidigt på morgonen och solen lyste på vattnet, såg det ut för moabiterna som om vattnet framför dem var rött som blod. 23 Då sade de: ”Det är blod! Kungarna har säkert kommit i strid och dödat varandra. Nu till plundring, Moab!”
24 Men när de kom till Israels läger bröt israeliterna fram och slog moabiterna, som flydde för dem. Och de drog in i landet och slog moabiterna. 25 De förstörde städerna och kastade var och en sin sten på all bördig åkermark tills den var övertäckt. De täppte till alla vattenkällor och fällde alla goda träd. Till slut återstod endast stenarna av Kir-Hareset[g]. Slungkastarna omringade staden och besköt den.
26 När Moabs kung såg att han inte kunde stå emot i striden, tog han med sig sjuhundra svärdbeväpnade män för att slå sig igenom till Edoms kung. Men de kunde inte. 27 Då tog han sin förstfödde son[h], som skulle bli kung efter honom, och offrade honom som brännoffer på muren. En stark vrede[i] kom då över Israel, som bröt upp och lämnade honom i fred och vände tillbaka till sitt land igen.

Moab Revolts
3 Joram[a](A) son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 He did evil(B) in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father(C) and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone(D) of Baal that his father had made. 3 Nevertheless he clung to the sins(E) of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them.
4 Now Mesha king of Moab(F) raised sheep, and he had to pay the king of Israel a tribute of a hundred thousand lambs(G) and the wool of a hundred thousand rams. 5 But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled(H) against the king of Israel. 6 So at that time King Joram set out from Samaria and mobilized all Israel. 7 He also sent this message to Jehoshaphat king of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight(I) against Moab?”
“I will go with you,” he replied. “I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
8 “By what route shall we attack?” he asked.
“Through the Desert of Edom,” he answered.
9 So the king of Israel set out with the king of Judah and the king of Edom.(J) After a roundabout march of seven days, the army had no more water for themselves or for the animals with them.
10 “What!” exclaimed the king of Israel. “Has the Lord called us three kings together only to deliver us into the hands of Moab?”
11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may inquire(K) of the Lord?”
An officer of the king of Israel answered, “Elisha(L) son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour water on the hands of Elijah.[b](M)”
12 Jehoshaphat said, “The word(N) of the Lord is with him.” So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
13 Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Why do you want to involve me? Go to the prophets of your father and the prophets of your mother.”
“No,” the king of Israel answered, “because it was the Lord who called us three kings together to deliver us into the hands of Moab.”
14 Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not pay any attention to you. 15 But now bring me a harpist.”(O)
While the harpist was playing, the hand(P) of the Lord came on Elisha 16 and he said, “This is what the Lord says: I will fill this valley with pools of water. 17 For this is what the Lord says: You will see neither wind nor rain, yet this valley will be filled with water,(Q) and you, your cattle and your other animals will drink. 18 This is an easy(R) thing in the eyes of the Lord; he will also deliver Moab into your hands. 19 You will overthrow every fortified city and every major town. You will cut down every good tree, stop up all the springs, and ruin every good field with stones.”
20 The next morning, about the time(S) for offering the sacrifice, there it was—water flowing from the direction of Edom! And the land was filled with water.(T)
21 Now all the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to fight against them; so every man, young and old, who could bear arms was called up and stationed on the border. 22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites across the way, the water looked red—like blood. 23 “That’s blood!” they said. “Those kings must have fought and slaughtered each other. Now to the plunder, Moab!”
24 But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and fought them until they fled. And the Israelites invaded the land and slaughtered the Moabites. 25 They destroyed the towns, and each man threw a stone on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up all the springs and cut down every good tree. Only Kir Hareseth(U) was left with its stones in place, but men armed with slings surrounded it and attacked it.
26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle had gone against him, he took with him seven hundred swordsmen to break through to the king of Edom, but they failed. 27 Then he took his firstborn(V) son, who was to succeed him as king, and offered him as a sacrifice on the city wall. The fury against Israel was great; they withdrew and returned to their own land.
